Identifying Customer Churn In After-Market Operations Using Machine Learning Algorithms, Vitaly Briker, Richard Farrow, William Trevino, Brent Allen

SMU Data Science Review

This paper presents a comparative study on machine learning methods as they are applied to product associations, future purchase predictions, and predictions of customer churn in aftermarket operations. Association rules are used help to identify patterns across products and find correlations in customer purchase behaviour. Studying customer behaviour as it pertains to Recency, Frequency, and Monetary Value (RFM) helps inform customer segmentation and identifies customers with propensity to churn. Lastly, Flowserve’s customer purchase history enables the establishment of churn thresholds for each customer group and assists in constructing a model to predict future churners. The aim of this model is …

Personalized Detection Of Anxiety Provoking News Events Using Semantic Network Analysis, Jacquelyn Cheun Phd, Luay Dajani, Quentin B. Thomas Dec 2019

Personalized Detection Of Anxiety Provoking News Events Using Semantic Network Analysis, Jacquelyn Cheun Phd, Luay Dajani, Quentin B. Thomas

SMU Data Science Review

In the age of hyper-connectivity, 24/7 news cycles, and instant news alerts via social media, mental health researchers don't have a way to automatically detect news content which is associated with triggering anxiety or depression in mental health patients. Using the Associated Press news wire, a semantic network was built with 1,056 news articles containing over 500,000 connections across multiple topics to provide a personalized algorithm which detects problematic news content for a given reader. We make use of Semantic Network Analysis to surface the relationship between news article text and anxiety in readers who struggle with mental health disorders. …

A Data Science Approach To Defining A Data Scientist, Andy Ho, An Nguyen, Jodi L. Pafford, Robert Slater Dec 2019

A Data Science Approach To Defining A Data Scientist, Andy Ho, An Nguyen, Jodi L. Pafford, Robert Slater

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we present a common definition and list of skills for a Data Scientist using online job postings. The overlap and ambiguity of various roles such as data scientist, data engineer, data analyst, software engineer, database administrator, and statistician motivate the problem. To arrive at a single Data Scientist definition, we collect over 8,000 job postings from Indeed.com for the six job titles. Each corpus contains text on job qualifications, skills, responsibilities, educational preferences, and requirements. Our data science methodology and analysis rendered the single definition of a data scientist: A data scientist codes, collaborates, and communicates – …

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper we analyze sales data from 2016-2018 consisting of 5,547,066 records and 30 categorical variables for XYZ Furniture company (XYZ) and answer two questions of interest. The first is given the sales order data, can we predict if the shipment will miss the estimated delivery date that is generated from XYZ's internal shipment delivery date estimator. We run the data through Support Gradient Descent Boost, Random Forest, Shallow Neural Net, and Deep Neural Net models. The Deep Neural Net model provides the highest accuracy at 84.74% of predicting if a given record will miss the estimated ship date. …

Molecularly Targeted Treatments For Urothelial And Renal Cell Carcinomas, Andre R. Jordan Dec 2019

Molecularly Targeted Treatments For Urothelial And Renal Cell Carcinomas, Andre R. Jordan

Open Access Dissertations

Bladder cancer (BCa) is the 4th most common cancer in men, and more often presents as advanced disease in women. Management of BCa is complicated and costly due to high rates of recurrence and progression, multifocality, and heterogeneity of tumors. The hyaluronic acid-HYAL-1 system is a molecular driver of BCa. Tumor cell-derived hyaluronidase, HYAL-1, degrades hyaluronic acid (HA) into angiogenic fragments (AGF: 10-12 disaccharides). AGF support tumor growth and progression. In preclinical models of BCa, we evaluated whether o-sulfated AGF (sHA-F) inhibits HYAL-1 HAase activity and has antitumor activity. At IC50 for HAase activity inhibition (5-20 µg/ml [0.4-1.7 µM]), sHA-F …

We have previously hypothesized that relatively small and isolated rural communities may experience founder effects, defined as the genetic ramifications of small population sizes at the time of a community’s establishment. To explore this, we used an Illumina Infinium Omni2.5Exome-8 chip to collect data from 157 individuals from four Illinois communities, three rural and one urban. Genetic diversity estimates of 999,259 autosomal markers suggested that the reduction in heterozygosity due to shared ancestry was approximately 0, indicating a randomly mating population. An eigenanalysis, which is similar to a principal component analysis but ran on a genetic coancestry matrix, conducted in …

Controversies resulting from genetic testing on skeletal remains of disputed stewardship raise important questions about obligations inherent on genetic researchers to assure ethical chain of custody. In this paper, we analyze and evaluate several proposed positions on whether such research should be published. Following jurisprudential standards for legitimate regulatory systems, we argue that responsible conduct of research requires reasonable attention to chain of custody, but cannot require guarantees, particularly in cases of ancient remains.

Ancient DNA studies have always refreshed our understanding of the human past that can’t be tracked by modern DNA alone. Until recently, ancient mitochondrial genomic studies in East Asia are still very limited. Here, we retrieved the whole mitochondrial genome of an 8,400-year- old individual from Inner Mongolia, China. Phylogenetic analyses show that the individual belongs to a previously undescribed clade under haplogroup C5d that was most probably originated in northern Asia and may have a very low frequency in extant populations that is not yet sampled. We further characterized the demographic history of mitochondrial haplogroups C5 and C5d, and …

Reported Acquisition Practices Of Australian Dog Owners, Simone A. Blackman, Bethany J. Wilson, Alistair R. Reed, Paul D. Mcgreevy Dec 2019

Reported Acquisition Practices Of Australian Dog Owners, Simone A. Blackman, Bethany J. Wilson, Alistair R. Reed, Paul D. Mcgreevy

Rescue and Surrender of Companion Animals Collection

In Australia, the UK and the US dog ownership is prevalent with an estimated 40% of Australian households, 25% of UK households, and 50% of US households owning a dog. Once acquired, a dog usually becomes a family companion so, unlike a faulty product, it can rarely be returned or resold without some emotional impact on both the acquirer and the dog. Regarding the reality of dog relinquishment, there is a growing need for cross-disciplinary research that considers how dog owners are making their acquisition choices and, if prioritising different attributes, leads to more optimal acquisition choices. This research collected …

Reducing Pressure Ulcers In Emergency Department Boarding Patients, Youa Yang

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

CRMC is a level one trauma and teaching hospital in Fresno, California. CRMC’s emergency department (ED) is licensed for 84 beds. When hall beds are added this ED can go up to 110 beds. CRMC sees over 9,000 patients a month. Due to an increase in hospital census and length of stay, this ED has a daily average of 30 inpatients boarding. In December of 2018, this ED had one hospital acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU). Barriers to preventing HAPU’s in the ED are rooms that are not big enough to accommodate hospital beds, inexperienced new nurses who are unaware of …

Genetic Taster Status As A Mediator Of Neural Activity And Swallowing Mechanics In Healthy Adults, Angela M. Dietsch, Ross M. Westemeyer, William G. Pearson Jr., Douglas H. Schultz

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

As part of a larger study examining relationships between taste properties and swallowing, we assessed the influence of genetic taster status (GTS) on measures of brain activity and swallowing physiology during taste stimulation in healthy men and women. Twenty-one participants underwent videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during trials of high-intensity taste stimuli. The precisely formulated mixtures included sour, sweet-sour, lemon, and orange taste profiles and unflavored controls. Swallowing physiology was characterized via computational analysis of swallowing mechanics plus other kinematic and temporal measures, all extracted from VFSS recordings. Whole-brain analysis of fMRI data assessed blood …
