Fear Of Positive Evaluation And Negative Affect From Inclusion In Cyberball, Jason Ted Grossman Dec 2019

Fear Of Positive Evaluation And Negative Affect From Inclusion In Cyberball, Jason Ted Grossman

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Fear of positive evaluation (FPE) is a construct related to social anxiety that involves discomfort when receiving positive attention and feedback from others. FPE research has increased over the past decade, and results suggest that it may be an important part of social anxiety for some individuals; however, it is not yet known whether FPE may also include discomfort from being included in social situations. Level of inclusion was hypothesized to moderate the relationship between FPE and negative affect from being over included such that those with high FPE would feel more uncomfortable the more they were included. To test …

Psychographic Persona Development In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Melody Day Dec 2019

Psychographic Persona Development In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Melody Day

Undergraduate Honors Theses

When interviewed about his Victorian Gothic masterpiece, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde once observed that “Basil Hallward is what I think I am: Lord Henry is what the world thinks of me: Dorian is what I would like to be—in other ages, perhaps” (Oscar Wilde). These three characters represent widely different types of people; in light of Wilde’s words, then, what does it truly mean to be Basil, Lord Henry, or Dorian Gray? In other words, what interests, opinions, and values held by these characters determine how each of them differ from one another? In my cross-discipline …

Is Contact Nucleation Caused By Pressure Perturbation?, Fan Yang, Will Cantrell, Alexander Kostinski, Raymond Shaw, Andrew M. Vogelmann Dec 2019

Is Contact Nucleation Caused By Pressure Perturbation?, Fan Yang, Will Cantrell, Alexander Kostinski, Raymond Shaw, Andrew M. Vogelmann

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The reason why ice nucleation is more efficient by contact nucleation than by immersion nucleation has been elusive for over half a century. Six proposed mechanisms are summarized in this study. Among them, the pressure perturbation hypothesis, which arose from recent experiments, can qualitatively explain nearly all existing results relevant to contact nucleation. To explore the plausibility of this hypothesis in a more quantitative fashion and to guide future investigations, this study assessed the magnitude of pressure perturbation needed to cause contact nucleation and the associated spatial scales. The pressure perturbations needed were estimated using measured contact nucleation efficiencies for …

The Influence Of Educational Attainment On Teenage Pregnancy In Low-Income Countries: A Systematic Literature Review, Rebekah Mohr, Jose Carbajal, Bonita B. Sharma

Journal of Social Work in the Global Community

The purpose of this study is to review the association between education and teenage pregnancy in low- and lower-middle-income countries. Teenage pregnancy deters women from achieving educational goals and from maximizing their human capital. This study was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Nine out of 4,980 articles scanned met the inclusion criteria for analysis, from 2008 to 2018. The results show reaching higher levels of education deters from teenage pregnancy in low- and lower-middle-income countries. Therefore, social work policies and programs should target access to education and school retention as a deterrence to …

#Gaslighting, Karissa Moody

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

As the utilization of social media continues to integrate itself into domains of culture, livelihood, and worldviews, the following exposition aims to introduce how such integration may pose as a new realm of gaslighting that has yet to be discussed. The progressive conceptualization of gaslighting as a form of manipulation will aid in providing readers with an understanding of this idea through a systemic lens by first, explaining underlying reasons for manipulation as an all-inclusive concept. The value of explication will serve in identifying plausible reasons of manipulation which pertain to the concept of gaslighting within social media. Within this …

A Commentary On Trauma’S Different Layers, Mike Kaufman , M.A., L.M.F.T.

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

This article highlights how trauma may be caused by factors aside from catastrophic events, physical violence or accidents resulting in physical injury. Examples of trauma beyond the more commonly known causes are detailed. This article also emphasizes how individuals engaging in psychotherapy may at times lack awareness that their self-reported dilemma, or symptoms, may stem from early relational trauma. The following commentary originated with first-hand clinical experience and was reinforced by literature. It is important to recognize that individuals reporting symptoms of depression and anxiety are most effectively treated in psychotherapy when past trauma is accurately identified as the root …

Narrative Therapy And Shame: A Testimony View, Andrew Earle

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

This article provides the clinician with an overview of how narrative thought can create spaces for possibilities and hope midst shame. As a part of an integrative practice, it is important for the therapist to acknowledge the impact various ideas have on the people who consult them. This testimony and other literature will be used to make a case that the existence of shame is contingent on structural assumptions of the self.

The Effect Of Follow-Up Contact In Reoccurrence Of Psychiatric Readmission, David Mallo , Psy.D., Ian E. Wickramasekera , Psy.D. Dec 2019

The Effect Of Follow-Up Contact In Reoccurrence Of Psychiatric Readmission, David Mallo , Psy.D., Ian E. Wickramasekera , Psy.D.

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

This study examined if clinical contact with clients within one week of discharge from an inpatient psychiatric facility had an influence on their readmission. One of the factors explored in this study was whether the impact of clinical contact could reduce readmission rates after discharge used to develop intervention strategies to reduce readmission. The study found that those individuals who had a case management appointment set within the first seven days of discharge from an inpatient psychiatric facility was approximately eight times more likely than non-clinical referrals, 32 % vs. 4 %, to be not readmitted to an inpatient psychiatric …

On Eagle’S Wings: A Caregiver’S Story, Heather J. Carlson Dec 2019

On Eagle’S Wings: A Caregiver’S Story, Heather J. Carlson

Counseling and Family Therapy Scholarship Review

Increased attention is being focused on the Sandwich Generation, a rapidly growing subset of the adult population usually in their 40’s to 60’s who are the primary caregiver for children under the age of 18, as well an aging parent(s). The pull between the two generations is one of the greatest struggles facing mid-life adults ‘sandwiched’ between caring for their developing children and their aging parents. The delicacies of balancing logistical and emotional resources among the generations can be overwhelming for sandwich generation caregivers. The resulting stress on caregivers is related to higher absenteeism from work, levels of depression, …

Machine Learning And Deep Learning Applications For International Ocean Discovery Program Geoscience Research, Brandon De La Houssaye, Peter Flaming, Quinton Nixon, Gary Acton

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we present the use of a machine learning-based architecture for use in regression tasks with image data collected by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) – in part funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) – for scientific use during seago- ing operations aboard the JOIDES Resolution scientific drillship as well as onshore at the Texas A&M University IODP Headquarters. Our data science-driven approach integrates modern programming techniques in Python, computer vision, machine learning, and deep learning applica- tions with the traditional geoscience linear regression architecture such that the modeling of high-resolution spectral data with the …

Analyzing Influences On U.S. Baby Name Trends, Laura Ludwig, Mallory Hightower, Daniel W. Engels, Monnie Mcgee Dec 2019

Analyzing Influences On U.S. Baby Name Trends, Laura Ludwig, Mallory Hightower, Daniel W. Engels, Monnie Mcgee

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, an analysis is presented of the changing baby namespace and a model is created for predicting if a name's popularity is trending up or down. Just as cultures and societies change over time, baby names evolve to reflect these changes. By analyzing name phonemes and historical influences, one can better understand the underlying causes of the changing name trend. Utilizing the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) name registry and historical figure data sets, the influence of historical figures and name pronunciation on the naming trend was examined. Two neural networks were created to predict name trend, one …

Identifying At-Risk Clients For Xyz Packaging, Co., Eduardo Carlos Cantu Medellin, Mihir Parikh, Christopher Graves, Brendon Jones Dec 2019

Identifying At-Risk Clients For Xyz Packaging, Co., Eduardo Carlos Cantu Medellin, Mihir Parikh, Christopher Graves, Brendon Jones

SMU Data Science Review

We present a multi-algorithmic modeling approach for the identification of at-risk customers for XYZ Packaging Inc. We define at-risk customers as those having declining seasonally adjusted gross income forecasts which are a strong indicator of impending customer churn. Customer retention is an area of interest regardless of industry but is especially vital in commodity-based low margin industries. We employ traditional Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and Anomaly Detection algorithms for discriminating changes in customer revenue patterns. Ultimately, we identify a meaningful proportion of clients whose forward-looking quarterly demand can be predicted within an actionable degree of accuracy.

Review Of Making Things And Drawing Boundaries, Greta K. Suiter

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

Jentery Sayers’s edited volume moves forward long-standing debates within the Digital Humanities. This collection of essays increase the reader’s general understanding of what the digital humanities are and will leave the reader with more questions around who the digital humanities are. Many of these essays work against expected disciplinary norms and assumptions and the reader is given multiple viewpoints to consider. Topics such as invisible labor and the value of labor, collaboration and inverting expertise expectations, and digital artifacts and how humanists study and/or create them, are given ample room for exploration and are examined from multiple perspectives with many …
