Examining The Moderating Role Of Promotive Factors On The Relationship Between Bullying Victimization And Suicidal Behavior, Rachel Simonds Dec 2019

Examining The Moderating Role Of Promotive Factors On The Relationship Between Bullying Victimization And Suicidal Behavior, Rachel Simonds

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bullying is one of the most common challenges that youth in the United States face that can often have negative impacts on children’s lives and mental health. One potential negative outcome of bullying victimization is increased risk for suicidal behavior, including suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Implementing interventions and supports for youth involved in bullying has the ability to decrease risk for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts.

Previous literature supports that those involved in bullying are at an increased risk for both suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. Evidence supports promotive factors that help minimize negative outcomes those who are involved …

Strongly Coupled Fermions On The Lattice, Nouman Tariq Butt Dec 2019

Strongly Coupled Fermions On The Lattice, Nouman Tariq Butt

Dissertations - ALL

Since its inception with the pioneering work of Ken Wilson, lattice field theory has come a long way. Lattice formulations have enabled us to probe the non-perturbative structure of theories such as QCD and have also helped in exploring the phase structure and classification of phase transitions in a variety of other strongly coupled theories of interest to both high energy and condensed matter theorists. The lattice approach to QCD has led to an understanding of quark confinement, chiral symmetry breaking and hadronic physics. Correlation functions of hadronic operators and scattering matrix of hadronic states can be calculated in terms …

Applications Of Elastic Modeling, Thermobarometry, And Thermal History Modeling To (Ultra)High-Pressure Metamorphic Rocks, Joseph Patrick Gonzalez Dec 2019

Applications Of Elastic Modeling, Thermobarometry, And Thermal History Modeling To (Ultra)High-Pressure Metamorphic Rocks, Joseph Patrick Gonzalez

Dissertations - ALL

Subduction zones are tectonically active regions that produce seismicity and volcanism during plate convergence and ultimately recycle crustal material into the mantle. Since these regions dictate many global scale tectonic and geochemical processes (i.e. orogenesis, volatile flux into the mantle, etc.), it is important to understand the depth-temperature conditions of mineral reactions during the subduction-exhumation metamorphic cycle. (Ultra)high-pressure ((U)HP) metamorphic rocks, such as blueschists and eclogites, are formed during metamorphism of subducted crust and sediments along relatively cold geothermal gradients. (U)HP metamorphic rocks may be incorporated into the subduction zone accretionary wedge and exhumed, thereby providing a direct records of …

Imitation Game: Military Institutions And Westernization In Indonesia And Japan, Evan Abelard Laksmana Dec 2019

Imitation Game: Military Institutions And Westernization In Indonesia And Japan, Evan Abelard Laksmana

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation explains why and how some militaries are better than others at emulating the organization and doctrine of foreign armed forces. I define military emulation as the changes to a pre-existing military organization resulting from an imitation of another military's structure or doctrine. The changes stem from the diffusion of military ideas from one polity to another. I call those ideas `theory of victory' and `theory of corporatism'. The former explains the next mission a military needs to fight and how to win, while the latter details how intra-military institutions and their raison d'etres are designed, maintained, and defended …

Multimedia Input Modes, The Modality Principle, And The Redundancy Principle For University Esl Students’ Learning, Yinan Liu Dec 2019

Multimedia Input Modes, The Modality Principle, And The Redundancy Principle For University Esl Students’ Learning, Yinan Liu

Dissertations - ALL

This study compared three multimedia input modes in the modality and redundancy principles (Mayer, 2009) in terms of university ESL (English as a Second Language) students’ learning and examined the applicability of the modality and redundancy principles for ESL students. Mayer’s modality and redundancy principles (2009) inform the design of effective multimedia lessons. However, the two principles originally stemmed from experimental studies examining students’ learning in their native language and did not include ESL students in the discussion. Based on the modality and redundancy principles, added on-screen text and graphics lead to an overload in learner’s visual channel, which undermines …

Sampling And Characterizing Evolving Communities In Social Networks, Humphrey Appiah Mensah Dec 2019

Sampling And Characterizing Evolving Communities In Social Networks, Humphrey Appiah Mensah

Dissertations - ALL

One of the most important structures in social networks is communities. Understanding communities is useful in many applications, such as suggesting a friend for a user in an online friendship network, recommending a product for a user in an e-commerce network, etc. However, before studying anything about communities, researchers first need to collect appropriate data. Getting complete access to the data for community studies is unrealistic in most cases. In this work, we address the problem of crawling networks to identify community structure. Firstly, we present a network sampling technique to crawl the community structure of dynamic networks when there …

Development And Application Of Nmr Diffusometry And Relaxometry Methodologies To Study Organic-Inorganic Interactions At Nanomaterial Surfaces, Emily Grace Ripka Dec 2019

Development And Application Of Nmr Diffusometry And Relaxometry Methodologies To Study Organic-Inorganic Interactions At Nanomaterial Surfaces, Emily Grace Ripka

Dissertations - ALL

Colloidal nanomaterials like semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have size-, shape-, and composition-dependent optoelectronic properties with applications ranging from photovoltaics, to sensing, to medical diagnostics and treatment. These materials also have very high surfaceto- volume ratios, with intricate surface chemistries which control nearly every aspect of their chemical, physical, and colloidal properties. The interaction of the surface with the environment is limited via capping the surface of the nanomaterials with a shell of organic capping molecules. The environment-dependent binding of this organic shell is thus an extremely important aspect of nanomaterial design, however the methodologies to probe these interactions in-situ are …

The Nature Of Being, Byron Simmons Dec 2019

The Nature Of Being, Byron Simmons

Dissertations - ALL

There would seem to be differences which lie not in the natures of certain entities, but in their being. Take, for example, the difference between an actual and a merely possible dollar. This difference is utterly unlike the difference between a cat and a canary, a mountain and a molehill, or a table and a tablet. For these things differ in their nature. But an actual and a merely possible dollar need not differ in their nature. They might have exactly the same size, shape, weight, and chemical composition; they might well be perfect—perhaps even indiscernible—duplicates. Yet, for all their …

Copula-Based Multimodal Data Fusion For Inference With Dependent Observations, Shan Zhang Dec 2019

Copula-Based Multimodal Data Fusion For Inference With Dependent Observations, Shan Zhang

Dissertations - ALL

Fusing heterogeneous data from multiple modalities for inference problems has been an attractive and important topic in recent years. There are several challenges in multi-modal fusion, such as data heterogeneity and data correlation. In this dissertation, we investigate inference problems with heterogeneous modalities by taking into account nonlinear cross-modal dependence. We apply copula based methodology to characterize this dependence.

In distributed detection, the goal often is to minimize the probability of detection error at the fusion center (FC) based on a fixed number of observations collected by the sensors. We design optimal detection algorithms at the FC using a regular …

Construction 4.0 – Digital Transformation Of One Of The Oldest Industries, Robert Klinc, Žiga Turk

Economic and Business Review

In the early 2010s, the German industry started their reform and revival under the keyword "Industrie Vier Punkt Null". The European Union’s strategies adopted most of the ideas and member states followed. The European construction industry too stared to explore how to benefit from it. In this review paper, we explain the ideas behind Industry 4.0. We present aspects of Industry 4.0: what it means for the customer, business and industry as a whole. Based on that framework we analysed the potentials of Industry 4.0 in the construction industry and where – due to some specifics of the industry – …

Independent Cinema In The Digital Age: Is Digital Transformation The Only Way To Survival?, Karolina Maria Sadlowska, Paula Sonja Karlsson, Steven Caldwell Brown

Economic and Business Review

Development of digital technologies has resulted in the creative and cultural industries having to adapt business models in light of evolving consumer preferences. This paper aims to examine how independent cinemas can transform their delivery in light of the challenges posed by digital disruption, and more specifically, whether this has to focus entirely on digital transformation. This conceptual paper examines one independent cinema in Scotland, concluding that digitalisation should be used to complement existing activities, along with exploring other innovative business models. It is crucial to understand that the old-time patterns of running a business have irrevocably changed.

All Decisions

This case involved a holdover lease expiration dispute where the court ruled in favor of the tenant. The key legal point was the implication of the continuation of a tenancy on the same terms as the original lease when parties continue their landlord-tenant relationship without creating a new agreement, as established in City of New York v. Penn. R.R. Co. The court found that the failure to serve the Petition and Notice of Petition to the required address, as per the lease terms, was a crucial factor in granting the tenant's motion and dismissing the case for lack of personal …

Ecdysoneless, A Novel Regulator Of Ca2+ Homeostasis And Metabolism, Aniruddha Sarkar Dec 2019

Ecdysoneless, A Novel Regulator Of Ca2+ Homeostasis And Metabolism, Aniruddha Sarkar

Theses & Dissertations

The hallmarks of cancer include sustained proliferation and survival in the face of cellular stresses imposed by the oncogenic drive, as well as metabolic rewiring for tumor growth under adverse nutritional conditions. Adaptive alterations in key biochemical networks that underlie metabolic rewiring represent potential opportunities to develop new therapeutic strategies against cancer.

My thesis focuses on mammalian Ecdysoneless (ECD), a conserved homolog of the fly Ecdysoneless gene product, which engages fundamental cell biological processes of ER stress, Ca2+ signaling and metabolism to help sustain the oncogenic drive in tumor cells. Recent studies from our laboratory provide a clear evidence …

Burden And Risk Of Non-Aids Defining Cancers In Hiv-Infected Persons Receiving Antiretroviral Therapy, Brittney L. Dickey Dec 2019

Burden And Risk Of Non-Aids Defining Cancers In Hiv-Infected Persons Receiving Antiretroviral Therapy, Brittney L. Dickey

Theses & Dissertations

The burden of cancers not previously associated with an HIV infection, called non-AIDS defining cancers (NADCs), have increased in the years since highly active anti-retroviral therapy has been introduced. The studies in this dissertation attempted to quantify this burden via incidence and mortality compared to the general population. Further, an assessment of risk factors and creation of a predictive risk model, a nomogram, were utilized to better understand how factors associated with demographics, lifestyle, and immune response affected risk for an NADC diagnosis once therapy was initiated and HIV better controlled. Standardized incidence and mortality ratios showed that burden of …

Acid Resistance Mechanisms In Staphylococcus Aureus, Chunyi Zhou Dec 2019

Acid Resistance Mechanisms In Staphylococcus Aureus, Chunyi Zhou

Theses & Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of opportunistic infections in community and health care settings. To thrive in a great variety of environments, S. aureus has developed the capability of tolerating temporary pH changes, as well as resisting constant acid stress. To evaluate the impact of strong and weak acid stress on S. aureus, growth patterns of JE2 were monitored when cultured in chemically defined media (CDM) at various pH in the presence of hydrochloric acid (HCl), acetic acid, and lactic acid. Our results showed that S. aureus responds to strong and weak acids in different manners. S. aureus …

Mechanism Of Bax/Bak Activation In Apoptotic Signaling, Kai Huang Dec 2019

Mechanism Of Bax/Bak Activation In Apoptotic Signaling, Kai Huang

Theses & Dissertations

The Bcl-2 family proteins, including the anti-apoptotic members, pro-apoptotic effectors Bax/Bak, and the BH3-only proteins, are key components of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. The BH3-only protein Bid is critical for the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis after TRAIL-induced death receptor activation. However, the mechanism of Bid activation during TRAIL-induced apoptosis is unclear. By putting back wild-type and mutants of Bid in Bid deficient (Bid KO) and Bid/Bax/Bak TKO colon cancer cells, we demonstrated that cleavage by caspase 8 and mitochondrial targeting are critical events for Bid activation. One of the biggest mysteries in apoptosis is how Bax/Bak was activated by BH3-only …

Cholesterol Biosynthesis In The Nervous System With An Emphasis On Desmosterolosis, Luke Allen Dec 2019

Cholesterol Biosynthesis In The Nervous System With An Emphasis On Desmosterolosis, Luke Allen

Theses & Dissertations

Cholesterol biosynthesis is integral to proper neurodevelopment due to the reliance on de novo synthesis of cholesterol in the brain. Disruptions in this process have devastating outcomes for human life characterized by several phenotypic manifestations concomitant with developmental delay. The cholesterol biosynthesis disorder desmosterolosis is an extremely rare disorder with a severe clinical phenotype, however, the models used to study this disease are not well characterized. In addition to genetic disruptions in cholesterol biosynthesis, pharmacological perturbation is an understudied side effect of many commonly prescribed drugs. Here we present a characterization of the sterol profile of the mouse model of …

Lifestyle Management For Vestibular Disorders, Michelle Pock Dec 2019

Lifestyle Management For Vestibular Disorders, Michelle Pock

Student Capstone Papers

Individuals with vestibular disorders have concerns that impact lifestyle including limiting activities of daily living, limiting participation in social events, difficulty driving, and difficulty working (Cohen, 2014). Occupational therapists are able to help individuals with vestibular disorders by task analyzing symptom provoking activities, assessing the impact of symptoms on occupations, providing adaptations, and providing ways to modify environments (Gronski, Neville, Kannenberg, & Cohen, 2017). While occupational therapists are qualified to provide services to sustain and improve the occupational performance of individuals with vestibular disorders, occupational therapy is not well represented in this area particularly in addressing lifestyle components for vestibular …

PCOM Scholarly Works

Cancer cell stemness (CCS) plays critical roles in both malignancy maintenance and metastasis, yet the underlying molecular mechanisms are far from complete. Although the importance of SOX2 in cancer development and CCS are well recognized, the role of MTA3 in these processes is unknown. In this study, we used esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) as a model system to demonstrate that MTA3 can repress both CCS and metastasis in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, by forming a repressive complex with GATA3, MTA3 downregulates SOX2OT, subsequently suppresses the SOX2OT/SOX2 axis, and ultimately represses CCS and metastasis. More importantly, MTA3

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

p53 acetylation is indispensable for its transcriptional activity and tumor suppressive function. However, the identity of reader protein(s) for p53 acetylation remains elusive. PBRM1, the second most highly mutated tumor suppressor gene in kidney cancer, encodes PBRM1. Here, we identify PBRM1 as a reader for p53 acetylation on lysine 382 (K382Ac) through its bromodomain 4 (BD4). Notably, mutations on key residues of BD4 disrupt recognition of p53 K382Ac. The mutation in BD4 also reduces p53 binding to promoters of target genes such as CDKN1A (p21). Consequently, the PBRM1 BD4 mutant fails to fully support p53 transcriptional activity and is defective …

Exact Results For Scattering On Ultrashort Plane Wave Backgrounds, A Ilderton

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We give exact results for the emission spectra of both nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production and nonlinear Compton scattering in ultraintense, ultrashort duration plane wave backgrounds, modeled as delta-function pulses. This includes closed form expressions for total scattering probabilities. We show explicitly that these probabilities do not exhibit the power-law scaling with intensity associated with the conjectured breakdown of (Furry picture) perturbation theory, instead scaling logarithmically in the high-intensity limit.

A hybrid electric tracked ground vehicle (HETGV) can reduce military fuel usage, however a review of current tools determined they are not suitable to estimate HEGTV performance. Based on topographic data and vehicle attributes, this research developed an estimation tool by creating a model to determine tracked vehicle energy and fuel requirements, and using these requirements, created a HEGTV cost and performance optimisation for the Bradley fighting vehicle energy system. The optimised design reduced fuel consumption by 15%, and met the vehicle's peak power requirement of 365 kW, with a recommended configuration of a 135 kW generator and 100 kWh …
