This study provides psychometric assessment of a resilience scale with a sample of women living with HIV. Baseline data were used from a longitudinal HIV disclosure study of 124 women aged between 18-63 collected between 2001 and 2004 in a large Midwestern city. The Rasch model was used to examine the psychometric properties of the resilience scale. Results indicated that the resilience instrument meets the Rasch model application assumptions. Evidence of validity suggested the resilience instrument demonstrated good item and person fit, as well as good item and person reliability. Most items showed measurement invariance across different age and racial …
Select Criminal Law And Procedure Cases From The U.S. Supreme Court's 2018-2019 Term, Eve Brensike Primus, Kristin Froehle
Select Criminal Law And Procedure Cases From The U.S. Supreme Court's 2018-2019 Term, Eve Brensike Primus, Kristin Froehle
Articles
Although the 2018-19 Term at the Supreme Court did not include any blockbuster rulings like Carpenter v. United States, the Court issued a number of significant criminal law and procedure rulings. It addressed warrantless blood-alcohol testing, the dual-sovereignty doctrine, the right to trial by jury, ineffective assistance of trial counsel, questions of incorporation, prisoners' competence to be executed, permissible methods of execution, and some important statutory interpretation questions. Looking back on the Term, Justice Gorsuch clearly solidified his position as the libertarian "swing" vote in criminal procedure cases. He joined the liberals to uphold a defendant's right to trial …
The Effects Of Health Beliefs, Acculturation, And A Culturally Appropriate Teaching Intervention On Parents' Knowledge Of And Compliance With Tuberculosis Treatment In A Mexican-American Population: A Preliminary Analysis, Renee P. Mcleod
Dissertations
The primary purpose of this research study, using a correlational and comparative descriptive design, was to examine the effects of health beliefs, acculturation, and a culturally appropriate Spanish-language audiotaped novena on knowledge of Tuberculosis (TB), and compliance with treatment and medications in Mexican-American parents' of a child with TB infection. Due to the limited number of subjects obtained (N = 31), the research data and analyses are presented as preliminary findings since meaningful hypothesis testing would be premature at this time.

Character And Ethical Behavior Of Nurses, Nelda S. Godfrey
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among personal normative characteristics, personal descriptive characteristics, and ethical behavior of nurses in practice. Little is known about the place of virtue theory in nursing practice and the factors that influence the nurse as moral agent. One hundred thirty-one registered nurses with at least six months' experience working in direct cam positions in one of three hospital practice settings—urban, suburban, and rural—participated in the study. Three instruments were used with the randomized sample: (a) Demographic Data Form, (b) The INSURE Survey™, an instrument used to measure attitudes of potential employees, and …

Ammonium-containing aerosols are a major component of wintertime air pollution in many densely populated regions around the world. Especially in mountain basins, the formation of persistent cold-air pools (PCAPs) can enhance particulate matter with diameters less than 2.5 µm (PM2.5) to levels above air quality standards. Under these conditions, PM2.5 in the Great Salt Lake region of northern Utah has been shown to be primarily composed of ammonium nitrate; however, its formation processes and sources of its precursors are not fully understood. Hence, it is key to understanding the emission sources of its gas phase precursor, ammonia …

In recent years, the deployment of satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has led to production of enormous amounts of data and to novel data processing and analysis techniques for monitoring crop conditions. One overlooked data source amid these efforts, however, is incorporation of 3D information derived from multi-spectral imagery and photogrammetry algorithms into crop monitoring algorithms. Few studies and algorithms have taken advantage of 3D UAV information in monitoring and assessment of plant conditions. In this study, different aspects of UAV point cloud information for enhancing remote sensing evapotranspiration (ET) models, particularly the Two-Source Energy Balance Model (TSEB), over …

Perinatal Propylthiouracil-Induced Hypothyroidism Impaired Motor Coordination In Adult Female Offspring, Miski A. Khairinisa, Yusuke Takatsuru, Izuki Amano, Michifumi Kokubo, Asahi Haijima, Wataru Miyazaki, Noriyuki Koibuchi
Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
Thyroid hormone (TH) play crucial roles in the growth and development of brain. Efficiency of TH during the perinatal period results in severe mental and physical retardation, known as cretinism in humans. Animal models have largely focused on mild and severe hypothyroidism associated with deficits in body weight, developmental delays, and cognitive deficits. Although various behavioral analyses have been reported, the effect of perinatal hypothyroidism in adult female mice has not been clarified. The aim of this study was to examine whether propylthiouracil (PTU)-induced hypothyroidism could impair motor coordination in female offspring. We used C57BL/6j mice and divided them into …
The Ladle And The Knife: Power Projection And Force Deployment Under Reagan, Mathew Kawecki
The Ladle And The Knife: Power Projection And Force Deployment Under Reagan, Mathew Kawecki
War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses
This thesis examines the nature and impact of the Reagan administration’s self-described projection of “peace through strength.” It argues that Reagan’s defense spending surge, “Star Wars” (SDI) missile shield policy, and 1983 invasion of Grenada gave the president confidence and political cover that allowed him to withdraw U.S. Marines from Beirut in early 1984. Analysts and commentators focus on his muscular power projection like defense spending, SDI, and the invasion of Grenada, but in practice Reagan exercised a high level of restraint in troop deployment. These projections of power and the avoidance of protracted war in Lebanon gave Reagan further …

Molecular Insights Into Major Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma Entities With Advances In A Representative Model System, Tayla B. Heavican
Molecular Insights Into Major Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma Entities With Advances In A Representative Model System, Tayla B. Heavican
Theses & Dissertations
Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a group of complex clinicopathological entities associated with an aggressive clinical course. Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) and PTCL-not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) are the two most frequent categories accounting for more than 50% of PTCLs. Gene expression profiling (GEP) defined molecular signatures for AITL and delineated biological and prognostic subgroups within PTCL-NOS (PTCL-GATA3 and PTCL-TBX21). Genomic copy number analysis and targeted sequencing revealed unique genomic abnormalities and oncogenic pathways, indicating distinct oncogenic evolution. PTCL-GATA3 exhibited higher genomic complexity characterized by frequent loss or mutation of tumor suppressor genes targeting the CDKN2A/B-TP53 axis and PTEN-PI3K pathways. …
Brca1 & Ctdp1 Brct Domainomics In The Dna Damage Response, Kimiko L. Krieger
Brca1 & Ctdp1 Brct Domainomics In The Dna Damage Response, Kimiko L. Krieger
Theses & Dissertations
Genomic instability is one of the enabling characteristics of cancer. DNA damage response pathways are important for genomic integrity and cell cycle progression. Defects in DNA damage repair can often lead to cell cycle arrest, cell death, or tumorigenesis. The activation of the DNA damage response includes tightly regulated signaling cascades that involve kinase phosphorylation and modular domains that scaffold phosphorylated motifs to coordinate recruitment of DNA repair proteins. Modular domains are conserved tertiary structures of a protein that can fold, function, and evolve independently from an intact protein. One of the most common modular domains involved in DNA damage …
The Role Of E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Fbxo9 In Normal And Malignant Hematopoiesis, R. Willow Hynes-Smith
The Role Of E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Fbxo9 In Normal And Malignant Hematopoiesis, R. Willow Hynes-Smith
Theses & Dissertations
Hematopoiesis is a critical system that provides blood cells necessary for nutrient and oxygen transfer throughout an organism and for protection from harmful agents. It is maintained throughout life by the hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that reside within the bone marrow (BM) and are responsible for providing billions of new cells each day. HSCs maintain a careful balance between a quiescent state, that sustains the integrity of the stem cells, and a proliferative state, that provides new cells to replenish those that undergo apoptosis. Hematopoiesis is regulated by a variety of intrinsic pathways and extrinsic signals such as cytokine signaling, …

Hdac1 Is A Required Cofactor Of Cbfβ-Smmhc And A Therapeutic Target In Inversion 16 Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Lisa E. Richter
Theses & Dissertations
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a neoplastic disease characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation and accumulation of immature myeloid cells. A common mutation in AML is the inversion of chromosome 16 [inv(16)], which generates a fusion between the genes for core binding factor beta (CBFB) and smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (MYH11), forming the oncogene CBFB-MYH11. The expressed protein, CBFβ-SMMHC, forms a heterodimer with the key hematopoietic transcription factor RUNX1. Although CBFβ-SMMHC was previously thought to dominantly repress RUNX1, recent work suggests that CBFβ-SMMHC functions together with RUNX1 to activate transcription of specific target genes.

Targeted Inhibition Of Histone Deacetyltransferases For Pancreatic Cancer Therapy, Richard Laschanzky
Targeted Inhibition Of Histone Deacetyltransferases For Pancreatic Cancer Therapy, Richard Laschanzky
Theses & Dissertations
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a deadly disease with a dismal five-year survival rate of less than 10%. One major obstacle in PDAC treatment is acquired drug resistance. Pan-histone deacetylase inhibitors (pan-HDACi) are a relatively new class of anti-cancer drugs, with demonstrated ability to overcome drug resistance and re-sensitize PDAC tumors to Gemcitabine (Gem). These agents target HDACs, a family of 18 enzymes (divided into four classes, I-IV) that catalyze the deacetylation of histones and other cellular proteins and have multiple effects on cell growth, differentiation, survival, and tumorigenesis. Although pan-HDACi have shown significant efficacy in preclinical analysis, and some …
The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Regulating Macrophage And Fibroblast Activation Within The Breast Cancer Tumor Microenvironment, Brandon J. Griess
The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Regulating Macrophage And Fibroblast Activation Within The Breast Cancer Tumor Microenvironment, Brandon J. Griess
Theses & Dissertations
The tumor microenvironment (TME) is a key determining factor in breast cancer, especially the more aggressive subtype triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). The activated fibroblasts and macrophages within the TME have many tumor promoting functions. Therefore, targeting their activation presents a novel therapeutic approach in TNBC. My work studied the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during fibroblast and macrophage activation in breast cancer.
My studies showed that expression of the secreted antioxidant enzyme, EcSOD, is silenced in breast cancer samples, in part, via increased promoter methylation. The re-expression of EcSOD inhibited c-Met activation in the TNBC cell line, MDA-MB231. …
Defining The Role Of Tyrosine Phosphorylation In The Regulation Of Connexin43 In Cardiac Diseases, Li Zheng
Defining The Role Of Tyrosine Phosphorylation In The Regulation Of Connexin43 In Cardiac Diseases, Li Zheng
Theses & Dissertations
Connexins are integral membrane proteins that oligomerize to form gap junction channels. Ions and small molecules diffuse intercellularly through these channels, allowing individual cellular events to synchronize into the functional response of an entire organ. Gap junction channels composed of Connexin43 (Cx43) mediate electrical coupling and impulse propagation in the normal working myocardium. In the failing heart, Cx43 remodeling (decreased expression, altered phosphorylation state, loss at intercalated discs, and increased presence at lateral membranes) contributes to rhythm disturbances and contractile dysfunction. While there is considerable information regarding key interactions of Cx43 in the regulation of gap junction channels, unfortunately, the …

Misselling On The Non-Banking Consumer Credit Market In The Light Of Current Market Problems, Magdalena Paleczna
internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)
Loan institutions and the credit services they offer represent a growing percentage of the credit market in Poland. Observing this market, and the proceedings conducted by the President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection against loan institutions, confirms the existence of large-scale irregularities that directly affect consumers, essentially non-professional financial market participants. These irregularities include misselling, which is a practice infringing collective consumer interests and consisting of the offering of financial services (in the case of loan institutions – credit services) which do not correspond to the real needs of consumers or are offered in a manner inadequate …

Anticipation, Accompaniment, And A Good Death In Perinatal Care., Bryanna S. Moore, Brian S. Carter, Bryan Beaven, Katie House, Joel House
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
The ethics of perinatal care, and the experiences of families who receive such care, remains a nascent area of inquiry. It can be hard to see how existing "good death" constructs apply to the experiences of fetal patients and their families. In this paper, we explore two themes raised by a case at our fetal health center: anticipation and accompaniment. In this case, a mother presented to our fetal health center; her unborn son, our fetal patient, was diagnosed with life-threatening hypoplastic left heart syndrome and endocardial fibroelastosis. The parents were told that their son's life expectancy, upon birth, was …
Gasdermins In Apoptosis: New Players In An Old Game., Corey Rogers, Emad S. Alnemri
Gasdermins In Apoptosis: New Players In An Old Game., Corey Rogers, Emad S. Alnemri
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death (PCD) that plays critical physiological roles in removing superfluous or dangerous cell populations that are unneeded or threatening to the health of the host organism. Although the molecular pathways leading to activation of the apoptotic program have been extensively studied and characterized starting in the 1970s, new evidence suggests that members of the gasdermin superfamily are novel pore-forming proteins that augment apoptosis by permeabilizing the mitochondria and participate in the final stages of the apoptotic program by inducing secondary necrosis/pyroptosis. These findings may explain outstanding questions in the field such as why …
