Gaze Collaboration Patterns Of Successful And Unsuccessful Programming Pairs Using Cross-Recurrence Quantification Analysis, Maureen Villamor, Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

A dual eye tracking experiment was performed on pairs of novice programmers as they traced and debugged fragments of code. These programming pairs were categorized into successful and unsuccessful pairs based on their debugging scores. Cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA), an analysis using cross-recurrence plots (CRP), was used to determine whether there are significant differences in the gaze collaboration patterns between these pair categories. Results showed that successful and unsuccessful pairs can be characterized distinctively based on their CRPs and CRQA metrics. This study also attempted to interpret the CRQA metrics in relation to how the pairs collaborated in order to …

A Compendium Of Core Lexicon Checklists, Sarah Grace Dalton, Hana Kim, Jessica D. Richardson, Heather Harris Wright

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Core Lexicon (CoreLex) is a relatively new approach assessing lexical use in discourse. CoreLex examines the specific lexical items used to tell a story, or how typical lexical items are compared with a normative sample. This method has great potential for clinical utilization because CoreLex measures are fast, easy to administer, and correlate with microlinguistic and macrolinguistic discourse measures. The purpose of this article is to provide clinicians with a centralized resource for currently available CoreLex checklists, including information regarding development, norms, and guidelines for use.

Moving Toward Non-Transcription Based Discourse Analysis In Stable And Progressive Aphasia, Sarah Grace Dalton, H. Isabel Hubbard, Jessica D. Richardson Dec 2019

Moving Toward Non-Transcription Based Discourse Analysis In Stable And Progressive Aphasia, Sarah Grace Dalton, H. Isabel Hubbard, Jessica D. Richardson

Speech Pathology and Audiology Faculty Research and Publications

Measurement of communication ability at the discourse level holds promise for predicting how well persons with stable (e.g., stroke-induced), or progressive aphasia navigate everyday communicative interactions. However, barriers to the clinical utilization of discourse measures have persisted. Recent advancements in the standardization of elicitation protocols and the existence of large databases for development of normative references have begun to address some of these barriers. Still, time remains a consistently reported barrier by clinicians. Non-transcription based discourse measurement would reduce the time required for discourse analysis, making clinical utilization a reality. The purpose of this article is to present evidence regarding …

Antimicrobial Peptide Identification Using Multi-Scale Convolutional Network, Xin Su, Jing Xu, Yanbin Yin, Xiongwen Quan, Han Zhang

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Background: Antibiotic resistance has become an increasingly serious problem in the past decades. As an alternative choice, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have attracted lots of attention. To identify new AMPs, machine learning methods have been commonly used. More recently, some deep learning methods have also been applied to this problem.

Results: In this paper, we designed a deep learning model to identify AMP sequences. We employed the embedding layer and the multi-scale convolutional network in our model. The multi-scale convolutional network, which contains multiple convolutional layers of varying filter lengths, could utilize all latent features captured by the multiple convolutional layers. …

Chloroviruses, James L. Van Etten, Irina V. Agarkova, David D. Dunigan

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Chloroviruses are large dsDNA, plaque-forming viruses that infect certain chlorella-like green algae; the algae are normally mutualistic endosymbionts of protists and metazoans and are often referred to as zoochlorellae. The viruses are ubiquitous in inland aqueous environments throughout the world and occasionally single types reach titers of thousands of plaque-forming units per ml of native water. The viruses are icosahedral in shape with a spike structure located at one of the vertices. They contain an internal membrane that is required for infectivity. The viral genomes are 290 to 370 kb in size, which encode up to 16 tRNAs and 330 …

Tanzania Journal of Science

Breeding programs are crucial for boosting productivity and increase sustainability of aquaculture. Over years, Tanzania has witnessed fluctuation in its capture fisheries production from 320,900 to 375, 535 and back to 362,595 metric tonnes in the years 2000, 2005 and 2016, respectively (URT 2016). The declining trend in fish production has made fish supply in the country unstable and conversely, increased the demand for fishes to about 730,000 metric tonnes in 2017. However, the local aquaculture production has not increased accordingly. Tanzania is importing fish mainly from Asia to meet its increased demand. In 2017, a total of 2,055,721 kg …

Target-To-Target Interaction In Through-The-Wall Radars Under Path Loss Compensated Multipath Exploitation-Based Signal Model For Sparse Image Reconstruction, Emmanuel K. Kokumo, Baraka Maiseli, Abdi T. Abdalla Dec 2019

Target-To-Target Interaction In Through-The-Wall Radars Under Path Loss Compensated Multipath Exploitation-Based Signal Model For Sparse Image Reconstruction, Emmanuel K. Kokumo, Baraka Maiseli, Abdi T. Abdalla

Tanzania Journal of Science

Multipath caused by reflections from interior walls of buildings has been a long-standing challenge that affects through-the-wall radar imaging. Multipath creates ghost images that introduce confusion when detecting desired targets. Traditionally, multipath exploitation techniques under the compressive sensing framework have widely been applied to address the challenge. However, the multipath component emanating from target-to-target interactions has not been considered–a consequence that may, under multiple target scenarios, lead to incorrect image interpretation. Besides, far targets experience more attenuation due to free space path loss, hence resulting into target undetectability. This study proposes a signal model, based on multipath exploitation techniques, by …

Preliminary Palynology Of The Karoo Equivalent Tanga Beds, Coastal Tanzania: Insights On Preservation, Age And Depositional Environments, Stephen Peter Magohe

Tanzania Journal of Science

The major challenge to the current understanding of the stratigraphy of the Tanga Basin is scarcity of biostratigraphy age-control data. A number of palynomorphs retrieved from core samples of the Tanga Beds and analysed for palynology are here presented. These include bisaccate pollen grains belonging to the Alisporites-Falcisporites complex, making about 55% average of the total assemblage. The rest of the assemblage comprises other palynomorphs (pollen and spores) and phytoclasts. The miospores documented from the studied samples have poor to fairly good preservation; the organic residues (non-pollen palynomorphs) are excellently preserved. Based on palynologic evidences, and the presence of fossil …

Effects Of Seasons And Zonation On Biochemical Contents Of Two Seagrass Species Along Dar Es Salaam Coast, Tanzania, Wamwi M. Mbaga, Esther F. Mvungi Dec 2019

Effects Of Seasons And Zonation On Biochemical Contents Of Two Seagrass Species Along Dar Es Salaam Coast, Tanzania, Wamwi M. Mbaga, Esther F. Mvungi

Tanzania Journal of Science

Accumulation and allocation of biochemicals in plants are affected by various factors. The influence of seasons and vertical zonation on biochemical contents of seagrasses Cymodocea rotundata and Thalassia hemprichii from Mjimwema seagrass meadow along the coast of Dar es Salaam were assessed. Samples were collected in 2016 during wet/rainy (April–May) and dry (June–July) seasons. Concentrations of crude protein, soluble carbohydrates, phosphorus, lipid, and proline were determined using standard methods. Significant higher levels of phosphorus, lipid, protein and proline were observed during the dry season than in wet season (p < 0.05). Likewise, seagrass population occurring at the shore zone expressed higher levels of biochemical contents than those found at the subtidal zones. The highest concentration of protein was recorded in Thalassia hemprichii (5.8 mg/g dw)), while those of lipid and carbohydrates (27.1 and 53.1 mg/g dw, respectively) were recorded in Cymodocea rotundata. The two species studied did not vary significantly in their biochemical concentrations in both seasons. Generally it was observed that the concentrations of studied biochemicals were up-regulated during the dry season and varied depending on the locations where the seagrass grow. Thus, both season and zonation played roles in biochemical accumulation in the seagrasses understudy, however not interactively.

A Microfluidic Paper-Based Analytical Device For Early Diagnosis And Prognosis Of Acute Myocardial Infarction, Lim Wei Yin Dec 2019

A Microfluidic Paper-Based Analytical Device For Early Diagnosis And Prognosis Of Acute Myocardial Infarction, Lim Wei Yin

Student Works (2020-2029)

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI), also termed as heart attack, is often clinically screened by blood test through the measurement of cardiac biomarkers (i.e., troponin (T or I), creatine kinase (CK−MB) and myoglobin) and electrocardiography (ECG) changes which are presented to the hospital. However, the early diagnosis of AMI is challenging because the detection of biomarkers such as troponin (T or I) and CK−MB are only reliable at the intermediate and later stages (> 6 hours after chest pain onset), during myocardial injury and myocardial infarction. On the other hand, myoglobin often been used as early biomarker which is detectable within …
