Ligo Analogy Lab—A Set Of Undergraduate Lab Experiments To Demonstrate Some Principles Of Gravitational Wave Detection, Dennis Ugolini, Hanna Rafferty, M. Winter, C. Rockstuhl, A. Bergmann

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research

The first direct detection of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in September 2015 proved their existence, as predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, and ushered in the era of gravitational-wave interferometry. In this article, we present a set of lab course experiments at different levels of advancement, which give students insight into the basic LIGO operating principle and advanced detection techniques. Starting with methods for folding an optical cavity, we advance to analogy experiments with sound waves that can be detected with a Michelson interferometer with an optical cavity arm. In that experiment, students also …

Review: Lincoln A. Mullen. The Chance Of Salvation: A History Of Conversion In America. Cambridge, Ma: Harvard University Press, 2017., Ben Wright

Mormon Studies Review

This bold and exciting book convincingly demonstrates how the crucible of the nineteenth century transformed American religion from something inherited to chosen. Conversion drove this rise of religious choice, and Lincoln Mullen asserts that despite the great variety of conversion experiences, “conversions have created a common understanding of religion as choice” (p. 9). Mullen even acknowledges that most Americans in the nineteenth century remained in the religious tradition into which they were born, but by the end of the century, Americans came to think of even this stasis as a conscious choice. Whether they changed traditions or remained, by the …

Mormon Studies In Africa, Amy Hoyt Jan 2019

Mormon Studies In Africa, Amy Hoyt

Mormon Studies Review

Mormon studies, as understood by scholars, includes the scholarly examination of all of the traditions that have stemmed from Joseph Smith Jr. This essay will review the state of the field of Mormon studies in Africa and pay particular attention to two of these traditions, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Community of Christ, formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"Lifted Up In The Pride Of Their Eyes": Pride And Cultural Distinction In The Book Of Mormon, Kirk Weeden Jan 2019

"Lifted Up In The Pride Of Their Eyes": Pride And Cultural Distinction In The Book Of Mormon, Kirk Weeden

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Latter-day Saints affirm that "the Book of Mormon was... written for our day." For the believer, it is no wonder that the book contains numerous accounts of inequality. Without exception, the dynamic force in these accounts is pride, which in most cases is manifest in cultural pretentiousness and exhibitionism. While the various faces and consequences of pride and its relationship to culture in the Book of Mormon have been the subject of Latter-day Saint literature, there has, to date, been no reading of the Book of Mormon that attempts to provide a structural account of pride and its relationship to …

Arno Schmidt Among Comic Commentators On The Book Of Mormon, John Durham Peters Jan 2019

Arno Schmidt Among Comic Commentators On The Book Of Mormon, John Durham Peters

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Arno Schmidt (1914-1979) was one of the most important, prolific, and original of postwar German authors. His magnum opus, Zettels Traum (1970), appeared in 1,360 large-font, signed typescript copies that each weighed 12 kilos and resembled another intimidating modernist text, James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, in its experiments with genre, fascinating density, multilingual citations, jokey allusiveness, and mythic grandeur. Like Joyce, Schmidt pushed boundaries of all kinds and sometimes got into hot water with those who found his writings sexually and religiously indecent. As an author, his work is hard to classify; he is sometimes called an "avant-garde traditionalist:' In personal …

Narrative Doubling And The Structure Of Helaman, Kimberly M. Berkey Jan 2019

Narrative Doubling And The Structure Of Helaman, Kimberly M. Berkey

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The Book of Helaman is a segment of the Book of Mormon whose study is both imperative and complicated in underappreciated ways. The imperative behind the book of Helaman's study lies in the text's significance for the self-conception of the Book of Mormon as well as its mythmaking function for the early Saints in their imaginative mapping of the American West. Like the Book of Mormon, Helaman traffics in buried texts that disclose signs and covenants and makes explicit the latent Lamanite frame that undergirds the Book of Mormon as a whole. It presents, as well, the Book of Mormon's …

How To Do Things With Doubt, Rosalynde Welch Jan 2019

How To Do Things With Doubt, Rosalynde Welch

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

With fears of faith crisis and disaffection rising like seawater, Latter-day Saint apologetic discourse has gone forth, like Noah's dove, in search of living branches in which the sap runs. Defenders of the faith, including those addressed here, have returned with new academic sophistication, new critical interpretations, and new methods to address doubt among Latter-day Saints. In this review essay, I propose a pair of critical terms, the semantic and the performative, with which to consider this new apologetic discourse. I open with a brief reading of chapters 8 and 11 of 1 Nephi-Lehi's dream of the tree and Nephi's …

Alma's Hell: Repentance, Consequence, And The Lake Of Fire And Brimstone, Kylie Turley Jan 2019

Alma's Hell: Repentance, Consequence, And The Lake Of Fire And Brimstone, Kylie Turley

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Alma The Younger's missionary journey to Ammonihah is one of the most disturbing episodes in the Book of Mormon: scriptures are burned (Alma 14:8); converted males are "cast out" and stoned by former friends (Alma 14:7); Amulek, a respected citizen, and Alma, high priest of the church and retired chief judge, are spit upon, mocked, imprisoned, stripped naked, humiliated, starved, and beaten (Alma 14:4-22); and innocent women and children are "cast into the fire" and burned to death (Alma 14:8). Alma and Amulek are "carried... forth to the place of martyrdom;' and forced to "witness" (Alma 14:9) the "pains of …

King Mosiah's Address, Michael Ulrich Jan 2019

King Mosiah's Address, Michael Ulrich

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

King Benjamin's address is well known to readers of the Book of Mormon and is often quoted in devotional contexts. The address marks the transition between two great kings of Nephite history: Benjamin and Mosiah. It is also a moment of teaching and of testimony for the old king. From that point on, the people are officially called by the name of Christ. Another moment of teaching and of popular commitment occurs in the Book of Mosiah, although it receives less attention: the address given by King Mosiah and Alma the Elder when the latter's people arrive in Zarahemla (reported …

The Bible And The Book Of Mormon: A Review Of Literature, Nicholas J. Frederick Jan 2019

The Bible And The Book Of Mormon: A Review Of Literature, Nicholas J. Frederick

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The enigmatic relationship between the Book of Mormon and the Bible goes all the way back to one of its earliest reviewers, Restorationist Alexander Campbell, who noted inconsistencies between the two. Campbell addressed the Book of Mormon text's conflation of the Old and New Covenants, differing on details such as Jesus's birthplace and, in particular, how much the Book of Mormon's pre-Christian peoples anticipated New Testament events. The Book of Mormon prophet Lehi, Campbell wrote, "developed the records of Matthew, Luke, and John, six hundred years before John the Baptist was born." From the time of Campbell and into the …

The Book Of Mormon, Arno Schmidt, Hans-Wilhelm Kelling, Translator, John Durham Peters, Translator, Joseph M. Spencer, Translator

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

If perhaps I am certain of nothing else, I am indeed certain of one thing: I cannot resist holy books. Understand me correctly, however. I regard all of them highly-the fiery bass voices of the Qur'an; Gautama's all-tolerating claptrap of wisdom; the large compendium of Jewish cultural history called the Old Testament-but I refuse steadfastly to link the word "truth'' with any of them. Whoever imagines that he possesses the truth has lost it in that very same instant. Truth has no meaning for us. Nothing would be more unfortunate than some kind of 5 percent clause of the Spirit, …

A Review Of The Afro-Asiatic:Uto-Aztecan Proposal, Chris Rogers Jan 2019

A Review Of The Afro-Asiatic:Uto-Aztecan Proposal, Chris Rogers

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The purpose of this piece is to review the long-distance genetic linguistic relationship between languages of the Afro-Asiatic language family and the Uto-Aztecan language family suggested in Stubbs's Exploring the Explanatory Power of Semitic and Egyptian in Uto-Aztecan and Changes in Languages from Nephi to Now. While such a suggestion is not novel, a linguistic connection between the New World and the Old World is especially appealing to readers of the Book of Mormon. Such a connection can potentially provide a way to determine specific cultural and social facts about the peoples and civilizations described throughout the Book of Mormon. …

"And He Was Anti-Christ": The Significance Of The Eighteenth Year Of The Reign Of The Judges, Part 2, Daniel Belnap Jan 2019

"And He Was Anti-Christ": The Significance Of The Eighteenth Year Of The Reign Of The Judges, Part 2, Daniel Belnap

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

For the Nephites, the sixteenth year of the reign of the judges was tremendously difficult. The arrival of the people of Ammon, in itself an incredible disruption of Nephite society, precipitated a battle, which Mormon describes as a "tremendous battle; yea, even such an one as never had been known among all the people in the land from the time Lehi left Jerusalem'' (Alma 28:2). The dead, we are told, were not counted due to their enormous number. These events compounded the pre-existing struggles that resulted from the sociopolitical fallout from the reforms of Mosiah. Though Alma 30:5 suggests that …

A New Brachineurini Genus And Two New Species(Diptera: Cecidomyiidae: Cecidomyiinae) From Yunnan, China, Ke-Long Jiao, Hao Wang, Wen-Jun Bu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A new free-living genus of the mycophagous tribe Brachineurini, Loborrhizomyia gen. nov., and its type species (Loborrhizomyia phaneroectata sp. nov.) and another new species (Loborrhizomyia aphanata sp. nov.) are described from the Caiyang River Nature Reserve, Pu?er, Yunnan, China. The new genus is characterized in the tribe Brachineurini by the unique gonostylus having a ventral lobe protruding to the distal. The taxonomic status of the new genus and two new species is discussed with a comparison between the other related groups and an updated key to all known Brachineurini genera including the new genus is provided.

Spatiotemporal Distribution And Population Structure Of Clibanarius Symmetricus (Randall, 1840) (Crustacea, Diogenidae) In An Amazon Estuary, Ana Carolina Melo Rodrigues, Jussara Moretto Martinelli-Lemos

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Rocky outcrops in the intertidal zones of estuaries often contain a highly diverse microbenthic community which includes the hermit crab, Clibanarius symmetricus, an abundant species on the equatorial Amazon coast. However, the ecology of this anomuran is poorly understood. Given this, the present study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution and structure of the C. symmetricus populations that inhabit the rocky outcrops of the Marapanim estuary in northern Brazil. Samples were collected monthly over a yearly cycle covering both the dry and rainy seasons in the upper and lower midlittoral zones during low tide. The distribution and abundance of C. symmetricus were …

Statutory Recognition Of Indigenous Custom Adoption: Its Role In Strengthening Self-Governance Over Child Welfare, Celeste Cuthbertson Jan 2019

Statutory Recognition Of Indigenous Custom Adoption: Its Role In Strengthening Self-Governance Over Child Welfare, Celeste Cuthbertson

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This article critically examines the statutory recognition of Indigenous custom adoption in Canada. Settler state recognition of custom adoption in each province and territory is discussed and the possibility of conflation between custom adoption and settler state adoption is highlighted. The author argues that statutory regimes have a role in strengthening Indigenous self-governance over child welfare so long as the conflation of diverse practices is rejected, and recognition is accompanied by control and support.

Insurance Coverage In A Climate Changed Canada: How Can Canada Pay For Loss And Damage From Anthropogenic Climate Change?, Eric Dwyer Jan 2019

Insurance Coverage In A Climate Changed Canada: How Can Canada Pay For Loss And Damage From Anthropogenic Climate Change?, Eric Dwyer

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This article looks at the impact of anthropogenic climate change and its associated costs in the Canadian context. It begins by outlining how climate change is predicted to alter the Canadian climate before evaluating how this will affect the insurance industry. It determines that insurers’ response to the unpredictable risks and high costs associated with climate change will lead to significant gaps in coverage. How litigation of major carbon polluters could help cover some of the costs associated with climate change by holding polluters accountable is considered. State-led climate litigation can overcome some of the litigation obstacles identified and it …

Finding Harmony: Law Society Of British Columbia V Trinity Western University, Sancho Mccann Jan 2019

Finding Harmony: Law Society Of British Columbia V Trinity Western University, Sancho Mccann

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This case comment focuses on what the Supreme Court of Canada’s 2018 decision in Law Society of British Columbia v Trinity Western University tells us about how courts should review the discretionary decisions of administrative decision-makers for compliance with the Charter. The majority describes this as an application of the framework from Doré and Loyola, and I argue that the Court missed a chance to bring that framework into conceptual harmony with that from Oakes. The Court should be reluctant to use the framework of reasonableness and deference set out in Doré and Loyola when the decision-maker (the Law Society …

The Quadrangulation Project: Reconciling International Modes Of Liability With Domestic Liability For Genocide, War Crimes, And Crimes Against Humanity, Chelsea Rubin

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Political ideology aside, Canada has been seen as a global leader in the ever-developing international criminal law project. Yet, this position, and the legitimacy that accompanies it, is increasingly under threat. As Prosecutor Bensouda of the International Criminal Court begins her investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity in Afghanistan, it is possible Canadians will fall within the scope of potential indictments. Herein lies the threat to Canada’s position. Canada was among the earliest states to adopt implementing legislation following its ratification of the Rome Statute of the ICC. Yet, efforts to prosecute war criminals domestically have lagged. Should …

Corrective Justice And The Unlawful Means Tort: Is There A Right To Trade?, Kerry Sun Jan 2019

Corrective Justice And The Unlawful Means Tort: Is There A Right To Trade?, Kerry Sun

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This paper investigates the extent to which the theory of corrective justice can account for the purpose, structure, and elements of the tort of unlawful interference with economic relations. It considers various proposed accounts of the tort, contending that the tort cannot be justified as an exception to the privity doctrine, a response to the defendant’s attempts to assert indirect control over the plaintiff, or a form of liability stretching. Extending a proposed account of the tort based on the theory of abuse of rights, this paper develops the idea of a “right to trade” that is founded on the …

The Power Of Prevention: The Extent Of Environmental Authority In The Context Of Local Government, Colleen Thrasher, Jeremy Power Jan 2019

The Power Of Prevention: The Extent Of Environmental Authority In The Context Of Local Government, Colleen Thrasher, Jeremy Power

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

This article attempts to delineate the scope of a municipality’s legal power within the realm of environmental management. Part one of this article looks at the legal position of a municipal government in the Canadian constitutional framework. The authors note that municipalities are creatures of statute and their available powers are tightly prescribed by legislation. Part two of this article is a case study of the City of Toronto's efforts to manage pollution in the Great Lake region, particularly with respect to Lake Ontario. Despite the limits to a municipality’s power, the authors argue that many effective pollution prevention strategies …

A School Divided: A Historicist Legal Analysis Of Good Spirit School Division No 204 V Christ Teacher Roman Catholic Separate School Division No 212, Edward (Ted) R. Lewis

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

On the cusp of a judgment by the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, this article examines the 2017 Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench decision in Good Spirit School Division No 204 v Christ the Teacher Roman Catholic Separate School Division No 212. In this case, the SKQB ruled that non-Catholic students attending a publicly funded Catholic school were not entitled to per-student funding grants administered by the provincial government. This article reviews the case using a historicist lens informed by the philosophy of Edmund Burke, which the author suggests is appropriate in the Canadian constitutional context. Through this constitutional lens, the …
