The Concept Album Continuum, Paige C. Sorensen Apr 2019

The Concept Album Continuum, Paige C. Sorensen

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

It is clear through the exploration of various one-dimensional definitions that a consensus has not yet been reached that encompasses the exhaustive and eclectic nature of the concept album, nor does it appear that one will develop in the near future. Therefore, I am offering an alternative approach to classify the concept album in a multi-dimensional manner that may solve issues of exclusion. Rather than attempting to provide a lengthy and fallible interpretation of the musical form, I propose that all concept albums be considered as part of a ‘concept album continuum’ that ranges from loose to strict.

The Augmented Drift, Kylie Miller Apr 2019

The Augmented Drift, Kylie Miller

Masters in Architecture Program: Theses

This thesis aims to define and understand the role in which technology plays on human perception and its relationship to architecture. This is to critically analyze the changes and manipulations of the body within regards to new technological systems. These are analyzed under the frameworks of body perceptual systems and their levels of engagement. This then allows for experimentation of sensory manipulation to test the body’s responsive and reactionary techniques.

The design of this thesis explores the opportunities in crossing, amplifying, and re-contextualizing the body and senses within the regards of the technological impacts. This is implored through physical prosthetic …

Thermal Degradation Of Chemical Warfare Agents Utilizing Pyrolyzed Cotton Balls, Bryan A. Lagasse, Mathhew S. Blais, Carlos D. Garcia Apr 2019

Thermal Degradation Of Chemical Warfare Agents Utilizing Pyrolyzed Cotton Balls, Bryan A. Lagasse, Mathhew S. Blais, Carlos D. Garcia

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Since the Chemical Warfare Convention (CWC) Treaty was established in 1997, it has been prohibited for countries to stockpile, produce, or use chemical warfare agents (CWAs). However, it can be assumed that not every country or group is in accordance with these regulations, and therefore a method to deactivate and destroy these agents is necessary for international security. Current methods for destroying chemical warfare agents have predominantly relied up hydrolysis, high pressure peroxides, or oxidation reactions utilizing bleaching agents. While these methods are effective, they require a large quantity of decontamination agents relative to the amount of CWA present and …

Avarice And Ambition In America: The Founders’ Debate On The Political Place Of The Selfish Passions In The Constitutional Order Of The United States, Jonathan W. Pidluzny, Murray S. Y. Besette

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Federalists and Anti-Federalists were different kinds of republicans insofar as they offered opposite solutions to the perennial problem of republican government. The Anti-Federalists hoped to minimize faction by cultivating piety, self-control, and patriotism in the citizenry. The Federalists rejected the traditional approach. Instead, they unleashed the selfish passions for the sake of economic and military strength. To mitigate the pernicious effects of faction along economic lines, they designed the constitutional order to channel elite ambition in service to the republic. They seem not to have foreseen, however, that in unleashing human greed they risked creating an environment that would corrupt …

Debugging The Tallinn Manual 2.0'S Application Of The Due Diligence Principle To Cyber Operations, Colin Patrick Apr 2019

Debugging The Tallinn Manual 2.0'S Application Of The Due Diligence Principle To Cyber Operations, Colin Patrick

Washington International Law Journal

As global cyber connectivity increases, so does opportunities for large-scale nefarious cyber operations. These novel circumstances have necessitated the application of old-world customs to an increasingly complex world. To meet this challenge, the Tallinn Manual 2.0 on the International Law Applicable to Cyber Operations was created. The Manual provides 154 black letter rules detailing how international law applies to cyber operations during peacetime. Of particular import is the Manual’s interpretation of the due diligence principle. This principle, which defines the contours of a state’s obligation to prevent their territory to inflict extraterritorial harm, is increasingly significant in light of the …

The Eagle’S Rise: Napoleon Bonaparte’S First Campaign And The Birth Of Napoleonic Warfare, Berke Gursoy Apr 2019

The Eagle’S Rise: Napoleon Bonaparte’S First Campaign And The Birth Of Napoleonic Warfare, Berke Gursoy

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Traditionally, the study of Napoleonic warfare has been approached through the lens of the massive battles of the French Empire and Emperor Napoleon, but little attention has been paid to those campaigns of General Bonaparte, specifically, on Napoleon’s first campaign, the Italian Campaign. This paper argues that the Italian campaign should be understood not only amongst Napoleon’s greatest but amongst history’s greatest demonstrations of the art of war. This thesis is advanced by an overview of the core elements of Napoleonic warfare and a demonstration of their implementation in Italy. Using both primary and secondary sources, this paper conducts an …

Rebuilding Resilience Of Rural Community Dwellers In Liberia Post-War: Case Study Of Nimba County In Liberia, Richard D. Agbaje Apr 2019

Rebuilding Resilience Of Rural Community Dwellers In Liberia Post-War: Case Study Of Nimba County In Liberia, Richard D. Agbaje

Capstone Collection

Since the end of the war in Liberia, post–conflict development agencies have spent tens of millions of dollars in Liberia on justice, governance, security and infrastructure. These social cohesion methods in the past were considered a way of stabilizing the peace process. Unfortunately, these methods listed above overlooked rural communities. And these rural communities are actually affected by the conflict more severely. Can development aid contribute to social cohesion after the Civil War by focusing only on urban areas when most rural communities continue to be neglected? Evidence from a field experiment in post-conflict Liberia has emerged with lack of …

Reexamining Amos’ Use Of Rhetorical Questions In Hebrew Prophetic Rhetoric, Matthew Bovard Apr 2019

Reexamining Amos’ Use Of Rhetorical Questions In Hebrew Prophetic Rhetoric, Matthew Bovard

Masters Theses

The book of Amos contains a message of repentance and judgment to eighth-century Israel. However, the book also portrays the Hebrew prophet persuading his audience of their condemnation before a God whom they do not fully understand. The prophet employs rhetorical questions to help assert his argument. Modern scholarship, however, does not address the function(s) of rhetorical questions from a purely Hebrew context, but evaluates them from an approach heavily influenced by Classical rhetoric. This error results in an incomplete view of Amos’ rhetoric and message that removes the rhetorical questions from the context of the Hebrew prophet. Thus, a …

Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Spanish Wines (And A Few Things You Did), John Phillips Wacker Apr 2019

Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Spanish Wines (And A Few Things You Did), John Phillips Wacker

Senior Theses

The Spanish wine scene is incredibly diverse, and an immense number of different wines are made in the country. Likewise, Spain is incredibly rich in culture, with a wide array of languages, histories, cultures, and cuisines found throughout the nation. The sheer number and variety of Spanish wines and the incredible variety of cultures found in Spain may be daunting to the uninitiated. Thus, a guide to Spanish wine and culture, which not only details the two but links them, as well, may prove very helpful to the Spanish wine newcomer or perhaps even a sommelier.

This thesis-guide was compiled …

China's Other Army: The People's Armed Police In An Era Of Reform, Joel Wuthnow Apr 2019

China's Other Army: The People's Armed Police In An Era Of Reform, Joel Wuthnow

China Strategic Perspectives

China’s premier paramilitary force—the People’s Armed Police (PAP)—is undergoing its most profound restructuring since its establishment in 1982.

  • Previously under dual civilian and military command, the PAP has been placed firmly under China’s military. As chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi Jinping now has direct control over all of China’s primary instruments of coercive power. This represents the highest degree of centralized control over China’s paramilitary forces since the Cultural Revolution.
  • Local and provincial officials have lost the ability to unilaterally deploy PAP units in the event of civil unrest or natural disasters, but can still request support through …

Steel Monsters: Soviet Tank Development During The Second World War, Jeremy Paugh Apr 2019

Steel Monsters: Soviet Tank Development During The Second World War, Jeremy Paugh

CUP Undergraduate Research

This thesis aims to explore the far-reaching effects of armored warfare and tank development on the outcome of the Eastern Front of the Second World War, where Nazi Germany and the United Soviet Socialist Republics fought an existential war that would decide the destiny of Eastern Europe. As such, this thesis provides background information on the Nazi ideology that opened this theater of the Second World War before delving into German tank development, examining several vehicles that had a significant impact on armored development in general as well as within the theater when these vehicles raged across the steppes of …

Noncombatant Immunity And The Ethics Of Blockade, Robert Mayer Apr 2019

Noncombatant Immunity And The Ethics Of Blockade, Robert Mayer

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper counters Michael Walzer’s argument against tight blockades. It shows that the interdiction of food shipments need not violate the principle of noncombatant immunity. Whether it is morally permissible to impose a strict blockade depends on the circumstances of the target state. The more self-sufficient a country is, the more acceptable it should be for a belligerent to cut the enemy’s external lines of supply. The Allied blockade of Germany during the First World War illustrates the argument. Fault in this case should be assigned to the German government for the loss of civilian lives.

Indonesia’S “Fresh Meat”: Lgbtq Activism Amid Political Homophobia And Transphobia, Catherine Cho Apr 2019

Indonesia’S “Fresh Meat”: Lgbtq Activism Amid Political Homophobia And Transphobia, Catherine Cho

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In 2016, Indonesia—the fourth most populous country in the world—received international attention for what the Human Rights Watch calls an LGBTQ “Crisis” (2016). Sparked by high ranking officials publicly declaring homophobic and transphobic sentiments, a wave of intolerance, fear, and hate disseminated throughout the country. Gender and sexual minorities became “fresh meat” for political players—government officials, military leaders, religious figures, and other social agents competed to take a stand against an “impeding” LGBTQ threat. These dialogues catalyzed into action as zealous anti-LGBTQ campaigns staked violence and discrimination against gender and sexual minorities across Indonesia.

The “Crisis of 2016” cannot be …

The 25th Anniversary Of South African Democracy: Exploring Perspectives Of 10 Stellenbosch Residents On Patriotism And National Pride, John Mitchell Apr 2019

The 25th Anniversary Of South African Democracy: Exploring Perspectives Of 10 Stellenbosch Residents On Patriotism And National Pride, John Mitchell

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and qualities of a South African patriotism in Stellenbosch. 25 years after the transition to democracy and an election in 2019, this study aims to develop a sense of national pride using a small sample size. The major question is how is that pride expressed? Is it using rhetoric from the post-1994 ANC nation-building projects? Or have those efforts lost salience in people’s lives?

To conduct this research, I used mainly a 'vox pop' style interview, meaning participants were chosen randomly to answer a short, 5-6 question survey about national …

Z4, A Slow Puncture: An Autoethnographic Exploration Of Language, Embodiment, And Meaning-Making, Charlotte Rose Samuels

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In my ISP, I explored language as it relates to the ways in which people living in Cato Manor make sense of HIV/AIDS in their community. With 7.1-7.2 million people living with HIV (PLWHIV) in South Africa, individuals across the country are either infected or affected by illness. KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), the province with the highest rate of HIV, is also the province that was surveyed with the disproportionately highest internal stigma rates for PLWHIV. High prevalence of HIV, particularly in KZN, calls for a constant contextualization of life in the presence of illness.

Throughout the world, metaphor and symbolism is …

In China's Vanguard Civilization: Is There Shelter For The Third World?, Tseggai Isaac Apr 2019

In China's Vanguard Civilization: Is There Shelter For The Third World?, Tseggai Isaac

Comparative Civilizations Review

This paper looks at China’s civilizational and modernization heritages. Its ancient civilization is described as the first phase of China’s civilization. In the first phase, China’s Civilization was stellar, and creative, possessing well–structured bureaucratic institutions with phenomenal capacities for artistic production and the advancement of high sciences. The second phase of China’s civilization reflects its current modernization, one inspired and operationalized by Marxism and Maoism. The earlier phase of China’s Civilization was aloof, benign, self-sufficient, reticent and reluctant to attract untoward global attention. This ancient civilization, rooted in the organic soil of China itself, was holistic, robust on its own …

Anglo-Spanish Trade And Diplomacy 1712-1742, Forrest La Jeunesse Apr 2019

Anglo-Spanish Trade And Diplomacy 1712-1742, Forrest La Jeunesse

Masters Theses

Between the War of Spanish succession till the war of Austrian succession, the British focus shifted from matters of the European Continent towards that of expanding its trade and its commercial empire. With the securing of an important treaty with France, the British were able to seek trading concessions from the Spanish, through diplomacy or war, in order to gain economic dominance in the West Indies. However, unequal and often conflicting interests between the two nations prevented desired expansion into the West Indies for the British, so they sought to exploit vague treaty terms and obligations in order to conduct …
