Grand Strategy Is Attrition: The Logic Of Integrating Various Forms Of Power In Conflict, Lukas Milevski Dr.
Grand Strategy Is Attrition: The Logic Of Integrating Various Forms Of Power In Conflict, Lukas Milevski Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
In this monograph, Dr. Lukas Milevski examines the logic of grand strategy in practice, defined by its most basic building block—combining military and non-military power in war. He lays out competing visions of how to define grand strategy and why the aforementioned building block is the most fundamental. The monograph establishes the essential logic of military power through annihilation and exhaustion or attrition as well as through control of the opponent’s freedom of action. This baseline understanding of strategic action and effect in war allows an exploration of how the utility and meaning of non-military instruments change between peacetime and …
Leadership Styles In Hollywood-Based War Movies: An Analysis For Motivating Young Leaders In Military Service, Subrato Kumar Kuri, Eric K. Kaufman
Leadership Styles In Hollywood-Based War Movies: An Analysis For Motivating Young Leaders In Military Service, Subrato Kumar Kuri, Eric K. Kaufman
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
Film has a huge impact on the human mind. The major aim of this paper is to highlight the style of leadership portrayed in academy award winning war films. This can help leadership educators to incorporate specific movies in their leadership courses, particularly those for military personnel. This may motivate the young military leaders for better performance in their roles. Most of the movies portray transformational, transactional, and authoritarian styles of leadership. Looking more closely, the movie heroes are presented as transformational, ethical, transactional, situational, follower-based, and servant leaders.

India’S Surgical Strikes: Response To Strategic Imperatives, Karthika Sasikumar
Faculty Publications
In September 2016, militants who were allegedly backed by Pakistan attacked an Indian Army camp in Uri. The government in New Delhi was facing important regional elections. It faced intense public pressure to muster a military response. Such a response, however, ran the risk of triggering a nuclear exchange. Ten days after the Uri attack, India reported that it had carried out ‘surgical strikes’ on terrorist training camps in Pakistan-controlled territory. The paper examines this specific episode in India–Pakistan deterrence dynamics, focusing on the nomenclature ‘surgical strikes’. The paper argues that the choice of the term itself is new and …

Perceived Partner Responsiveness, Sleep And Pain: A Dyadic Study Of Military-Connected Couples, Annamarie Sophia O'Neill
Perceived Partner Responsiveness, Sleep And Pain: A Dyadic Study Of Military-Connected Couples, Annamarie Sophia O'Neill
Dissertations and Theses
The health-promoting influence of high-quality, supportive close relationships has been extensively documented, yet the mechanisms of this effect are less well-understood. Leading researchers have galvanized the field to test particular relationship processes and the mediating psychological processes they facilitate to pinpoint how close relationships exert their salutary effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the intimacy process on health outcomes of sleep and pain and if this effect depends on the facilitation of psychological processes in a sample of veterans and spouses (collectively called military-connected couples; N=147). Sleep problems are highly prevalent among military-connected couples …
Who Is Like God? The Deer Hunter As Angelic Allegory, Nicholas J. Schaser
Who Is Like God? The Deer Hunter As Angelic Allegory, Nicholas J. Schaser
Journal of Religion & Film
Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter utilizes Christian contexts and biblical motifs in order to present an allegory in which Michael (Robert De Niro) represents an angelic being. While Michael displays powers that parallel those of biblical angels, his lack of religious reverence and divine self-perception lead to a metaphorical fall in Vietnam. Michael’s friend Nick (Christopher Walken) is also an allegorical symbol for imperiled humanity in need of salvation. When Michael is unable to rescue Nick from a Russian roulette table in Saigon, Cimino’s film emerges as a theological statement about the problem of human violence and the necessity for …

Terror, Insecurity, State Responsibility And Challenges: Yesterday And Today?, Marc G. Pufong
International Journal on Responsibility
The further from 9/11, the more vivid its scares remain in the collective conscience. This seems to justify perhaps what has become a persistent state of a global war on terror. A war which in turn has given rise to a persistent surge of violent extremists with resolve for a perpetual state of global warfare. Consequently, now more than before, there is everywhere a shared sense of insecurity and a parallel awareness of vulnerable statehood and state capacity. I argue in this article that the current state of affairs has serious implications for statehood, state responsibility, state obligation and state …
Responsibility For Peacemaking In The Context Of Structural Violence, Richard E. Rubenstein
Responsibility For Peacemaking In The Context Of Structural Violence, Richard E. Rubenstein
International Journal on Responsibility
“They cry Peace, Peace, but there is no peace.” Jeremiah’s complaint resounds loudly in a period in which many of the most intractable social conflicts are products not just of prejudice, malice, or misunderstanding, but also of the normal operations of structurally violent systems. This essay begins by outlining and modifying the theory of structural violence originally presented by Johan Galtung. It goes on to describe several types of conflict-generating systems, including the capitalist economy that produces crime and mass incarceration and the neo-empire that produces terrorism and the “war on terror.” Finally, it inquires into the responsibility of would-be …
Cyber: The Ultimate Political Weapon, Shafali Raj
Cyber: The Ultimate Political Weapon, Shafali Raj
Paideia
Cyber is one of the newest frontiers we face as a modern society. There are many unknowns when it comes to this intangible platform that has become shared globally. Political Science takes an interest in cyber because today it is used as a battle ground for attackers on the international scale. Our understanding of cyber warfare is still emerging, and much scholarship fails to discuss the usage of the United States’ use of such weapons. This paper goes beyond a discussion of coders and hackers leaking into government data and instead focuses on the evidence of cyber as a weapon …

Dipl 6181 Statecraft: Designing Foreign Policy, Ann Marie Murphy Phd
Diplomacy Syllabi
This course will introduce students to the study of statecraft: the design of strategies to achieve foreign policy goals; the choice of policy instruments within these strategies; and an assessment of their relative utility in achieving national objectives. This class begins by exploring key theoretical underpinnings of statecraft such as bargaining, power, threats, promises and cost/benefit analysis. It then examines different tools of statecraft, including strategic bombing, economic sanctions, foreign aid and trade, targeted killings, and propaganda. The course analyzes the objectives typically associated with each policy tool, the conditions under which they are most likely to be effective in …

The Rebel Made Me Do It: Mascots, Race, And The Lost Cause, Patrick Smith
The Rebel Made Me Do It: Mascots, Race, And The Lost Cause, Patrick Smith
Dissertations
Public memory is commonly tied to street names, toponyms, and monuments because they are interacted with daily and are often directly associated with race, class, and regimes of power. Mascots are not thought of in the same manner although they are present as part of everyday life. The childish or sometimes comedic nature of the mascot discounts it from many considerations of its influence, symbolism and history. Nonetheless this research focuses on the term “Rebel” as a secondary school mascot. The term possesses the trappings of race because the American vernacular ties the word to the Confederate States of America …
Presidential Factfinding, Shalev Roisman
Presidential Factfinding, Shalev Roisman
Vanderbilt Law Review
The modern President possesses enormous power. She can use military force abroad without congressional authorization, impose economic sanctions on foreign powers, or enter into trade agreements with foreign states. She can do all this on her own, with little constraint. Or so it seems. In reality, these important powers, along with numerous more mundane ones, are all contingent on the President first making certain factual determinations. For example, to use force abroad, the President must first determine that the use of force is in the "national interest," perhaps that it will preserve "regional stability" or protect American lives. To impose …

Yugoslav Revolutionary Legacy: Female Soldiers And Activists In Nation-Building And Cultural Memory, 1941-1989, Maja Antonić
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
While women are often excluded and/or portrayed as victims in the historical scholarship on war, this research builds on recent scholarship that shows women as active agents in warfare. I focus on Yugoslavia’s WWII Partizankas, female soldiers and activists, who held visible positions in the war effort, public consciousness and, later memory. Using gender as a category of analysis, my thesis explores Partizankas’ legacy and their contributions in the National Liberation Movement (NLM) in WWII (1941- 1945) and post-war nation building. I argue that the organizational framework of the Anti-Fascist Women’s Front (AWF) under the guidance of the Communist Party …

Dipl 3851/Core 3851 Religion, Law And War, Hossein Hafezian Phd
Diplomacy Syllabi
This course will examine wars of religion and religious views of war, focusing particularly on how religion has informed the international laws of war. We are living through an era fraught with religious warfare - wars animated by religious conflict and wars that use religious abuse as weapons to demoralize and subdue the enemy. The course will focus on three major religious traditions (primarily Judaism, Christianity and Islam) and set in dialogue their respective views of war, assess their contributions to the contemporary norms of war, and examine particular historical episodes of religious conflict notably the Crusades as well as …

The Impact Of Ngos On Human Rights Development: A Case Study, Amber Marin
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
This study is an exploratory case study of Chile, Indonesia and the Central African Republic to better understand the economic development of human rights. This thesis will explore three hypotheses: (1) countries develop according to a similar hierarchy of needs as outlined by Abraham Maslow, (2) non-governmental organizations address the needs of a country the most effectively and efficiently because of their direct connection to communities, and (3) non-governmental organizations can utilize economic strategies to achieve their goals. The definition of economic strategies.

What Does Special Forces Usage Demonstrate About Us Foreign Policy Goals?, Jack Hopkins
Paideia
This research paper focuses on the interrelatedness between the deployment of US Special Forces, in both combat and supporting capabilities, and the accomplishment of US foreign policy goals around the world. Using a qualitative methodology, this paper uses primary sources such as reports from Special Operations Forces commanders, CRS reports, and other forms of Congressional documentation to investigate the relationship. This paper will use three case studies to illustrate specific foreign policy goals: firstly, counter-narcotics operations in Columbia; secondly, counter-terror operations throughout the Middle East; and finally, counter-terror operations throughout the African continent. The implications of this paper indicate that …
