Saruman As ‘Sophist’ Or Sophist Foil? Tolkien’S Wizards And The Ethics Of Persuasion, Chad Chisholm Apr 2019

Saruman As ‘Sophist’ Or Sophist Foil? Tolkien’S Wizards And The Ethics Of Persuasion, Chad Chisholm

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Persuasive speaking is an important part of J.R.R. Tolkien's fiction, and the wizards Gandalf and Saruman are often the most skilled orators and speakers in the Middle-earth stories. Literary critics and Tolkien scholars (including the author in his prior publications) have spent much time discussing how the oratory of the wizards helps to advance the narrative action within the stories as well as add depth to the wizards themselves and the other characters. Many critics describe the speech of Saruman as 'sophistry,' but does the white wizard really personify the rhetoric of the historical Sophists? The author explores this question, …

Whistleblowing In The Irish Military: The Cost Of Exposing Bullying And Sexual Harassment, John Hogan, Sharon Feeney, Grace Flynn Apr 2019

Whistleblowing In The Irish Military: The Cost Of Exposing Bullying And Sexual Harassment, John Hogan, Sharon Feeney, Grace Flynn

Articles

Whistleblowing has gained increasing media attention over the past 40 years, as incidents of abuse and wrongdoing associated with businesses, religious institutions, the media and politics have come to light. In this article, we investigate the consequences of a military whistleblower’s actions for both himself and the military institution that he was a part of. The case concerns former army officer Dr. Tom Clonan and his findings concerning the bullying and sexual harassment of female personnel in the Irish Defence Forces at the turn of the century. As these revelations came to light over 17 years ago we are able …

Re-Thinking The Weird (In The) West: Multi-Ethnic Literatures And The Southwest, Jana M. Koehler Apr 2019

Re-Thinking The Weird (In The) West: Multi-Ethnic Literatures And The Southwest, Jana M. Koehler

English Language and Literature ETDs

My dissertation examines the genre of weird fiction, specifically texts that engage the concept of the Weird West. While authors such as Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft are often seen as the founders of this genre, I argue that ethnic and women writers, such as Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Ishmael Reed, Leslie Marmon Silko, Lucha Corpi, and others, explore the hidden histories of the West and Southwest in ways that incite a rethinking of the weird. Most importantly, I seek to demonstrate how the weird is not only a literary genre but a literary aesthetic and methodology that women and …

The Case Of The Religious Gay Blood Donor, Brian Soucek Apr 2019

The Case Of The Religious Gay Blood Donor, Brian Soucek

William & Mary Law Review

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prohibits sexually active gay men from donating blood. This Article envisions an original legal challenge to that rule: not the predictable equal protection suit, but a religious freedom claim brought by a gay man who wants to give blood as an act of charity. Because the FDA’s regulations substantially burden his exercise of religion—requiring a year of celibacy as its price—the FDA would be forced to show that its policy is the least restrictive means of preventing HIV transmission through the blood supply. Developments in testing technology and the experience of other countries suggest …

Water Walking As A New Mode Of Free Surface Skipping, Randy Craig Hurd, Jesse Belden, Allan F. Bower, Sean Holekamp, Michael A. Jandron, Tadd T. Truscott Apr 2019

Water Walking As A New Mode Of Free Surface Skipping, Randy Craig Hurd, Jesse Belden, Allan F. Bower, Sean Holekamp, Michael A. Jandron, Tadd T. Truscott

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Deformable elastomeric spheres are evaluated experimentally as they skip multiple times over a lake surface. Some spheres are embedded with small inertial measurement units to measure the acceleration experienced during water surface impact. A model for multiple impact events shows good agreement between measured acceleration, number of skipping events and distanced traveled. The experiment reveals a new mode of skipping, “water walking”, which is observed for relatively soft spheres impacting at low impact angles. The mode occurs when the sphere gains significant angular velocity over the first several impacts, causing the sphere to maintain a deformed, oblong shape. The behavior …

Foreign Fighters: Examining How Foreign Fighters Will Become A Greater Threat To Europe If Fighters Are Left In Former Isil Territories, Joshua Pickett Apr 2019

Foreign Fighters: Examining How Foreign Fighters Will Become A Greater Threat To Europe If Fighters Are Left In Former Isil Territories, Joshua Pickett

European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium

This paper will explore the challenges presented by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, (ISIL) and, in particular, the return of foreign fighters to their home countries within Europe. The main question is whether these returning fighters still present a threat to Europe and how member states can cope with this situation. The transition between their presence to the battle ground and an ordinary life is a parameter that needs to be studied, as well as the role of their families and their direct environment. At the end, I will propose some policy recommendations that the European Union …

Supranational Or Compartmental: Applying The Question Of European Union Identity To The Topic Of Disinformation, Eric Myhre Apr 2019

Supranational Or Compartmental: Applying The Question Of European Union Identity To The Topic Of Disinformation, Eric Myhre

European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium

The proliferation of disinformation is not a new phenomenon. However, the increasingly interconnected nature of the global environment means that disinformation is more effective now than ever before. Western societies are simultaneously experiencing a growing political stratification and third-party intervention in their respective democratic processes and institutions. State actors have utilized social media, hybrid warfare tactics, and automated disinformation tools to exacerbate divisions in society. Therefore, it is crucial that such societies develop sufficient capabilities to proportionately counter third-party interventionism. This paper aims to examine the relative counterdisinformation measures taken by the European Union (EU) in order to draw comparisons …

Analyzing The Concept Of Human Security And R2p As A Part Of Eu Foreign Policy., Chelsea Jones Apr 2019

Analyzing The Concept Of Human Security And R2p As A Part Of Eu Foreign Policy., Chelsea Jones

European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium

The traditional notion of security has changed significantly since the end of the Cold War. We now live in a world where war is no longer being fought primarily against nations but within nations. The concept of human security put forward by the United Nations is viewed through the lens of the individual rather than the state. By having a right to the “freedom from fear” and “freedom from want”, this paper examines how EU foreign and defense policies have evolved since human security and the Responsibility to Protect have emerged. This paper analyzes both concepts against the five main …

Musical And Social Trends In Twentieth-Century Colombia, Miranda Rojas Apr 2019

Musical And Social Trends In Twentieth-Century Colombia, Miranda Rojas

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

There has been only limited research into the musics of Latin America as a whole, and the amount of musicological investigation decreases when referring to any specific country. This presentation will provide a glimpse into the rich and diverse musical output of Colombian composers in the twentieth century. It begins with a brief overview of Latin American society and Colombian musical influences and social structures. Important Colombian composers such as Guillermo Uribe Holguín are discussed, as well as general trends in classical composition at the time. The musical output in Colombia is astounding and at least rivals, if not surpasses, …

Mathematical Modeling: Lanchester Equations And The Zombie Apocalypse, Hailey Bauer Apr 2019

Mathematical Modeling: Lanchester Equations And The Zombie Apocalypse, Hailey Bauer

Student Scholar Showcase

Mathematical models are systems using mathematical concepts to explain various problems. Mathematical models examine realistic issues such as the different outcomes of wars and fictional problems such as the upcoming zombie apocalypse. The original predictor models of warfare were the Lanchester models, while the zombie apocalypse is a fictional expansion upon mathematical models for infectious diseases. In this paper, we examined and compared the basic versions of these dynamic models by analyzing each model’s set of variables, assumptions, and objectives. The basic versions of the Lanchester equations are the area aimed model and the aimed fire model. While the zombie …

"Get Tough!": A Case Study On The Development Of The Sport Ethic In Youth Lacrosse, Ross Budziszewski Apr 2019

"Get Tough!": A Case Study On The Development Of The Sport Ethic In Youth Lacrosse, Ross Budziszewski

Student Research Symposium

While participation in youth sport is often linked with positive psychosocial and physical outcomes (Holt et al., 2017), this context can also cultivate ideals that lead to the development of unethical beliefs and unsafe sport practices (Al-Yaarbi & Kavussanu, 2017). The sport ethic is described as the deviant overconformity by an athlete to fit societal expectations of a sport's high-performance culture (Hughes & Coakley, 1991). Strong beliefs in the sport ethic can lead to moral disengagement, antisocial behavior, and treating sport like warfare (Shields, Funk, & Bredemeier, 2015). Although the sport ethic has been widely studied in competitive adult sport, …

Gone With The Wind And The Lost Cause, Caitlin Hall Apr 2019

Gone With The Wind And The Lost Cause, Caitlin Hall

Honors College Theses

Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind is usually considered a sympathetic portrayal of the suffering and deprivation endured by Southerners during the Civil War. I argue the opposite, that Mitchell is subverting the Southern Myth of the Lost Cause, exposing it as hollow and ultimately self-defeating.

The Cold War And The Discipline Of Negotiation, Bazil Cunningham Apr 2019

The Cold War And The Discipline Of Negotiation, Bazil Cunningham

Global Tides

The Cold War period is perhaps one of the most tumultuous periods in modern history apart from the calamity of World War I and World War II. The juxtaposition of two world superpowers and the proliferation of nuclear arms resulted in extreme tension, uncertainty, and fear during the Cold War era. Although nuclear warfare was averted, experts all unanimously agree that the world barely escaped unscathed. This paper will provide detail surrounding the history of the Cold World Era, an in-depth discussion regarding the application of Negotiation theory to this conflict, and any conclusions that can be drawn. The synthesis …

Dilemma Between Definition And Morale: Were Korean Independence Fighters Under The Japanese Colonial Rule Terrorists? Case Studies Of The Korean Provisional Government And Kim Il-Sung’S Korean People’S Restoration Army, Uiheang Hur Apr 2019

Dilemma Between Definition And Morale: Were Korean Independence Fighters Under The Japanese Colonial Rule Terrorists? Case Studies Of The Korean Provisional Government And Kim Il-Sung’S Korean People’S Restoration Army, Uiheang Hur

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This paper concentrates on two specific Korean independence movements to analyze if they can be defined as terrorist groups. It is a very controversial and emotionally sensitive topic of discussion within South Korean society. The two selected groups are the Korean Provisional Government (KPG) and the Korean People’s Restoration Army. The historical context in which the two groups emerged will be explained in detail, since a clear historical context must be provided to help the reader achieve a good understanding of Korea’s unique historical setting. The two groups will then be analyzed in the light of political analyst Bruce Hoffman’s …

Reflections On The Matriarchs’ Orchard: An Alternative Understanding Of Jewish Women And Environmentalism, Arielle Aronoff

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Herbal medicine, native ecological design, and Judaism come together in a study that explores the links between women and natural healing. This presentation will focus on my experience as an intern at Kayam Farm, a Jewish Educational Farm in Reisterstown, Maryland. The history of the four Hebrew Matriarchs, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel and Leah, is steeped with trials and tribulations, celebrations and tradition. My internship allowed for me to explore this history and develop an herbal guide to the Matriarchs Orchard. The orchard has been planted as a space for women to celebrate the cycles of life. Our implementation of the …

Mistreatment Of Detainees In The War On Terror: How The Bush Administration’S Policies Have Violated International Law And Hurt America, Andrew Petracca Apr 2019

Mistreatment Of Detainees In The War On Terror: How The Bush Administration’S Policies Have Violated International Law And Hurt America, Andrew Petracca

Proceedings of GREAT Day

The mistreatment of prisoners in U.S. custody between September 11, 2001, and January 2009, including in- definite detentions, unfair trials, the use of interroga- tion techniques amounting to torture, and the deportation of prisoners to other countries for the purpose of torture, constitute violations of international law. Contrary to what the Bush administration and its supporters have argued, these policies are illegal and have not been more effective at protecting the United States than legal methods. In fact, by reducing the moral standing of the country and alienating individuals throughout the world, especially Muslims, they have strengthened anti-American extremism and …

Pacifying Hunter-Gatherers, Raymond B. Hames Apr 2019

Pacifying Hunter-Gatherers, Raymond B. Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

There is a well-entrenched schism on the frequency (how often), intensity (deaths per 100,000/year), and evolutionary significance of warfare among hunter-gatherers compared with large-scale societies. To simplify, Rousseauians argue that warfare among prehistoric and contemporary hunter-gatherers was nearly absent and, if present, was a late cultural invention. In contrast, so-called Hobbesians argue that violence was relatively common but variable among hunter-gatherers. To defend their views, Rousseauians resort to a variety of tactics to diminish the apparent frequency and intensity of hunter-gatherer warfare. These tactics include redefining war, censoring ethnographic accounts of warfare in comparative analyses, misconstruing archaeological evidence, and claiming …
