Contralto Marian Anderson As Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie Rocke
Contralto Marian Anderson As Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie Rocke
Doctoral Dissertations
Marian Anderson was an internationally-acclaimed contralto and goodwill ambassador for the United States government. In her role as a political asset, she utilized her talents to evoke a perception of the United States that differed from past assessments involving race relations. To provide an understanding of how she became an icon and asset to the State Department, three theoretical frameworks are applied—performativity, prototype, and social semiotics. In classical theories of performativity, classification separates us into categories and hierarchies, while concepts help us to categorize, understand, and predict the material world. Scholars have defined identity as a series of citational acts …
Voice Of America, Foy D. Kohler
Voice Of America, Foy D. Kohler
Naval War College Review
Now, in just plain physical terms, what is the Voice of America? I have had a lot of ladies ask me where our station is and things like that; apparently conceiving the Voice of America as a radio station comparable to their local radio station, but with a few strange characters around who are multilingual and can say the same thing in many different languages. Well it isn't that; it is a colossal radio operation. NBC and CBS combined are pretty small, as radio operations go, compared with what is, and particularly with what will be, the Voice of America.

Portraits Of A Camoufleur, Michael C. Guinto Ii
Theses
Portraits of a Camoufleur is a body of photographic work which features military veterans who have transitioned back and forth between the military and civilian world. The photographic sculptures serve as portraits created by stacking collected archive photographs together inside shadowbox frames. The photographs have also had camouflage patterns physically cut out of them which reveal more of the underlying images and experiences the veterans have provided. The work serves as a window into military experiences, attempting to close the gap that exists between military and civilian culture.

The World Trade Center 1993 Attack Vs. Osama Bin-Laden’S Fatwa As Causes Of The September 11, 2001 Terror Attack, Jessica Bland
Academic Festival
It is important to study the causes of the September 11 attacks because knowing the root cause of a problem is the best way to fix it. In this study, I will research the question: Was the 1993 World Trade Center bombing more or less of a cause of the September 11, 2001 attacks than Osama Bin-Laden’s fatwa, issued in 1998? I will be using the case study method to conduct this research by looking at previous research done on both topics and coming to a conclusion as to which event was a more major cause. This study is going …

Redrawing Borders In Africa: Norms And Exceptions, Andrew Kuntz
Redrawing Borders In Africa: Norms And Exceptions, Andrew Kuntz
Proceedings of GREAT Day
Stability is a central component in the operation of the international system. Reflecting its necessity, the principles of territorial integrity and state sovereignty are deeply engrained in international law. Secession challenges these tenets through the right to self-determination. However, the right to self-determination is not a generalized right to secede, and secession remains a rare occurrence. This has held uniquely true to Africa, where colonialism left a legacy of non-viable states and ripe conditions for secession, yet South Sudan and Eritrea have been the only cases in the half of a century since decolonization. Existing research on secession has primarily …

"The Most Forgotten Unit In The Most Forgotten Theatre Of That War:" A History Of The Mars Task Force In The Burma Theatre Of World War Ii, August 1944-October 1945, Matthew James Camina
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis discusses the significance of the (MTF) in Burma during World War II and how the MTF has been generally overlooked by historians. What little historical attention the Mars Task Force has received has frequently been brief and inaccurate. The Mars Task Force was a classified Long Range Penetration Force that trekked some 300 miles behind enemy-lines and went on the offensive in Burma to weaken the Japanese in their war with the Nationalists Chinese. This epic march was on foot, with mules, and supplied through airdrops. This thesis represents one of the few studies of the Mars Task …

The Trumpet Music Of Eric Nathan, David Wharton
The Trumpet Music Of Eric Nathan, David Wharton
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the trumpet works of composer Eric Nathan in terms of their technical and notational elements. This analysis develops an understanding of the musical vocabulary and techniques that will provide insight into the structure, style, and performance of this repertoire and in doing so to discover a historical perspective of the trumpet’s role within solo and chamber music genres in the 21st century. Through this analysis, I suggest that Nathan's music pushed the technical, and therefore expressive boundaries of the instrument. While not exhaustive, the analysis of Cantus, Four Sculptures, and Toying will …
Ending The Civil War And Consequences For Congress, Paul Finkelman, Donald R. Kennon
Ending The Civil War And Consequences For Congress, Paul Finkelman, Donald R. Kennon
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
The social changes and human and economic costs of the Civil War led to profound legal and constitutional developments after it ended, not least of which were the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments and the many laws devised to protect the civil rights of newly freed African Americans. These amendments and laws worked for a while, but they were ineffective or ineffectively enforced for more than a century.
In Ending the Civil War and the Consequences for Congress, contributors explore how the end of the war both continued the trauma of the conflict and enhanced the potential for the new birth …

The Arkansas Colored Auxiliary Council: Black Activism During World War I, 1917-1918, Crystal Gail Shurley
Theses and Dissertations
Before the United States entered World War I, President Wilson and Congress established the Council of National Defense, August 29, 1916. Each state formed a State Council that oversaw the structure and organization of smaller county councils, community councils, women's committee, and black auxiliary councils. Scholarship focused on Arkansas State Council of Defense (ASCD) is scarce, but scholarship on Colored Auxiliary Council of Defense (CACD) for Arkansas is virtually nonexistent. This digital history project, titled The Arkansas Colored Auxiliary Council: Black Activism during World War I, 1917-1918, explores the history of CACD, its formation, individuals involved, and some of its …
Euromodernity's Undertone: On Reconceptualizing Political Speech, Derefe Chevannes
Euromodernity's Undertone: On Reconceptualizing Political Speech, Derefe Chevannes
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation contends speech is indispensable to politics. It begins with Aristotle, whose conception of political speech grounds our modern understanding. I argue the Aristotelian position is colonizing insofar as it essentializes speech as sound. The consequence is that speech becomes phonocentric, privileging a particular mode of communication. This raises the issue of Deaf subjects who engage politics in non-phonocentric ways. That is, their speech is seen in what I contend is a visual vernacular. Subsequently, I turn to the issue of race. If Deaf subjects raise questions about what it means to speak, Black subjects, who speak audibly and …
Robbing The Cradle Of Civilization: The Effects Of Warfare On Iraqi Archaeology, Carmedy West
Robbing The Cradle Of Civilization: The Effects Of Warfare On Iraqi Archaeology, Carmedy West
Proceedings of GREAT Day
In 2003, United States forces invaded Iraq, adding further complications to an already troubled archaeological scene. However, studies in Iraq have been significantly under fire since the Gulf War in 1990 and the frequency at which sites are destroyed or looted makes progress and preservation difficult. Given the extreme cultural importance of Iraqi archaeology to its own nation and to world society, how does this affect our own histories and what should we do to protect it? By studying the effects of war and looting on the National Museum of Baghdad as well as important sites such as Ur, Eridu, …

This is an essay about coming to terms with the fact that your parents are never really who you think they are. This is an essay about coming to terms with why your parents are who they are. This is an essay about coming to terms with your parents in general. This is an essay about refusing terms, like a nihilistic psychoanalyst. It is not a self-help guide, and it certainly is not a how-to. It is photos pinned to a clothes line, it is a terrarium not fully formed. It is what had to be said, and done.

Medicine Infected By Politics: The American Occupation Of Haiti, 1915-1934, Cooper Scherr
Medicine Infected By Politics: The American Occupation Of Haiti, 1915-1934, Cooper Scherr
Helene Lafrance Library Undergraduate Research Award
This article discusses the impact that politics and social beliefs have on the humanitarian goals of medicine, using the American occupation of Haiti (1915-1934) as a backdrop. First, the article explains how the United States intervened in Haiti in order to maintain its political hegemony in the Caribbean, develop Haiti as a new market for American investors, and civilize the supposedly "backwards" Haiti. Previously, historians have recognized the important role that medicine played during the occupation, but this article highlights how U.S. political, economic, and cultural motives distorted the practice of medicine in Haiti. For instance, from 1915-1922, the Americans …
Taxonomy And The History Of Science: A Critical Analysis Of Four Historic Publications, Christopher M. Rogers
Taxonomy And The History Of Science: A Critical Analysis Of Four Historic Publications, Christopher M. Rogers
KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses
The history of taxonomy is not usually taught in modern biology classes, but it is necessary to understand the history of classification and science as a whole in order to better understand the processes of classification and thinking that are commonly taught at the college level. Through the exploration of the difficulties of publishing, Linnaeus' Species Plantarum, and three pre-Linnaean works from Pliny the Elder, Nehemiah Grew, and Rembert Dodoens, I have found that the history of the sciences has been largely distorted. The distortion appears to be of many factors, including the replacement of ideas, censorship from scholarly …
Less-Than-Lethal Self Defense Device With An Acoustic Element, Anthony Taibi
Less-Than-Lethal Self Defense Device With An Acoustic Element, Anthony Taibi
KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses
This creative capstone project involves the conception, design, and creation of a less-than-lethal self defense device with an integrated sound board to control the acoustic element. Theoretically, this device is capable of deterring potential threats without causing any serious harm or any long-term damage. When starting this project, I was very focused on sonic warfare, and how to harness the power of ultrasonic and infrasonic sound waves to subdue to target; however, I concluded that using resonant frequencies to deter a human being is too dangerous, expensive, and can have negative effects for the user of the device if used …
In The Trenches: Marc Bloch, Robert Graves, And The Individual Experience Of French And British Soldiers During The First World War, Emily Beatty
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
By analyzing the memoirs of several different soldiers in the French and British armies during World War I, I will piece together the individual experience of the soldier. Focusing on three main soldiers, Marc Bloch, Henri Desagneaux, and Robert Graves, I will compare the differences between the French and British experiences in the war. Using secondary sources, I will show how these accounts align with scholarship on the individual experience during World War I.
What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha
What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
The word “frontier” brings to mind certain connotations. The American public might think of Davy Crockett and his trademark coonskin cap, or of what came to be known as the Indian Wars as Americans pushed farther and farther west, conquering the rivers, plains, and mountains that lay just beyond colonial reach. But what was a frontier fort really like at the turn of the 19th Century? This paper explores that question through the study of archaeological artifacts left behind by the inhabitants of Fort Steuben. The fort, constructed in 1787, in what is now Steubenville, Ohio, was home to early …
Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas
Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Solar Minimum cycles and historical events
The catastrophic events of the late Holocene Era followed a cyclical pattern of Solar Minimum activity and described by ancient people in literature. Ancient literature documenting catastrophe is often unclear with catastrophic events mixed between fantasy and non-fiction, and consigned to mythology.
This project will demonstrate that environmental cycles impacting ancient civilizations were a result of cyclical patterns of Solar Minimum activity. Cyclical solar activity is historically observable, with warm periods lasting 540 years and cool periods lasting 400 years. The significance of the Solar Minimum activity occurrence shows patterns of civilization rise and …

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY TO VOLUME I
RUSSIAN SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN
The Internet Research Agency (IRA) carried out the earliest Russian interference operations identified by the investigation–a social media campaign designed to provoke and amplify political and social discord in the United States. The IRA was based in St. Petersburg, Russia, and received funding from Russian oligarch Yevgeniy Prigozhin and companies he controlled. Priozhin is widely reported to have ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin [redacted]
In mid-2014, the IRA sent employees to the United States on an intelligence-gathering mission with instructions [redacted]

Cutting Through The Ranks: The Navy’S Forgotten Legacy, Cameron T. Sauers
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
The bearer of this sword was a member of a United States Navy that rapidly grew in power during the Civil War, increasing its enlistment 500% and developing the first ironclad ship. However, even as the Navy was in the midst of its transition, one thing remained in place: The U.S. Model 1852 Navy Officer’s Sword. The sword is still used in the Navy today, albeit for ceremonial purposes. Yet, for all that this sword symbolizes, very few scholars have given much attention to it or the sailors who used it in the Civil War. The common soldier has received …
