The Missing Archive Of Loss, Zeina G. Halabi
The Missing Archive Of Loss, Zeina G. Halabi
Regards
The article examines the power of visual archives and the implication of their absence on the work of mourning. It explores the photographic work of the Iranian artist Azadeh Akhlaghui, who retroactively assigned visual identities to the unrecorded death of prominent Iranian figures. The scenes of death, reconstructed in highly staged photographs, operate as the guardians of collective memory insofar as they enable the work of mourning – a process of reckoning with loss that ultimately frees the collectivity from enduring melancholia.

Changing Body And Society: A Speculative Examination Of Portraiture In Choucair’S Non-Representational Corpus, Kirsten Scheid
Changing Body And Society: A Speculative Examination Of Portraiture In Choucair’S Non-Representational Corpus, Kirsten Scheid
Regards
What ways do portraits relate people to aesthetic practices and social configurations when representational and individualizing assumptions that ensue from figurative art cannot be assumed? If social being is not given, an art act might be seen to affect primarily an artist’s relation to the possibility of subjectivity. The idea that the audience of an artwork includes the artist herself raises questions about her self-understanding and social being.
Building on my ethnographic research, I conduct a speculative examination of portraiture in relation to the career of Saloua Raouda Choucair towards founding a local art history. To conduct my review, I …

Regards
Chouchou is the nickname of Lebanese artist Hassan Alâ’ed-dine (1939-1975). Hassan founded the Lebanese National Theatre (1965-1975), the first daily theatre in Lebanon. This theatre produced, during a ten-year period, twenty-six comedic plays in which Chouchou played the main character. Who is Chouchou, though, and how did he turn into a star in the eyes of the Lebanese general public of theatre? Chouchou — with his strong Beiruti accent, a vortex of extravagant movements, a sensitive soul with a fragile heart, a conman with his distinct moustache — appropriated his own unique physical and speech mannerisms, which rendered him a …

Jean Chamoun is one of the main Lebanese documentary filmmakers. After taking part in the Palestinian Political Cinema in the seventies, he documented, with his wife, the Palestinian filmmaker Mai Masri, the main events of the Lebanese War, the resistance in South Lebanon in the eighties until the liberation of the South from Israeli occupation in 2000, and the 2006 war. In his work, Chamoun focused on the human being in his daily life and continuous struggle for dignity under the strain of history. His social and political documentaries, as well as his sole fiction drama – extremely popular but …

Starting from the filmed narrative of three characters — Abou Youssef, a homeless person found during the day at the Sanayeh public garden; a security person in charge of a crumbling building in the Grand Hotels’ sector; and Fatmeh, who squats in an abandoned property in the same sector — this article introduces us into the heartland of Beirut through the eyes of tramps and vagabonds. It is made up of narratives and counter-narratives built on elements of reality but that, in fact, speak of another dimension of reality where truth is no longer an issue. The stories are set …

Asia Cantate International Choral Festival 2018, Arwin Q. Tan Ph.D.
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Excerpt: Since 2012, selected choirs from all over the world, mostly from the Asia-Pacific region, converge every two years to participate in a friendly musical competition at the Asia Cantate International Choral Festival. They present a program carefully shaped by their respective conductors and prepared several months in advance, intending it to be performed excellently in front of a panel of highly esteemed international adjudicators and hoping to win the coveted grand prize, which is awarded to the best choir in the competition. The grand-prize winner is normally the choir that renders the most carefully and intelligently crafted program that …

Transforming Tradition In The Dance Drama Realizing Rama, 1997–2004: Documenting The Process Of “Inter-Creation” In An Asean Production, Nicanor G. Tiongson
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
This article seeks to illumine two aspects of the pioneering production Realizing Rama (1997-2004), a collaboration among artists from the ASEAN. First, it will describe and critique the process of inter-creation among traditional and modern artists that gave birth to a production style that was palpably Southeast Asian in tonality, movement, and visuality without being stereotyped as “ethnic.” Second, it will explicate and evaluate the participation of ASEAN artists in the production and the changes they underwent in the process of creating and performing the work. This study will show that the creation of Realizing Rama paralleled the initial realization …

Lazaro Francisco: The Making Of A National Artist, Soledad S. Reyes
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
This essay situates the novels of Lazaro Francisco against the concrete specificities of our history as a nation, from the American colonial regime to the postwar period. The study shows how deeply Francisco understood the concept of nationhood even as he constructed experiences of socio-economic bondage and a disastrous war that resonated with his Liwayway readers.

Ginggala: The Tai Yai’S Divine Gift Through Music And Dance, Maria Christine Muyco, Khanithep Pitupumnak
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
In this article, the authors look at the present-day Tai Yai who live within the city of Chiang Mai but whose roots could be traced back to the Mae Hong Son Province. They practice a music and dance form called the ginggala inside the compound of the wat (temple), and in the streets during the end of the Buddhist Lent. By looking at each element of the ginggala—the people involved, the instruments used, the costumes, religious ceremonies, and parades of present-day street performances—the article traces the ginggala back to a mythic creature, half-bird and half-human, who welcomed Buddha in the …

A Survey Of Theater In Metro Manila: Selected Productions, January–December 2018, Arturo Hilado
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Excerpt: Theatre continued to flourish in Metro Manila over 2018. What is remarkable in the scene this past year is the prominence of outstanding full-length productions of original Filipino material. These have of course been in evidence in previous years as well, but seldom have they so dominated the roster of quality stage output. Just as notable was that the output went beyond the traditional purveyors of Pilipino-language theatre, such as PETA and CCP’s Tanghalang Pilipino. Eye-opening was the number of theatre companies almost totally dedicated to putting on English-language works, which broke mold to stage ambitious high-quality Filipino works …

Bilibid Weeks: An Account Of Prison Theater In The Philippines, Ricardo G. Abad, Nicolo Ricardo Magno
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
For three years, the training company RolePlayers, Inc., worked with young male inmates at the Special Classes for Children in Conflict with the Law (SC-CCIL), a unit of the New Bilibid Prison, in two theater productions that were shown to the prison community and the external public. The first production, staged in 2016, was a devised piece called Tumbang Preso (Knock down the Prisoner); the second production, mounted in 2018, was the Pyramus–Tisbe scene from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in Filipino translation. The productions’ immediate impact, however, lies beyond the plays. For the young inmates, prison theater served …

Review Of Pandora's Box: A History Of The First World War, Ian A. Isherwood
Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications
Perhaps the gravest difficulty with any single volume book on the Great War is taming the war's complexities while still maintaining a degree of nuance and insight that goes beyond the temptation for simplification. Indeed, the war's scale itself makes this task even more unmanageable. How can an author possibly offer a nuanced treatment that takes into consideration a war fought on three continents, not to mention, the political and social realities on the war's many home fronts and the changing dynamics of differing and complex societies under strain? To be comprehensive is an impossible task especially given the wealth …
