Student-Centered Active Learning Environment For Undergraduate Programs (Scale-Up): Effective Tool For Biology?, Melissa Rae Stotz Jan 2019

Student-Centered Active Learning Environment For Undergraduate Programs (Scale-Up): Effective Tool For Biology?, Melissa Rae Stotz

Education

The Student-Centered Active Learning Environment for Undergraduate Programs (SCALE-UP) method incorporates active learning pedagogies into space designed to facilitate effective active learning. Methods predominately used to demonstrate the effectiveness of active learning in STEM fields do not generally account for differences in student characteristics; furthermore, there is a lack of data sources that measure student-centered educational practices. This study examined the impact of SCALE-UP on student achievement in introductory biology, as evidenced by course grades. A regression framework was used to account for student characteristics. Course syllabi, classroom observation data, and an instructor interview were examined to gain deeper understanding …

The Design And Analysis Of A Microstrip Line Which Utilizes Capacitive Gaps And Magnetic Responsive Particles To Vary The Reactance Of The Surface Impedance, Jerika Dawn Cleveland Jan 2019

The Design And Analysis Of A Microstrip Line Which Utilizes Capacitive Gaps And Magnetic Responsive Particles To Vary The Reactance Of The Surface Impedance, Jerika Dawn Cleveland

Electrical and Computer Engineering

This thesis presents the work of using magnetic responsive particles as a method to manipulate the surface impedance reactance of a microstrip line containing uniform capacitive gaps and cavities containing the particles. In order to determine the transmission line’s surface impedances created by each gap and particle containing cavities, a sub-unit cell that centers the gap and cavities was used. Shown in simulation, the magnetic responsive particles can then be manipulated to increase or decrease the reactance of the surface impedance based on the strength of the magnetic field present. The sub-unit cell with the greatest reactance change was then …

I-Berlioz: Towards Interactive Computer-Aided Orchestration With Temporal Control, Er Miranda, A Antoine, J-M Celerier, M Desainte-Catherine

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This paper introduces i-Berlioz, a proof-of-concept interactive Computer Aided Orchestration (CAO) system that suggests combinations of musical instruments to produce timbres specified by the user by means of verbal descriptors. The system relies on machine learning for timbre classification and generative orchestration, and tools to write and execute interactive scenarios. The paper details the two main parts of i-Berlioz: its generative and exploratory engines, respectively, accompanied with examples. The authors discuss how i-Berlioz can aid the composition of musical form based on timbre.

Investigation Of Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm, Madhumitha Kakarlapudi Jan 2019

Investigation Of Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm, Madhumitha Kakarlapudi

Computer Science

The Strength Pareto Evaluation Algorithm (SPEA) (Zitzler and Thiele 1999) is one of the prominent technique for approximating the pareto-optimal set for the Multiple Objective Optimization (MOO) algorithm. The Strength Pareto Evaluation Algorithm 2 (SPEA2) is an improved version of SPEA that was introduced in the year 2001. SPEA2 in contrast to SPEA incorporates a fine-grained fitness assignment strategy, an improved archive truncation technique, and a density assessment procedure. In this paper, we studied the influence of the optimization ability of SPEA2 on different benchmark functions by evaluating different performance metrics. The benchmark functions used in the paper include 10 …

Enumeration Of Dense Modules In Networks, Yashwanth Goud Durgapathi

Computer Science

To analyze large networks in various research fields including biology, sociology, and web mining, detection of dense modules (a.k.a. clusters) is a crucial step. Though numerous methods have been proposed to this aim, they often lack mathematical rigor. Namely, there is no guarantee that all dense modules are detected. Here, a novel method for enumerating all dense modules is presented as well as a python program implementing this algorithm. Module detection plays a significant role in variety of modern systems to understand their functionality in depth for example in Biology. In Biology many data bases for the protein-protein interactions are …

̶D̶̶I̶̶S̶ Abled: A Salutogenic Approach To Design For The Enhancement Of The Ada Design Standards In The Built Environment For The Positive Impact On Mental Health Of Its Inhabitants, Amy Mueller Jan 2019

̶D̶̶I̶̶S̶ Abled: A Salutogenic Approach To Design For The Enhancement Of The Ada Design Standards In The Built Environment For The Positive Impact On Mental Health Of Its Inhabitants, Amy Mueller

Architecture Theses

Physical and mental health encompass the overall well-being of a person. However, people seem to immediately observe the physical health of others in society while the concept of “mental health” is left unspoken. The very foundation of the ADA Design Standards used by architects utilize guidelines for those with physical disabilities yet are missing the application of assisting those with mental illness. Consider a bottom-up approach of design that incorporates elements friendly to the psychological side of design. The overarching premise of this project emphasizes that architecture can positively impact the mental health of people and how improved design standards …

Fast Predictive Maintenance In Industrial Internet Of Things (Iiot) With Deep Learning (Dl): A Review, T Rieger, S Regier, I Stengel, N Clarke

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Applying Deep Learning in the field of Industrial Internet of Things is a very active research field. The prediction of failures of machines and equipment in industrial environments before their possible occurrence is also a very popular topic, significantly because of its cost saving potential. Predictive Maintenance (PdM) applications can benefit from DL, especially because of the fact that high complex, non-linear and unlabeled (or partially labeled) data is the normal case. Especially with PdM applications being used in connected smart factories, low latency predictions are essential. Because of this real-time processing becomes more important. The aim of this paper …

Characterisation Of Fatigue Crack Growth Using Digital Image Correlation Measurements Of Plastic Ctod, Jm Vasco-Olmo, Fa Díaz, Fv Antunes, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) was measured using digital image correlation (DIC) and resolved into elastic and plastic CTOD components via an offset compliance technique. The plastic CTOD range gave a single linear correlation for fatigue crack growth rate at stress ratios of 0.1 and 0.6 in compact-tension (CT) specimens of Grade 2 titanium. A sensitivity analysis was performed to find the optimum position in the crack wake to make the CTOD measurements. The results are the first time (to the authors knowledge) that plastic CTOD has been found directly from experimentation and demonstrate that plastic CTOD is a useful …

Real-Time Path Planning In Constrained, Uncertain Environments, Randall Christensen, Robert C. Leishman Jan 2019

Real-Time Path Planning In Constrained, Uncertain Environments, Randall Christensen, Robert C. Leishman

Faculty Publications

A key enabler of autonomous vehicles is the ability to plan the path of the vehicle to accomplish mission objectives. To be robust to realistic environments, path planners must account for uncertainty in the trajectory of the vehicle as well as uncertainty in the location of obstacles. The uncertainty in the trajectory of the vehicle is a difficult quantity to estimate, and is influenced by coupling between the vehicle dynamics, guidance, navigation, and control system as well as any disturbances acting on the vehicle. Monte Carlo analysis is the conventional approach to determine vehicle dispersion, while accounting for the coupled …

Physical Foundations Of Biological Mentality, Kenneth Augustyn Jan 2019

Physical Foundations Of Biological Mentality, Kenneth Augustyn

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Dualism struggles to connect two layers: the conscious mind and the physical workings of matter. It ignores a vast middle layer between the two, a layer that is beneath consciousness yet above known physical law. This middle layer is trans-robotic mentality, a means discovered by Nature to transcend robotic mentality. This middle layer evolved over billions of years before consciousness emerged from it, assuming more and more functions critical to survival as species evolved. Consciousness eventually emerged from trans-robotic mentality (not from robotic mentality), first intermittently then later more-or-less continuously. But there is no direct link between consciousness and matter. …

Laser-Induced Plasma Analysis For Surrogate Nuclear Debris, Michael B. Shattan, John Auxier, A. C. Stowe, Christian G. Parigger Jan 2019

Laser-Induced Plasma Analysis For Surrogate Nuclear Debris, Michael B. Shattan, John Auxier, A. C. Stowe, Christian G. Parigger

Faculty Publications

This work identifies analytical lines in laser-induced plasma for chemical analyses of major elements found in surrogate nuclear debris. These lines are evaluated for interferences and signal strength to insure they would be useful to measure relative concentrations. Compact, portable instruments are employed and can be included as part of a mobile nuclear forensics laboratory for field screening of nuclear debris and contamination. The average plasma temperature is measured using the well-established Boltzmann plot technique, and plasma's average electron density is determined using empirical formulae based on Stark broadening of the H-alpha line. These measurements suggest existence of partial local …

Decentralized Hamiltonian Control Of Multi-Der Isolated Microgrids With Meshed Topology, Mohamed Toub, Rush Robinett, Mohamed Maaroufi, Ghassane Aniba Jan 2019

Decentralized Hamiltonian Control Of Multi-Der Isolated Microgrids With Meshed Topology, Mohamed Toub, Rush Robinett, Mohamed Maaroufi, Ghassane Aniba

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The new electricity grid of the future, smart grid, can be seen as the interconnection of multiple microgrids. These microgrids are usually composed of distributed energy resources (DERs) that connect to each other in different topologies. Therefore, the modeling and control of meshed microgrids are requisite. This paper presents a mathematical approach for the modeling and decentralized control of multi-DER isolated microgrids (ImGs) with a meshed topology. Based on the advanced control scheme: Hamiltonian surface shaping and power flow control (HSSPFC), decentralized controllers are designed independently using only local information. These controllers regulate the voltage at the point of common …
