Citizenship status is often discussed in terms of both its benefits and its obligations. A recently enacted federal statute ("the FAST Act"), which denies U.S. passports to certain citizens who owe significant unpaid taxes, provides an opportunity to examine the linkage between citizenship benefits and obligations. In particular, it raises the question under what circumstances, if any, should the benefits of citizenship be conditioned on compliance with the obligations of citizenship.

Canonical theories of law and economics predict that issuing firms in initial public offerings (IPOs) demand — and that competitive markets produce — a transaction structure that maximizes value to issuers. Yet, since 1980, corporate America has left approximately 19 cents of foregone proceeds on the table for every dollar it has raised in IPOs. The global agenda for gender equality recognizes unpaid domestic caregiving in the home as the largest barrier to gender equality. The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory study was to explore the social process of caregiving in fathers and identify the patterns that influence caregiving in fathers. Recruited from multiple community settings, thirty-five fathers participated in intensive interviews with the investigator. Guided by the Swanson’s (2013) Theory of Caring and using iterative categorization during data analysis, this study proposed the action-based Caregiving in Fathers Theory. The objective of the research presented in this thesis is to develop analysis and test procedures for the characterization of disbonding crack growth in a honeycomb (HC) core sandwich structure. Face sheet-to-core disbonding are of particular interest to aircraft certification authorities due to several in-service occurrences. Experimental investigation was initially focused on the mode I dominated Single Cantilever Beam (SCB) test method. This dissertation investigates how government affects stigmatization processes. This line of inquiry is important for two reasons. First, existing models of stigmatization leave government out of stigma processes, or only mention government as a sanctioning body that comes in after stigma processes are complete. Organizational theory research therefore underplays the extent to which government action can influence its citizens. Second, stigma research in public administration and government research is limited to examining how government can assist stigmatized groups, and not on how government affects stigma processes. Few studies on marine turtles focus on the variation in reproductive performance of individual females. I use a long-term nesting data set (1986 – 2018) of individual loggerheads including information on 1,854 individuals, of which 853 were seen nesting multiple times. During this time, emergence success has declined while the number of females nesting, and the number of nests deposited has increased. Declining emergence success can be linked to an increase in predation in most recent years; however, this does not fully explain the decline in emergence success over all years. Placental malaria infection, during which infected red blood cells sequester in the placenta, is a substantial cause of pregnancy-related complications in areas where malaria is endemic. Accumulation of infected red blood cells creates an inflammatory environment and induces an immune response that can be deleterious to the placenta. This response can cause complications that include low birth weight, which is a major risk factor for neonatal and infant death. Previous studies have indicated this species’ strong negative correlation with salinity, not typically found above 30 ppt. This study assessed the ability of V. vulnificus to become Viable But Nonculturable in response to elevated salinity (35 ppt) as well as investigated novel methods for confirming their entrance into this state. Louise Erdrich, an American Ojibwe, and Patricia Grace, a New Zealand Māori, incorporate code-switching, moving between languages, in their creative works. Rather than viewing language choice as an aside to cultural representation in fiction, codeswitching should be viewed as an integral part of the text because these writers attempt to rectify the oppression of their people by using code-switching as a tool of cultural and language survival that shifts power dynamics in response to settler colonization. This chapter evaluates the ethical issues that using cost-effectiveness considerations to set animal health priorities might present, and its conclusions are cautiously optimistic. While using cost-effectiveness calculations in animal health is not without ethical pitfalls, these calculations offer a pathway toward more rigorous priority-setting efforts that allow money spent on animal well-being to do more good. Although assessing quality of life for animals may be more challenging than in humans, implementing prioritization based on cost-effectiveness is less ethically fraught.

Until recently, the fight against sanctuary cities has largely focused on the federal government's efforts to defund states like California and cities like Chicago and New York for resisting federal immigration enforcement. Thus far, localities have mainly prevailed against this federal antisanctuary campaign, relying on federalism protections afforded by the Tenth Amendment's anticommandeering and anticoercion doctrines.
