Snfing Glucose To Pass Mitochondrial Dysfunction: The Role Of Two Sensory Protein Kinases In Metabolic Diseases, Kai Li Ong
Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondria is no longer viewed as merely a powerhouse of the cell. It is now apparentthat mitochondria play a central role in signaling, maintaining cellular homeostasis and cell fate.Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to many human diseases caused by cellular metabolicderegulation, such as obesity, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease, cardiovascular disease andcancer. Eukaryotic organisms have evolved an efficient way in sensing, communicating andresponding to cellular stress and regulating mitochondrial activity correspondingly through acomplex network of intercommunicating protein kinases and their downstream effectors. Thisdissertation focuses on the interplay of two of the master metabolic regulators in the cell: AMPKand PASK, and characterization of …

Simulation Of A Continuum Tumor Model Using Distributed Computing., Dylan A Goodin
Simulation Of A Continuum Tumor Model Using Distributed Computing., Dylan A Goodin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mathematical modeling aims to provide a theoretical framework for understanding tissue dynamics and for establishing treatment response for diseased tissues, such as tumors. Previously published continuum models have successfully represented idealized two-dimensional and three-dimensional tissue for short periods of time. A recently published continuum model of cancer increases model complexity and describes three-dimensional tissue that, due to the required complexity of the geometric multigrid solver, can only be feasibly applied to millimeter-scale simulations. Furthermore, the computational cost for such models has hindered their application in the laboratory and in the clinic. With computational demands greatly outpacing current openMP-based approaches on …

Complex History Of Codiversification And Host Switching Of A Newfound Soricid-Borne Orthohantavirus In North America, Schuyler W. Liphardt, Hae Ji Kang, Laurie J. Dizney, Luis A. Ruedas, Joseph A. Cook, Richard Yanagihara
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Orthohantaviruses are tightly linked to the ecology and evolutionary history of their mammalian hosts. We hypothesized that in regions with dramatic climate shifts throughout the Quaternary, orthohantavirus diversity and evolution are shaped by dynamic host responses to environmental change through processes such as host isolation, host switching, and reassortment. Jemez Springs virus (JMSV), an orthohantavirus harbored by the dusky shrew (Sorex monticola) and five close relatives distributed widely in western North America, was used to test this hypothesis. Total RNAs, extracted from liver or lung tissue from 164 shrews collected from western North America during 1983–2007, were analyzed for orthohantavirus …

Duplications In Corneous Beta Protein Genes And The Evolution Of Gecko Adhesion, Tony Gamble
Duplications In Corneous Beta Protein Genes And The Evolution Of Gecko Adhesion, Tony Gamble
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Corneous proteins are an important component of the tetrapod integument. Duplication and diversification of keratins and associated proteins are linked with the origin of most novel integumentary structures like mammalian hair, avian feathers, and scutes covering turtle shells. Accordingly, the loss of integumentary structures often coincides with the loss of genes encoding keratin and associated proteins. For example, many hair keratins in dolphins and whales have become pseudogenes. The adhesive setae of geckos and anoles are composed of both intermediate filament keratins (IF-keratins, formerly known as alpha-keratins) and corneous beta‐proteins (CBPs, formerly known as beta-keratins) and recent whole genome assemblies …
Evolution Of The Gekkotan Adhesive System: Does Digit Anatomy Point To One Or More Origins?, Anthony P. Russell, Tony Gamble
Evolution Of The Gekkotan Adhesive System: Does Digit Anatomy Point To One Or More Origins?, Anthony P. Russell, Tony Gamble
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Recently-developed, molecularly-based phylogenies of geckos have provided the basis for reassessing the number of times adhesive toe-pads have arisen within the Gekkota. At present both a single origin and multiple origin hypotheses prevail, each of which has consequences that relate to explanations about digit form and evolutionary transitions underlying the enormous variation in adhesive toe pad structure among extant, limbed geckos (pygopods lack pertinent features). These competing hypotheses result from mapping the distribution of toe pads onto a phylogenetic framework employing the simple binary expedient of whether such toe pads are present or absent. It is evident, however, that adhesive …
Effects Of Dry‐Season Irrigation On Leaf Physiology And Biomass Allocation In Tropical Lianas And Trees, Chris M. Smith-Martin, Carolina L. Bastos
Effects Of Dry‐Season Irrigation On Leaf Physiology And Biomass Allocation In Tropical Lianas And Trees, Chris M. Smith-Martin, Carolina L. Bastos
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Lianas are more abundant in seasonal forests than in wetter forests and are thought to perform better than trees when light is abundant and water is limited. We tested the hypothesis that lianas perform better than trees during seasonal drought using a common garden experiment with 12 taxonomically diverse species (six liana and six tree species) in 12 replicated plots. We irrigated six of the plots during the dry season for four years, while the remaining six control plots received only ambient rainfall. In year 5, we measured stem diameters for all individuals and harvested above‐ and belowground biomass for …
Moving Beyond Noninformative Priors: Why And How To Choose Weakly Informative Priors In Bayesian Analyses, Nathan P. Lemoine
Moving Beyond Noninformative Priors: Why And How To Choose Weakly Informative Priors In Bayesian Analyses, Nathan P. Lemoine
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Throughout the last two decades, Bayesian statistical methods have proliferated throughout ecology and evolution. Numerous previous references established both philosophical and computational guidelines for implementing Bayesian methods. However, protocols for incorporating prior information, the defining characteristic of Bayesian philosophy, are nearly nonexistent in the ecological literature. Here, I hope to encourage the use of weakly informative priors in ecology and evolution by providing a ‘consumer's guide’ to weakly informative priors. The first section outlines three reasons why ecologists should abandon noninformative priors: 1) common flat priors are not always noninformative, 2) noninformative priors provide the same result as simpler frequentist …

Gangliosides: Treatment Avenues In Neurodegenerative Disease., Pierre J. Magistretti, Fred H. Geisler, Jay S. Schneider, P. Andy Li, Hubert Fiumelli, Simonetta Sipione
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Gangliosides are cell membrane components, most abundantly in the central nervous system (CNS) where they exert among others neuro-protective and -restorative functions. Clinical development of ganglioside replacement therapy for several neurodegenerative diseases was impeded by the BSE crisis in Europe during the 1990s. Nowadays, gangliosides are produced bovine-free and new pre-clinical and clinical data justify a reevaluation of their therapeutic potential in neurodegenerative diseases. Clinical experience is greatest with monosialo-tetrahexosyl-ganglioside (GM1) in the treatment of stroke. Fourteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in overall >2,000 patients revealed no difference in survival, but consistently superior neurological outcomes vs. placebo. GM1 was shown …
Empirical Estimation Of Urban Life Cycle Using The Three Dimensional Lotka-Volterra Model, Minhaj Uddin Siddiqui, Shaista Alam
Empirical Estimation Of Urban Life Cycle Using The Three Dimensional Lotka-Volterra Model, Minhaj Uddin Siddiqui, Shaista Alam
Business Review
This paper addresses the issues of urban growth sustainability by emphasizing on urban life cycle dynamics and its determinants with respect to the issues of environmental quality. A number of qualitative models have been discussed in order to understand urban dynamics. This paper empirically estimates the parameters of the mathematical model by the interaction of urban population, urban rent and urban income in the framework of the three dimensional Lotka-Volterra model. Numerical simulations of international cities are divided into five categories. The results confirm the cyclic behavior of the three variables with little difference in significance level. The findings of …

Urban Greenway Vegetative Communities And Environmental Drivers In The Southeastern United States, Erika Y. Chin
Urban Greenway Vegetative Communities And Environmental Drivers In The Southeastern United States, Erika Y. Chin
Theses and Dissertations
Greenways serve as parks or non-motorized transportation routes for urban residents, but as greenspaces they also have the potential to enhance habitat quality and availability. This dissertation examined two aspects of urban greenways: the motivations for establishing greenways and the structure of vegetative communities found within them. Analysis of greenways plans revealed that the provision of natural resources and societal benefits are not promoted equally. In general, social and recreational functions are prioritized in greenway designs, while environmental benefits and services are expected to be inherently and equally possessed by all greenspaces and greenways. Consequently, specific conservation actions (e.g. habitat …

Integration Of Technology In The Chemistry Classroom And Laboratory, Barry J. Ryan
Integration Of Technology In The Chemistry Classroom And Laboratory, Barry J. Ryan
Books/Book Chapters/ Proceedings
The role of technology in the chemistry classroom and laboratory continues to evolve, with mainstream applications such as pre-lecture/laboratory resources being supplemented by technological innovations such as immersive reality. Although the range is vast, care must be taken to select appropriate and pedagogically aligned technologies to enable learning.
In this chapter a model for the appropriate selection and application of technology enabled learning in chemistry is developed and explored in the context of two case-studies. This model, LEAPTech, is based on ten years of personal experience, informed by evidence and underpinned by the scholarly literature. This model will serve as …
Application And Evaluation Of Full-Field Surrogate Models In Engineering Design Space Exploration, Christopher Murray Thelin
Application And Evaluation Of Full-Field Surrogate Models In Engineering Design Space Exploration, Christopher Murray Thelin
Theses and Dissertations
When designing an engineering part, better decisions are made by exploring the entire space of design variations. This design space exploration (DSE) may be accomplished manually or via optimization. In engineering, evaluating a design during DSE often consists of running expensive simulations, such as finite element analysis (FEA) in order to understand the structural response to design changes. The computational cost of these simulations can make thorough DSE infeasible, and only a relatively small subset of the designs are explored. Surrogate models have been used to make cheap predictions of certain simulation results. Commonly, these models only predict single values …
Visual Artifacts As A Mediating Factor In Collaborative Museum Design, Jacquelyn Claire Johnson
Visual Artifacts As A Mediating Factor In Collaborative Museum Design, Jacquelyn Claire Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The process of museum exhibit design includes a variety of activities, including collaboration on teams, consulting learning theories, following process models, brainstorming, performing evaluations, and using visuals. Although some articles mention these topics, very few provide specific details about these practices. This dissertation, which includes three articles, explores how design and visual communication occur in exhibit design. The first article examines how exhibit design teams function. The second article describes how they use visual representations to engage team members in ideation and concept development as they planned for new exhibits. This is based on the assumption that designers need to …

Commercial Surrogacy Is The Sale Of Children? An Argument That Commercial Surrogacy Does Not Violate International Treaties, Lily Johnson
Commercial Surrogacy Is The Sale Of Children? An Argument That Commercial Surrogacy Does Not Violate International Treaties, Lily Johnson
Washington International Law Journal
Rates of commercial surrogacy have risen with the proliferation of in vitro fertilization. The process is unique in allowing intending parents the opportunity to raise a child of their own genetic material even if they cannot procreate through their own bodies. However, commercial surrogacy has been abused and caused physical and legal problems for all parties involved. In an attempt to remedy the problems associated commercial surrogacy, some scholars and humanitarians claim commercial surrogacy is already illegal under an international treaty that bans the sale of children. These legal scholars and human rights advocates argue that commercial surrogacy is the …
Conceptualizing Indigenous Historical Justice Toward A Mutual Recognition With State In Taiwan, Awi Mona
Conceptualizing Indigenous Historical Justice Toward A Mutual Recognition With State In Taiwan, Awi Mona
Washington International Law Journal
Transitional justice has received considerable attention in recent years in Taiwan. Despite all this attention, transitional justice is an issue that remains incomplete without addressing justice for indigenous peoples. This paper aims to focus on the essential characteristics of indigenous justice against the successive alien regimes. Though the fact that the national apology to indigenous peoples may have broken new ground in the government’s relationship with indigenous peoples, the common understanding of transitional justice has caused significant bitterness and frustration for indigenous peoples. Until the core significance of indigenous justice is essentially resolved, the existing uncertainty about reconciliation with indigenous …

The Current State Of High School Female And Minority Self-Efficacy And Interest In Stem In Chatham County, Georgia, Sara Gremillion, Sarah Zingales, William Baird, Nia Hunter, Amy Durden, Sabrina Hessinger
Georgia Educational Researcher
With the growing demand for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) jobs in the U.S., the attainment of college degrees in these areas is of paramount importance. Both federal and state governments have established initiatives to grow the number of STEM degrees earned by women and racial minorities, as these groups graduate in STEM disciplines and work in STEM fields at a lower rate than that of their majority counterparts. The factors that can deter women and underrepresented minorities from pursuing STEM careers have been identified with one of the most prominent being low self-efficacy, or a reduced belief in …

Assessing The Relationship Between Flood Risk Perceptions And Adaptive Behaviors Of Households, Dontá Council
Assessing The Relationship Between Flood Risk Perceptions And Adaptive Behaviors Of Households, Dontá Council
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation research is to examine the multiple relationships that explain household adaptive behaviors to flooding, and if risk perceptions play a mediating role in these relationships. Given the shift in transferring risks from public flood risk governance structures to households, there is a renewed interest in promoting private adaptive behavior amongst households that are vulnerable to flood impacts. Currently, the literature purports that flood risk perceptions rarely account for the variance explained in statistical models that examine household adaptive behaviors. This study analyzed an integrated conceptual framework that explored the mediating role of risk perceptions. The …

A Design Of Inductive Coupling Wireless Power Transfer System For Electric Vehicle Applications, Sarika Reddy Daida
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This research focuses on the study of using an inductive-coupled Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) system for electric vehicle charging applications in Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) power networks. Implementing WPT in Electric Vehicles (EVs) can provide a convenient alternative charging option, versus static charging in a station that would take hours. Also, it can prevent the potential of electrocution hazards that might occur due to the usage of physical medium like wires in EV charging. Even though inductive coupling has been applied in some applications of WPT, it is still not efficient enough to transfer high power at the kilowatts level …

Heterotrophic Protists As Useful Models For Studying Microbial Food Webs In A Model Soil Ecosystem And The Universality Of Complex Unicellular Life, Andrew Robert Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
Heterotrophic protists, consisting largely of the Cercozoa, Amoebozoa, Ciliophora, Discoba and some Stramenopiles, are a poorly characterized component of life on Earth. They play an important ecological role in soil communities and provide key insights into the nature of one of life’s most enigmatic evolutionary transitions: the development of the complex unicell. Soil ecosystems are crucial to the functioning of global biogeochemical cycles (e.g. carbon and nitrogen) but are at risk of drastic change from anthropogenic climate change. Heterotrophic protists are the primary regulators of bacterial diversity in soils and as such play integral roles in biogeochemical cycling, nutrient mobilization, …
