School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

This writing serves as an introductory unit to waste management and reduction to be used in a high school urban environmental education classroom. The research question for this capstone was, does teaching environmental science through waste reduction and management in an urban classroom affect student engagement and connection? The research outlined in this paper explores and examines the concept of an urban classroom environment, the importance of teaching environmental science, and tools and materials to incorporate a unit on waste into an environmental science course. The paper goes on to explain the importance of educating students about the waste crisis …

A Reflective Approach To Building An Inclusive Classroom And School Community For Students In Special Education, Yama Moua Jul 2019

A Reflective Approach To Building An Inclusive Classroom And School Community For Students In Special Education, Yama Moua

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Teachers today have a responsibility to teach a wide range of learners in the general education classroom. Federal laws in the United States such as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) were implemented to ensure that all children are held to higher expectations and with appropriate services to learn in public schools. At the same time, researchers have demonstrated that a teacher’s experience, lack of support in the classroom and varied belief on inclusive education can impact the outcome of achieving inclusion. The purpose of this research is …

Introduction: Hypoparathyroidism is a rare complication of iron overload in patients with transfusion dependent β thalassemia major (β-TM). We aim to determine the prevalence of parathyroid dysfunction in patients with β-TM.
Methods:Diagnosed cases of transfusion dependent β-TM between 5 and 17 years of age were recruited from outpatient clinics of a non-profit organization in Karachi, Pakistan. Blood and urine samples were collected in fasting to determine Ca, P, Alb, Mg, Cr 25OHD and iPTH. Patients were grouped on the basis of upper and lower levels of Ca, 25OHD and iPTH for assessing parathyroid dysfunction into primary hypoparathyroidism [low calcium …

Survey Of Subalpine Understory Vascular Plant Communities In The Face Of Spruce Beetle Disturbance, Julia Sobczak Jul 2019

Survey Of Subalpine Understory Vascular Plant Communities In The Face Of Spruce Beetle Disturbance, Julia Sobczak

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Spruce beetles (Dendroctonus rufipennis) parasitize Engelmann spruce trees (Picea engelmannii) which grow in subalpine forests between 9,000 and 11,500 feet (2,743 to 3,505 meters). These beetles are endemic to Colorado and traditionally contribute to forest renewal and succession; however, warming annual temperatures have increased beetle populations and stressed subalpine trees making the latter susceptible to a greater severity of infection. We predicted that spruce beetle disturbance would increase the available sunlight and nutrients to surrounding understory vegetation, slowly increasing understory species diversity of the area. To test this, we surveyed understory vascular plants from forty-four plots in subalpine forests using …

© 2019 The Authors. Understanding soil systems is critical because they form the structural and nutritional foundation for plants and thus every terrestrial habitat and agricultural system. In this paper, we encourage increased use of mathematical models to drive forward understanding of interactions in soil ecological systems. We discuss several distinctive features of soil ecosystems and empirical studies of them. We explore some perceptions that have previously deterred more extensive use of models in soil ecology and some advances that have already been made using models to elucidate soil ecological interactions. We provide examples where mathematical models have been used …

Adversarial Deep Neural Networks Effectively Remove Nonlinear Batch Effects From Gene-Expression Data, Jonathan Bryan Dayton Jul 2019

Adversarial Deep Neural Networks Effectively Remove Nonlinear Batch Effects From Gene-Expression Data, Jonathan Bryan Dayton

Theses and Dissertations

Gene-expression profiling enables researchers to quantify transcription levels in cells, thus providing insight into functional mechanisms of diseases and other biological processes. However, because of the high dimensionality of these data and the sensitivity of measuring equipment, expression data often contains unwanted confounding effects that can skew analysis. For example, collecting data in multiple runs causes nontrivial differences in the data (known as batch effects), known covariates that are not of interest to the study may have strong effects, and there may be large systemic effects when integrating multiple expression datasets. Additionally, many of these confounding effects represent higher-order interactions …

Sex And Death On The Western Emigrant Trail: The Biology Of Three American Tragedies, Melvin L. Bashore Jul 2019

Sex And Death On The Western Emigrant Trail: The Biology Of Three American Tragedies, Melvin L. Bashore

BYU Studies

Who would be more likely to survive in a wilderness setting, beset by starvation and extreme cold? Women or men? Single individuals or families? Would age make a difference? In Sex and Death on the Western Emigrant Trail, Donald Grayson looks at who died and who lived in three mid-nineteenth-century emigrant groups. An emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of Washington, Grayson began looking at patterns of death in the Donner Party, publishing his findings in 1990 and 1993. Curious if those same patterns of death were manifest in another emigrant group, Grayson began looking at the 1856 …

The Trauma Informed School: Effects On Student Success, Emily Larson Jul 2019

The Trauma Informed School: Effects On Student Success, Emily Larson

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

There is a great need in schools today for school staff to be trauma informed. Many students are coming into the classroom after having dealt with traumatic experiences. Many people assume that the only trauma they are experiencing comes from abuse. However, that is not the case. Students are experiencing a variety of trauma in their lives such as death, neglect, community disasters and nation-wide disasters. All these factors change the way that children respond to others, their behaviors in the classroom and their academic success. Because of this trend, school staff are becoming trauma informed. Staff is trained to …

Ph Dependent Reversible Formation Of A Binuclear Ni2 Metal-Center Within A Peptide Scaffold, Breena C. Keegan, Daniel Ocampo, Jason M. Shearer Jul 2019

Ph Dependent Reversible Formation Of A Binuclear Ni2 Metal-Center Within A Peptide Scaffold, Breena C. Keegan, Daniel Ocampo, Jason M. Shearer

Chemistry Faculty Research

A disulfide-bridged peptide containing two Ni2+ binding sites based on the nickel superoxide dismutase protein, {Ni2(SODmds)} has been prepared. At physiological pH (7.4), it was found that the metal sites are mononuclear with a square planar NOS2 coordination environment with the two sulfur-based ligands derived from cysteinate residues, the nitrogen ligand derived from the amide backbone, and a water ligand. Furthermore, S K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicated that the two cysteinate sulfur atoms ligated to nickel are each protonated. Elevation of the pH to 9.6 results in the deprotonation of the cysteinate sulfur atoms, …

Elite Patent Law, Paul Gugliuzza Jul 2019

Elite Patent Law, Paul Gugliuzza

Faculty Scholarship

Over the last twenty years, one of the most significant developments in intellectual property law has been the dramatic increase in the number of patent cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. That same time period has also seen the emergence of a small, elite group of lawyers specializing not in any particular area of substantive law but in litigation before the Supreme Court. In recent empirical work, I linked the Court’s growing interest in patent law to the more frequent participation of elite Supreme Court lawyers in patent cases, particularly at the cert. stage. Among other things, I found …

How To Make A Weed: The Saga Of The Slender False Brome Invasion In The North American West And Lessons For The Future, Mitchell B. Cruzan Jul 2019

How To Make A Weed: The Saga Of The Slender False Brome Invasion In The North American West And Lessons For The Future, Mitchell B. Cruzan

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Historical herbarium collections and genetic analyses indicate that slender false brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum) was first introduced in test gardens in Oregon in the early 1900 s as part of the USDA’s plant introduction program. A small number of naturalized populations were established, but it was not until several decades later that this alien species became an aggressive invader. The Oregon invasive strains of false brome were generated as a consequence of mating among genetically divergent lineages. The resulting hybrid populations contained high levels of genetic variation that fueled the evolution of specific adaptations to the Pacific Northwest climate and ultimately …

Effects Of Dental Composite Resin Monomers On Dental Pulp Cells, Thomas R. Schneider, Roxan Hakami-Tafreshi, Alexandra Tomasino-Perez, Lobat Tayebi, Doug Lobner Jul 2019

Effects Of Dental Composite Resin Monomers On Dental Pulp Cells, Thomas R. Schneider, Roxan Hakami-Tafreshi, Alexandra Tomasino-Perez, Lobat Tayebi, Doug Lobner

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Methacrylate monomers found in many dental materials cause toxicity to dental pulp cells but the mechanism of the toxicity is poorly understood. We used cultured human dental pulp cells to test the effects of three commonly used monomers; bisphenol-A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA), urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA), and triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). The order of toxicity was Bis-GMA>UDMA>TEGDMA. The toxicity correlated inversely with cystine uptake, with TEGDMA stimulating uptake and BisGMA and UDMA inhibiting uptake. Bis-GMA and UDMA induced oxidative stress, while TEGDMA did not. Toxicity correlated poorly with glutathione levels, as all compounds decreased cellular glutathione. TEGDMA is less toxic than …

The Effects Of Class-Wide Function-Related Intervention Teams In Two Middle School Art Classrooms, Kimberly Davis Monson Jul 2019

The Effects Of Class-Wide Function-Related Intervention Teams In Two Middle School Art Classrooms, Kimberly Davis Monson

Theses and Dissertations

Classroom management is a common challenge in middle schools. Class-wide Function-Related Intervention Teams (CW-FIT) is a multi-tiered intervention designed to decrease problem behaviors at the classroom level (Wills et al., 2010). It is comprised of evidence-based practices such as teaching classroom expectations, increasing teacher praise, and using positive reinforcement in an interdependent group contingency. CW-FIT has shown promise in a variety of school settings, but it has not been tested in middle school art classrooms. This was initial investigation examining the effects of CW-FIT using a single-subject ABAB design in two middle school art classrooms. Results indicated that class on-task …

The Association Of Spirituality And Well-Being In South African And Ugandan Samples, Alicia Jane Doman Jul 2019

The Association Of Spirituality And Well-Being In South African And Ugandan Samples, Alicia Jane Doman

Theses and Dissertations

Literature has shown a correlation between spirituality and well-being, but this has not been thoroughly studied outside North America, with very few studies conducted in Africa. This study compared data from two sub-Saharan African nations, Uganda and South Africa, that differ markedly in terms of multiple factors that affect well-being, such as mortality rates and access to healthcare, as well as educational and personal growth opportunities. Survey data were collected using the measures of The Spiritual Involvement and Beliefs Scale and Ryff's Personal Well-Being Scale. There were four racial groups represented in the data: Black South Africans, Coloureds, White South …

Expression Of Multi-Domain Lytic Peptide Genes In Transgenic Plants For Disease Resistance, George Biliarski Jul 2019

Expression Of Multi-Domain Lytic Peptide Genes In Transgenic Plants For Disease Resistance, George Biliarski

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Four non-plant multi-domain lytic peptide genes coding for antimicrobial peptides were expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana plants and tested against three fungal pathogens: Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Rhizoctonia solani, and Pythium sp. Detached-leaf bioassay was performed for the transgenic plants carrying multi-domain lytic peptide constructs and compared with transgenic and wild type control plants. Symptom area of each leaf was measured with high precision using the Compu-Eye software and processed by SAS statistical package. The transgenic lines ORF13 and RSL1 showed substantial resistance to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum infection producing significantly smaller lesion areas compared to control plants. However, these lines were not …

BACKGROUND: Cleft palate (CP) is the second most common congenital birth defect; however, the relationship between CP-associated genes and epigenetic regulation remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the contribution of microRNAs (miRNAs) to cell proliferation and regulation of genes involved in CP development.

METHODS: In order to identify all genes for which mutations or association/linkage have been found in individuals with CP, we conducted a systematic literature search, followed by bioinformatics analyses for these genes. We validated the bioinformatics results experimentally by conducting cell proliferation assays and miRNA-gene regulatory analyses in cultured human palatal mesenchymal cells treated with …

Developing Resilience Through Local Food, Erika Coble

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Using resilience from the perspective of the two-book series on the subject by Brian Walker and David Salt, the following is an illustration of how the conventional food system, in the way its production is disconnected from the local environment and the people it serves, creates instability and uncertainty in that which we depend on for our survival. Following the discussion on the unstable nature of the industrial model and its impact on our well-being, is a portrait of an alternative approach for the cultivation of food based on people connected to the local ecosystem where in which fissures begin …

A Descriptive Study Of Variable Discretization And Cost-Sensitive Logistic Regression On Imbalanced Credit Data, Lili Zhang, Jennifer Priestley, Herman Ray, Soon Tan Jul 2019

A Descriptive Study Of Variable Discretization And Cost-Sensitive Logistic Regression On Imbalanced Credit Data, Lili Zhang, Jennifer Priestley, Herman Ray, Soon Tan

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

Training classification models on imbalanced data tends to result in bias towards the majority class. In this paper, we demonstrate how variable discretization and cost-sensitive logistic regression help mitigate this bias on an imbalanced credit scoring dataset, and further show the application of the variable discretization technique on the data from other domains, demonstrating its potential as a generic technique for classifying imbalanced data beyond credit scoring. The performance measurements include ROC curves, Area under ROC Curve (AUC), Type I Error, Type II Error, accuracy, and F1 score. The results show that proper variable discretization and cost-sensitive logistic regression with …

Polymer Stress Growth In Viscoelastic Fluids In Oscillating Extensional Flows With Applications To Micro-Organism Locomotion, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy Jul 2019

Polymer Stress Growth In Viscoelastic Fluids In Oscillating Extensional Flows With Applications To Micro-Organism Locomotion, Becca Thomases, Robert D. Guy

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Simulations of undulatory swimming in viscoelastic fluids with large amplitude gaits show concentration of polymer elastic stress at the tips of the swimmers. We use a series of related theoretical investigations to probe the origin of these concentrated stresses. First the polymer stress is computed analytically at a given oscillating extensional stagnation point in a viscoelastic fluid. The analysis identifies a Deborah number (De) dependent Weissenberg number (Wi) transition below which the stress is linear in Wi, and above which the stress grows exponentially in Wi. Next, stress and velocity are found from numerical simulations in an oscillating 4-roll mill …

Dimensions Of Social Support And Post-Stroke Depressive Symptoms In Saudi Arabia: A Mixed Methods Approach, Lisa Adnan Babkair Jul 2019

Dimensions Of Social Support And Post-Stroke Depressive Symptoms In Saudi Arabia: A Mixed Methods Approach, Lisa Adnan Babkair

Dissertations

Background: Stroke is the second-leading cause of death and a major cause of serious long-term disability worldwide. Approximately 15 million people who suffer a stroke each year are at risk of developing depression. Post-stroke depressive symptoms (PSDS) affect one-third of stroke survivors. The prevalence of PSDS ranges from 17%-63.3% in Saudi stroke survivors. Depression after stroke is underestimated and underdiagnosed in the Saudi population. Stroke survivors use social support as a coping mechanism and as a protective factor against the adverse effects of stroke outcomes. Although social support and PSDS studies separately applied both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, a …

Writing articles in a law review is different from writing an opinion in a newspaper or articles in other types of journals. Indonesian authors often fail to indicate the problems to be discussed, the proposed thesis statement or idea (claim), and the structure of the article. They also write too descriptive and employ very limited references. This paper aims to support the authors to find out important aspects in formulating a good legal article. For this reason, this paper explains that an article must contain the claim, and be novel, non-obvious, and useful. This paper also explains the importance of …
