Runge–Kutta–Gegenbauer Explicit Methods For Advection-Diffusion Problems, Stephen O'Sullivan Jul 2019

Runge–Kutta–Gegenbauer Explicit Methods For Advection-Diffusion Problems, Stephen O'Sullivan

Articles

In this paper, Runge-Kutta-Gegenbauer (RKG) stability polynomials of arbitrarily high order of accuracy are introduced in closed form. The stability domain of RKG polynomials extends in the the real direction with the square of polynomial degree, and in the imaginary direction as an increasing function of Gegenbauer parameter. Consequently, the polynomials are naturally suited to the construction of high order stabilized Runge-Kutta (SRK) explicit methods for systems of PDEs of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic type.

We present SRK methods composed of L ordered forward Euler stages, with complex-valued stepsizes derived from the roots of RKG stability polynomials of degree $L$. Internal stability …

A High Throughput Assay For The Detection Of Stimulator Of Interferon Genes (Sting) Agonists, Michael J. Ingling Jul 2019

A High Throughput Assay For The Detection Of Stimulator Of Interferon Genes (Sting) Agonists, Michael J. Ingling

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The innate immune system includes a menagerie of different cell types, each with a different role in the process of monitoring the body for invaders and presenting gathered debris (antigen) to the adaptive immune system. Somatic cells have intracellular receptors for the same purpose. Cancer cells, however, have avoided these methods of detection despite, in many cases, the tumor’s immunogenic traits. Immuno-oncology is a field dedicated to the immunological traits of tumors, more recently finding ways of instigating an immune response against tumors. In this regard, STING, a receptor of cyclic dinucleotides (CDN), has come to the forefront of immuno-oncology. …

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) is a potent cytokine involved in systemic inflammation and immune modulation. Signaling responses that involve TNF-α are context dependent and capable of stimulating pathways promoting both cell death and survival. TNF-α treatment has been investigated as part of a combined therapy for acute myeloid leukemia due to its modifying effects on all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) mediated differentiation into granulocytes. To investigate the interaction between cellular differentiation and TNF-α, we performed RNA-sequencing on two forms of the human HL-60/S4 promyelocytic leukemia cell line treated with TNF-α. The ATRA-differentiated granulocytic form of HL-60/S4 cells had an enhanced …

Characterization Of Human Dutpase, Shawna Marie Rotoli Jul 2019

Characterization Of Human Dutpase, Shawna Marie Rotoli

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Deoxyuridine nucleotidyl transferase (dUTPase) is an enzyme found in all organisms that have thymine as a component of DNA. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of dUTP to dUMP and pyrophosphate thus precluding the buildup of dUTP pools as well as providing the substrate, dUMP, for the de novo synthesis of thymidylate. In Homo sapiens, there are four isoforms: mitochondrial (mDut), nuclear (nDut), variant 3 and variant 4. This work is largely focused on nDut. Using structural and MS analyses of recombinant dUTPase constructs, an intermolecular disulfide bridge between cysteine-3 of each nDut monomer was discovered. It was found that these two …

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Presentations

With new national science education standards, we must understand how to prepare science teachers capable of advancing reform initiatives. In a 3-year longitudinal study we adopted a multi-method approach to investigate beginning science teachers’ instructional practices. We analyzed transcripts, observed science lessons, and documented weeks of lessons. Using this large dataset we posed research questions about the use of NGSS scientific practices in teachers’ science lessons (Project #1) and classroom diversity as it relates to teachers’ use of inquiry (Project #2). In order to expand our coding capability of science teaching data for use in our structural equation modelling efforts …

Task-Layer Multiplicity As A Measure Of Community Level Health, Phil Fraundorf Jul 2019

Task-Layer Multiplicity As A Measure Of Community Level Health, Phil Fraundorf

Physics Faculty Works

Te insights of many disciplines, and of commonsense, about individual-level well-being might be strengthened by a shif in focus to community-level well-being in a way that respects belief systems as well as the power of each individual. We start with the jargon of complex systems and the possibility that a small number of broken symmetries, marked by the edges of a hierarchical series of physical subsystem types, underlie the delicate correlation-based complexity of life on our planet’s surface. We show that an information-theory-inspired model of attention-focus on correlation layers, which looks in/out from the boundaries of skin, family, and culture, …

The Five Tribes Of Machine-Learning: A Brief Overview, Jens G. Pohl Jul 2019

The Five Tribes Of Machine-Learning: A Brief Overview, Jens G. Pohl

Architecture

This paper reviews recent advances in automated computer-based learning capabilities. It briefly describes and examines the strengths and weaknesses of the five principal algorithmic approaches to machine-learning, namely: connectionism; evolutionism; Bayesianism; analogism; and, symbolism. While each of these approaches can demonstrate some degree of learning, a learning capability that is comparable with human learning is still in its infancy and will likely require the combination of multiple algorithmic approaches. However, the current state reached in machine-learning suggests that Artificial General Intelligence and even Artificial Superintelligence may indeed be eventually feasible.

Infant Emotion Regulation With Mothers And Fathers: The Roles Of Infant Temperament And Parent Psychopathology, Ashley Quigley Jul 2019

Infant Emotion Regulation With Mothers And Fathers: The Roles Of Infant Temperament And Parent Psychopathology, Ashley Quigley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The ability to regulate emotions is a key part of infants’ social and emotional development, but this ability may differ due to different factors internal and external to the infant. The current study examined the association between infant temperament and parent psychopathology to predict emotion regulation strategies in a sample of 4-montholds using the diathesis-stress model (Monroe & Simons, 1991). Parent-report questionnaires were used to measure infant temperament (the Infant-Behavior Questionnaire-Revised, IBQ-R; Gartstein & Rothbart, 2003) and parental psychopathology (Inventory of Depression and Anxiety, IDAS; Watson et al., 2007). Infants’ use of parent-focused, attentional distraction, and self-soothing strategies were rated …

Tourism And African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Behavior In Zambezi National Park, Zimbabwe, Brigit Rooney Jul 2019

Tourism And African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Behavior In Zambezi National Park, Zimbabwe, Brigit Rooney

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As charismatic megafauna and a flagship species, African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are vital to the African tourist economy. Conversely, high levels of wildlife tourism can induce behavioral shifts that push desired animals into less frequented areas and disrupt natural behaviors. In order to examine this trade-off, tourism levels and African elephant behaviors were studied in Zambezi National Park (ZNP) near Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Over the course of 14 weeks, in-person observations and camera traps in ZNP were used to collect geographic, demographic, and behavioral data from elephant sightings. As a proxy for human presence, geo-locational data were collected for each …

Documenting Marine Mammal Behavior And Evaluating The Benefits And Consequences Of Viewing Marine Mammals In Southcentral Alaska, Lauren E. Mccaslin Jul 2019

Documenting Marine Mammal Behavior And Evaluating The Benefits And Consequences Of Viewing Marine Mammals In Southcentral Alaska, Lauren E. Mccaslin

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Marine mammals are in a precarious conservation position because of anthropogenic impacts and historic perceptions that they are a consumable commodity. In light of changing abiotic conditions, further evaluation is needed on the habitat use, behavior, and interactions among marine mammals. Conservation legislation has helped protect species, but the greatest ground swelling may be the advent of the commercial whale watching industry. The feeding grounds in Alaskan waters have made this area a prime tourism location, and these nutrient-rich waters have resulted in a confluence of marine mammal species, including the appealing and abundant humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) that may …

Preschool Self-Regulation: A Predictor Of School Readiness, Romin Emmanuel Geiger Jul 2019

Preschool Self-Regulation: A Predictor Of School Readiness, Romin Emmanuel Geiger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Substantial evidence from previous research has supported the idea that greater self-regulation in the form of “cool” self-regulation or executive functioning and “hot” self-regulation or effortful control is associated with higher academic achievement within the preschool years and school readiness in the kindergarten years (Anaya, 2016; Carlson, 2005). However, there are only a few studies that assess the prediction of school readiness through validated cool and hot self-regulation tasks (Carlson, 2005; Krain, Wilson, Arbuckle, Kastellanos, & Wilham, 2006; Rothbart, Ellis, Rueda, & Posner, 2003; Thompson & Giedd, 2000). There also few studies examining to what extent cool and hot-self-regulation tasks …

An Experimental Study On The Effects Of Pro-Anorexia Content On Eating Disorder Development, Skyler Green Jul 2019

An Experimental Study On The Effects Of Pro-Anorexia Content On Eating Disorder Development, Skyler Green

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Pro-anorexia content, or content that promotes the development and sustainment of eating disorders, is an important topic that has been understudied in the literature. Previous research has primary examined the content featured on pro-anorexia websites, but few researchers have conducted experimental studies examining the direct impact viewing pro-anorexia content has on individuals struggling with an eating disorder. The current study was an experimental study that exposed participants to three conditions: proanorexia content, pro-recovery content, and a control group. The researcher examined the impact that viewing the three levels of content for 10 minutes had on individuals who met criteria and …

An Urban Karst Aquifer Resource Evaluation And Monitoring Toolbox, Rachel Anne Kaiser Jul 2019

An Urban Karst Aquifer Resource Evaluation And Monitoring Toolbox, Rachel Anne Kaiser

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In urban karst areas, such as the City of Bowling Green, Kentucky and the Tampa Bay Metropolitan Area, groundwater quality faces a variety of threats. The development of residential, commercial, and industrial landuse types allows for a wide variety of groundwater pollutants to enter the karst groundwater systems. Various different models and indices have attempted evaluative approaches to identify issues in urban karst areas, but the methods vary by location and lack a focus on urban karst groundwater quality. There also exists a lack of a data-driven approach that is able to capture short- and long-term changes in threats to …

The Development Of An Integrated Simulation Model On Understandings On The Interaction Between Electromagnetic Waves And Nanoparticles, Xiaojin Wang Jul 2019

The Development Of An Integrated Simulation Model On Understandings On The Interaction Between Electromagnetic Waves And Nanoparticles, Xiaojin Wang

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To investigate the interaction between nanoparticles and electromagnetic waves, a numerical simulation model based on FEM was built in this thesis. Numerical simulation is an important auxiliary research method besides experiments. The optical properties of nanoparticles consist of scattering, absorption, and extinction, and in the case of nanoparticle suspension, the transmission is also involved. This thesis addressed two typical applications based on the established model, one was regarding the nanofluids for solar energy harvesting, and the other was regarding the optical properties of atmospheric soot. In the case of the nanofluids solar energy harvesting, the established model provided a convenient …

Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures

Animal-assisted interventionists incorporating an animal into clinical practice must harness the human–animal bond for therapeutic benefit. Therapists have a duty to understand the complex relational processes occurring in this modality (Stewart, Chang, Parker, & Grubbs, 2016). This paper describes the results of a preliminary study exploring the bonding and attachment processes in animal-assisted interventions in counseling (AAI-C).

Review Of Science In The Archives: Pasts, Presents, Futures, Charlie Harper Jul 2019

Review Of Science In The Archives: Pasts, Presents, Futures, Charlie Harper

Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship

Review of Science in the Archives, an edited volume of 12 essays that emerged from a working group held at the Max Planck Institute for History and Science in 2013 and 2014. This working group sought to develop a shared framework for thinking about how the sciences choose to remember past findings and plan future research (p. vii). The quest for such a shared framework, by necessity, calls for the crossing of long-standing temporal and disciplinary boundaries that artificially silo and separate. Drawing together a cohort of practitioners to build such a framework is no easy task, but this compendium …
