Fault-Tolerant Control For Uncertain Stochastic Singular Time-Delayed Systems Under Non-Linear Fault Inputs And Actuator Failures, V. J. Nirmala, S. Gomathi, T. Saravanakumar

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Thispaperreportsthenovelfault-tolerantcontrolissuesforaclassofuncertainstochasticsingulartime-delyedsystemswith respect to nonlinear fault inputs and actuator failures. More precisely, the delay factor is assumed to be time-varying which belongs to a given interval and parameter uncertainties which are assumed to be time-varying but norm-bounded. By using linear matrix inequality approach together with Lyapunov technique, a delay-dependent condition is derived, which ensures the uncertain stochastic singular system to be regular, impulse-free and asymptotically stable. A robust fault-tolerant control design has been derived to achieve the robust asymptotic stability for all admissible parameter uncertainties, independent of the time-delay and in the presence of certain actuator failures. A set of sufficient …

3-1,2-Dithiole-3-Thione As A Potentially Novel Therapeutic Compound For Sepsis Intervention, Y R. Li, Zhenquan Jia, Hong Zhu

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Through the history of modern medicine, bioactive components in natural products have been either employed directly as medicines or used as prototypes for synthetic drug development. This brief Research Highlights paper considers 3-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (D3T), a member of the 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones-compounds which may naturally occur in cruciferous vegetables. Among 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones, D3T is the most potent member with regard to the capacity of inducing tissue defenses against oxidative and inflammatory stress. Oxidative and inflammatory stress is a major pathophysiological process involved in numerous human disorders, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, and sepsis, to name just a few. This article surveys recent major research …

Thinking Quantum: A New Perspective On Decisionmaking In Law, Christopher B. Jaeger, Jennifer S. Trueblood Jul 2019

Thinking Quantum: A New Perspective On Decisionmaking In Law, Christopher B. Jaeger, Jennifer S. Trueblood

Florida State University Law Review

Behavioral law and economics (BLE) is built on the observation that human decisionmaking is often incompatible with rational choice theory. But if our decisions do not follow the rules of rational choice theory, is there a general set of rules they do follow? Can BLE offer a coherent alternative to rational choice? To the extent it has addressed these questions, BLE has struggled with them. But an emerging psychological theory called "quantum decisionmaking" may offer answers. Quantum decisionmaking offers a new perspective on how people think about probabilities-one that challenges core assumptions of rational choice theory. Specifically, quantum decisionmaking assumes …

Fishery Socioeconomic Outcomes Tool: A Rapid Assessment Tool For Evaluating Socioeconomic Performance Of Fisheries Management, Sarah L. Smith, Rachel Karasik, Aristoteles Stavrinaky, Hirotsugu Uchida, Merrick Burden Jul 2019

Fishery Socioeconomic Outcomes Tool: A Rapid Assessment Tool For Evaluating Socioeconomic Performance Of Fisheries Management, Sarah L. Smith, Rachel Karasik, Aristoteles Stavrinaky, Hirotsugu Uchida, Merrick Burden

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications

As linked social-ecological systems, evaluating the socioeconomic outcomes of fisheries management is essential to understanding fishery performance. While a number of tools have been developed in recent years to evaluate social and economic outcomes of fisheries, many require extensive data collection, making them difficult to implement on a large scale, while others rely on existing data, limiting their applicability to data-limited fisheries. Additionally, socioeconomic objectives of fisheries are likely to differ substantially between fisheries of different scales operating in different geographic and socio-cultural contexts, making the development of universal indicators and comparing results between fisheries challenging. This paper …

Organic Chemistry With A Biological Emphasis Volume Ii, Timothy Soderberg

Chemistry Publications

The traditional approach to teaching Organic Chemistry, taken by most of the textbooks that are currently available, is to focus primarily on the reactions of laboratory synthesis, with much less discussion - in the central chapters, at least - of biological molecules and reactions. This is despite the fact that, in many classrooms, a majority of students are majoring in Biology or Health Sciences rather than in Chemistry, and are presumably taking the course in order to learn about the chemistry that takes place in living things.

In an effort to address this disconnect, I have developed a textbook for …

What Role Remains For De Facto Parenthood?, Gregg Strauss Jul 2019

What Role Remains For De Facto Parenthood?, Gregg Strauss

Florida State University Law Review

Imagine you and your two-year old child move in with your parents, and you rely on them to care for her while you work several jobs at odd hours. After several years, you get into a fight about parenting, move out, and limit their time with your child. Should the law treat them as equal legal parents and allow a judge to decide how much grandparent visitation will benefit your child? Legal doctrines with this effect now appear in the Uniform Parentage Act (2017), the Uniform Nonparent Custody and Visitation Act, and the Restatement of Children and the Law. Under …

Waters of the Southern Ocean are characterized by high macronutrient concentrations but limited availability of trace metals and light, often making it difficult for phytoplankton to achieve maximum growth rates. One strategy employed by Southern Ocean phytoplankton in culture to cope with low light and low dissolved iron (DFe) is to enhance light absorption by increasing their antenna size rather than the number of reaction centers, thereby reducing their Fe demand. Here we provide physiological evidence that natural populations of Southern Ocean phytoplankton employ a similar photoacclimation strategy to cope with low ambient DFe concentrations. During a research cruise to …

Mi Semestre Con La Experiencia Inmigrante: Todos Podríamos Aprender Un Poco, Rachel C. Ziemba

Why Pink Noise Is Best For Enhancing Sleep And Memory: System-Based Explanation, Griselda Acosta, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Several researchers found out that acoustic stimulation during sleep enhances sleep and enhances memory. An interesting -- and somewhat mysterious -- part of this phenomenon is that out of all possible types of noise, the pink noise leads to the most efficient stimulation. In this paper, we use general system-based ideas to explain why in this phenomenon, pink noise works best.

Why Iq Test Scores Are Slightly Decreasing: Possible System-Based Explanation For The Reversed Flynn Effect, Griselda Acosta, Eric Smith, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Researchers who monitor the average intelligence of human population have reasonably recently made an unexpected observation: that after many decades in which this level was constantly growing (this is known as the Flynn effect), at present, this level has started decreasing again. In this paper, we show that this reversed Flynn effect can be, in principle, explained in general system-based terms: namely, it is similar to the fact that a control system usually overshoots before stabilizing at the desired level. A similar idea may explain another unexpected observation -- that the Universe's expansion rate, which was supposed to be decreasing, …

Mapping The Literature Of Dental Hygiene: An Update, Carol L. Watwood, Terry Dean

DLPS Faculty Publications

Objective: This study updates Haaland’s 1999 dental hygiene mapping study. By identifying core journals and estimating database coverage, it characterizes changes in dental hygiene research and aids librarians in collection development and user education.

Method: Cited references from a three-year (2015–2017) sample of core dental hygiene journals were collected, categorized into five formats, and analyzed by format and publication year according to Bradford’s Law of Scattering. CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE, and EMBASE were surveyed to determine the indexing coverage of cited journals.

Results: The number of cited journal titles increased from 389 in 1999 to 1,675 in 2018. Core Zone 1 …

Bridging The Gaps: How Students Seek Disciplinary Coherence In Introductory Physics For Life Science, Benjamin D. Geller , '01, J. Gouvea, B. W. Dreyfus, V. Sawtelle, C. Turpen, E. F. Redish

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

Students in one discipline often receive their scientific training from faculty in other disciplines. As a result of tacit disciplinary differences, especially as implemented in courses at the introductory college level, such students can have difficulty in understanding the nature of the knowledge they are learning in a discipline that they do not identify as their own. We developed a course in introductory physics for life science (IPLS) students that attempts to help them cross disciplinary boundaries. By analyzing student reasoning during recitation sections and interviews, we identified three broad ways in which students in our course meaningfully crossed boundaries: …

Asserting Librarian Expertise And Value In Strategic Marketing Efforts, Memo Cordova, Elizabeth Ramsey Jul 2019

Asserting Librarian Expertise And Value In Strategic Marketing Efforts, Memo Cordova, Elizabeth Ramsey

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This case study of librarian-led marketing efforts at a mid-size academic library examines workarounds to obstacles that librarians frequently encounter when taking on marketing for their libraries. These obstacles often stem from a combination of misunderstanding and/or misplaced priorities at both the unit and administrative levels. Challenges in this case study include a number of factors: no marketing strategy at the administrative level, a lack of understanding from colleagues generally, little time to complete tasks or improve marketing skills, and no dedicated funding. To address these challenges the authors embarked on an internal marketing campaign engaged extensively on social media …

Lithological Character And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Ste. Genevieve Limestone In Western Kentucky, Zachary Dalton Creech Jul 2019

Lithological Character And Sequence Stratigraphy Of The Ste. Genevieve Limestone In Western Kentucky, Zachary Dalton Creech

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Ste. Genevieve Limestone is a Mississippian-aged, carbonate-dominated stratigraphic unit that is a prominent hydrocarbon producer in the Illinois Basin, and is widely distributed in states such as Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. There has been relatively limited study focused on characterizing the Ste. Genevieve Limestone in terms of lithofacies, stacking patterns, and sequence stratigraphic context via analysis of roadcut exposures of the unit in western Kentucky.

The focus of this study is to use lithologic data collected from roadcuts and draft these data into cross sections for presentation of detailed stratigraphic columns that are locally correlative. Seven roadcuts were …

The Reproduction Of Life Death [Table Of Contents], Dawne Mccance Jul 2019

The Reproduction Of Life Death [Table Of Contents], Dawne Mccance

Philosophy & Theory

Based on archival translations of a soon-to-be-published seminar by Jacques Derrida, The Reproduction of Life Death offers an unprecedented study of Derrida’s engagement with molecular biology and genetics. McCance shows how Derrida ties biological accounts of reproduction to the reproductive program of teaching, challenging an auto-reproductive notion of pedagogy, while also reinterpreting the work of psychoanalysis.

Structured as an itinerary of “three rings,” each departing from and coming back to Nietzsche, Derrida’s seminar ties Jacob’s logocentric account of reproduction to the reproductive program of teaching that characterizes the academic institution, challenging this mode of teaching as auto-reproduction along with the …

Men's Time: Pavel Fedotov And The Pressures Of Mid-Nineteenth-Century Masculinity, Allison Leigh Jul 2019

Men's Time: Pavel Fedotov And The Pressures Of Mid-Nineteenth-Century Masculinity, Allison Leigh

Department of Visual Arts

For seven weeks in the spring of 1835, the Russian painter Pavel Fedotov kept a journal. He was, in these months, still an officer serving in the Finland Regiment of the Imperial Guards in St. Petersburg, but he was ultimately to become known as Russia’s most celebrated early realist painter. The journal preserves in unusual depth of detail the monotony and perpetual sameness which characterized life for the nineteen-year old officer as he grew his painterly skill. Examining it, along with a small cluster of the artist’s paintings and drawings, shows that the repetitiousness found in the journal also characterized …

Seasonal Habitat Use, Movement, And Exploitation Of Sauger In The Arkansas River, Peter Matthew Leonard Jul 2019

Seasonal Habitat Use, Movement, And Exploitation Of Sauger In The Arkansas River, Peter Matthew Leonard

Theses and Dissertations from 2019

Sauger (Sander canadensis) are a native game fish present in the Arkansas River and have an affinity for high nutrient levels, high turbidity, and deep moving water. Little is known about Sauger habitat use and movement among navigation pools in the Arkansas River. However, they aggregate below lock and dams during winter and early spring leaving them susceptible to overharvest. I caught 330 Sauger using experimental gillnets downstream from dams in two navigation pools. Fish were externally tagged with Floy Tbar anchor tags (FD94). Of the 330 fish tagged, only five were harvested resulting in a low estimation of exploitation …
