Plasticity Or Local Adaptation?: Survival Of L. Parva Larvae In Varying Salinity, Kaitlyn Cortez, Lauren Mcdaniel, Becky Fuller
Plasticity Or Local Adaptation?: Survival Of L. Parva Larvae In Varying Salinity, Kaitlyn Cortez, Lauren Mcdaniel, Becky Fuller
PRECS student projects
As environmental stressors continue to amplify, Lucania parva, or Rainwater Killifish, are expected to outlast other species in unpredictably fast changing environments, as they are unique in their ability to tolerate multiple salinities. The objective of this research is to understand what affects L. parva’s ability to tolerate salinity and discover the limitations the species might have to tolerating it. Understanding this fish’s biology will help with the conservation of aquatic ecosystems in Florida. Preliminary data and early trends suggest that during early larval stages, L. parva are plastic but the extent of their plasticity is limited as they cannot …

Construction Of A Tn5 Mutant Library In Xanthomonas Cucurbitae, Keirsten Kline, Rikky Rai, Sarah R. Hind
PRECS student projects
The health and yield of important crop plants around the world is a significant concern when faced with food scarcity in the generations to come. The Xanthomonas bacterial genus can infect more than 400 different plant species including economically important crops such as rice and soy. In Illinois, Xanthomonas cucurbitae can infect pumpkin and winter squash and cause bacterial spot disease (Figure 1) resulting in up to 100% yield loss of pumpkin crops. The disease caused by this pathogen has become one of the most significant threats to production of pumpkins in Illinois, the U.S. and the world.

Flavonoids are antioxidants known to be abundant in edible plants. Seven 5,7,3′,4′-tetrahydroxy substituted flavonoids representing each major flavonoid class were used as cytochrome c reductants to systematically investigate the redox role of their C-rings. Additional examples of flavonoids and benzenediols were investigated to better understand the role of the B-ring. Pseudo-first order rate constants (kobs) and apparent bimolecular rate constants (kapp) values were calculated from spectroscopic measurements. Of the seven flavonoids tested, five yielded measurable observed reduction rate constants. Butein (a chalcone) had the highest apparent bimolecular rate constant (kapp), followed by taxifolin (a flavanonol), catechin (a flavanol), eriodictyol …

BACKGROUND: Phthalates are used as plasticizers in the manufacturing of flexible, plastic medical products. Patients can be subjected to high phthalate exposure through contact with plastic medical devices. We aimed to investigate the cardiac safety and biocompatibility of mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP), a phthalate with documented exposure in intensive care patients.
METHODS: Optical mapping of transmembrane voltage and pacing studies were performed on isolated, Langendorff-perfused rat hearts to assess cardiac electrophysiology after MEHP exposure compared with controls. MEHP dose was chosen based on reported blood concentrations after an exchange transfusion procedure.
RESULTS: Thirty-minute exposure to MEHP increased the atrioventricular node (147 …

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that is not curable. HPV can damage cell DNA which increases the risk of oncogene expression; this leads to an increased risk of cancer. HPV is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer, among other types of cancers. Prevention is key because HPV is usually asymptomatic. The population at risk is anyone sexually active, including participation in oral sex. The health care provider should advocate for preventative measures against HPV. There are vaccinations that prevent the contraction of HPV that should be given before a person is sexually active for …

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Aortic stenosis (AS) is a condition where the opening of the aortic valve becomes narrower. The narrowing can be caused by age associated calcification, congenital bicuspid aortic valve, or inflammation associated with rheumatic heart disease. AS due to calcification is the most common heart valve disorder in North America and is increasing in prevalence due to increased life expectancy and an aging population. It is imperative for nurses to maintain an in depth understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease with resulting hemodynamics changes in order to effectively care for this patient population.

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
IndustrialCompressedAirPressureControl(ICAPC)processisoneofthesignificantanddemandingtasksinalltheprocess industries. Due to the unpredictable leakages and nonlinear behavior of the pneumatic control valve, the automatic pressure control is very difficult with respect to its various preferable operating points. In this paper mathematical modeling, robust PID controller and novel parameter optimization technique have been proposed. This paper deals with various effects of disturbances and uncertainties affecting the process dynamics. The novel robust controller yields better set-point tracking capability and survives against the sudden regulation in the load parameter changes. For mathematical modelling and parameter optimization, the robust hybrid form of fminsearch and fmincon (FSFC) technique has been used, which …

In this paper, we propose a modified Cluster Walk Trap (CWT) approach combined with Closed Cycle Approach(CCA). The proposed method uses probability measure in a multimode network to evaluate group of persons involved in common crime and group of crime done by a common person thereby avoiding the difficulty of adjacency matrix. The usage of transitivity based on closed cycle in node identification overcomes the problem of computational complexity with the increased number of nodes and edges. Based on the clustering coefficient value, the influential nodes are classified as victim, suspect and witness. Experiments are conducted using the publicly available …

Making Sense Of The Anti-Same-Sex-Marriage Movement In France, Scott Gunther
Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article examines the political style and rhetoric of the Manif pour tous (MPT), the main organization opposing same-sex marriage in France, from summer 2013 to the present. It exposes how the MPT's style and rhetoric differ from those of their American counterparts, and what this tells us about the different strategies of political movements in France and the United States generally. It is based on an analysis of the language used by activists whom I interviewed in 2014 and 2015 and on a discourse analysis of the MPT’s website, Facebook page, Twitter feed, and press releases since 2013. This …

In 1956, evolutionary biologist J.B.S. Haldane posed a question to anthropologists: “Are the biological differences between human groups comparable with those between groups of domestic animals such as greyhounds and bulldogs…?” It reads as if it were posted on social media today. The analogy comparing human races to dog breeds is not only widespread in history and pop culture, but also sounds like scientific justification for eschewing the social construction of race, or for holding racist beliefs about human nature. Here we answer Haldane’s question in an effort to improve the public understanding of human biological variation and “race”—two phenomena …
Myocardial Infarction, Sarah Robinson
Myocardial Infarction, Sarah Robinson
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Myocardial infarction (MI) is a life threatening condition that causes irreversible damage and necrosis of the myocardium due to prolonged ischemia (Davies, 2016). Myocardial ischemia is often a result of coronary artery disease that develops through a process called atherosclerosis (Andrus et al., 2015). It is estimated that every 40 seconds a person in the United States suffers from a myocardial infarction (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Healthcare providers have the opportunity to decrease the incidence of MI through primary prevention. Educating patients on the importance of modifying risk factors such as diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and hypertension requires …

Strategies To Combat Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis: Inhalable Microparticles Formulated With Anti-Tubercular Antibiotics And Efflux Pump Inhibitors, Elliott K. Miller
Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs
Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is an intracellular pathogen which can remain dormant within the human body for years (latent tuberculosis), and once active requires extensive multidrug therapies for treatment. Long-term antibiotic(s) exposure have led to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains which require novel treatment approaches to combat Mtb resistance. Mtb may also utilize efflux pumps to expel antibiotics and promote bacterial survival, potentially mediating drug tolerance, which has been hypothesized to contribute to antibiotic resistance. Efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs) such as verapamil (VER) may potentiate effects of first-line anti-tubercular drugs (ATDs) such as rifampicin …

A Nonstandard Finite Difference Scheme For Water-Related Disease Mathematical Model, Meksianis Z. Ndii, Bertha S. Djahi, David Tambaru
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, a Nonstandard Finite Difference Scheme (NSFDS) is constructed for a water-related disease mathematical model. The properties of the resulting discrete models are analysed and compared with its corresponding deterministic model. Furthermore, we compare the numerical solutions of NSDFS, Euler method and MATLAB’s ode45. It is shown that the resulting discrete model preserves essential properties of the continous model such as positivity and stability. The results are confirmed numerically. Furthermore, numerical simulations using NSFDS, Euler method and MATLAB’s ode45 give similar results.
