Stereodynamical Control Of A Quantum Scattering Resonance In Cold Molecular Collisions, Pablo G. Jambrina, James F.E. Croft, Hua Guo, Mark Brouard, Balakrishnan Naduvalath, F. Javier Aoiz

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Cold collisions of light molecules are often dominated by a single partial wave resonance. For the rotational quenching of HD (v=1, j=2) by collisions with ground state para-H2, the process is dominated by a single L=2 partial wave resonance centered around 0.1 K. Here, we show that this resonance can be switched on or off simply by appropriate alignment of the HD rotational angular momentum relative to the initial velocity vector, thereby enabling complete control of the collision outcome.

Reducing Threading Dislocation In Gasb Epilayer Grown On Gaas Substrate For Photovoltaic And Thermophotovoltaic Application, Ahmad Mansoori

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

GaSb based photovoltaic devices have been demonstrated on GaAs substrates by an inducing interfacial array of 90° misfit dislocations. Despite the beneficial qualities of the highly stable 90° misfit dislocation, there is a significant density of residual threading dislocations in the GaSb layer, resulting in the degradation of the electrical performance of such photovoltaic cells compared to lattice matched devices. We aim to reduce threading dislocation density by optimizing growth temperature and by using an AlSb dislocation filtering layer. The growth temperature optimization results in a reduction of the threading dislocation density to 1.3 × 108 cm−2. …

Boruck, James Thissen, Selene Garcia -Luna, Mona Hwang, Megan R. Wise De Valdez, Crystal J. Jaing, Gabriel L. Hamer, Matthias Frank

Biology Faculty Publications (Archived)

Several mosquito-borne diseases affecting humans are emerging or re-emerging in the United States. The early detection of pathogens in mosquito populations is essential to prevent and control the spread of these diseases. In this study, we tested the potential applicability of the Lawrence Livermore Microbial Detection Array (LLMDA) to enhance bio-surveillance by detecting microbes present in Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Culex mosquitoes that are major vector species globally, including in Texas. The sensitivity and reproducibility of the LLMDA was tested in mosquito samples spiked with different concentrations of dengue virus (DENV) revealing a detection limit of >100 but <1000 pfu/mL. Additionally, field-collected mosquitoes from Chicago, Illinois and College Station, Texas of known infection status (West Nile virus (WNV) and Culex flavivirus (CxFLAV) positive) were tested on the LLMDA to confirm its efficiency. Mosquito field samples of unknown infection status, collected in San Antonio, TX and the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV), TX were run on the LLMDA and further confirmed by PCR or qPCR. The analysis of the field samples with the LLMDA revealed the presence of cell fusing agent virus (CFAV) in Ae. …

Assessing Anthocyanin Biosynthesis In Solanaceae As A Model Pathway For Secondary Metabolism, Zou Li, Trisha Vickrey, Moira G. Mcnally, Shirley J. Sato, Thomas E. Clemente, Jeffrey P. Mower

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Solanaceae have played an important role in elucidating how flower color is specified by the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway (FBP), which produces anthocyanins and other secondary metabolites. With well-established reverse genetics tools and rich genomic resources, Solanaceae provide a robust framework to examine the diversification of this well-studied pathway over short evolutionary timescales and to evaluate the predictability of genetic perturbation on pathway flux. Genomes of eight Solanaceae species, nine related asterids, and four rosids were mined to evaluate variation in copy number of the suite of FBP enzymes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis. Comparison of annotation sources indicated that the NCBI …

B-Lymphocyte Phenotype Determines T-Lymphocyte Subset Differentiation In Autoimmune Diabetes., Leire Egia-Mendikute, Berta Arpa, Estela Rosell-Mases, Marta Corral-Pujol, Jorge Carrascal, Jorge Carrillo, Conchi Mora, Harry Chapman, Anaïs Panosa, Marta Vives-Pi, Thomas Stratmann, David V. Serreze, Joan Verdaguer

Faculty Research 2019

Previous studies indicate that B-lymphocytes play a key role activating diabetogenic T-lymphocytes during the development of autoimmune diabetes. Recently, two transgenic NOD mouse models were generated: the NOD-PerIg and the 116C-NOD mice. In NOD-PerIg mice, B-lymphocytes acquire an activated proliferative phenotype and support accelerated autoimmune diabetes development. In contrast, in 116C-NOD mice, B-lymphocytes display an anergic-like phenotype delaying autoimmune diabetes onset and decreasing disease incidence. The present study further evaluates the T- and B-lymphocyte phenotype in both models. In islet-infiltrating B-lymphocytes (IIBLs) from 116C-NOD mice, the expression of H2-Kd and H2-Ag7 is decreased, whereas that of …

The Traits That Predict The Magnitude And Spatial Scale Of Forest Bird Responses To Urbanization Intensity, Grant D. Paton, Alexandra V. Shoffner, Andrew M. Wilson, Sara A. Gagné Jul 2019

The Traits That Predict The Magnitude And Spatial Scale Of Forest Bird Responses To Urbanization Intensity, Grant D. Paton, Alexandra V. Shoffner, Andrew M. Wilson, Sara A. Gagné

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

As humans continue moving to urban areas, there is a growing need to understand the effects of urban intensification on native wildlife populations. Forest species in remnant habitat are particularly vulnerable to urban intensification, but the mechanisms behind these effects are poorly understood. An understanding of how species traits, as proxies for mechanisms, mediate the effects of urban intensification on forest species can help fill this knowledge gap. Using a large point count dataset from the Second Pennsylvania Breeding Bird Atlas, we tested for the effects of species traits on the magnitude and spatial scale of the responses of 58 …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Acoustics play a central role in humankind’s interactions with the ocean and the life within. Passive listening to ocean “soundscapes” informs us about the physical and bio-acoustic environment from earthquakes to communication between fish. Active acoustic probing of the environment informs us about ocean topography, currents and temperature, and abundance and type of marine life vital to fisheries and biodiversity related interests. The two together in a multi-purpose network can lead to discovery and improve understanding of ocean ecosystem health and biodiversity, climate variability and change, and marine hazards and maritime safety. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) of sound generated and …
