Effect Of Konjac Glucomannan On The Hygroscopic Characteristics Of Cut Tobacco, Liang Miao, Zhang Guo, Liu Cuimei, Li Bin, Zhang Ke, Lv Bin

Food and Machinery

The effect of konjac glucomannan (KGM) addition on the hygroscopic characteristics of cut tobacco was investigated by using isothermal adsorption/desorption ability testing device. The results showed that the introduction of KGM humectant enhanced the moisture holding capacity of cut tobacco and slowed down the water loss process. The drying rate constants (k) calculated using Henderson & Pabis model were reduced to varying degrees for cut tobacco from different parts of a tobacco plant. In addition, the isothermal sorption and desorption curves exhibited the form of adsorption curve type III. The addition of KGM can effectively increase hygroscopic hysteresis of cut …

Creating New Metaphors For Women Engineering Students Through Qualitative Methods, Cliff Haynes

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study is to describe female students’ experiences in an engineering living-learning program using metaphorical analysis through a constructivist theoretical perspective. Extant literature uses metaphors from a negative viewpoint or a deficit model to describe the experiences of female undergraduates in engineering; however, new metaphors have not been used to describe the experience. This study aims to fill existing gaps in LLP literature using qualitative methods. Data from 13 semi-structured individual interviews (7 initial interviews and 6 follow-up interviews) serve as the primary data source. After conducting metaphorical analysis, I found five interpretive metaphors emerging: LLP as …

Ocd And Impulsivity: Considering The Role Of Emotion, Stephanie E. Hudiburgh Jul 2019

Ocd And Impulsivity: Considering The Role Of Emotion, Stephanie E. Hudiburgh

Open Access Theses

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a condition marked by recurrent and distressing thoughts, images, and impulses that are typically accompanied by repetitive physical or mental rituals. Previous research has explored impulsivity as a potential risk factor for OCD using a variety of self-report and behavioral measures; however, these studies have yielded inconsistent results. An emerging line of work suggests that emotional precipitation may be an important consideration when looking at the role of impulsivity across the spectrum of psychopathology, including OCD. The current study examined the relationship between symptoms of OCD and emotion-based impulsivity using the Three Factor Impulsivity Index, a …

Watching “Insidious” – On The Social Construction Of Fear, Charlotte D. Renda Jul 2019

Watching “Insidious” – On The Social Construction Of Fear, Charlotte D. Renda

The Qualitative Report

As mass media are an integral part of our everyday lives, their role in constituting emotions and feeling rules receives heightened attention. However, content analyses and psychoanalytical/reaction analyses focus on a film-viewer-relation that does not consider the group character of media consumption. This article deals with the question of how fear is socially constructed and interactively negotiated by taking an ethnomethodological look at videos that teenagers have taken of themselves while watching the horror movie Insidious. It puts forward two inter-related forms of ambiguity: the ambiguity of what emotions are appropriate, that is, the ways in which feeling rules are …

Health Disparities In The Incidence And Survival Of Women With Ovarian Cancer In Florida: A Florida Cancer Database System Analysis, Ashly C. Westrick

Open Access Dissertations

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest gynecological cancer in the United States. Despite improvements in the incidence and survival of women with ovarian cancer, racial/ethnic disparities still exist. Determining the epidemiology of a disease and the distribution within the population is critical to establish research priority areas and help guide public health programs and policies. Identifying and describing population disparities in health is important to provide evidence for targeted interventions. As the Ecosocial theory of disease distribution explicates, racial/ethnic disparities are multifactorial and often emerge from the embodiment of biological, social and historical exposures both within the individual and high-level factors …

Evaluation Of Recreational Fishing Demand For Billfish Resources In Guatemala, Julie Elizabeth Brown Jul 2019

Evaluation Of Recreational Fishing Demand For Billfish Resources In Guatemala, Julie Elizabeth Brown

Open Access Dissertations

Bycatch mortality from commercial tuna fisheries threatens billfish populations in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, which are also used for lucrative recreational tourism industries. The recreational billfish fishery in Guatemala is characterized by seasonally high daily sailfish catch rates, consistently 2-3 times higher than anywhere else on Earth, and is entirely catch-and-release. The anglers are predominantly tourists, bringing financial contributions to Guatemala. Until now, Guatemala’s government and international tuna management organizations could not consider the value of this sustainable use of billfish resources, because previous estimates were poorly defined and estimated. We used an innovative, market-based technique to estimate the value …

Reproductive Ecology And Movement Of Pallid Sturgeon In The Upper Missouri River, Montana, Luke M. Holmquist, Christopher S. Guy, Anne Tews, David J. Trimpe, Molly A.H. Webb

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Successful recruitment of endangered pallid sturgeon has not been documented in the upper Missouri River basin for decades, and research on the reproductive ecology of pallid sturgeon has been hindered by low sample size. A conservation propagation program was initiated in the 1990s, and the oldest age class of hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon are becoming sexually mature increasing the number of reproductively‐ active fish in the system. However, it is currently unknown how the reproductive ecology of hatchery‐origin pallid sturgeon relates to the few remaining wild fish. Following spring reproductive assessments, weekly relocations were recorded for each individual from late‐May to …

Excluding Women, Catherine Dauvergne, Hannah Lindy

All Faculty Publications

This article reviews 16 years of Canadian case law applying the Refugee Convention’s exclusion provisions to women. Despite a quarter of a century of strong scholarly and policy-making work asserting the need for attention to gender in refugee law, this dataset shows that, in questions of exclusion, gendered analysis is almost entirely absent. By contrast, in seeking explanations for the factual basis of exclusion in these cases, gender is almost always an explanatory factor. This stark observation leads us to conclude that significant additional work – both scholarly and policy-focused – is required. The article also considers whether a more …

Reconstruction Of Northeastern Pacific Ocean Holocene Production Using Marine Mammal Archaeofauna, Andrea M. Traffichini Jul 2019

Reconstruction Of Northeastern Pacific Ocean Holocene Production Using Marine Mammal Archaeofauna, Andrea M. Traffichini

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Changes in marine production play a key role in determining the trophic structure of the northeastern Pacific Ocean. This is a region of great environmental fluctuations due to modern, historical, and paleo-environmental variability recorded throughout the Holocene. These fluctuations are recorded in the bone collagen of the marine mammals that reside in these waters. Marine mammal remains from four previously excavated archaeological deposits on Unalaska Island, Alaska are used as a proxy for marine production changes throughout the Holocene (4,500 BP to 350 BP). Historic and modern samples from museum collections, subsistence harvests, and previously published data provide a distinct …

Persistence And Turnover In Desert Plant Communities During A 37-Yr Period Of Land Use And Climate Change, Scott R. Abella, Ross J. Guida, Chris L. Roberts, Carrie M. Norman, James S. Holland

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Understanding long‐term changes in ecological communities during global change is a priority for 21st‐century ecology. Deserts, already at climatic extremes, are of unique interest because they are projected to be ecosystems most responsive to global change. Within a 500‐km2 landscape in the Mojave Desert, USA, we measured perennial plant communities at 100 sites three times (1979, 2008, and 2016) during 37 yr to evaluate six hypotheses of community change. These hypotheses encompassed shifts in community measures (e.g., diversity, cover) and species elevational distributions, biotic homogenization, disproportionately large change at the highest elevations, relationships between turnover and species’ responses to disturbance …
