Catalytic C-C Silylation Reactions, Thirupataiah Avullala
Catalytic C-C Silylation Reactions, Thirupataiah Avullala
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
In my doctoral studies, the research is mainly focused on developing highly regio- and chemoselective C–C silylation of cyclopropanol derivatives with a hydrosilyl acetal directing group. This approach involves use of a relay of Ir-catalyzed hydrosilylation of inexpensive and readily prepared cyclopropanoacetates and Rh-catalyzed C–C silylation to achieve dioxasilolanes and dioxasilepines. In Chapter 1, we report a redox-neutral, catalytic C–C activation of cyclopropyl acetates to produce silicon-containing five-membered heterocycles in a highly regio- and chemoselective fashion. The umpolung selective silylation leading to dioxasilolanes is opposed to contemporary selective C–C functionalization protocols of cyclopropanols. Lewis base activation of dioxasilolanes as silyl …

Development Of Innovative Theranostic Platforms For Biomedical Applications, Min Kyung Khang
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Modern technologies have been successfully identifying patient’s disease-related genetic information and developing effective drugs continuously. The discovery of molecular biomarkers paves new roads for potential individualized therapeutic applications; thus far, the call for a more development of advanced targeting/delivery platforms is highly required in the bioengineering field. Unfortunately, bioengineered targeting platforms for drug delivery at the right place, right dosage and right time have still remained in the developmental stages. To develop innovative nanosystems for various biomedical applications, polymer chemistry and click chemistry are needed to improve the function of the nanosystems. My dissertation research is based upon a unique …

Non-Heme Iron Oxygenases: An Investigation Of The Protein Ligand Effects On The Chemical Reactivity In Miae And Cysteamine Dioxygenases, Philip Palacios
Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Considerable research interest has focused on the non-heme oxygenase/oxidase enzyme family because of vast array of chemically diverse O2-depedent oxidations they participate in. For example, the bacterial multicomponent monooxygenases (sMMOH and ToMOH) are bacterial diiron enzymes that are involved in the oxidations of simple carbon sources (methane and toluene) for nutrition and other cellular cycles. Investigations of the BMM systems have significant implications for the research and development in greenhouse emissions. The hydroxylase component of the BMM superfamily is coordinated by 2-Histidine-4-carboxylate ligands (Asp or Glu) [2H4C]. The [2H4C] configuration is the typical moiety for the 2-electron oxidation in the …

A Qualitative Investigation Of The Andragogical Teaching Methods Used In Adult Group Piano/Organ Instruction, Deborah Timpone Curran
Dissertations
This qualitative case study explored adult keyboard (piano/organ) students in a group environment at a piano/organ store in the Midwest United States. Included in the study was a Level 1 Piano class, a Level 2 Piano class, and one Seniors’ Organ class. The researcher explored the use of andragogical principles in the group keyboard classes based upon the programming and instruction, especially in connection with Knowles’ six assumptions and eight processes of andragogy. In addition, the researcher also focused on the presence of trust in the relationships between instructor(s) and student participants, or the lack thereof. The use of Henschke’s …
You Don’T Need Lungs To Suffer: Fish Suffering In The Age Of Climate Change With A Call For Regulatory Reform, David N. Cassuto, Amy O'Brien
You Don’T Need Lungs To Suffer: Fish Suffering In The Age Of Climate Change With A Call For Regulatory Reform, David N. Cassuto, Amy O'Brien
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Fish are sentient — they feel pain and suffer. Yet, while we see increasing interest in protecting birds and mammals in industries such as farming and research (albeit few laws), no such attention has been paid to the suffering of fish in the fishing industry. Consideration of fish welfare including reducing needless suffering should be a component of fisheries management. This article focuses on fisheries management practices, the effects of anthropogenic climate change on fisheries management practices, and the moral implications of fish sentience on the development and amendment of global fishing practices. Part I examines domestic and international fisheries, …
The New Food Safety, Margot J. Pollans, Emily M. Broad Leib
The New Food Safety, Margot J. Pollans, Emily M. Broad Leib
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
A safe food supply is essential for a healthy society. Our food system is replete with different types of risk, yet food safety is often narrowly understood as encompassing only foodborne illness and other risks related directly to food ingestion. This Article argues for a more comprehensive definition of food safety, one that includes not just acute, ingestion-related risks, but also whole-diet cumulative ingestion risks, and cradle-to-grave risks of food production and disposal. This broader definition, which we call “Food System Safety,” draws under the header of food safety a variety of historically siloed, and under-regulated, food system issues including …
Aerobic Photolysis Mecbl: Structure And Electronic Properties Of Cbl-O-O-Ch3 Intermediate., Aida Bazarganpour
Aerobic Photolysis Mecbl: Structure And Electronic Properties Of Cbl-O-O-Ch3 Intermediate., Aida Bazarganpour
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The photolysis of methylcobalamin (coenzyme B12) results in homolytic cleavage of the Co-C bond, forming cob(II)alamin and the Co(II)/CH3 radical pair (RP) which further react with O2 to form the intermediate (R-O-O-Cbl) that involves in the aerobic photolysis. It has been suggested that the key intermediate (R-O-O-Cbl) involves in aerobic photolysis is the insertion of O2 between the Co-C bond. Clearly, the exposure of light is needed to induce the activation Co-C bond for generating the Co(II)/CH3 radical pair (RP). The intermediate (R-O-O-Cbl) undergoes further decomposition to aldehyde as the final product of aerobic …

Quality Of Wheat Grains (Triticum Aestivum) Generationally Exposed To Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles (Nceo2), Oluwasegun Michael Abolade
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The impacts of generational exposure to engineered nanomaterial on grain quality are poorly documented. This study was performed on wheat grains harvested from plants grown in soil amended with cerium oxide nanoparticles (nCeO2) at the 2nd and 3rd generations. Third generation experiment was performed at low and high nitrogen (N) soil levels. The goal was to investigate changes in grain fatty acid and elemental contents due to parental exposure (C1 vs T1 in 2nd generation, C1C2 vs T1T2 in 3rd generation) or current generation …

Characterizing Nodule Endophyte Communities In Glycine Max And Lablab Purpureus Using Next-Generation Sequencing, Scott David Mcelveen
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Biological nitrogen fixation by rhizobia in the root nodules of legumes is a significant source of agricultural nitrogen in global crop production systems. The influence of and interaction of factors involved in nodule endophyte selection remain poorly understood. In the present study, the influences of crop rotation (soybean-legume vs. cotton-legume) and recalcitrant soil organic matter (compost amendment) on the relative distribution of endophytic bacteria in the root nodules of greenhouse-grown soybean and lablab were investigated by extracting, amplifying, and sequencing 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and nifH genes. Neither preceding crop nor compost amendment were found to have an influence on …

Prediction Of High School Graduation With Decision Trees, Andrea M. Lee
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
While working as an educator for the past fourteen years, we are always looking at data and determining ways to help our students. Graduation status is one area of interest. I wanted to apply statistical methods to try and find early indicators of those students who may drop out, thus being able to provide early intervention to those students. With early intervention, we may be able to lower our dropout rate. While studying different methods of pattern recognition, I found that the decision tree method in machine learning was the best for the data that I had collected. Decision trees …
Historical Floodplain Sedimentation Rates Using Mining Contaminant Profiles, Cesium-137, And Sediment Source Indicators Along The Lower Big River, Jefferson County, Missouri, Miranda M. Jordan
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Floodplain sedimentology and geochemistry can indicate the age of sediment layers to evaluate the history of human-caused sedimentation in a watershed. While the Ozark Highlands of Missouri has had a long history of settlement and land disturbance beginning in the early 1800s, there are few studies that have investigated the effects of these anthropogenic activities on river form and legacy sedimentation. The goal of this study is to characterize the sediment properties and geochemical trends in post-settlement floodplain deposits along lower Big River in Jefferson County, Missouri. This study evaluated trends of sediment properties at 3 cm intervals in a …
Pollinator Networks In Established Urban Prairies Compared To Rural Remnant Prairies, Amanda Lynn Coleman
Pollinator Networks In Established Urban Prairies Compared To Rural Remnant Prairies, Amanda Lynn Coleman
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Prairies support over 800 species of plants, insects, birds, fish, and mammals, even though only 1% of remnant prairies remain in the United States. Importantly, urban prairie “gardens/plots” are gaining popularity for their ecological services. However, it is not known to what extent these small urban prairies can sustain the plant-pollinator interactions that are vital to both the insects and the plants. The goal of my research was to examine plant/pollinator interactions in three urban prairies in southwest Missouri and compare them to rural prairies because rural prairies were predicted to have stronger plant/pollinator networks. Rural units were: Woods Prairie, …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Gd-Doped Inp/Zns Quantum Dots For Use In Multimodal Imaging Probes, Molly Erin Duszynski
Synthesis And Characterization Of Gd-Doped Inp/Zns Quantum Dots For Use In Multimodal Imaging Probes, Molly Erin Duszynski
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Quantum dots (QDs), which are intensely fluorescent nanocrystals ranging 2-10 nanometers in diameter, have shown promise in fluorescence imaging. However, in vivo applications of QDs are limited due to the opaque surrounding of tissue and bones. In this study, InP/ZnS QDs were doped with a paramagnetic atom in an attempt to render them MRI-active. We have further bioconjugated these nanoprobes to develop highly specific MRI-active probes that can be used for detection of neurodegenerative diseases. These bioconjugated nanoprobes detect a mutated form of alpha-synuclein that forms oligomers that are a hallmark of Parkinson’s disease andother alpha-synucleinopathies. Here, we have optimized …
Geomorphic And Land Use Controls On Headwater Channel Morphology In Mark Twain National Forest, Grace F. Roman
Geomorphic And Land Use Controls On Headwater Channel Morphology In Mark Twain National Forest, Grace F. Roman
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Prescribed burning has been used over the past two decades to manage forests and restore shortleaf pine-oak woodlands in Mark Twain National Forest (MTNF). While soil studies have been completed, no assessments of burning practices on small drainage channel systems have yet been done. Headwater streams may account for more than two-thirds of total stream length and are important to the maintenance of hydrologic connectivity in watersheds. This study’s focus is on understanding the relationship between frequency of forest burning and channel morphology (size, shape, and substrate) of headwater streams (km2). A combination of field measurements, geo-processing methods, …
Sequence Analysis Of The Ren1 Genomic Region From The Grapevine ‘Kishmish Vatkana’, Dani Joseph
Sequence Analysis Of The Ren1 Genomic Region From The Grapevine ‘Kishmish Vatkana’, Dani Joseph
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The REN1 region of the grapevine ‘Kishmish Vatkana’ was mapped as the locus that confers resistance to the economically important disease, grape powdery mildew. The purpose of this work was to extend the nucleotide sequence information of this region. By sequencing a heretofore unknown bacterial artificial chromosome clone, the sequence information of this region was extended by 46,890 nucleotides. Sequencing was performed using the third-generation sequencing method, named Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT). In order to improve the accuracy of the sequence data, a modified ONT library preparation method was developed. ONT sequencing of a library prepared with the modified protocol …

Yoga To Decrease The Stress Response: Gentle Yoga Encourages Faster Decline In Salivary Cortisol Concentrations Following Participation In Tsst, Tabetha Gaile Hopke
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Short-term, activation of the human stress response system is beneficial as it prepares the body to deal with stressors at hand (McEwen & Stellar, 1993). If this system is overactive or chronically active however, it can negatively impact health and longevity (Cohen, Janicki-Deverts, & Miller, 2007). According to a review conducted by Ross & Thomas (2010) implementation of a yoga practice has been shown to down-regulate the stress response system. The present study aimed to expand on current research involving yoga for stress reduction by exploring whether participation in gentle yoga could decrease the stress response more quickly than naturally …

Elucidating Immune Signaling Of Influenza A Virus And Aspergillus Fumigatus Co-Infections Through Pioneered Model Development, Meagan Danyelle Rippee-Brooks
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Bacterial co-infections with influenza A virus (IAV) are extremely serious and life-threatening. However, there exists limited understanding about the importance of fungal infections with IAV. Clinical case reports indicate that fungal co-infections do occur and suggest the IAV pandemic of 2009 had a propensity to predispose patients to secondary fungal infections more than previous IAV strains. IAV-fungal co-infections are marked by high mortality rates of 47 to 61% in previously healthy individuals between the ages of 20 and 60. Yet, the variables involved in this co-infection remain undetermined. I achieved effective recapitulation of this co-infection using a C57Bl/6 murine (mouse) …

Making A Tiger's Day: Free-Operant Assessment And Environmental Enrichment, Trista Yvonne Shrock
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Problem behaviors occur often in captive wild animals due to stress and boredom. Environmental enrichment is one of the most successful methods to help minimize these types of behaviors in many captive wild animals. The current study investigated preferences of play items and scents for seven adult Bengal tigers in a Tiger Sanctuary using a free-operant preference assessment. Two subspecies of Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris) are represented. Six of the tigers are Panthera tigris tigris and one is Panthera tigris altaica. Three phases were run on each tiger, ultimately establishing a hierarchy of preferred play items and …

The Philosophical Underpinnings And Negative Consequences Of The Indian Child Welfare Act, Elizabeth Sharon Morris
The Philosophical Underpinnings And Negative Consequences Of The Indian Child Welfare Act, Elizabeth Sharon Morris
Masters Theses
This paper will examine the philosophical underpinnings of current federal Indian policy and its physical, emotional, and economic consequences on individuals and communities. The U.S. Civil Rights Commission found in 1990 that “[T]he Government of the United States has failed to provide civil rights protection for Native Americans living on reservations” (W. B. Allen 1990, 2). As Regan (2014) observes, individuals have been denied full title to their property – and thus use of the property as leverage to improve their economic condition (Regan 2014). Tribal executive and judicial branches have been accused of illegal search and seizures, denial of …

Uncovering Underlying Features For State Transition Modeling, Ashkan Farahani
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Modeling of a dynamic system is the representation of the interconnectivity of system state variables and their evolutionary trajectory over time. In this dissertation, the terminology “state transition modeling” refers to a situation when the system state transitions and its evolution is unknown and needs to be estimated. There are situations in many application settings where one does not simply observe the behavior of the system, but also has a desire to take action, intervene, and manipulate one or more system variables, and is interested in seeing the causal effect of the intervention. These interventions within a purely observational setting, …

Suppressor Of Cytokine Signaling-3 In Pregnant Females With Or Without Hypertension, Huma Shoukat Ali, Mubeen Ali, Sabah Farhat, Syeda Sadia Fatima
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Suppression of Cytokine Signalling-3 (SOCS-3) modulates the inflammatory pathways responsible for vascular stability. Therefore, we aimed to estimate SOCS-3 levels in 2nd trimester pregnant females and correlate it with blood pressure. A case control study recruiting (n=111) females was conducted at the Aga Khan University. They were classified as pregnancy induced hypertensives ornormotensive as per American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Guidelines. Weight, Body mass index, lipid profile and blood glucose were recorded while SOCS-3 was measured by ELISA. Higher SOCS-3 levels were seen in hypertensive group (30 pg/ml) versus normotensive (16 pg/ml). Both Systolic & diastolic blood pressure (r=0.520; …

Cancer Cell Population Growth Kinetics At Low Densities Deviate From The Exponential Growth Model And Suggest An Allee Effect., Kaitlyn E Johnson, Grant Howard, William Mo, Michael K Strasser, Ernesto A B F Lima, Sui Huang, Amy Brock
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Most models of cancer cell population expansion assume exponential growth kinetics at low cell densities, with deviations to account for observed slowing of growth rate only at higher densities due to limited resources such as space and nutrients. However, recent preclinical and clinical observations of tumor initiation or recurrence indicate the presence of tumor growth kinetics in which growth rates scale positively with cell numbers. These observations are analogous to the cooperative behavior of species in an ecosystem described by the ecological principle of the Allee effect. In preclinical and clinical models, however, tumor growth data are limited by the …

Dark Networks And Pathogens Undermining Democracies: Guillermo Del Toro And Chuck Hogan’S The Strain, Carmen A. Serrano
Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship
As economies and cultures morph due to technoscience, vampire entities also mutate so as to still provoke fear ‒their bodies change, their populations grow and their networks expand; yet the way to annihilate them becomes less obvious. Responding to these modern day changes, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s television series The Strain (2014-2017) uncannily echoes, or perhaps foreshadows, the social realities under an informational, networked, and epidemiological paradigm. The filmmakers here present viewers with hybrid monsters and environments that are highly interconnected and pathogenic, reflecting contemporary social fears regarding failing democracies and global pandemics. Drawing from Guillermo del Toro’s …

Polarization-Resolved Second Harmonic Generation Microscopy Study Of Cardiac Hypertrophy, Cai Yuan
All Dissertations
As the most important structural and functional protein of cardiomyocyte, myosin is sensitive to mechanical and hormonal stimulus during cardiac hypertrophy. Accumulating evidence suggests that the changes in myosin during cardiac hypertrophy can eventually lead to heart failure. Therefore, the effective detection of the structural changes in myosin is critical to understanding the underlying mechanisms of cardiac hypertrophy and contributes to the early diagnose and treatment of cardiac hypertrophy.
Changes in myosin during the development of cardiac hypertrophy are not limited to tissue, cellular or sub-cellular levels such as series and parallel addition of sarcomere. Before cardiac hypertrophy develops obvious …
