Flexible Electrochemical Sensors Based On Iridium Oxide For Biomedical Applications, Xuesong Yang Aug 2019

Flexible Electrochemical Sensors Based On Iridium Oxide For Biomedical Applications, Xuesong Yang

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Considering the disadvantages of the costly, laborious, and time-consuming traditional clinical analyses, there is a tendency of developing non-hospital point-of-care which allows patients to monitor their health conditions conveniently at home. To optimize the convenience of the point-of-care instruments, a wearable device with the ability of detecting different biological components in different biological conditions is preferer. The device should also have the qualities of rapid analyses, high accuracy, and high sensitivity. To accomplish these requirements, we proposed a flexible electrochemical sensor based on iridium oxide (IrOx). As a noble metal, iridium oxide has the advantages of bio-compatible, stable, and corrosive …

Today, more than ever, data modeling and analysis play a vital role for enterprises in terms of finding actionable business intelligence. Data is being collected on a large scale from multiple sources hoping they can be leveraged using big data analysis techniques. However, challenges associated with the analysis of such data are numerous and depends on the characteristics of the data being collected. In many real-world applications, data sets are becoming complex as they are characterised by multiple entity types and multiple features (termed relationships) between entities. There is a need for an elegant approach to not only model such …

The Effect Of Controlled Nanomaterial Deposition Towards Electrodes For Microbial Fuel Cells And Electrolysis Cells, Bryan Dennis Steinhoff Aug 2019

The Effect Of Controlled Nanomaterial Deposition Towards Electrodes For Microbial Fuel Cells And Electrolysis Cells, Bryan Dennis Steinhoff

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are relatively new energy harvesting technologies that utilize the bacteria in wastewater or other organic-rich aqueous media to produce either electricity or hydrogen gas, respectively. Given that MFCs and MECs are newer technologies, there has been many works over the past two decades that have provided understanding into how modifying electrode surface chemistry can improve these cells. It has been widely known that increasing the surface functional groups of MFC anodes, either chemically or thermally, causes the cell power density to increase dramatically. Since MFCs and MECs use the same anodes, …

Design And Optimization Of Additively Manufactured Heat Sink And Heat Spreader For Microelectronics Cooling, Aditya Krishna Ganesh Ram

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

High performance cooling is a critical requirement for modern microprocessors that generate large amounts of non-uniformly distributed heat. Metal heat spreaders and heat sinks have been traditionally used for thermal management. While the design of these components has traditionallly been restricted by manufacturability, in recent years, additive manufacturing has offered the capability to manufacture almost any design. This work analyzes and optimizes the performance of an additively manufactured heat sink and heat spreader. Computational heat transfer simulations were carried out to understand the variation of chip temperature and pressure drop for various designs. Discussion of key findings include the thermal …

Molecular Dynamics (Md) Thermal Simulations Of Molecular Bridging Across The Cathode-Separator Interface In Li-Ion Cell, Abhijeet Sundarrao Dhakane

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

While Li-ion cells show outstanding electrochemical performance, their poor thermal transport characteristics results in reduced performance as well as significant safety concerns. The heterogeneous interface between cathode and separator plays a vital role in the dissipation of heat within a Li-ion cell. Previous studies showed that the cathode-separator interfacial thermal resistance contributes around 88% of total thermal resistance within the cell. In this research, thermal conductance across the cathode-separator interface is calculated using molecular dynamics simulations. Thermal transport in a pristine heterogeneous interface as well as interfaces functionalized with monolayers of APTES, nBTMS and MPTMS molecules is studied. The impact …

These devices are used to gather new data about various physical parameters in small and large animal …

Ultrasound Switchable Fluorescence Imaging Based On A Time Gated Iccd Camera, Shuai Yu Aug 2019

Ultrasound Switchable Fluorescence Imaging Based On A Time Gated Iccd Camera, Shuai Yu

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Ultrasound switchable fluorescence (USF) imaging has been proposed as a novel imaging modality which provides microscopic fluorescence imaging in centimeter-deep tissue. USF is possible to reveal many interesting phenomena such as microcirculation, tumor angiogenesis, and cancer metastasis and diagnose early-stage cancer. USF adopts a focused ultrasound (FU) to repetitively switch “on” fluorescent agents in tissue, and the USF photons scatter out and are captured by a detector. A USF image provides acoustic resolution and optical sensitivity. In USF, there are two key components: 1) an excellent USF contrast agent; and 2) a sensitive USF imaging system. The major challenge of …

Development Of An In Vitro Tbi Models And Validation Of Nanodelivery For Restoration Of Disrupted Brain Endothelium, Edidiong I. Inyang

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a serious concern among military personnel and their families. Although the mechanisms responsible for disruption to the brain are not well understood, the development of reliable diagnosis along with effective therapeutic treatment is urgently warranted. Recent findings suggest that shockwaves produced by a blast can generate micron-size bubbles that subsequently collapse in the brain tissue. The collapse of microbubbles (referred to as microcavitation) may compromise the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Moreover, addiction to the psycho-stimulant drugs (PSDs), e.g. cocaine and alcohol which are known to cause toxicity due to oxidative stress, can …

Landfilling is the most popular waste disposal system worldwide; however, with increasing scarcity of materials, increases in land values, and the presence of non-engineered landfill sites in both the developing and developed world, landfill mining has been the recipient of special interest in today’s waste management practices. Therefore, the motivation of the current study was to evaluate the energy potential of mined landfill waste and develop a statistically significant mathematical model to predict its energy potential (calorific value). The current study was conducted by using the municipal solid waste (MSW) samples collected from the City of Denton landfill and the …

Functional Analysis Of Nuclear-Encoded Mitochondrial Gene Duplicates With Testis-Biased Expression In Drosophila Melanogaster, Mohammadmehdi M. Eslamieh Aug 2019

Functional Analysis Of Nuclear-Encoded Mitochondrial Gene Duplicates With Testis-Biased Expression In Drosophila Melanogaster, Mohammadmehdi M. Eslamieh

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Most of the genes encoding proteins that function in the mitochondria are located in the nucleus and are called nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes (N-mt genes). In Drosophila melanogaster, most of the tissue-specific duplicated N-mt genes have acquired testis-biased expression. These genes appear to be older and relocated more often than other duplicated genes and have energy-related functions. These patterns reveal strong selection for the retention of new genes for male germline mitochondrial functions. Maternal inheritance of mitochondria and male-male competition for fertilization are two common forces that might drive changes in mitochondrial functions. We analyzed N-mt genes in the human genome …

Stress Responses Of Corals And Their Symbiotic Partners, Contessa A. Ricci Aug 2019

Stress Responses Of Corals And Their Symbiotic Partners, Contessa A. Ricci

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Disease and temperature are primary threats to coral persistence, and these stresses can work synergistically to accelerate coral declines. In the face of climate change, understanding the effects of these stresses is key to understanding ecosystem services of future reefs. Corals are an amalgam of the coral animal, an intracellular dinoflagellate symbiont (family Symbiodiniaceae), and a consortium of other symbiotic microbes that exist in the coral surface mucus layer. As such, it is important to consider the role of each component. It is also important to view any coral study through the lens of immunity, as the existence of these …

Faculty Publications

Mangroves are considered one of the most productive ecosystems in the world with significant contributions as carbon sinks in the biosphere. Yet few attempts have been made to assess global patterns in mangrove net primary productivity, except for a few assumptions relating litterfall rates to variation in latitude. We combined geophysical and climatic variables to predict mangrove litterfall rates at continental scale. On a per-area basis, carbon flux in litterfall in the neotropics is estimated at 5 MgC·ha−1·yr−1, between 20% and 50% higher than previous estimates. Annual carbon fixed in mangrove litterfall in the neotropics is …

Red maple (Acer rubrum), also known as swamp, water or soft maple, is endemic to eastern and central North America and was widely used as traditional medicine by the first peoples. Commercially, its well-known products include maple syrup and high-quality lumber. The potential medicinal benefits of phenolic compounds extracted from the red maple plant, such as glucitol-core containing gallotannins, include antioxidant, and antiglycation effects as well as their importance in cosmetic applications. Plant-derived proteins and peptides are important biomolecules; however to date, there is no published data on the identification of proteins/peptides from red maple leaves. Therefore, the …

Altering The Regiospecificity Of C6 Indole Prenyltransferase Enzymes Towards Drug Development, Ahmed R. Aoun Aug 2019

Altering The Regiospecificity Of C6 Indole Prenyltransferase Enzymes Towards Drug Development, Ahmed R. Aoun

Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses

Prenyltransferase (PT) biocatalysts are late-stage tailoring enzymes that modify natural products. PTs catalyze the attachment of prenyl moieties to natural product acceptors using pyrophosphate donors. This prenyl modification in small molecules leads to changes in structural and biological activities. Understanding the structural insights as well as the mechanisms by which PTs function allows us to utilize PTs as a unique approach towards drug development. PriB PT is an example of aromatic PTs that has been characterized previously as a L-tryptophan (L-Trp) C6 C-prenyltransferase (C6-C-PT). Analysis of PriB binding pocket, highlighted key residues that might play an important …

Cancer Cell Population Growth Kinetics At Low Densities Deviate From The Exponential Growth Model And Suggest An Allee Effect., Kaitlyn E Johnson, Grant Howard, William Mo, Michael K Strasser, Ernesto A B F Lima, Sui Huang, Amy Brock Aug 2019

Cancer Cell Population Growth Kinetics At Low Densities Deviate From The Exponential Growth Model And Suggest An Allee Effect., Kaitlyn E Johnson, Grant Howard, William Mo, Michael K Strasser, Ernesto A B F Lima, Sui Huang, Amy Brock

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Most models of cancer cell population expansion assume exponential growth kinetics at low cell densities, with deviations to account for observed slowing of growth rate only at higher densities due to limited resources such as space and nutrients. However, recent preclinical and clinical observations of tumor initiation or recurrence indicate the presence of tumor growth kinetics in which growth rates scale positively with cell numbers. These observations are analogous to the cooperative behavior of species in an ecosystem described by the ecological principle of the Allee effect. In preclinical and clinical models, however, tumor growth data are limited by the …

Sensory Primary Cilium Is A Distinct Signaling Compartment, Rinzhin Tshering Sherpa Aug 2019

Sensory Primary Cilium Is A Distinct Signaling Compartment, Rinzhin Tshering Sherpa

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

The primary cilium is a solitary cellular organelle that protrudes from the apical cell membrane. Findings on cilia-dependent mechanosenstation have shown that the primary cilium acts as a transducer of fluid-shear stress into intracellular signaling. Over recent years, studies in primary cilia have intensified after determining a causal relationship between dysfunctional primary cilia and cystic diseases. Along with its mechanosensory function, the primary cilium houses a variety of receptors, ion channels and transporter proteins. Studies in cilia biology have shown that primary cilia are coordinators of signaling pathways such as Hedgehog (Hh), Wnt, and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) pathways during …

Of the 1.8 billion people worldwide infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, 5–15% will develop active tuberculosis (TB). Approximately half will progress to active TB within the first 18 months after infection, presumably because they fail to mount an effective initial immune response. Here, in a genome-wide genetic study of early TB progression, we genotype 4002 active TB cases and their household contacts in Peru. We quantify genetic heritability hg2 of early TB progression to be 21.2% (standard error 0.08). This suggests TB progression has a strong genetic basis, and is comparable to traits with well-established genetic bases. We …

Violation Of Electrostatic Rules: Shifting Balance Between Pnicogen Bond And Lone Pair−Π Interaction Tuned By Substituents, Zongqing Chi, Tong Yan, Qing-Zhong Li, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Complexes were formed pairing ZCl3 (Z=P, As, Sb) with C2R4 (R= H, F, CN). The first interaction present is a pnicogen bond between the Z atom and the C=C π-bond. This bond weakens as the H atoms of ethylene are replaced by electron-withdrawing F and CN and the potential above the alkene switches from negative to positive. In the latter two cases, another set of noncovalent bonds is formed between the Cl lone pairs of ZCl3 and the π*(C=C) antibonding orbital, as well as with the F or CN substituents. The growing strength of these interactions, coupled with a large …

The Roles Of Long Noncoding Rnas In Inflammation And Immune Responses, Monira Obaid Aug 2019

The Roles Of Long Noncoding Rnas In Inflammation And Immune Responses, Monira Obaid

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Inflammation is an immune response that protects the human body from infection, illness, or injury. The inflammatory response causes the activation of immune cells, such as leukocyte subsets (i.e., monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, neutrophils, eosinophils and others), T cells, and B cells, and induces production of inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, chemokines, and antibodies to fight against injury or infection. Uncontrolled and continued inflammation drives the development of many human diseases, including metabolic diseases, obesity, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, neurological disorder and cancer. Indeed, the signaling process associated with inflammation and immune response is very complex. Our understanding of inflammation and …
