The Case For Revamping New Faculty Orientation: Integrating Case-Based Learning Into Faculty Onboarding., Mansoor Siddiqui, Dimitrios Papanagnou, Samantha Bruno, Karen Novielli
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
Introduction: New faculty orientation (NFO) for onboarding faculty members is replete with critical information and resources. Most NFO sessions are facilitated through lecture-based slide presentations. We employed a case-based learning (CBL) format to promote learner engagement through active use of the content being taught. We hypothesized that a CBL format would lead to improved learner satisfaction.
Methods: An inventory of topics presented at NFO was generated by reviewing previous orientation sessions. Cases and discussion questions were developed to link to specific content areas from previously delivered lectures. Participants were assigned cases with discussion questions, followed by a large-group debriefing. In …

Oligomerization And Viral Rna Regulation Of Antiviral Innate Immune Proteins, Cassie Marie Zerbe
Oligomerization And Viral Rna Regulation Of Antiviral Innate Immune Proteins, Cassie Marie Zerbe
Doctoral Dissertations
PKR is an important protein of the innate immune pathway that binds to viral dsRNA, resulting in dimerization-induced autophosphorylation. During viral infection, activated PKR blocks protein synthesis by phosphorylating eukaryotic initiation factor 2a (eIF2a). Epstein Barr virus-encoded RNA 1 (EBER1) and Adenovirus virus-associated RNA I (VAI), produced by Epstein Barr Virus and Adenovirus, respectively are non-coding, highly-structured RNAs that bind to PKR and have been characterized as inhibitors. Here we show that EBER1 weakly activates PKR in vitro, but VAI does not. Both RNAs bind two PKR monomers and promote PKR dimerization. We generated a low-resolution model of EBER1 …

Zea E-Books Collection
Odonates of Nebraska
The Nebraska odonate list has 109 species in two suborders, damselflies (Zygoptera) with 47 species and dragonflies (Anisoptera) with 62 species. Nebraska had been very poorly surveyed prior to 2005 and 63 counties had fewer than 10 records. By 2017 the number of county records had nearly quadrupled, to over 3000 records, the average county total had increased from 9 to 33 and all counties had at least 21 records. An effort was made to collect data more or less uniformly from all 93 Nebraska counties. The areas with intense corn and soybean farming, eastern and southcentral …
Design And Delivery Of Synthetic Mrna By A Peptide Nanoparticle, John H. Lockhart
Design And Delivery Of Synthetic Mrna By A Peptide Nanoparticle, John H. Lockhart
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The field of synthetic mRNA therapeutics is a rapidly expanding arm of gene therapies. The use of mRNA provides multiple benefits over viral or DNA vectors. synthetic mRNA vectors are immediately translated into protein after entering the cytoplasm of cells in contrast to DNA vectors that must first be transcribed to mRNA in the nucleus. This allows synthetic mRNA to produce a therapeutic protein in any cell type, including non-dividing cells. In addition, the non-replicative nature of mRNA means that insertional mutagenesis or generation of escape mutants is not a concern. However, the stimulation of innate immune responses by unmodified …

Culturally Affirmative Counseling With American Indians Who Are Deaf, Nancy M. Eldredge
Culturally Affirmative Counseling With American Indians Who Are Deaf, Nancy M. Eldredge
JADARA
American Indians who are deaf may exhibit a complex mix of cultural characteristics common to Indian, Deaf, and hearing Anglo society. The pressures of living with multicultural identities and the conflicts of competing cultural influences can exacerbate the difficulty of dealing with personal stress. Counselors without training in cross-cultural interventions may be unaware of important cultural differences affecting the counseling relationship, particularly the elements of cultural identity that tend to be shared by Deaf and Indian people. This paper explores the comparative cultural values of Deaf people, Indian groups, and the hearing Anglo society. The goal is to identify potential …
Louisiana 4-H Agents' Perceptions Of The 4-H Civic Engagement Mission Mandate, Xavier Bell
Louisiana 4-H Agents' Perceptions Of The 4-H Civic Engagement Mission Mandate, Xavier Bell
LSU Master's Theses
4-H, America’s largest youth development organization, allows “youth to engage in hands-on learning in areas such as health, science, agriculture, and civic engagement in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles” (National 4-H Council, n.d.) However, 4-H Agents are the gatekeepers to 4‑H programs because they lead educational and personal development programming that allow youth to grow and mature. As such, Louisiana 4-H Agents were the population (f=78) under study. As such, I analyzed 4-H Agents’ perceptions of the value they place on youth participating …
Silica And Siloxane Model Systems, Bruno Jakobi
Silica And Siloxane Model Systems, Bruno Jakobi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the development and synthesis of model system for the investigation of the morphology, interactions, and dynamics in linear and branched polymers and polymer nanocomposites. The materials are designed to reduce the number of uncontrolled parameters and to be ideally suitable for neutron scattering studies. Hereby, two main objectives are defined:
The first project is to develop model nanocomposites based on the grafting of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) to primary particles and well-defined aggregates. For that purpose, the functionalization of silica nanoparticles with a chlorosilane and the influence of moisture on the reaction was studied. Higher grafting densities than …
Characterization And Amplification Of Retrotransposable Elements Platy-1 And Alu In The Cebidae Lineage Of Platyrrhine Primates, Jessica Storer
Characterization And Amplification Of Retrotransposable Elements Platy-1 And Alu In The Cebidae Lineage Of Platyrrhine Primates, Jessica Storer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Alu mobile elements are much more than “junk DNA”. Inherent properties such as high copy number, small ~300 bp size, and their nearly homoplasy-free nature make these elements particularly useful in resolving primate phylogenies. In addition, shared sequence features and identity with the Alu element allow for discovery of new SINE retrotransposons, such as the Platyrrhine-limited Platy-1 element. Building on previous research of subfamily analysis, the Platy-1 and Alu elements can be used not only to explore the controversial New World monkey (NWM) phylogeny, but also the mode and tempo of their amplification in different primate genera and species.

Promise In Infant-Toddler Care And Education
Promise In Infant-Toddler Care And Education
Occasional Paper Series
This special themed issue of the Occasional Paper Series seeks to highlight and challenge assumptions about infant-toddler care and education. In the Call for Papers, we specifically asked for critical analyses of the state of the field; for contributions from practitioners, policy researchers and policymakers, teacher educators, and colleagues from international contexts to interrogate the status quo. We were not surprised, however, when the papers submitted, with one exception, came from university researchers or faculty working with students. Caregivers and teachers of the youngest children are overwhelmingly women, often with families of their own, with limited time, support, or incentives …

Chemical Process Safety In The Chemical Engineering Curriculum, Stephen J. Kmiotek
Chemical Process Safety In The Chemical Engineering Curriculum, Stephen J. Kmiotek
Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
In 2011, ABET modified its accreditation criteria for Chemical Engineering programs to include “….. the hazards associated with (chemical, physical and/or biological) processes.” The new criterion was added in large part because of continued serious process safety incidents within the chemical industry and, based on the incident investigations, an apparent lack of understanding of these hazards by chemical engineering graduates. ABET left it to universities to address how best to meet the criterion at their institutions. Despite resources provided by, for instance, the Center for Chemical Process Safety, it has proven a challenge to add significant new content to a …
Mmwave Radar Return For Characterization Of Burned Skin, Sean Korphi, Vincent Mei
Mmwave Radar Return For Characterization Of Burned Skin, Sean Korphi, Vincent Mei
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes techniques and systems directed to classifying skin injury using a radar propagation technique to measure the health of tissue below the surface of the skin. The millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency of the electromagnetic spectrum can be broadcast from an active sensor(s) (e.g., transmitting antenna(s)) on a computing device towards the skin of a person. The mmWaves penetrate the skin and reflectively scatter differently for various tissues and burn types due to changes in dielectric properties. Sensor(s) (e.g., receiving antenna(s)) on the computing device can sense the scattering of the mmWaves reflected by the skin and collect data for …

Ecology Center Publications
Aim: Species distributions are one of the most important ways to understand how communities interact through macroecological relationships. The functional abilities of a species, such as its plasticity in various environments, can determine its distribution and beta diversity patterns. In this study, we evaluate how functional traits influence the distribution of amphibians, and hypothesize which functional traits explain the current pattern of amphibian species composition in the Atlantic Forest.
Location: Atlantic Forest, Brazil.
Methods: Using potential distributions of Brazilian Atlantic Forest of amphibian species, we analysed the relative importance of abiotic factors and species functional traits in explaining species richness, …

The circadian system regulates daily rhythms of physiology and behavior. Although extraordinary advances have been made to elucidate the brain mechanisms underlying the circadian system in nocturnal species, less is known in diurnal species. Recent studies have shown that retinorecipient brain areas such as the intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) and olivary pretectal nucleus (OPT) are critical for the display of normal patterns of daily activity in diurnal grass rats (Arvicanthis niloticus). Specifically, grass rats with IGL and OPT lesions respond to light in similar ways to intact nocturnal animals. Importantly, both the IGL and OPT project to one another …
An Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Implementing Citizenship-Readiness Standards In The Elementary Social Studies Curriculum: A Case Study Of A School District In New Jersey, Dezoray Moore
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined how elementary schools prepared students to become lifelong learners as it relates to meeting citizenship readiness initiatives. Traditionally, schools use standardized assessments aligned with college- and career-readiness standards to measure student achievement in the reading, writing, and mathematics curricula. This study sought to examine alternative assessments aligned with citizenship-readiness standards to measure student achievement in the elementary social studies curriculum. A qualitative case study using five elementary school principals to obtain their perceptions of the elementary social studies curriculum was highlighted. An extensive analysis of common themes emerged concluding the need for educators to provide students with …
Compressive Sensing Inference Of Neuronal Network Connectivity In Balanced Neuronal Dynamics, Victor J. Barranca, D. Zhou
Compressive Sensing Inference Of Neuronal Network Connectivity In Balanced Neuronal Dynamics, Victor J. Barranca, D. Zhou
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
Determining the structure of a network is of central importance to understanding its function in both neuroscience and applied mathematics. However, recovering the structural connectivity of neuronal networks remains a fundamental challenge both theoretically and experimentally. While neuronal networks operate in certain dynamical regimes, which may influence their connectivity reconstruction, there is widespread experimental evidence of a balanced neuronal operating state in which strong excitatory and inhibitory inputs are dynamically adjusted such that neuronal voltages primarily remain near resting potential. Utilizing the dynamics of model neurons in such a balanced regime in conjunction with the ubiquitous sparse connectivity structure of …

Epidemiology Of Chronic Pain In Ukraine: Findings From The World Mental Health Survey, Anna Xu, Elizabeth Hilton, Riley Arkema, Nathan L. Tintle, Luralyn M. Helming
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Chronic pain can pose a serious challenge in everyday life for many individuals globally, especially in developing countries, but studies explicitly exploring risk factors of chronic pain beyond demographic characteristics using survey data have been scarce. To address this problem, this study analyzed World Health Organization data on chronic pain in Ukraine to explore demographic, psychological, and treatment perception-related risk factors to chronic pain. We replicated previous reports of older age, female sex, married status, inadequate financial resources, and comorbidity of other physical conditions as significant demographic risk factors for chronic pain diagnosis but not necessarily for severe pain. We …

What Are The Psychological Microfoundations Of Organisational Routines?, Piotr Tomasz Makowski
What Are The Psychological Microfoundations Of Organisational Routines?, Piotr Tomasz Makowski
European Management Studies
The study is a comprehensive introduction to the psychological version of the so-called microfoundational approach to routines. It focuses on the problem of how psychological micro-level phenomena and processes of individual actors affect the organisational macro-level of routines. More specifically, the study proposes to explain the sources of macro-level automatic stability and resourceful flexibility of routines by psychological habits and psychological flexibility. The approach presented in the study promises not only the level of detail that has not been present in extant investigations of routines research, but also a new account of the classic problem of the opposition between automaticity …
