Consequences Of Self-Interested Behavior: Pedagogical Questions And Dilemmas Relating To Cases Of A Closed Adoption And A Regional Landfill Proposal, J Forbes Farmer
Consequences Of Self-Interested Behavior: Pedagogical Questions And Dilemmas Relating To Cases Of A Closed Adoption And A Regional Landfill Proposal, J Forbes Farmer
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Abstract
The motive of self-interest is the driving factor behind many situations faced by those who have chosen the human services profession. In this article, the author provides two of his own fact-based human service cases (one involving case work and the psychological needs related to a closed adoption and one about community organization and advocacy related to a proposed regional landfill) that can be studied and debated in social work classes. The cases reflect the double identity of contemporary social work. The questions after each case require the students to reflect on and talk about the ramifications of self-interested …
Comparing Ocean Surface Boundary Vertical Mixing Schemes Including Langmuir Turbulence, Tetsu Hara, Et Al
Comparing Ocean Surface Boundary Vertical Mixing Schemes Including Langmuir Turbulence, Tetsu Hara, Et Al
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Six recent Langmuir turbulence parameterization schemes and five traditional schemes are implemented in a common single‐column modeling framework and consistently compared. These schemes are tested in scenarios versus matched large eddy simulations, across the globe with realistic forcing (JRA55‐do, WAVEWATCH‐III simulated waves) and initial conditions (Argo), and under realistic conditions as observed at ocean moorings. Traditional non‐Langmuir schemes systematically underpredict large eddy simulation vertical mixing under weak convective forcing, while Langmuir schemes vary in accuracy. Under global, realistic forcing Langmuir schemes produce 6% (−1% to 14% for 90% confidence) or 5.2 m (−0.2 m to 17.4 m for 90% confidence) …

Metabolic Syndrome Associates With Ischemic Heart Disease: Cross Sectional Study In Al-Hussein Teaching Hospital, Hhassan Abdul Amir Al-Daghir
Metabolic Syndrome Associates With Ischemic Heart Disease: Cross Sectional Study In Al-Hussein Teaching Hospital, Hhassan Abdul Amir Al-Daghir
Muthanna Medical Journal
We tried to verify the incidence of metabolic syndrome in cases which are admitted into coronary care unit, their most common presentations and how to deal with so as to reduce squeals and to decrease incidence of recurrence. We studied our cases by gender, age groups, presentation (whether unstable angina or myocardial infarction), sudden cardiac death, sleep apnea, serum uric acid, smoking, socioeconomic status, lipodystrophy, poly cystic ovaries, peripheral arterial disease, stroke, family history, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and lipid profile. We found 150 out of 250 cases studied (60%) fulfilling criteria of metabolic syndrome according to European society of cardiology, …
Case-Based Asynchronous Interactive Modules In Undergraduate Medical Education., Tatiana Villatoro, Katherine Lackritz, Joanna S Y Chan
Case-Based Asynchronous Interactive Modules In Undergraduate Medical Education., Tatiana Villatoro, Katherine Lackritz, Joanna S Y Chan
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Undergraduate medical education traditionally consists of 2 years of lecture-based courses followed by 2 years of clinical clerkships. However, over the past couple decades, undergraduate medical education has been evolving toward non-lecture-based integrated curriculums, requiring a collaborative curriculum. Additionally, e-learning platforms have become efficacious and essential to delivering education asynchronously to students. At Thomas Jefferson University, the Pathology and Obstetrics and Gynecology departments collaborated to create a pilot series of case-based asynchronous interactive modules to teach gynecologic pathology in a clinical context, while interweaving other educational components, such as evidence-based medicine, clinical skills, and basic sciences. The case-based asynchronous interactive …
Social Proximity In Dairy Calves Is Affected By Differences In Pessimism, B Lecorps, S Kappel, Dm Weary, Mag Von Keyserlingk
Social Proximity In Dairy Calves Is Affected By Differences In Pessimism, B Lecorps, S Kappel, Dm Weary, Mag Von Keyserlingk
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Negative social interactions have been extensively studied in dairy cattle, but little is known about the establishment of positive (preferential) relationships. Adult dairy cows are known to spend more time at close proximity to specific social partners, indicating that they establish stronger bonds with these animals, but few studies have explored what happens in socially housed calves. In this study, we explored whether calves that spent their entire life in the same social group established social preferences (i.e. pairs of individuals that interact more) that are stable over time (two 48-h periods, separated by three days), across two types of …

How The Medical Model Has Influenced United Nations Policies On Refugees With Disabilities, Isabelle E. Hoagland
How The Medical Model Has Influenced United Nations Policies On Refugees With Disabilities, Isabelle E. Hoagland
International Journal on Responsibility
Medical model perspectives have consistently influenced United Nations policies regarding disability, particularly in terms of refugees with disabilities. Refugees with disabilities are classified in the same category as refugees with medical needs, giving them an unequal chance of being resettled into a third country. Although the United Nations has moved away from medical model rhetoric in the past 15 years, this has not yet proven to have translated into resettlement policy for refugees with disabilities. This paper analyzes how the United Nations has shifted from a medical model of disability to a social model in various declarations, resolutions, and policies, …

Chlorophyll A And Primary Productivity Dynamics In Kentucky Lake Mainstem And Embayment Habitats., Morgan Franklin
Chlorophyll A And Primary Productivity Dynamics In Kentucky Lake Mainstem And Embayment Habitats., Morgan Franklin
Scholars Week
Chlorophyll α (Chl α) has been used as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, while primary productivity (PP), the rate at which carbon is fixed into phytoplankton cells, is an indicator of how quickly carbon is turned over within the phytoplankton community. The purpose of this research was to examine the spatial distribution of and the relationship between Chl α and PP seasonally in the main channel of Kentucky Lake reservoir and two embayments of contrasting land use. Correlation coefficients (r) for Chl α versus PP were 0.45 in Ledbetter embayment, 0.55 in Panther embayment, and 0.57 in the main …

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Offshore Wind Power And Its Values Along The Central California Coast, Yi-Hui Wang, Ryan K. Walter, Crow White, Matthew D. Kehrli, Stephen F. Hamilton, Patrick H. Soper, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg
Physics
The analysis of the spatiotemporal variability of wind power remains limited during the planning stage of an offshore wind farm. This study provides a framework to investigate how offshore wind power varies along the Central California Coast over diurnal and seasonal time scales, which is critical for reliability and functionality of the grid system. We find that offshore wind power in this region peaks during evening hours across all seasons and maximizes in spring and summer. The timing of peak offshore wind power production better aligns with that of peak demand across California than solar and land-based wind power production, …
