Racial Stratification In Self-Rated Health Among Black Mexicans And White Mexicans, Guadalupe Marquez-Velarde, Nicole E. Jones, Verna M. Keith Oct 2019

Racial Stratification In Self-Rated Health Among Black Mexicans And White Mexicans, Guadalupe Marquez-Velarde, Nicole E. Jones, Verna M. Keith

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

How do Mexicans of distinct racial backgrounds fit into the recognized patterns of racial health disparities? We conduct regression analyses using data from the 2000-2017 National Health Interview Survey to determine if Mexicans who self-identify as White or Black have a relative advantage or disadvantage in self-rated health in relation to Non-Hispanic (NH) Whites and Blacks in the U.S. Our results indicate that both Black Mexicans and White Mexicans have a significant disadvantage in relation to NH-Whites while White Mexicans have a slight advantage in relation to both NH-Blacks and Black Mexicans. Overall, our results suggest that studying health outcomes …

An Uncultivated Virus Infecting A Symbiotic Nanoarchaeota In The Hot Springs Of Yellowstone National Park, Jacob H. Munson-Mcgee, Colleen Rooney, Mark J. Young

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Nanoarchaeota are small cells with reduced genomes that are found attached to and dependent on a second archaeal cell for their growth and replication. Initially found in marine hydrothermal environments and subsequently in terrestrial geothermal hot springs, the Nanoarchaeota species that have been described are obligate ectobionts, each with a different host species. However, no viruses have been described that infect the Nanoarchaeota. Here we identify a virus infecting Nanoarchaeota using a combination of viral metagenomic and bioinformatic approaches. This virus, tentatively named Nanoarchaeota Virus 1 (NAV1), consists of a 35.6kb circular DNA genome encoding for 52 proteins. We …

Full Circle: A Qualitative And Art-Informed Investigation Into The Experience Of Midlife Transition For Female Art Therapists, Sharon Marianetti-Leeper Oct 2019

Full Circle: A Qualitative And Art-Informed Investigation Into The Experience Of Midlife Transition For Female Art Therapists, Sharon Marianetti-Leeper

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Midlife for women comprises the ages of roughly 40 to 65 years and is potentially a time of great developmental change. This qualitative and arts-informed study sought to explore the experiences of midlife transition for seven female art therapists who fell within the midlife age range. Participants were asked to create a mandala (circular art piece) for each of six midlife domains: physical/biological, emotional, social-relational, spiritual, intellectual/psychological, and sociocultural. Participants also created one-page artist statements about each mandala and engaged in a telephone interview with the researcher about the artmaking process. Thematic analysis of the written and transcribed data …

Relationships Between Social Determinants Of Health And Patient Readmissions To An Acute Care Hospital Within 30 Days Of Discharge, Wren Mosee Lester Oct 2019

Relationships Between Social Determinants Of Health And Patient Readmissions To An Acute Care Hospital Within 30 Days Of Discharge, Wren Mosee Lester

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: The Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) is a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which addresses the cost and quality of health care. The HRRP and policy penalizes hospitals for excessive readmission rates. The overall purpose of the program is to improve the quality of care, reduce costs and improve operational efficiency in hospitals. (Zhang, 2014).

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify and examine what social determinants of health, at an individual level and community level, were associated with the likelihood of being readmitted into the hospital, within 30 days of discharge, for patients …

Influence Of Two Varieties Of Broad Bean And Beauveria Bassiana (Blas) On Aphis Fabae Scop. Under Field Conditions, Zayoor Z. Omer, Tavga S. Rashid, Hayman Kakakhan Awla

Polytechnic Journal

Black bean aphid (Aphis fabae scop.), belongs to order Hemiptera and family Aphididae, is one of the important pests of the Fabaceae family. Beauveria bassiana is an important biocontrol agent to replace chemical insecticides. Therefore, in this research, two different varieties of broad bean with three different concentrations of B. bassiana were investigated on adults of fabae aphids under field conditions. After 3, 5, 7, and 14 days, the effect of the B. bassiana on the population of aphids was measured. The local variety was found to be more sensitive to the aphids compare with the Spain variety. In the …

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Background: The problem of access to medical information, particularly in low-income countries, has been under discussion for many years. Although a number of developments have occurred in the last decade (e.g., the open access (OA) movement and the website Sci-Hub), everyone agrees that these difficulties still persist very widely, mainly due to the fact that paywalls still limit access to approximately 75% of scholarly documents. In this study, we compare the accessibility of recent full text articles in the field of ophthalmology in 27 established institutions located worldwide.

Methods: A total of 200 references from articles were retrieved using the …

Wolpert, Caezaan Keshvani, Xiaobo Lui, Susan E. Bergeson, Srivatsan Kidambi, Lenin Mahimainathan, George I. Henderson, Madhusudhanan Narasimhan

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

NRF2 is a redox-sensitive transcription factor that depending on the duration or magnitude of the stress, either translocates to the nucleus (beneficial) or is degraded in the cytosol (harmful). However, the role of NRF2-based mechanism(s) under ethanol (E)-induced developmental toxicity in the placental context remains unknown. Here, we used a rat prenatal model of maternal alcohol stress consisting of intermittent ethanol vapor (IEV) daily from GD11 to GD20 with a 6 h ON/18 h OFF in a vapor chamber and in vitro placental model consisting of HTR-8 trophoblasts exposed to 86 mM of E for either 24 h or 48 …

A Humanitarian Obligation To Educate Nurses In Disaster Response, Janice S. Smith, Kathleen V. Eid-Heberle Oct 2019

A Humanitarian Obligation To Educate Nurses In Disaster Response, Janice S. Smith, Kathleen V. Eid-Heberle

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Nurses possess a humanitarian drive to respond to disasters. However, nursing education does not always include disaster content in the curricula, thereby limiting nurses' knowledge of disasters response. Requiring evidence-based disaster education in nursing programs contributes to nurses responding for their employers or volunteer partners such as the Red Cross.

Integrating Disaster Preparedness And Response Training Into The Bsn Curriculum, Glenn A. Barnes, Martin Mufich, Debra A. Danforth Oct 2019

Integrating Disaster Preparedness And Response Training Into The Bsn Curriculum, Glenn A. Barnes, Martin Mufich, Debra A. Danforth

Biennial Convention (CONV)

The AACN and ANA as well as other nursing organizations recognize that Disaster Preparedness and Response is a part of nursing practice. Unfortunately schools of nursing are not trained or equipped for this type of training. Two Texas University schools of nursing have implemented programs to correct this.
