The Use Of Dhea In The Treatment Of Depression, Bryan Tipton
The Use Of Dhea In The Treatment Of Depression, Bryan Tipton
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfated ester (DHEA-S) are important pre-hormones that also have direct neurohormonal effects on the central nervous system. Over the last twenty years, data have revealed that serum DHEA peaks in a person’s mid-20s and steadily declines throughout their lifetime. In addition, women tend to have lower values than men. This is of note because lower serum values tend to be correlated with increased risk of depression, worse depressive symptoms, and increased risk of relapse into depression. A review of literature concerning DHEA’s age related values, its association with depression, and its use in the treatment of …

Another Ignatian History: Including Women In The Story Of Jesuit Mission, Julia A. Dowd
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Orientation programs at Jesuit universities often include a review of the life of Ignatius. What is missing from the official history of Ignatius are the stories of the women with whom he lived and worked who contributed financially, politically, and emotionally to Ignatius’ formation and that of the early Jesuits. What is also missing is a critical feminist analysis of the historical context out of which Ignatius, the Spiritual Exercises and the Society of Jesus were born. In this article, I argue that women provided essential scaffolding to bolster Ignatius’ identity and vocation, and likewise to contribute to the early …

Tumor immune escape is an important strategy of tumor survival. There are many mechanisms of tumor immune escape, including immunosuppression, which has become a research hotspot in recent years. The programmed death ligand-1/programmed death-1 (PD-L1/PD-1) signaling pathway is an important component of tumor immunosuppression, which can inhibit the activation of T lymphocytes and enhance the immune tolerance of tumor cells, thereby achieving tumor immune escape. Therefore, targeting the PD-L1/PD-1 pathway is an attractive strategy for cancer treatment; however, the therapeutic effectiveness of PD-L1/PD-1 remains poor. This situation requires gaining a deeper understanding of the complex and varied molecular mechanisms and …

Exploring The Efficacy Of Natural Products In Alleviating Alzheimer’S Disease Using Animal Models, Prajakta Deshpande, Neha Gogia, Amit Singh
Exploring The Efficacy Of Natural Products In Alleviating Alzheimer’S Disease Using Animal Models, Prajakta Deshpande, Neha Gogia, Amit Singh
Biology Faculty Publications
Alzheimer’s disease (hereafter AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the central nervous system. There are multiple factors that cause AD, viz., accumulation of extracellular Amyloid-beta 42 plaques, intracellular hyper-phosphorylated Tau tangles, generation of reactive oxygen species due to mitochondrial dysfunction and genetic mutations. The plaques and tau tangles trigger aberrant signaling, which eventually cause cell death of the neurons. As a result, there is shrinkage of brain, cognitive defects, behavioral and psychological problems. To date, there is no direct cure for AD. Thus, scientists have been testing various strategies like screening for the small inhibitor molecule library …
Molecular Role Of Angiopoietin-Like 4'S Carboxy-Terminal Domain In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Progression, Crissy L. Tarver
Molecular Role Of Angiopoietin-Like 4'S Carboxy-Terminal Domain In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Progression, Crissy L. Tarver
Dissertations
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) represents 85% of pancreatic cancers. With early stage diagnosis, PDAC has a relative five-year survival rate of 34% but drops to 3% with metastasis. There is a lack of distinct symptoms and dependable biomarkers which delays diagnosis, leading to poor prognosis. Angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4) protein has been indicated in the progression of several types of aggressive cancer. ANGPTL4 is natively present in two fragments, an amino-terminus coiled-coil domain (nANGPTL4) and a carboxy-terminus fibrinogen-like domain (cANGPTL4), which have demonstrated diverse biological functions. Biochemical studies have been performed but a full structural understanding of functions and interactions is …
Analytical Aeroelastic Models For Chordwise And Spanwise Flexible Flapping Wings In Forward Flight, Deepa Kodali
Analytical Aeroelastic Models For Chordwise And Spanwise Flexible Flapping Wings In Forward Flight, Deepa Kodali
Dissertations
Animal wings deform significantly during flight. However, the aerodynamic features of flexible wings interacting with the surrounding fluid have not been adequately explored. One of the main challenges in predicting aerodynamic forces is that the wing shape and motion are a priori unknown. In this dissertation, two-way coupled analytical fluid-structure interaction models for chordwise and spanwise flexible flapping wings in forward flight are derived. The unsteady aeroelasticity is modeled with the Euler-Bernoulli beam and Theodorsen equations under the small deformation assumption. The two-way coupling for a chordwise flexible airfoil is realized by considering the trailing-edge deformation relative to the leading-edge …
New Materialism: An Ontology For The Anthropocene, Melinda Harm Benson
New Materialism: An Ontology For The Anthropocene, Melinda Harm Benson
Natural Resources Journal
This article argues that the Anthropocene is not simply a new geologic epoch; it is an opportunity to embrace a new ontology. In it, we can reconfigure our orientation to the material world. The current, dominant ontology casts humans as villains responsible for mass extinctions, polluted oceans, and climate change. This ontology reinforces a familiar binary—one in which humans are separate from and doing things to nature. Humans are ruining the planet, causing it to fundamentally change in ways that are not “natural” precisely because humans are the agent of change. This view is perhaps best described by environmentalist Bill …
2018 State Legislative Review, Emma Therrien
2018 State Legislative Review, Emma Therrien
Animal Law Review
There were several important changes to animal protection in the United States in 2018. California became the first state to ban cosmetic testing on animals and also made improvements for a handful of species used in factory farming. Prop 12 was passed, increasing minimum size standards for these species, but the most drastic change was the banning of eggs produced by egg-laying hens housed in cages—effectively prohibiting the use of cages for these birds in the state and the sale of eggs from producers that use cages in production facilities out of state. Florida and New Jersey made influential advancements …

Mixture Of Medium Chain Fatty Acids For Protein Precipitation In Purification Process Of Equine Anti-Rabies Immunoglobulin As F(Ab′)2, Sirisak Sathorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Besides the widely used caprylic acid (C8) as protein precipitating agent, capric acid (C10) and lauric acid (C12) were investigated as alternative medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) for their capabilities on protein purification. The optimization process conducted with normal bovine plasma as a model antibody demonstrated the essential effect of temperature during filtration to significantly reduce the content of albumin, a contaminant marker, compared with filtration at room temperature (p<0.05). From SDS-PAGE analysis, the optimal concentrations of 3% C8 and 5% C10 increased IgG purity from 30.2% to 94.6% and 80.4%, respectively. Interestingly, precipitation by C10 provided the lowest turbidity of filtrates. Purification by C12 showed unsatisfied results that albumin content was minutely decreased when increasing C12 concentration. C8 and C10 were then variously combined into 2 levels of 3% and 5% binary mixture for plasma purification. The synergist effect of C8 and C10 mixtures was clearly demonstrated in albumin elimination that the purity of fractionates were increased to 95%. Moreover, binary mixtures with higher concentration of C10 improved the filtration velocity in plasma model. Selected C8:C10 mixtures were then applied for both ERIG-IgG and ERIG-F(ab′)2 purification. SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed the absence of albumin protein in all purified samples. For ERIG-IgG purification, C8:C10 mixture at ratio 1.5:3.5 demonstrated the best in homogeneity with high recovery rate of bioactive antibody, while the mixtures at 2.25:0.75 showed the best purification capabilities to obtain highly purified ERIG-F(ab′)2. Furthermore, the purification by C8:C10 mixtures displayed superior process characteristic than the commercially non-chromatographic technique for ERIGF(ab′)2 purification in terms of antibody recovery, purity and lower in aggregate formation. The novelty on beneficial use of MCFA mixture as protein precipitating agent for antibody purification has been demonstrated.

Ovipositional Choices On Host Plants And Larval Development Of Tawny Coster Acraea Terpsicore (Linnaeus, 1758), Chitsanuphong Phanthian
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Acraea terpsicore (Linnaeus, 1758) is a common butterfly in Thailand that utilizes Passiflora plants. Due to urbanization and globalization, many Passiflora exotic plants have been introduced to Thailand, and these Passiflora plants may affect the preferences of A. terpsicore. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the ovipositional preferences of adult female A. terpsicore and to compare the larval host plant preferences and performance on different Passiflora plants. Four Passiflora species, Passiflora foetida (a wild plant), P. edulis (a fruit crop plants), P. x alata-caerulea and P. x coccinea-caerulea (both ornamental plants), had been compared in both field and laboratory experiments …
Esterification Of Lignin As Carbon Fiber Production Precursor, Jarudech Rakphong
Esterification Of Lignin As Carbon Fiber Production Precursor, Jarudech Rakphong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research investigated the optimized condition (i.e., esterifying agent, reaction time, reaction temperature) to modify lignin for utilization as a precursor in carbon fiber production. The lignin was successfully modified by esterification reaction in dimethylformamide solvent under different reaction temperatures and times using different types of fatty acid chloride including butyryl chloride, octanoyl chloride, and lauroyl chloride as an esterifying agent. The effects of fatty acid chloride chain length and degree of substitution on the chemical structure, functional groups, morphology, crystallinity, thermal properties, and solubility of esterified-lignin were studied. The chemical structure of the obtained product was characterized by FTIR …

Effects Of Hydrogen Synthesis Inhibition On Changes Of Bioproduct Contents In Cyanobacterium Synechocystis Sp. Pcc 6803, Nannaphat Sukkasam
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cyanobacteria have an ability to convert carbon dioxide and solar light to bioproducts. Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is the laboratory model strain of cyanobacteria with known metabolism and biochemistry. NADPH is one of the essential electron carriers and coenzymes required for various cellular metabolism including the production of bioproducts. [NiFe]-Hydrogenase consumes NADPH to produce hydrogen gas which considerably the loss of metabolic energy. Thus, the elimination of [NiFe]-hydrogenase would increase NADPH level in the cell and might increase the accumulation of bioproducts. In this work, hoxY and hoxH genes (encoding the two catalysis subunits of [NiFe]-hydrogenase) were inactivated. The inactivation …

A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study Of Counselors' Preparedness To Counsel Refugees, Shadin Riem Atiyeh
A Constructivist Grounded Theory Study Of Counselors' Preparedness To Counsel Refugees, Shadin Riem Atiyeh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A gap exists in the current literature on the training needs of professional counselors so they can meet the increasing demand for counseling services among refugee populations. The purpose of this constructivist, grounded theory study was to explore the perceptions of professional counselors related to their preparedness to demonstrate multicultural competence when counseling refugees. A constructivist grounded theory approach following Charmaz's principles guided the investigation into perceptions of professional counselors towards counseling with refugee clients. The author conducted a qualitative demographic form, individual interviews, and a focus group with professional counselors who had experience working with refugees. Sample included 21 …
Religious Coping And Ptsd Symptom Management Among African Americans: A Clergy Perspective, Barbra Talley
Religious Coping And Ptsd Symptom Management Among African Americans: A Clergy Perspective, Barbra Talley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Data indicated that although African Americans reported fewer occurrences of traumatic events than that of their racial/ethnic counterparts, however, the degree of traumatic events experienced by African Americans tends to be more serious and violent in nature. More so, lower recovery outcomes associated with PTSD among African Americans have been attributed to varying factors, such as financial restrictions, strained health care access, ineffective coping strategies as well as a mistrust of medical and clinical approaches, thus leading African Americans to seek faith-based approaches. This phenomenological study investigated clergy perspectives on religious coping constructs relative to the management of PTSD symptoms. …
The Relationship Between Methods Of Calculating The Ahi And Daytime Sleepiness, Severity Of Sleep Apnea, And Cpap Pressure Settings, Kathryn J. Kane
The Relationship Between Methods Of Calculating The Ahi And Daytime Sleepiness, Severity Of Sleep Apnea, And Cpap Pressure Settings, Kathryn J. Kane
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sleep apnea impacts one's mental and physical health, and has social consequences which affect all of society. Not only is there is a weak correlation between the severity of sleep apnea and daytime sleepiness as reported on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), but there is also a weak correlation between the severity of sleep apnea and prescribed treatment as indicated by 95th percentile pressure on a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. This poses difficulty for providers as well as patients throughout screening and treatment. The purpose of this study was to use a biopsychosocial approach to perform a within-subjects …

“Canst Thou By Searching Find Out God?”: On General Revelation And Adventist Theology, Glauber S. Araújo
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
Without God’s revelation in time and space, humanity would be utterly lost as to who He is, what His will is, or even if He exists. Morality would be completely alien to us and life would probably resume itself to the daily routine of looking after one’s own needs. Thankfully, God is a relational Being and from the moment He created mankind He began imparting knowledge about Himself, His actions and His thoughts. Through direct contact (Gen. 3:8; Exod. 33:11; Num. 12:8), visions (Num. 12:6), dreams (Gen. 28:12; Matt. 1:20), theophanies (Gen. 18:1-2, 13-14), angels (Num. 22:31-35), Urim and the …
A God Who Sees And Hears The “Other”: Hagar’S Theophany As An Illustration Of The Lord’S Benevolence Toward Those Outside The Covenant, Daniel Royo
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
There is no more pivotal, defining, and foundational figure among the world’s monotheists than Abraham.1 All three major monotheistic religions assert their ancestral linkage to him.2 “Despite countless revolutions in the history of ideas, Abraham remains a defining figure for half the world’s believers.”3 The Hebrew Bible focuses on Abraham’s descendants through Isaac and Jacob who become known as the Children of Israel. The Christian faith sprang from Judaism with the claim that Jesus of Nazareth was the long-awaited Jewish Messiah, and the fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham that through his progeny all the nations of the earth …

This book was created to assist students with their understanding of how science occurs in Florida. When teaching science or any subject it’s important to remember to begin with the concrete and then move to the abstract. I have found that it has helped my students when I begin by teaching science concepts in a concrete manner and expand from there. For example, when I taught about topographic maps, the students were much more successful in their learning when I started with local topographic maps that included the school and the surrounding area than with places that had mountains or …

Landscape conservation science and practice has increasingly embraced a “people and nature” paradigm that recognizes the dynamic complexity and bidirectional relationships in social-ecological systems. Conservation research remains heavily biased toward the ecological dimensions of conservation, with socially focused research taking up a relatively small fraction. The digital revolution and accompanying geospatial web inspired platforms and methods that provide a significant opportunity for closing this divide. This article focuses on potential contributions to conservation science and practices from one such integrative platform—interactive deep maps and their resulting spatial narratives— that digitally combine the qualitative and experiential essence(s) of place with the …

University of New Hampshire, December 2019
Often, the term “insane asylum,” invokes a macabre image of a crowded, outdated institution that does not so much care for its patients as secludes them from society. This popularized notion about care for the mentally ill in the many decades before contemporary medicine, is, as often times is the case, based in both fact and fiction. Institutional demands, such as overcrowding, forced many asylum administrators to …
