Using Spatial Regression To Model Potentially Toxic Metal (Ptm) Mobility Based On Physicochemical Soil Properties, Melissa A. Magno, Arpita Nandi, Ingrid E. Luffman
ETSU Faculty Works
Mining processes generate waste rock, tailings, and slag that can increase potentially toxic metal (PTM) concentrations in soils. Un-reclaimed, abandoned mine sites are particularly prone to leaching these contaminants, which may accumulate and pose significant environmental and public health concerns. The characterization and spatial delineation of PTMs in soils is vital for risk assessment and soil reclamation. Bumpus Cove, a once active mining district of eastern Tennessee, is home to at least 47 abandoned, un-reclaimed mines, all permanently closed by the 1950s. This study evaluated soil physicochemical properties, determined the spatial extent of PTMs (Zn, Mn, Cu, Pb, and Cd), …

The Mark Of The Japanese Murrelet (Synthliboramphus Wumizusume): A Study Of Song And Stewardship In Japan’S Inland Sea, Charlotte Hyde
Pomona Senior Theses
The Japanese Crested Murrelet Synthliboramphus wumizusume occupies a limited range in Southern Korea and Japan and is considered vulnerable by the IUCN. There is strong indication of a colony of Japanese Murrelets located in Kaminoseki, Japan; however, no nests or individuals have yet been found. The is also evidence that murrelets make use of this habitat during their vulnerable autumnal molting season during which they cannot fly. This habitat is threatened by the construction of a nuclear power plant in Tanoura Bay. Construction of this plant would result in loss of nesting sites, food supply, and other components vital to …
Interactions Between Inflammation And Female Sexual Desire And Arousal Function, Tierney K. Lorenz
Interactions Between Inflammation And Female Sexual Desire And Arousal Function, Tierney K. Lorenz
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Purpose of Review—To describe the current state of research on interactions between inflammation and female sexual function.
Recent findings—Inflammation may interfere with female sexual desire and arousal via direct (neural) and indirect (endocrine, vascular, social/behavioral) pathways. There are significant sex differences in the effect of inflammation on sexual function, arising from different evolutionary selection pressures on regulation of reproduction. A variety of inflammation-related conditions are associated with risk of female sexual dysfunction, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and chronic pain.
Summary—Clinical implications include the need for routine assessment for sexual dysfunction in patients with inflammation-related conditions, the potential for anti-inflammatory …
Verbal Descriptions Of Cue Direction Affect Object Desirability, Jason Tipples, Mike Dodd, Jordan Grubaugh, Alan Kingstone
Verbal Descriptions Of Cue Direction Affect Object Desirability, Jason Tipples, Mike Dodd, Jordan Grubaugh, Alan Kingstone
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Approach-avoidance behaviors are observed across a broad range of species. For humans, we tend move toward things we like, and away from things we dislike. Previous research tested whether repeatedly shifting visuo-spatial attention toward an object in response to eye gaze cues can increase liking for that object. Here, we tested whether a gaze-liking effect can occur for verbal descriptions of looking behavior without shifts of attention. Also, we tested the gaze specificity hypothesis – that the liking effect is specific to gaze cues – by comparing the effect of different types of cue (pointing gestures and arrow cues). In …

Faculty and Student Publications
© 2019. Published by The Company of Biologists Ltd A fundamental question in cognitive science is whether an animal can use a cognitive map. A cognitive map is a mental representation of the external world, and knowledge of one’s place in this world, that can be used to determine efficient routes to any destination. Many birds and mammals are known to employ a cognitive map, but whether other vertebrates can create a cognitive map is less clear. Amphibians are capable of using beacons, gradients and landmarks when navigating, and many are proficient at homing. Yet only one prior study directly …

Hackett, Gregory A. Kopp, Gareth Morgan, Christopher G. Guglielmo, Roi Gurka
Physics and Engineering Science
The mechanisms associated with the ability of owls to fly silently have been the subject of scientific interest for many decades and may be relevant to bioinspired design to reduce noise of flapping and nonflapping flying devices. Here, we characterize the near wake dynamics and the associated flow structures produced during flight of the Australian boobook owl (Ninox boobook). Three individual owls were flown at 8 ms-1 in a climatic avian wind tunnel. The velocity field in the wake was sampled at 500 Hz using long-duration high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV) while the wing kinematics were imaged simultaneously using high …
Legal Conceptions Of Parenthood: Adoptive Parents As Stewards, Ashlyn Edwards
Legal Conceptions Of Parenthood: Adoptive Parents As Stewards, Ashlyn Edwards
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
In this paper, I outline common conceptions of parenthood and assess the strengths and weaknesses of these models, including the proprietarian, consent, causal, and stewardship models. In what follows, each type of parenthood is evaluated for 1) its description of how a parent comes to be or 2) its normative claims about how a parent should act in regard to their child throughout the child’s life. After weighing the strengths and weaknesses of each conception, I conclude that the stewardship view is the most successful conception of parenthood not only because of its description of what makes a parent a …

Malignant Mesothelioma (MM) is a rare and highly aggressive cancer that develops from mesothelial cells lining the pleura and other internal cavities, and is often associated with asbestos exposure. To date, no effective treatments have been made available for this pathology. Herein, we propose a novel immunotherapeutic approach based on a unique vaccine targeting a series of antigens that we found expressed in different MM tumors, but largely undetectable in normal tissues. This vaccine, that we term p-Tvax, is comprised of a series of immunogenic peptides presented by both MHC-I and -II to generate robust immune responses. The peptides were …

A Genome Wide Survey Of The Insertion Sequences In Halanaerobium Hydrogeniformans, A Haloalkaliphilic Anaerobic Bacterium, Kody Austin Bassett
Masters Theses
"Insertion sequences (IS) are the smallest prokaryotic transposable elements. These mobile genes are highly diverse in size and structure, making them difficult to study. The transposition activity of insertion sequences has a significant role in evolution by enabling genomic plasticity via genome rearrangements. Insertion sequences are largely uncharacterized and thus methods to improve the ability to accurately identify, annotate, and infer genomic impact of insertion sequences is limited. A sequential set of methods using readily available genomic and bioinformatic tools was developed to accurately identify insertion sequences. This method was used to perform an entire genome survey of Halanaerobium hydrogeniformans …
Evaluation Of Naturally Occurring And Anthropogenic Contamination In Missouri Streams, Christina Jane Sehrt
Evaluation Of Naturally Occurring And Anthropogenic Contamination In Missouri Streams, Christina Jane Sehrt
Masters Theses
"The goal of this study is to observe the values and variability of water quality parameters and benthic macroinvertebrates in watersheds with very little anthropogenic impact and to compare these values with those acquired in watersheds with more anthropogenic impact. The following five HUC 12-digit watersheds had very little anthropogenic impact and were considered "pristine": Rogers Creek, Mill Creek, Middle West Fork-Black River, Bee Fork, and Ottery Creek. Five largely urban sub-basins were also considered; these basins are: Grand Glaize Creek, Glaize Creek, Sugar Creek, Hominy Creek, and Grindstone Creek. For each watershed, both water quality parameters and benthic macroinvertebrates …
Using The Ert Method To Differentiate Resistivity Anomalies Attributed To Natural And Man-Made Activities, Ibrahim Faisal Alshareef
Using The Ert Method To Differentiate Resistivity Anomalies Attributed To Natural And Man-Made Activities, Ibrahim Faisal Alshareef
Masters Theses
"Karst terrain is considered to be a very complex topography compared with most other geological environments. Many features can be observed such as sinkholes, air-filled cavities, losing streams, and solution widened joints. These karst features can cause subsidence and damage infrastructure such as buildings and roads thus causing economic hardship and disruption of life. The typical geological and hydrological studies are not enough to understand the karst processes.
For this reason, two geophysical methods were involved in investigating the subsurface in the study area. In this research, the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) data …
Advanced Techniques For Improving Canonical Genetic Programming, Adam Tyler Harter
Advanced Techniques For Improving Canonical Genetic Programming, Adam Tyler Harter
Masters Theses
"Genetic Programming (GP) is a type of Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) commonly employed for automated program generation and model identification. Despite this, GP, as most forms of EA's, is plagued by long evaluation times, and is thus generally reserved for highly complex problems. Two major impacting factors for the runtime are the heterogeneous evaluation time for the individuals and the choice of algorithmic primitives. The first paper in this thesis utilizes Asynchronous Parallel Evolutionary Algorithms (APEA) for reducing the runtime by eliminating the need to wait for an entire generation to be evaluated before continuing the search. APEA is applied to …

Dermacentor variabilis, a common human-biting tick found throughout the eastern half and along the west coast of the United States, is a vector of multiple bacterial pathogens. Historically, D. variabilis has been considered a primary vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. A total of 883 adult D. variabilis, collected between 2012 and 2017 from various locations in 12 states across the United States, were screened for rickettsial DNA. Tick extracts were evaluated using three real-time PCR assays; an R. rickettsii-specific assay, a Rickettsia bellii-specific assay, and a Rickettsia genus-specific …

Hildegard Of Bingen And The Four Temperaments Theory, Minji Lee
Department of Religion Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Hildegard of Bingen (1097-1178) was a German nun in the Benedictine order. As the youngest daughter of ten children, she realized she was chosen by God and started her religious life quite early. Hildegard made a vow at the age of eight and joined the woman’s religious community with her mentor Jutta at the age of fourteen. She confessed that she received her first vision when conceived in her mother’s womb. Her continuous reception of visions became officially known through her first visionary book, the Scivias, short for "Scito vias Domini," which took her ten years to complete. After this …
