Endogenous Gene Tagging Of Pfr2 And Pfr5 In Trypanosoma Cruzi Using Crispr/Cas9, Naomi Bryant

All Master's Theses

The flagellum of Trypanosoma cruzi contains the paraflagellar rod (PFR) an extra-axonemal scaffolding. The PFR consists of a lattice of cytoskeletal filaments that lies alongside the (9 + 2) microtubular axoneme, beginning at the flagellar pocket and extending to the flagellar tip. The PFR has only been observed within the phylums Euglenozoa and Dinoflagellata, although many eukaryotic organisms with long flagella have extra-axonemal structures that accommodate enzymes and regulatory proteins along with serving as scaffolding. The exact function and basic molecular composition of the PFR has yet to be determined although the major structural components, PFR1 and PFR2 and several …

Modelling Stream Metabolism And Fish Biomass In Headwater Streams Of The Eastern Cascades Mountains, Zach Lessig Jan 2019

Modelling Stream Metabolism And Fish Biomass In Headwater Streams Of The Eastern Cascades Mountains, Zach Lessig

All Master's Theses

Headwater streams are important for the biological integrity of river systems because they represent most of the length of the hydrological network and control the downstream flow of energy and nutrients to larger river systems. Headwater streams are culturally and economically important because they, directly or indirectly, support recreationally important anadromous and resident fisheries. Managing fish in these systems often requires time-consuming population counts, but fish biomass might be related to overall stream productivity, which can be measured relatively easily using models to estimate stream metabolism. The goal of my study was to relate whole-stream metabolism to fish biomass in …

Fire And Road Disturbance Impacts On Forest Plant Species And Seed Rain In Table Mountain Fire Arai, Kittitas County, Washington, Jonathan A. Betz

All Master's Theses

Forest communities are in a constant state of change. Disturbance events can alter the physical landscape and create conditions favorable to some species while negatively impacting others. Fire has been a natural, reoccurring source of disturbance in Pacific Northwest forests. Over the past centuries the fire paradigm has changed in favor of fire suppression. Forest roads permit access provide greater access but further fracture forest community’s continuity. The 2012 Table Mountain Fire and road influence have altered the plant community’s seed rain and vegetation. This study measured dispersed seeds and understory vegetation cover as functions of roads and fire intensity. …

The Gut Microbiome: Is Fecal Matter Microbial Composition A Proxy For Intestinal Microbial Composition In Studies Of The Microbiome, Enique Reyes

All Master's Theses

As many health phenomena seem to be affected directly and indirectly by the microbiome, gut microbiome research has increased in the last decade. Issues such as allergies, cancer, obesity, and other health complications have been shown to be influenced by the microbiome. Most of gut microbiome research is done by collecting and sequencing the DNA of the microbiome of the fecal matter from model organisms or human subjects. Studies that use this method of sample collection and analysis assume that fecal matter microbiomes are similar to intestinal microbiomes, and that it can be used as a proxy. At present, no …
