Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications

In an effort to facilitate family engagement with services, improve reunification outcomes, and empower the families they serve, child welfare agencies across the country have developed and implemented programs designed to provide peer mentoring. These programs work to identify parents who have successfully navigated the child welfare system in the past and train them to mentor parents who are currently in the system. The current study used a quasi-experimental design and propensity score matching to examine the outcomes for children of families served by the Iowa Department of Human Services Parent Partner program, one of the earliest and most established …

Constitutionally Incapable: Parole Boards As Sentencing Courts, Mae C. Quinn Jan 2019

Constitutionally Incapable: Parole Boards As Sentencing Courts, Mae C. Quinn

Journal Articles

Courtroom sentencing, as part of the judicial process, is a long-standing norm in the justice system of the United States. But this basic criminal law precept is currently under quiet attack. This is because some states are now allowing parole boards to step in to decide criminal penalties without first affording defendants lawful judicial branch sentencing proceedings and sentences. These outside-of-court punishment decisions are occurring in the cases of youthful offenders entitled to sentencing relief under Miller v. Alabama, which outlawed automatic life-without-parole sentences for children. Thus, some Miller-impacted defendants are being sentenced by paroleboards as executive branch agents, rather …

Speaking Their Truth: Black Women's Perspectives On Executive-Level Administration In Higher Education, Tanja N. Bibbs Jan 2019

Speaking Their Truth: Black Women's Perspectives On Executive-Level Administration In Higher Education, Tanja N. Bibbs

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

While Black women have etched a place for themselves as leaders within colleges and universities, few have advanced to the most senior levels of postsecondary administration and they remain underrepresented in those type of roles (Gamble & Turner, 2015; Jackson & Harris, 2007; West, 2015). Scholarly research has explored Black women’s experiences as institutional leaders (Davis & Maldonado, 2015; Smith & Crawford, 2007; Waring, 2003); yet the phenomenon of executive-level higher education administration, specifically as it relates to Black women’s perspectives, is not well known (Enke, 2014; Jean-Marie, Williams, & Sherman, 2009). Moreover, research that directs attention to Black women’s …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

N-methyl mesoporphyrin IX (NMM) is a water-soluble, non-symmetric porphyrin with excellent optical properties and unparalleled selectivity for G-quadruplex (GQ) DNA. G-quadruplexes are non-canonical DNA structures formed by guanine-rich sequences. They are implicated in genomic stability, longevity, and cancer. The ability of NMM to selectively recognize GQ structures makes it a valuable scaffold for designing novel GQ binders. In this review, we survey the literature describing the GQ-binding properties of NMM as well as its wide utility in chemistry and biology. We start with the discovery of the GQ-binding properties of NMM and the development of NMM-binding aptamers. We then discuss …

Spheres Of Simultaneity In Adriana Lisboa’S Novel Hanói, Marguerite Itamar Harrison Jan 2019

Spheres Of Simultaneity In Adriana Lisboa’S Novel Hanói, Marguerite Itamar Harrison

Spanish and Portuguese: Faculty Publications

This essay has as its focus the interweaving of immigrant life stories and layers of human spaces in Adriana Lisboa’s novel Hanói (2013). Relying on Ana Martins Marques’ map-bending poems from Cartografias and on Doreen Massey’s geographical concepts of “multiple trajectories” and “spheres of dynamic simultaneity” articulated in For Space, I analyze the sense of place in the novel, as well as the presence of elements denoting belonging, displacement and un-belonging, especially from the point of view of the two main characters and their interconnecting, yet disparate, worlds.

The Role Of Klp-4 In Regulating Cholinergic Signaling In Vivo, Catherine Deuchler Jan 2019

The Role Of Klp-4 In Regulating Cholinergic Signaling In Vivo, Catherine Deuchler

Honors Program Theses

Cellular trafficking is dominated by the use of motor proteins trafficking cargo along the microtubules that make up the cellular cytoskeleton. Polarity within these cells controls the direction of the trafficking, and the cargo consists of organelles, new proteins, neurotransmitters, etc.. Motor proteins differ in the cargo they carry, the direction that they move, as well as the rate and distance that they can travel. The trafficking of neurotransmitters occurs along neurons, highly polarized cells, and this research focuses on neuronal trafficking as a method of controlling the release and degradation of acetylcholine and thus regulating the signals that they …

Identification Of Proteins Interacting With Zebrafish Miro Orthologs In The Yeast Two-Hybrid System, Yiran Tao Jan 2019

Identification Of Proteins Interacting With Zebrafish Miro Orthologs In The Yeast Two-Hybrid System, Yiran Tao

Honors Program Theses

The motility of mitochondria is required for providing energy and maintaining basic cellular functions in neurons. Mitochondrial Rho GTPase (Miro) is an essential component of the mitochondrial trafficking machinery, a protein complex that anchors mitochondria to the microtubule motor protein for long-distance transport. As a protein localizing to the mitochondrial outer membrane, Miro regulates the morphology and the motility of mitochondria. Upon mitochondrial depolarization, the PINK1/Parkin pathway is activated to arrest mitochondrial movement by targeting Miro for phosphorylation and ubiquitination in a calcium-sensitive manner. However, it remains unclear what effects the PINK1-dependent phosphorylation has on the structure and binding properties …

Car T Cells As A Patentable Therapeutic, Mckenzie List Jan 2019

Car T Cells As A Patentable Therapeutic, Mckenzie List

Honors Program Theses

The development of a therapeutic to treat a particular disease is a complicated process that incorporates numerous components such as drug discovery, clinical trials, FDA approval and patentability. In the last two decades, cancer research and development has shifted from identifying small molecule therapeutic agents to focusing research on a novel approach designated as immunotherapy. Today, immunotherapy has progressed from a twentieth century scientific theory into an innovative treatment to cancer. In particular, CAR T cells have demonstrated therapeutic properties for certain types of cancers, but these living cells are not compatible with the traditional therapeutic model. First, the drug …

Inevitably Dying: The Role Of Ideological Legacy-Derived Death Anxieties In Subverting Mortality Salience, Christina Fuleihan Jan 2019

Inevitably Dying: The Role Of Ideological Legacy-Derived Death Anxieties In Subverting Mortality Salience, Christina Fuleihan

Honors Program Theses

Existential debates – regarding life, death, and the states which potentially succeed existence – have widespread spiritual and ethical implications for general society. Rather than aimlessly questioning the metaphysical value of death on life, there are clear bioethical applications to exploring exaggerated human death anxieties. These fears are unique to our species and have wide-spread societal repercussions. By and large, discomfort with the notion of mortality permeates unequivocally throughout our species’ histories. We become our own worst enemies when we fail to admit and confront the inevitability of death. The lack of mortality salience encouraged by our trepidations fuels an …

Seven Coordinate Molybdenum And Tungsten Complexes Containing Tpm And Tpm Derivatives And The Impact Of Ligand Substitution On Nmr Chemical Shifts, Cole Seager

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

A series of known and new seven coordinate molybdenum and tungsten complexes of tris(pyrazolyl)methane (Tpm) and substituted Tpm, [TpmM(CO)3X]+, have been synthesized. Depending on the identity of X, (bromo, iodo, hydrido) and the substitution of the Tpm ligand, substantial chemical shift differences are observed for the hydrogen on the central carbon of the Tpm ligand. Factors impacting the chemical shift of the hydrogen on the central carbon of the Tpm ligand, such as the electron donating ability of the Tpm ligand and the electronegativity of the additional ligand on the metal, will be discussed.

Say "Oui" To "We": A Longitudinal Analysis Of Pronouns And Articles In French And English, Colleen Wilkes Jan 2019

Say "Oui" To "We": A Longitudinal Analysis Of Pronouns And Articles In French And English, Colleen Wilkes

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Modern English only uses gender in personal, reflexive, and possessive third person singular pronouns. Modern English also does not use gendered articles, which extends to not assigning an arbitrary gender to inanimate objects. This study examines how recent this aspect of grammar is, and to what degree did cultural interaction with the French throughout history influence the use of gendered pronouns. Two written texts in British English (one in Old English, one in Modern English) and one written text in French are analyzed for elements of grammatical gender embedded within articles, pronouns, and possessive adjectives. The geopolitical influences on incorporating …

Alkylaminophenol Induces G1/S Phase Cell Cycle Arrest In Glioblastoma Cells Through P53 And Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Signaling Pathway., Phuong Doan, Aliyu Musa, Nuno R Candeias, Frank Emmert-Streib, Olli Yli-Harja, Meenakshisundaram Kandhavelu

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common type of malignant brain tumor in adults. We show here that small molecule 2-[(3,4-dihydroquinolin-1(2H)-yl)(p-tolyl)methyl]phenol (THTMP), a potential anticancer agent, increases the human glioblastoma cell death. Its mechanism of action and the interaction of selective signaling pathways remain elusive. Three structurally related phenolic compounds were tested in multiple glioma cell lines in which the potential activity of the compound, THTMP, was further validated and characterized. Upon prolonged exposer to THTMP, all glioma cell lines undergo p53 and cyclin-dependent kinase mediated cell death with the IC

Reverting Immune Suppression To Enhance Cancer Immunotherapy., Bella S Guerrouahen, Cristina Maccalli, Chiara Cugno, Sergio Rutella, Emmanuel T Akporiaye

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Tumors employ strategies to escape immune control. The principle aim of most cancer immunotherapies is to restore effective immune surveillance. Among the different processes regulating immune escape, tumor microenvironment-associated soluble factors, and/or cell surface-bound molecules are mostly responsible for dysfunctional activity of tumor-specific CD8

Rosana Paulino And The Art Of Refazimento: Reconfigurations Of The Black Female Body In The Land Of Racial Democracy, Flávia Santos De Araújo

Africana Studies: Faculty Publications

This essay analyzes the historical and aesthetic significance of the visual art project Assentamento(s) (2012-2013) by Rosana Paulino. Her work reinscribes the black female body into the historical narrative of Brazil, complicating long-established notions of “Brazilianness”. By using art techniques and materials that combine lithography, digital printing, drawing, sewing, video, and sculpting, Paulino develops a multi-layered artistic assembly that she describes as a process of refazimento (“remaking”). Paulino pushes the boundaries of the historical archives, highlighting both the struggles and agency of black women within Brazilian society. I argue that, as a contemporary black woman visual artist, Paulino engages in …

Terrorism Risk Insurance Act: Time To Renew . . . Or Rethink?, Jeffrey E. Thomas Jan 2019

Terrorism Risk Insurance Act: Time To Renew . . . Or Rethink?, Jeffrey E. Thomas

Faculty Works

This paper summarizes the U.S. program for terrorism insurance, outlines its advantages and disadvantages, and describes the current proposals for extension of the program. The program, generally referred to as a “Federal Backstop,” functions in some ways that are similar to reinsurance, but it does not require participants to pay premiums ex ante. Instead uses an ex post recoupment mechanism to recover some or all of the Federal payments made under the program. This approach has the advantage of reducing the cost and increasing the availability of terrorism insurance. Some have criticized the program for its interference in market mechanisms, …

Development And Preliminary Evaluation Of An Integrated Individual Nozzle Direct Injection And Carrier Flow Rate Control System For Pesticide Applications, Joe D. Luck, Scott A. Shearer, Michael P. Sama

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Direct injection systems for agricultural spray applications continue to present challenges in terms of commercialization and adoption by end users. Such systems have typically suffered from lag time and mixing uniformity issues, which have outweighed the potential benefits of keeping chemical and carrier separate or reducing improper tank-mixed concentration by eliminating operator measurements. The proposed system sought to combine high-pressure direct nozzle injection with an automated variable-flow nozzle to improve chemical mixing and response times. The specific objectives were to: (1) integrate a high-pressure direct nozzle injection system with variable-flow carrier control into a prototype for testing, (2) assess the …

The Purple Plague: Effect Of High Intensity Grazing Post Fire On Purple Threeawn Cover And Reproductive Effort And Prairie Dog Responses, Justin Roemer

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Purple threeawn (Aristida purpurea Nutt.) is a native warm-season bunchgrass found in western Kansas on The Nature Conservancy’s Smoky Valley Ranch and across rangelands of western North America. Upon reaching maturity, grazing/clipping pressure decreases for this bunchgrass due to poor forage quality and extreme unpalatability for cattle (Bos taurus) and Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). This decrease in grazing/clipping has led to development of near monocultures which cause negative impacts to the prairie ecosystem including decreases in rangeland quality and suitable habitat for prairie dogs, a keystone species. This decrease in prairie dog habitat …
