Audience Analysis: Learning About Student Motivations And Instructional Preferences, Krista Reynolds
CUP Faculty Research
The energy level in the room is high. Students work together diligently, examining their computer screens and sharing ideas to try to solve a problem. When the instructor asks them to share their findings, several students raise their hands and offer insightful observations. After the session is over, a couple of students take the time to tell the instructor the value of what they learned in class and how helpful it will be to them. This scenario is what we instructors strive for—that our students will be engaged in our sessions and leave feeling their time was well-spent.

Management Recommendations For Ecological Restoration On The Little River Parcel, Maya Sady Partain, Garitt Mathews
Management Recommendations For Ecological Restoration On The Little River Parcel, Maya Sady Partain, Garitt Mathews
Environmental Science & Management Senior Capstones
Ecological restoration is an important aspect of land management. Data collection and ongoing monitoring help inform restoration decisions and determine their effectiveness. In this project, we followed a monitoring protocol provided by the Trinidad Coastal Land Trust to assess the 2019 status of their Little River parcel, a fifteen-acre area near the mouth of Little River in Trinidad, California. We performed a site analysis of invasive plant species and recorded their extent and location, as well as noting other observations of the ecology, topography, and biology of the site. After making our observations, we recommended land management methods woven together …

Determining Spatial Distribution And Habitat Use For Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) In Hoopa Tribal Streams Using Occupancy Modeling To Inform Restoration, Ely D. Boone, Seamus C. Frazer-Newcomb, Brit A. Taylor
Environmental Science & Management Senior Capstones
Pacific salmonid populations have faced significant decline due to poor management and human disturbance. Habitat restoration and monitoring is essential to the ongoing survival of these fish. This study examines population abundance of juvenile Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) and steelhead trout (O. mykiss) in five tributaries of the Trinity River in Northern California to determine the success of recent restoration efforts. We used traditional snorkel survey methods paired with an occupancy model to compare populations of two restored streams and four unrestored streams. We found that despite Coho being detected …

#Squadgoals: A Response To Seth Waxman, Amelia Rinehart
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Former Solicitor General Seth Waxman’s recent remarks, framing our current age of patent law in the Supreme Court as “interesting times,” unquestionably captures the exhilaration of an active Supreme Court in this area of the law. Waxman knows his way around patent cases decided by the Supreme Court — he presented arguments in four of the six patent cases in the 2016 Term — but he also has an extensive appellate practice before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (“Federal Circuit”), which has exclusive appellate jurisdiction over patent cases. Given his substantial experience in patent appellate litigation, Waxman …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Course material for universities constantly needs updating and refinement. One area that required new material at The University of Akron was the Principles of Biology II course, specifically in the laboratory section. A new laboratory module was created and centered around hormone signaling in Arabidopsis thaliana. Brassinosteroid mutants were used to show students the event hormones had on plants. Students were to test root lengths by completing growth plate analysis.

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper introduces a framework for improvement of complex system performance. Complex systems are besieged with conditions marked by increasing uncertainty, emergence, and ambiguity. Additionally, demands for increased productivity, resource efficiencies, and performance improvement make new approaches paramount for modern systems engineers. In response, a framework to improve complex system performance is developed. Following an introduction, the paper pursues four objectives: (1) introduction of Complex System Governance (CSG) as a foundation to describe essential system functions, (2) suggest system `pathologies' as an explanation for deep system performance issues, (3) exploration of system performance improvement as a function of `requisite variety' …

Litter Carbon Pool Variation Between Restored And Disturbed Coastal Habitats In Manatee County Florida, Angela Mctigue
Litter Carbon Pool Variation Between Restored And Disturbed Coastal Habitats In Manatee County Florida, Angela Mctigue
Theses & ETDs
Coastal ecosystems provide key services, such as carbon storage, but compete with development in natural areas. For this reason, increasing their value requires restoring coastal habitats that have been degraded. After the ecosystem has been restored, a goal is that it will start to store more carbon in its soils over time. Specifically, in this thesis I sought to see if litter mass and decomposition change over time in restored habitats, and if litter mass and decomposition change between restored and disturbed habitats. By using the Tea Bag Index, and analyzing the litter fall in respective disturbed and restored habitats …
Kinetic Characterization Of C. Elegans G97n Mutant Idh-1, Sierra Schwabach
Kinetic Characterization Of C. Elegans G97n Mutant Idh-1, Sierra Schwabach
Theses & ETDs
Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) is a critical enzyme in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and other metabolic processes. IDH catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of isocitrate to ⍺-ketoglutarate (⍺-KG) with the reduction of NAD(P)+ to NAD(P)H. Mutations in IDH-1 are found in approximately 80% of grade II-III gliomas and secondary glioblastomas in humans. Mutant IDH-1 is characterized by a gain of function activity where ⍺-KG is reduced to 2-hydroxyglutarate (2-HG) by NADPH. This neomorphic activity results in altered cell metabolism. 2-HG also binds competitively with many α-KG dependent dioxygenases, including some essential histone demethylases. IDH-1 mutations are thought to occur early in, …

Trickster Law: Promoting Resilience And Adaptive Governance By Allowing Other Perspectives On Natural Resource Management, Robin Kundis Craig
Trickster Law: Promoting Resilience And Adaptive Governance By Allowing Other Perspectives On Natural Resource Management, Robin Kundis Craig
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
The Anthropocene requires a new approach to natural resources law and policy, an approach that this short article terms "trickster law." Trickster law incorporates insights from resilience theory, adaptive governance scholarship, and cultural/anthropological studies of trickster tales to create a legal approach to natural resource management that is precautionary, engaged in proactive planning, based in principled flexibility, and pluralistic. This article focuses on the "pluralism" component, presenting three examples of how law modified to be more inclusive and respect different value systems has generated new approaches to natural resources management that better promote social-ecological resilience to climate change and other …
Empirical Studies Of Claim Construction, Jonas Anderson, Peter Menell
Empirical Studies Of Claim Construction, Jonas Anderson, Peter Menell
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Patent claims define the scope of the patent right and hence are central to the operation of the patent system. Patent prosecutors devote substantial effort to crafting patent claims so as to maximize the scope of their right without “reading on” prior art (and thereby defeating novelty). Businesses seeking to enter a technology marketplace must be careful to avoid encroaching patent claims. Thus, when patentees enforce their rights, the interpretation of claim boundaries guides both validity and infringement analysis.
Following the Supreme Court’s decision in Markman v. Westview Instruments (517 U.S. 370 (1996)), holding that “the construction of a patent, …

Is Meat The New Tobacco? Regulating Food Demand In The Age Of Climate Change, Lingxi Chenyang
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Switching from a meat-heavy to a plant-based diet is one of the highest-impact lifestyle changes for climate mitigation and adaptation. However, conventional demand-side energy policy has focused on increasing consumption of efficient machines and fuels. Regulating food demand has key advantages. First, food consumption is biologically constrained, thus switching to more efficient foods avoids unintended consequences of switching to more efficient machines, like higher overall energy consumption. Second, food consumption, like smoking, is primed for normshifting because it occurs in socially conspicuous environments. Indeed, while place-based bans and information regulation were essential in lowering the prevalence of smoking, the same …

Atomizing The Clean Water Act: Ignoring The Whole Statute And Asking The Wrong Questions, Robert W. Adler, Brian House
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
When attempting to resolve difficult issues of statutory construction involving complex statutes, courts sometimes focus on individual words and phrases without evaluating how they fit within the text and structure of the whole statute. We call this “atomization” of the statutory text. Judges have fallen into this trap in construing the Clean Water Act (CWA) and other lengthy, complex federal environmental statutes. That tendency contributes to ongoing confusion about the scope and coverage of the CWA. During the 2019-2020 Term, the U.S. Supreme Court will resolve a circuit split in the most recent line of cases exhibiting this tendency. Courts …

Population Law And Policy: From Control And Contraception To Equity And Equality, Victoria Mather
Faculty Articles
As a young professor at St. Mary's University School of Law in the 1980s, I had the opportunity to teach in our summer program in Innsbruck, Austria. At the time, faculty members were required to teach an international or comparative law course, and I developed a mini-course in population law and policy. Over the last thirty years, I have had the opportunity to rethink and redevelop the course and to teach it during fifteen summers in the beautiful Austrian Alps. Our summer program became known as the St. Mary's Institute on World Legal Problems, and my course developed into a …

Estradiol (E) is a multitasking hormone that plays a prominent role in the reproductive system, and also contributes to physiological and growth mechanisms throughout the body. Frisina and colleagues have previously demonstrated the beneficial effects of this hormone, with E-treated subjects maintaining low auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds relative to control subjects (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2006;103:14246; Hearing Research, 2009;252:29). In the present study, we evaluated the functionality of the peripheral and central auditory systems in female CBA/CaJ middle-aged mice during and after long-term hormone replacement therapy (HRT) via …

Traditional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are prepared via polymerization based on small molecular monomers. However, the employment of polymers as building blocks to construct COFs has not been reported yet. Herein, we create a new concept of polymer covalent organic frameworks (polyCOFs) formed by linear polymers as structural building blocks, which inherit the merits from both COFs and linear polymers. PolyCOFs represent a new category of porous COF materials that demonstrate good crystallinity and high stability. More importantly, benefiting from the flexibility and processability of a linear polymer, polyCOFs can spontaneously form defect-free, flexible, and freestanding membranes that exhibit excellent …

Intracellular bacteria that live in host cell–derived vacuoles are significant causes of human disease. Parasitism of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is essential for many vacuole-adapted bacteria. Acid sphingomyelinase (ASM) influences LDL cholesterol egress from the lysosome. Using functional inhibitors of ASM (FIASMAs), we show that ASM activity is key for infection cycles of vacuole-adapted bacteria that target cholesterol trafficking—Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Coxiella burnetii, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Chlamydia pneumoniae. Vacuole maturation, replication, and infectious progeny generation by A. phagocytophilum, which exclusively hijacks LDL cholesterol, are halted and C. burnetii, for which lysosomal cholesterol accumulation is bactericidal, …

Identifying proteins that function at replication forks is essential to understanding DNA replication, chromatin assembly, and replication-coupled DNA repair mechanisms. Combining quantitative mass spectrometry in multiple cell types with stringent statistical cutoffs, we generated a high-confidence catalog of 593 proteins that are enriched at replication forks and nascent chromatin. Loss-of-function genetic analyses indicate that 85% yield phenotypes that are consistent with activities in DNA and chromatin replication or already have described functions in these processes. We illustrate the value of this resource by identifying activities of the BET family proteins BRD2, BRD3, and BRD4 in controlling DNA replication. These proteins …

P53 Phosphomimetics Preserve Transient Secondary Structure But Reduce Binding To Mdm2 And Mdmx, Robin Levy, Emily Gregory, Wade Borcherds, Gary W. Daughdrill
Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications
The disordered p53 transactivation domain (p53TAD) contains specific levels of transient helical secondary structure that are necessary for its binding to the negative regulators, mouse double minute 2 (Mdm2) and MdmX. The interactions of p53 with Mdm2 and MdmX are also modulated by posttranslational modifications (PTMs) of p53TAD including phosphorylation at S15, T18 and S20 that inhibits p53-Mdm2 binding. It is unclear whether the levels of transient secondary structure in p53TAD are changed by phosphorylation or other PTMs. We used phosphomimetic mutants to determine if adding a negative charge at positions 15 and 18 has any effect on the transient …

Caribbean Coastal Marine Productivity (CARICOMP) was a basin-wide cooperative, international network of marine laboratories established in 1985. Recognizing major trends of change in coastal ecosystems and the importance of the linkages among them, our goal was to monitor synoptically with standardized methods the physical environment and to document trends in measures of the structure and functioning of coral reefs, seagrasses and mangroves. Between 1985 and 1993, the CARICOMP Steering Committee established a data management center and wrote a methods manual. Marine laboratories joined the program by appointing a Site Director and signing an agreement specifying the cost sharing and responsibilities …

College science instructors need continuous professional development (PD) to meet the call to evidence-based practice. New PD efforts need to focus on the nuanced blend of factors that influence instructors’ teaching practices. We used persona methodology to describe the diversity among instructors who were participating in a long-term PD initiative. Persona methodology originates from ethnography. It takes data from product users and compiles those data in the form of fictional characters. Personas facilitate user-centered design. We identified four personas among our participants: Emma the Expert views herself as the subject-matter expert in the classroom and values her hard-earned excellence in …
