The Insensible Dependency - Addiction, Clarissa Orona
The Insensible Dependency - Addiction, Clarissa Orona
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Addiction is the desire for the intake of a certain substance. All people have an addiction to something whether that is a substance, an item, or an act of doing something. Specific to this topic, it was found that alcohol and drugs are the most common substances to become addicted. Two key factors influencing this are easy accessibility and cost. A human’s whole life can change just after they make the choice of using a substance.
● These substances change a human’s bodily function and cognitive abilities. ● Dopamine is a person’s reward and pleasure hormone meaning once an addict …
Estimating The Use Of Public Lands: Integrated Modeling Of Open Populations With Convolution Likelihood Ecological Abundance Regression, Lutz F. Gruber, Erica F. Stuber, Joseph J. Fontaine
Estimating The Use Of Public Lands: Integrated Modeling Of Open Populations With Convolution Likelihood Ecological Abundance Regression, Lutz F. Gruber, Erica F. Stuber, Joseph J. Fontaine
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
We present an integrated open population model where the population dynamics are defined by a differential equation, and the related statistical model utilizes a Poisson binomial convolution likelihood. Key advantages of the proposed approach over existing open population models include the flexibility to predict related, but unobserved quantities such as total immigration or emigration over a specified time period, and more computationally efficient posterior simulation by elimination of the need to explicitly simulate latent immigration and emigration. The viability of the proposed method is shown in an in-depth analysis of outdoor recreation participation on public lands, where the surveyed populations …
Unmet Expectations In Healthcare Settings: Experiences Of Transgender And Gender Diverse Adults In The Central Great Plains, Heather Meyer
Unmet Expectations In Healthcare Settings: Experiences Of Transgender And Gender Diverse Adults In The Central Great Plains, Heather Meyer
Trans Collaborations Academic Papers
Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals face a long-term, multi-faceted process if they choose to begin a gender affirmation journey. Decisions to go on hormone therapy and/or have a surgical procedure necessitate the TGD individual to set up an appointment with a healthcare provider. However, when TGD patients interact with healthcare practitioners, problems can arise. This article documents and categorizes the types of unmet expectations that are common in the TGD patient-healthcare provider social dynamic in the Central Great Plains of the United States. Utilizing a community-based participatory research model, qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 27 TGD individuals about …
The Association Of Perfluoroalkyl Substance Exposure And Lung Function In The U.S. Population, Brenna C. Heinle
The Association Of Perfluoroalkyl Substance Exposure And Lung Function In The U.S. Population, Brenna C. Heinle
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Background/Aim: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are chemical compounds used in consumer products and are linked with increase in cholesterol, thyroid disease, and pregnancy-induced hypertension. However, their association with lung function is not completely understood.
Methods: Cross sectional 2011-12 U.S. population data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was used (N=1,450, aged 12 to 79 years, 52% men). Serum concentration of four PFASs, perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) were assessed using mass spectrometry and were categorized into tertiles. Lung function was measured by spirometry as forced vital capacity (FVC), …

This essay explores the imperative to embrace a new model of education that will engage students in learning about the interconnectedness of our multi species world, sustainability, and global solidarity -- the belief "that unity of humankind can be established on the basis of some basic or core human values" (Korab-Karpowicz 305). Foreign language courses -- in particular advanced-level offerings that address literacy, critical thinking, and cultural comparisons -- are ideal settings for educating for sustainability literacy. Such literacy is essential to our collective twenty-first-century global identity, but it requires transformative educational practices. As we design foreign language courses, we …
Frequent Prescribed Fires Can Reduce Risk Of Tick-Borne Diseases, Elizabeth R. Gleim
Frequent Prescribed Fires Can Reduce Risk Of Tick-Borne Diseases, Elizabeth R. Gleim
Environmental Studies / Environmental Science Faculty Scholarship
Recently, a two-year study found that long-term prescribed fire significantly reduced tick abundance at sites with varying burn regimes (burned surrounded by burned areas [BB], burned surrounded by unburned areas [BUB], and unburned surrounded by burned areas [UBB]). In the current study, these ticks were tested for pathogens to more directly investigate the impacts of long-term prescribed burning on human disease risk. A total of 5,103 ticks (4,607 Amblyomma americanum, 76 Amblyomma maculatum, 383 Ixodes scapularis, two Ixodes brunneus, and 35 Dermacentor variabilis) were tested for Borrelia spp., Rickettsia spp., Ehrlichia spp., and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Long-term prescribed fire did not …

“Being A Mom = Having All The Feels”: Social Support In A Postpartum Depression Online Support Group, Alexandru Stana, Alanna R. Miller
Communication Studies Faculty Works
Postpartum depression represents one of the most common complications associated with childbirth, with current estimates placing its prevalence between 13% and 19% among recent mothers. Literature suggests severe implications for both mothers and children, and identifies stressful life events, poor marital relationships, lower socioeconomic status, and lack of social support as major predictors of a PPD diagnosis. This study sought to investigate types of social support sought and received by women with PPD. In contrast with previous research, informational support was found to be the most frequently used type of support, followed by emotional support and network/community support. Selective coding …

Evaluation Of Two Unmanned Aircraft Systems As Tools For Protecting Crops From Blackbird Damage, Lucas J. Wandrie, Page E. Klug, Mark E. Clark
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
In response to a need for mitigating blackbird damage to crops, we evaluated the effectiveness of two unmanned aircraft systems (UAS or drones) to protect crops from blackbird damage. UAS are known to elicit behavioral and physiological responses in wildlife and have been proposed as a means to protect row crop agriculture from avian pest depredation. We evaluated the behavioral responses of captive and free-ranging red-winged blackbirds to a fixed-wing and a rotary-wing (multi-rotor, quadcopter) UAS by comparing preflight behaviors to behaviors during UAS approach. Due to the flight limitations of the respective UAS, the fixed-wing and rotarywing were evaluated …

Illinois is one of the US states where elimination of feral swine (Sus scrofa) was determined practical, as only a few isolated populations were established. A particularly important step towards feral swine elimination from Illinois was to eliminate the population in Fulton County. We describe the approaches applied to systematically detect, locate, and eliminate feral swine in a successful county-wide elimination. Detecting and locating feral swine was facilitated by extensive outreach activities, aerial surveys to locate crop damage, and use of camera traps placed over bait in areas where reports, sign, or crop damage occurred. The population was …

Feral swine are among the world’s most destructive invasive species, and monitoring their populations is essential for research and management purposes. Observation stations located along primitive roads have been an efficient and effective means to intercept the daily activities of many animal species for collecting data from which abundance indices can be validly calculated. Feral swine are among the many species documented to use primitive (dirt), low-use roads as routes to easily traverse surrounding habitats and thus be well-monitored in various habitats globally by using road-based observation stations such as camera traps or tracking plots. However, there are relatively few …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Two small Indian mongooses (Herpestes auropunctatus) were live-captured in 2012 at separate locations on the Hawaiian Island of Kaua'i, which was previously considered to be free of this invasive species. Genotypes from these two individuals were compared to genotypes of H. auropunctatus from the islands of Hawai'i (n =39), O'ahu (n =91), Maui (n = 39), and Moloka'i (n = 19) to determine the island of origin of the Kaua'i individuals. Genotypes were generated from each individual using five microsatellite loci. Genetic clustering was estimated by Bayesian inference of spatial clustering of individuals and …
Reducing Prairie Dog Populations And Damage By Castration Of Dominant Males, Gary W. Witmer
Reducing Prairie Dog Populations And Damage By Castration Of Dominant Males, Gary W. Witmer
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) occur widely across the prairie states of North America. They compete with livestock for forage, transmit plague, and damage lawns, landscaping, and property. Interest in non-lethal methods, such as immunocontraception, is growing; however, reductions in the population due to contraception may be offset by increases in survival because adults and yearlings are not subject to the energetic demands of reproduction, and lower densities may increase the amount of resources available to growing offspring. Surgical sterilization provides a means for modeling these effects. Thus, we castrated males prior to the 1998 breeding season to simulate the …

Macrophages are phagocytic cells located in tissues, organs and even circulated within our body as white blood cells. They are critical in detecting tissue damage and infection. Resident tissue macrophages initiate the signals for inflammation recruiting neutrophils and blood monocytes which mature into macrophages at sites of infection and in the resolution of inflammation. Based on the local cytokine milieu in tissue sites, macrophages may be polarized into pro-inflammatory M1 or anti-inflammatory M2 phenotypes. Receptor tyrosine kinase Mer (MERTK) helps in clearing dead neutrophils and other apoptotic cells from damaged tissue sites preventing chronic inflammation and autoimmune disorders. MERTK aids …

Given the intensity and frequency of environmental change, the linked and cross-scale nature of social-ecological systems, and the proliferation of big data, methods that can help synthesize complex system behavior over a geographical area are of great value. Fisher information evaluates order in data and has been established as a robust and effective tool for capturing changes in system dynamics, including the detection of regimes and regime shifts. The methods developed to compute Fisher information can accommodate multivariate data of various types and requires no a priori decisions about system drivers, making it a unique and powerful tool. However, the …
Crossed Tracks: Mesolimulus, Archaeopteryx, And The Nature Of Fossils, Leonard Finkelman
Crossed Tracks: Mesolimulus, Archaeopteryx, And The Nature Of Fossils, Leonard Finkelman

Organisms leave a variety of traces in the fossil record. Among these traces, vertebrate and invertebrate paleontologists conventionally recognize a distinction between the remains of an organism’s phenotype (body fossils) and the remains of an organism’s life activities (trace fossils). The same convention recognizes body fossils as biological structures and trace fossils as geological objects. This convention explains some curious practices in the classification, as with the distinction between taxa for trace fossils and for tracemakers. I consider the distinction between “parallel taxonomies,” or parataxonomies, which privileges some kinds of fossil taxa as “natural” and others as “artificial.” The motivations …

Betting & Hierarchy In Paleontology, Leonard Finkelman

In his Rock, Bone, and Ruin: An Optimist’s Guide to the Historical Sciences, Adrian Currie argues that historical scientists should be optimistic about success in reconstructing the past on the basis of future research. This optimism follows in part from examples of success in paleontology. I argue that paleontologists’ success in these cases is underwritten by the hierarchical nature of biological information: extinct organisms have extant analogues at various levels of taxonomic, ecological, and physiological hierarchies, and paleontologists are adept at exploiting analogies within one informational hierarchy to infer information in another. On this account, fossils serve the role …

Max Weber Meets The Fair Housing Act: 'Life Chances' And The Need For Expanded Lost Housing Opportunity Damages, Christopher C. Ligatti
Belmont Law Review
This article will discuss the work of sociologist Max Weber, pioneer of the term “life chances,”and how the field of life chances has been adopted and expanded into placed-based theories such as “neighborhood effects” and the “geography of opportunity.” This article will then give a brief overview of the purpose of the Fair Housing Act and how its passage was not meant simply to combat offensive behavior, but to increase residential mobility. This article will also discuss how “lost housing opportunity” has previously been used by the courts. This section of the article will include a discussion of United States …

State Regulation Of Generic Drug Price Gouging, Philip Fitzgerald
Belmont Health Law Journal
This note acknowledges that the high cost of drugs, both generic and patented, is an important issue for patients and policy makers alike. This note focuses solely on generic drugs, as the rights of drug patent holders are protected by the Copyright Clause of the United States Constitution, which this note does not seek to address. Additionally, although the cost of drugs can be heavily impacted by Congress and federal regulatory agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration, this note will only look at the measures being taken by legislatures at …

To achieve a harmonious profile with pleasant smile arc in Class II hyperdivergent adult cases has been a clinical challenge. Adequate retraction and intrusion of maxillary dentition as well as vertical control are the key factors to improve the smiling appearance and the facial profile. A 19-year-old female initially presented with lip protrusion, convex profile, retrusive chin, and a Class II malocclusion. The cephalometric analysis showed a Class II skeletal pattern (ANB = 9°) with high mandibular plane angle (SN-MP = 38°). The treatment plan included extraction of four first premolars for anterior teeth retraction as well as installation of …

This study aims to characterize the effect of microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) on the desiccation cracking behaviors of compacted calcium bentonite soils. We prepare six groups of samples by mixing bentonites with deionized water, pure bacteria solution, pure cementation solution, and mixed bacteria and cementation solutions at three different percentages. We use an image processing tool to characterize the soil desiccation cracking patterns. Experimental results reveal the influences of fluid type and mixture percentage on the crack evolution and volumetric deformation of bentonite soils. MICP reactions effectively delay the crack initiation and remediate desiccation cracking, as reflected by the decreased …

Due to the increasing concern towards fossil fuel reserve and its fluctuating price, many countries shifted towards producing biodiesel as an alternative green fuel. In this study, the main objective is to synthesis biodiesel from coconut copra, an agro-industrial residue, as potential feedstock using different transesterification techniques, namely stirring mechanical-assisted technique (SAT), ultrasonic-assisted technique (UAT), and microwave-assisted technique (MAT). The current study will show comparison between the biodiesel yields, fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) compositions and fuel properties of the transesterification techniques used. The result showed that the copra residue biodiesel (CRB) using SAT produced the highest yield of biodiesel …

Coastal communities are deeply dependent on coastal ecosystems while being especially vulnerable to climate change. Intense typhoons, storm surge, and habitat loss due to coral bleaching are among the impacts that threaten their lives and livelihoods. These will only become more severe if carbon dioxide emissions continue to increase unabated.
Blue carbon is a natural innovation to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Among the first steps in harnessing blue carbon for climate change mitigation is quantifying potential carbon storage in respective coastal habitats, and understanding the factors that influence such capacity

High-throughput studies constitute an essential and valued source of information for researchers. However, high-throughput experimental workflows are often complex, with multiple data sets that may contain large numbers of false positives. The representation of high-throughput data in the Gene Ontology (GO) therefore presents a challenging annotation problem, when the overarching goal of GO curation is to provide the most precise view of a gene's role in biology. To address this, representatives from annotation teams within the GO Consortium reviewed high-throughput data annotation practices. We present an annotation framework for high-throughput studies that will facilitate good standards in GO curation and, …
