Marine Ornithology

The Polynesian Storm Petrel is an endangered seabird found in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Despite its critical conservation status, little is known about its population, its breeding biology, and the threats facing it. We provide information about its reproductive status, nesting areas, and plastic ingestion on the remote island of Motu Motiro Hiva. In seven visits between 2012 and 2024, we found breeding activity to occur from August to November, with nesting cavities located primarily on the rocky areas of the east and southeast sectors of the island. We found an extremely high incidence of plastic ingestion in the 15 …

Staff Education To Enhance Nurse Practitioner Competency In The Identification And Management Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder In An Outpatient Clinic, Obioma Linda Okeke

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) staff education project was a quality improvement initiative focused on enhancing nurse practitioners’ (NPs’) competency in the identification and management of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The practice problem identified at the local project site through organizational feedback and observation was the inconsistent use of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) screening tool across NP encounters. The practice-focused question for this project was: In NPs in an outpatient clinic setting, how does staff education on GAD-7 and clinical guidelines influence their knowledge, confidence, and consistent use of anxiety screening practices? The purpose of this doctoral project …

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal surface waters influences local water quality and is an important component of biogeochemical cycling in coastal systems. Many studies have highlighted transformations of DOM along longitudinal river to estuary transects; however, processes that alter DOM composition along lower reaches of rivers and nearshore estuarine waters is poorly understood. The high productivity of coastal environments and their limited representation in Earth System Models further highlights a need for better understanding of DOM transformations along coastal reaches. We leverage a spatially distributed community sampling effort that spans coastal ecosystems across two regions to identify broad spatial …

Neural Dynamics In The Cortico-Basal Ganglia-Thalamic-Cortical Loop Underlying Flexible Motor Timing, Zidan Yang Nov 2025

Neural Dynamics In The Cortico-Basal Ganglia-Thalamic-Cortical Loop Underlying Flexible Motor Timing, Zidan Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ability to flexibly time actions is a fundamental aspect of voluntary motor control. The frontal cortex and striatum exhibit ramping neural activity that predicts movement initiation, suggesting they function as a core timing circuit. However, the distinct computational roles of these highly interconnected regions and the specific cell types involved have remained elusive. This thesis investigates the neural mechanisms of motor timing by combining cell-type-specific perturbations, multi-regional electrophysiology, and computational modeling in mice. First, we demonstrate that the frontal cortex and striatum play complementary roles in an adjustable timing mechanism. Transiently silencing the frontal cortex effectively “pauses” the ramping …

The small GTPase CDC42 promotes axon growth through actin filament polymerization and this growth is driven by axonal localization of the mRNA encoding the prenylated CDC42 isoform (Prenyl-Cdc42). Here, we show that axonal Prenyl-Cdc42 mRNA levels and the mRNA’s translation are decreased by growth-inhibiting stimulation and increased by growth-promoting stimulation. In contrast, axonal RhoA mRNA transport and translation are increased by growth-inhibiting but unaffected by growth-promoting stimuli. Localized increase in KHSRP in response to growth inhibitory stimulation, through elevation of intracellular Ca2+, promotes decrease in axonal levels of Prenyl-Cdc42 mRNA. Distinct 3’UTR motifs regulate transport and …

Lobizona And Cemetery Boys: Broadening Representation Of The Latinx/Chicanx Community, Genesis Pabon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on two young adult speculative fiction novels, Lobizona and Cemetery Boys, that showcase the need for accurate representation of the Latinx/Chicanx and LGBTQ+ communities. Themes of sexuality, race, identity, and the gender binary within Latinx/Chicanx cultures will be explored. The narratives of the protagonists in both novels disrupt the gender binary in the United States and the Latinx/Chicanx community. There is a lack of literature that focuses on Latinx/Chicanx young adult speculative fiction, particularly in the United States, highlighting the need for more scholarly research in this area. It is essential for literary scholars and readers to …

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

Radiopharmaceutical development and clinical translation face numerous scientific, ethical, and regulatory challenges, particularly within the pediatric population. Although molecular imaging holds significant promise for improving diagnosis and treatment across a spectrum of diseases, including pediatric-specific conditions like Kawasaki disease, autism spectrum disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and neuroblastoma, the path from discovery to clinical application remains problematic. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides three primary pathways-traditional Investigational New Drug (IND) applications, exploratory Investigational New Drug application (eIND), and the Radioactive Drug Research Committee (RDRC) mechanism-to facilitate clinical translation of radiotracers. However, these frameworks are not specifically tailored to pediatric needs. …

Development And Initial Validation Of An Instrument To Measure Teachers’ Socioscientific Issues Instruction Perceptions, Michael Edward Mitchell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about how high school science teachers perceive Socioscientific Issues (SSI) on a broad scale, including what factors shape their views of a pedagogical shift to adopt SSI. To address this critical gap, I constructed the Teachers’ Socioscientific Issues (SSI) Perceptions Survey (TSPS), the first instrument specifically designed and initially validated to measure teacher perceptions of SSI integration. This study presents the development and validation of the TSPS, offering robust evidence for its reliability, fairness, and construct validity.

Survey development adhered to gold-standard psychometric protocols (Bandalos, 2018; Crocker & Algina, 1986; DeVellis, 2012; McCoach et al., 2013) and …

This study extends current understanding of digital competence by exploring alternative skill sets harnessed by digitally disadvantaged groups that enable their practices to continue. By combining practice theory with the socially extended mind framework, we address the research question: What forms of offline competence support the integration of digital practices among a disadvantaged consumer group, and how do these competences influence the cohesion and continuity of their practices? Through an ethnography of a ‘Street Church’ community, we demonstrate how different forms of offline social interaction (i.e., sequential, synchronised, substitutive) and group culture
function as valuable resources for guiding digital practices, …
