Raytheon -- Strength Optimized Designs Using Additive Manufacturing, Donovan Blanpied, Reed Nelson, David Silverstein, Alex Snyder
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
Designing a structure to demonstrate the strength of 3-D printed part is more complicated than it seems. The design goal was to construct a device that demonstrates how 3-D printing can create a strength optimized design. The design must incorporate maximum strength, while not sacrificing other major components such as weight of the product, cost of the product, print time of the product and how much material is being used. Extensive research and tests were conducted on infill patterns, football helmets, and TPU material (material used in football helmets).
There are multiple infill patterns that must be considered. The most …

Effects Of Rainbow Trout On Brook Trout Population Size In Tributaries To Lake Superior In Cook County, Minnesota, Craig Tangren
Journal of Earth and Life Science
This study looked at the effects of Rainbow Trout stocking on the size of Brook Trout populations above migratory barriers. Linear mixed effects models were used to determine if there was a relationship between Brook Trout and Rainbow Trout catch rates. Age 1 or older Brook Trout populations were influenced by relative abundance of age 1 or older Rainbow Trout, according to the best supported model based on AIC scores. Population responses varied by stream, ranging along a gradient from high catch rates with a positive relationship to a negative relationship with low relative abundances. Streams with a positive relationship …

Future of Food
In collaboration with PopTech, the Center for Complexity (CfC) hosted a two day convening in March 2019 to discuss the future of food, conducted in-the-round. Conversations-in-the-round offer an experimental and collaborative forum where a variety of perspectives collide to reimagine how we should approach navigating complex challenges.
30 professionals, community leaders, ag-tech startups, policymakers, local activists, global aid administrators, and many other important voices in the food industry were in attendance. We did not set out to create solutions, rather we devoted our time to exploration — a process that allowed us to assess, discover, reality-check, and strategically plan the …

Where would today’s world be without the number system? Indeed, civilization would not have come to as far as in modern times. In fact, the software this paper is being written on is run by a computer that is embedded in numerical codes and commands– something that would not be possible if it were not for the advancement of technology using the modern number system. In this paper, we study the historical development of the modern-day number system. We investigate the classification of numbers and number properties for mathematical use; including standard functions, rules, and examples. As a culmination of …

Reactivity Of Molybdenum And Tungsten Sulfido Complexes With First-Series Transition Metals, Khalil Mudarmah
ETD Archive
Ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATTM) is an important compound in bioinorganic chemistry, with medicinal applications. Metal complexes of sulfur-containing ligands have been widely used as building block in biology and inorganic chemistry. This project aims to increase the number of Mo-S and W-S complexes that may contribute to fields such as bioinorganic and medicinal chemistry, by the preparation of heterometallic complexes containing both Mo or S and a metal of the first transition series. The homobimetallic complex anion salts (Et4N)2[Mo2(S)2(μ-S)2(edt)2] (1) and (Et4N)2[W2(S)2(μ-S)2(edt)2] (2) have been prepared from ATTM and ammonium tetrathiotungstate (ATTW) in order to start our work. The overnight treatment …
Functional Diversity And Restoration Of Meadows In Northeast Ohio, Keri Plevniak
Functional Diversity And Restoration Of Meadows In Northeast Ohio, Keri Plevniak
ETD Archive
Restoration outcomes can be variable and there is a need to understand the short- and long-term responses of the vegetation community. It is important to see if management goals are being met by evaluating restoration outcomes. Restoration goals often include establishing native species, increasing conservation value, and providing pollinator resources throughout the year. Assessing communities is commonly done though a taxonomic approach by using species presence and abundance. Another method of evaluation is through functional traits or species traits and their abundance. Both give different perspectives on how the community is achieving management goals. While taxonomic assessments can give insight …
Catalytic Waste Gasification: Water-Gas Shift & Selectivity Of Oxidation For Polyethylene, Mason J. Lang
Catalytic Waste Gasification: Water-Gas Shift & Selectivity Of Oxidation For Polyethylene, Mason J. Lang
ETD Archive
As landfills approach capacity and take up valuable land space, metropolitan areas have realized the need for waste disposal alternatives. Thus, there has been a widespread use of waste incinerators in Europe and the United States [1]; [2]. Although newer technology has made incinerators more efficient, there is an increasing interest in formulating `greener’ alternatives to incinerators. Gasification converts organic and carbonaceous materials into a combination of gaseous products known as “syngas,” or synthetic gas. This process greatly reduces the amount of hazardous emissions. The syngas produced by gasifiers has a wide range of uses, including their conversion into diesel, …
Robust Impedance Control Of A Four Degree Of Freedom Exercise Robot, Santino Joseph Bianco
Robust Impedance Control Of A Four Degree Of Freedom Exercise Robot, Santino Joseph Bianco
ETD Archive
The CSU 4OptimX exercise robot provides a platform for future research into advanced exercise and rehabilitation. The robot and its control system will autonomously modify reference trajectories and impedances on the basis of an optimization criterion and physiological feedback. To achieve this goal, a robust impedance control system with trajectory tracking must be implemented as the foundational control scheme. Two control laws will be compared, sliding mode and H-infinity control. The above robust control laws are combined with underlying impedance control laws to overcome uncertain plant model parameters and disturbance anomalies affecting the input signal. The sliding mode control law …
Do Borderline Personality Disorder Features Predict Emotion Regulation Use And Outcomes In Daily Life? An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study, Kayla Scamaldo
Do Borderline Personality Disorder Features Predict Emotion Regulation Use And Outcomes In Daily Life? An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study, Kayla Scamaldo
ETD Archive
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is associated with emotion dysregulation, reflected by frequent use of maladaptive responses and infrequent use of adaptive responses. However, studies on emotion regulation (ER) use and BPD have primarily employed survey methodology and it’s unclear whether these responses are deployed in daily life. Further, it is unclear if there are differences in the effectiveness of various ER responses among individuals with elevated BPD symptoms. Therefore, this study examined whether BPD symptoms predict increased use of maladaptive strategies, including rumination, suppression, and substance use, and decreased use of adaptive strategies, distraction and problem solving, in daily life. …
Role Of Ribosomal Protein Us9/Ys16 In Translation Initiation And Elongation In Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae., Supriya Jindal
Role Of Ribosomal Protein Us9/Ys16 In Translation Initiation And Elongation In Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae., Supriya Jindal
ETD Archive
The process of translation in all living cells is performed by ribosomes and is divided into four major steps (initiation, elongation, termination and ribosome recycling). Ribosomes consist of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and proteins and are composed of two subunits small and large. There are three major sites for tRNA binding within ribosome: the (aminoacyl) A-site which accepts the aminoacyl (aa)-tRNA; the P-site, where the peptidyl-tRNA is formed and the (exit) E-site, where deacylated tRNA exits the ribosome. These sites are formed by both rRNA and ribosomal proteins. Though rRNA are involved in the catalysis of protein synthesis, the contribution of …

Measurement Of Red Blood Cell Oxygenation State By Magnetophoresis, Nina A. Smith
Measurement Of Red Blood Cell Oxygenation State By Magnetophoresis, Nina A. Smith
ETD Archive
Magnetophoresis of red blood cells (RBCs) at varying partial pressures of oxygen (pO2) is hypothesized to rejuvenate stored blood to be utilized beyond the FDA regulated 42-day storage time. Magnetophoresis is a particle or cells motion induced by an applied magnetic field in a viscous media. The average magnetophoretic mobility of an oxygenated RBC is -0.126x10-6 mm3-s/kg, and a deoxygenated RBC is 3.66x10-6 mm3-s/kg, presenting magnetophoresis as a resource for RBC rejuvenation in hopes of storing it longer than 42 days. The main objective of this paper was to determine if controlling the pO2 within an RBC suspension, can singly- …
Investigation Of Ires-Mediated Translation Of Puma Mrna: Initiation Factor Requirements And Search For Itafs, Amra Ismail
Investigation Of Ires-Mediated Translation Of Puma Mrna: Initiation Factor Requirements And Search For Itafs, Amra Ismail
ETD Archive
Translation initiation is the rate-limiting and tightly regulated step of protein synthesis. Cap-dependent translation initiation accounts for about 95% of cellular mRNAs. Around 3-5% of cellular mRNAs have been found to contain a cis-regulatory element (IRES) which can recruit ribosomes in a cap-independent manner. IRESs support protein synthesis under cellular stress conditions when cap-dependent translation is inhibited. Differentiation in 23A2 myoblast cells can be induced by culturing cells in serum-free differentiating media (DM). During 23A2 cellular myoblast differentiation, approximately 30% of cells undergo apoptosis as a result of stress caused by serum withdrawal in order to induce differentiation. The expression …
Development Of An Spr Method To Monitor The Chemical Interaction Of Dna With A Small Reactive Molecule: Peroxynitrite As An Example, Divya Sharma
ETD Archive
Peroxynitrite is an anion with the formula ONOO-. It is an unstable structural isomer of nitrate, NO3-. Although its conjugate acid (ONOOH) is highly reactive, it is quite relatively stable in basic solutions. Generation of peroxynitrite in-vivo occurs through the diffusion-controlled reaction between superoxide anion and nitric oxide free radical. It is a strong oxidizing and nitrating agent, and its formation has been correlated with many pathological conditions. Because of its oxidizing properties, peroxynitrite can damage a wide array of molecules in cells, including DNA and proteins. Reactions of peroxynitrite with DNA, proteins, and lipids, trigger a wide array of …
