This study examined the relationship of achievable mean dose and percent volumetric overlap of salivary gland with the planning target volume (PTV) in volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plan in radiotherapy for a patient with head-and-neck cancer. The aim was to develop a model to predict the viability of planning objectives for both PTV coverage and organs-at-risk (OAR) sparing based on overlap volumes between PTVs and OARs, before the planning process. Forty patients with head-and-neck cancer were selected for this retrospective plan analysis. The patients were treated using 6 MV photons with 2-arc VMAT plan in prescriptions with simultaneous integrated boost …

Rnai Transfection Optimized In Primary Naïve B Cells For The Targeted Analysis Of Human Plasma Cell Differentiation, T. Shih, S. De, B. J. Barnes
Journal Articles
Upon antigen recognition, naïve B cells undergo rapid proliferation followed by differentiation to specialized antibody secreting cells (ASCs), called plasma cells. Increased circulating plasma cells are reported in patients with B cell-associated malignancies, chronic graft-vs.-host disease, and autoimmune disorders. Our aim was to optimize an RNAi-based method that efficiently and reproducibly knocks-down genes of interest in human primary peripheral B cells for the targeted analysis of ASC differentiation. The unique contributions of transcriptional diversity in species-specific regulatory networks and the mechanisms of gene function need to be approached directly in human B cells with tools to hone our basic inferences …

© 2019, The Author(s). The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs744373 in the bridging integrator-1 gene (BIN1) is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In the brain, BIN1 is involved in endocytosis and sustaining cytoskeleton integrity. Post-mortem and in vitro studies suggest that BIN1-associated AD risk is mediated by increased tau pathology but whether rs744373 is associated with increased tau pathology in vivo is unknown. Here we find in 89 older individuals without dementia, that BIN1 rs744373 risk-allele carriers show higher AV1451 tau-PET across brain regions corresponding to Braak stages II–VI. In contrast, the BIN1 rs744373 SNP was not associated …

© 2019 Caravaca, Gallina, Tarnawski, Tracey, Pavlov, Levine and Olofsson. Neural reflexes regulate inflammation and electrical activation of the vagus nerve reduces inflammation in models of inflammatory disease. These discoveries have generated an increasing interest in targeted neurostimulation as treatment for chronic inflammatory diseases. Data from the first clinical trials that use vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease suggest that there is a therapeutic potential of electrical VNS in diseases characterized by excessive inflammation. Accordingly, there is an interest to further explore the molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential of electrical VNS in a range …

Colorimetric Detection Of Aliphatic Alcohols In Β-Cyclodextrin Solutions, Anna Haynes, Priva Halpert, Mindy Levine
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The sensitive, selective, and practical detection of aliphatic alcohols is a continuing technical challenge with significant impact in public health research and environmental remediation efforts. Reported herein is the use of a β-cyclodextrin derivative to promote proximity-induced interactions between aliphatic alcohol analytes and a brightly colored organic dye, which resulted in highly analyte-specific color changes that enabled accurate alcohol identification. Linear discriminant analysis of the color changes enabled 100% differentiation of the colorimetric signals obtained from methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol in combination with BODIPY and Rhodamine dyes. The resulting solution-state detection system has significant broad-based applicability because it uses only …

Monitoring Biodiversity Using Aquatic Environmental Dna And Nanopore Sequencing, Jordan Callahan
SURE (Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience)
This project aimed to detect wetland organismal diversity on the Stonehill College campus by sequencing free aquatic eDNA collected from water samples in the seasonal wetland behind O’Hara Hall and Shields Science Center. The Oxford Nanopore MinION DNA sequencer offered real-time data collection at a relatively low cost and demonstrated an “in-the-field” workflow. DNA was extracted from water samples collected using a pump-filter collection apparatus. Protocols for Nanopore sequencing were established and surveys plan to be conducted in order to measure standing plant diversity around the sampling locations. Plant reads from each sample yielded plants primarily from the Brassica, Callitriche, …

Sociosexuality, Testosterone, And Life History Status: Prospective Associations And Longitudinal Changes Among Men In Cebu, Philippines, Lee T. Gettler, Patty X. Kuo, Stacy Rosenbaum, Josephine L. Avila, Thomas W. Mcdade, Christopher W. Kuzawa
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Sociosexuality is defined as an individual's interest in uncommitted sexual activity and can be measured in terms of both psychological orientations and behavioral expression. In socio-ecological contexts in which adults monogamously partner and cooperate to raise children, individuals with unrestricted sociosexuality are likely to prioritize mating/competition over committed partnering and parenting. Given the importance of mother-father cooperation in the evolutionary past, humans may have the capacity to facultatively and opportunistically downregulate sociosexuality to focus on priorities related to invested partnering and parenting. To date, no prior studies have used longitudinal data to track within-individuals changes in sociosexuality as it relates …

Melodrama ‘à la française’: Feyder and French cinema of the 1930s
By the end of 1934, Jacques Feyder had led a distinguished career in French silent cinema, had directed a critically acclaimed adaptation of Émile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin (1928) in Berlin, had returned from a three-year contract in Hollywood, had brought Le Grand Jeu to the screen (the greatest box-office success of the 1933–34 season), and appeared to be virtually unstoppable as he proceeded to direct his next film, Pension Mimosas. The film was described by one critic as ‘sans aucun doute l’une des œuvres les plus attendues …

INTRODUCTION
Bioluminescent organs in fishes that produce ventral camouflage against a background of downwelling light are very common, yet their anatomy often is poorly understood (Hastings, 1971; Young & Roper, 1976). Camouflage via ventral bioluminescence has evolved at least seven times within a wide range of teleosts (Haddock et al., 2010; Davis et al., 2014, 2016) and they vary greatly in the anatomical structures that form them (Haygood et al., 1994; Chakrabarty et al., 2011; Ghedotti et al., 2015, 2018).
The luminous roughies (genus Aulotrachichthys) have a light organ in the region of the anus that houses lumiescent bacteria in …

Temperature Affects Hatching Success Of Cocoons In The Invasive Asian Earthworm Amynthas Agrestis From The Southern Appalachians, James H. Blackmon, Melanie K. Taylor, Roberto Carrera-Martínez, Bruce A. Snyder, Mac A. Callaham
Faculty and Staff Works
Invasive Asian earthworms are increasingly common in the eastern USA where they are a major cause of terrestrial ecosystem disturbance. Among these, Amynthas agrestis (Crazy Worm, Alabama Jumper, and other common names) has been shown to alter above- and belowground food webs. Life-history traits of these earthworms are largely unknown, particularly in their invaded range. Here, we sought to answer questions about temperature effects on hatching success for cocoons of this species, using specimens collected from the southern Appalachian Mountains. We conducted 2 experiments investigating the effects of incubation temperature and the effect of varying the duration of cold temperature …

The Chloroplast And Mitochondrial Genomes Of The Green Algae Pediastrum Duplex Isolated From Central Georgia (Usa), Grayson C.R. Proulex, Blia Lor, Kalina M. Manoylov, A. Bruce Cahoon
Faculty and Staff Works
A Pediastrum duplex (Chlorophyta) strain was isolated from a freshwater system in Milledgeville, Georgia and its chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes sequenced. The chloroplast genome was 199,241 bp with 136 genes and the mitochondrial 40,756 bp with 40 genes, both were circular. Comparison of the ‘Milledgeville’ plastome to other P. duplex isolates revealed a nearly identical sequence identity to archived genes and genomic fragments from the strain UTEX1364 which was isolated from Lake Machovo in 1962. These sequences provide chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes from a wild P. duplex isolate and provide more organelle genomes for a genus with cryptic phylogenetic relationships.
Demystifying Nationwide Injunctions, Alan M. Trammell
Demystifying Nationwide Injunctions, Alan M. Trammell
Scholarly Articles
The phenomenon of nationwide injunctions—when a single district court judge completely prevents the government from enforcing a statute, regulation, or policy—has spawned a vigorous debate. A tentative consensus has emerged that an injunction should benefit only the actual plaintiffs to a lawsuit and should not apply to persons who were not parties. These critics root their arguments in various constitutional and structural constraints on federal courts, including due process, judicial hierarchy, and inherent limits on “judicial power.” Demystifying Nationwide Injunctions shows why these arguments fail.
This Article offers one of the few defenses of nationwide injunctions and is grounded in …
