The Latin-American Flavor Of Enforced Disappearances, Ariel E. Dulitzky
The Latin-American Flavor Of Enforced Disappearances, Ariel E. Dulitzky
Chicago Journal of International Law
Enforced disappearances occur when persons are deprived of their liberty by state officials, organized groups, or private individuals acting on behalf of, or with the support, direct or indirect, consent, or acquiescence of the government. The deprivation of liberty is followed by a refusal to disclose the fate or whereabouts of the persons concerned or a refusal to acknowledge the deprivation of their liberty. Consequently, such persons are placed outside the protection of the law. As such, the crime and the human rights violation of enforced disappearance comprise many different types of state repression. Given this multiplicity of scenarios in …

In an effort to identify human endothelial cell (EC)-enriched lncRNAs,~500 lncRNAswere shown to be highly restricted in primary human ECs. Among them,lncEGFL7OS, located inthe opposite strand of theEGFL7/miR-126gene, is regulated by ETS factors through abidirectional promoter in ECs. It is enriched in highly vascularized human tissues, and upregulatedin the hearts of dilated cardiomyopathy patients. LncEGFL7OS silencing impairs angiogenesis asshown by EC/fibroblast co-culture, in vitro/in vivo and ex vivo human choroid sproutingangiogenesis assays, while lncEGFL7OS overexpression has the opposite function. Mechanistically,lncEGFL7OS is required for MAPK and AKT pathway activation by regulating EGFL7/miR-126expression. MAX protein was identified as a lncEGFL7OS-interacting protein that …

Prediction Of Ice-Free Conditions For A Perennially Ice-Covered Antarctic Lake, M. K. Obryk, P. T. Doran, J. C. Priscu
Faculty Publications
©2019. American Geophysical Union. All Rights Reserved. Although perennially ice-covered Antarctic lakes have experienced variable ice thicknesses over the past several decades, future ice thickness trends and associated aquatic biological responses under projected global warming remain unknown. Heat stored in the water column in chemically stratified Antarctic lakes that have middepth temperature maxima can significantly influence the ice thickness trends via upward heat flux to the ice/water interface. We modeled the ice thickness of the west lobe of Lake Bonney, Antarctica, based on possible future climate scenarios utilizing a 1D thermodynamic model that accounts for surface radiative fluxes as well …
The Underdeveloped Innate Immunity In Embryonic Stem Cells: The Molecular Basis And Biological Perspectives From Early Embryogenesis, Yan-Lin Guo
Faculty Publications
Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) have been intensively studied as a promising cell source for regenerative medicine. The rapid advancements in the field have not only proven the feasibility of ESC‐based cell therapy, but also led to a better understanding of pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) as a unique cell population at an early stage of embryogenesis. Recent studies have revealed that both human and mouse ESCs have attenuated innate immune responses to infectious agents and inflammatory cytokines. These findings raise interesting questions about the rationale for ESCs, the PSCs experimentally derived from preimplantation stage embryos, to not have an innate defense …

A Scientometric Look At Mathematics Education From Scopus Database, Miguel Cruz Ramirez, Rafael Armando Rodriguez Devesa
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The present work offers a characterization of the development of mathematics education, based on scientometric indicators. The study analyzes 5633 documents registered in the Scopus database which are all related to research in mathematics education. The main results show an exponential increase on the scientific productivity, a tendency to increase collaborative work over individual work, a greater impact per index of the cited references during the last two decades, a high level of international collaboration, a certain concentration of the publications on a reduced group of investigators in some international impact journals, and the existence of 17 invisible colleagues that …
A Mathematical Analysis Of Student-Generated Sorting Algorithms, Audrey Nasar
A Mathematical Analysis Of Student-Generated Sorting Algorithms, Audrey Nasar
The Mathematics Enthusiast
Sorting is a process we encounter very often in everyday life. Additionally it is a fundamental operation in computer science. Having been one of the first intensely studied problems in computer science, many different sorting algorithms have been developed and analyzed. Although algorithms are often taught as part of the computer science curriculum in the context of a programming language, the study of algorithms and algorithmic thinking, including the design, construction and analysis of algorithms, has pedagogical value in mathematics education. This paper will provide an introduction to computational complexity and efficiency, without the use of a programming language. It …

Assessing The Resilience Of Adolescents Who Were Raised In Orphanages In Cairo, Egypt, Noha Emam Hassanin
Theses and Dissertations
Orphans in Egypt face discrimination at school, in the work place and when finding a marriage partner. They also are at risk for developing physical, emotional and intellectual delays as a result of residing in an orphanage. The small amount of research conducted on orphans in Egypt has focused on these deficits and the hardships. However, it may be more empowering and more effective to focus on the strengths and capabilities of these youth. In particular, during adolescence when Egyptian orphans must leave their institutions, it is especially important to understand how to support resilience and give them the tools …

God Likes Sex: Conversations Integrating Spirituality And Sexuality, Jennie Armstrong
God Likes Sex: Conversations Integrating Spirituality And Sexuality, Jennie Armstrong
Doctor of Ministry
Throughout Christian history, the Church has provided inconsistent messages about the spiritual foundation for healthy sexuality. With avoidant messages of silence and shame around sexual topics from the Church, many emergent women separate their spirituality from their sexual lives, never considering scripture as a guideline for healthy sexuality. Emergent adult women, specifically those without strong spiritual foundations, are more likely to engage in unhealthy sexual behaviors which often leave them feeling alone and separate from God and spiritual community. Because popular culture does not support marriage as a moral requirement for a sexual relationship, present cultural messages advocate that these …

Soul Journey: Rediscovering The Sacred Paths For Body, Heart, And Mind, Christopher Fillingham
Doctor of Ministry
The spiritually thirsty are leaving the church in the West. They do not find the church to be a place of spiritual wisdom and nourishment. This dissertation follows various ancient guides within Christianity to recover a life-giving spirituality for the Western Church in the twenty-first century. Chapter 1 draws on the desert monastics as it explores the lack of a transformational spirituality in the modern Church. It defines spirituality in terms of eros, clarifies the aim of spirituality as union, and explores the common reductions that have led the Church astray. Chapter 2 connects the three spiritual paths outlined in …

Irrigated agriculture is a major economic contributor of the High Plains Region and it primarily relies on the High Plains Aquifer as a source of water. Over time, areas of the High Plains Aquifer have experienced drawdowns limiting its ability to supply sufficient water to sustain fully irrigated crop production. This among other reasons, including variable climatic factors and differences in state water policy, has resulted in some areas adopting and practicing deficit irrigation management. Considerable research has been conducted across the High Plains Aquifer region to identify locally appropriate deficit irrigation strategies. This review summarizes and discusses research conducted …

Canonical and non-canonical Wnt signaling, as well as the Pax/Six gene network, are involved in patterning the freshwater sponge aquiferous system. Using computational approaches to identify transcription factor binding motifs in a freshwater sponge genome, we located putative PaxB binding sites near a Secreted Frizzled Related Protein (SFRP) gene in Ephydatia muelleri. EmSFRP is expressed throughout development, but with highest levels in juvenile sponges. In situ hybridization and antibody staining show EmSFRP expression throughout the pinacoderm and choanoderm in a subpopulation of amoeboid cells that may be differentiating archeocytes. Knockdown of EmSFRP leads to ectopic oscula formation during development, suggesting …

Connective tissue progenitors (CTPs) are defined as the heterogeneous population of tissue‐resident stem and progenitor cells that are capable of proliferating and differentiating into connective tissue phenotypes. The prevalence and variation in clonal progeny of CTPs can be characterized using a colony formation assay. However, colony assays do not directly assess the characteristics of the colony‐founding CTP. We performed large, field‐of‐view, time‐lapse microscopy to manually track colonies back to the founding cells. Image processing and analysis was used to characterize the colonies and their founding cells. We found that the traditional colony‐forming unit (CFU) assay underestimates the number of founding …

Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders And Gut-Brain Axis: What Does The Future Hold?, Kashif Mukhtar, Hasham Nawaz, Shahab Abid
Section of Gastroenterology
Despite their high prevalence, lack of understanding of the exact pathophysiology of the functional gastrointestinal disorders has restricted us to symptomatic diagnostic tools and therapies. Complex mechanisms underlying the disturbances in the bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain have a vital role in the pathogenesis and are key to our understanding of the disease phenomenon. Although we have come a long way in our understanding of these complex disorders with the help of studies on animals especially rodents, there need to be more studies in humans, especially to identify the therapeutic targets. This review study looks at …
The Emergence Of The Environmental Impact Assessment Duty As A Global Legal Norm And General Principle Of Law, Tseming Yang
The Emergence Of The Environmental Impact Assessment Duty As A Global Legal Norm And General Principle Of Law, Tseming Yang
UC Law Journal
More than half a century ago, Rudolf Schlesinger announced a global survey of legal principles in the pages of the American Journal of International Law. The project’s objective was the identification of a “common core” of legal norms among the family of nations and the ultimate goal the production of something akin to a global restatement of law. Such an endeavor was to yield global principles of law, ultimately giving substance to the General Principles of Law provision under Article 38 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice. In spite of the initial enthusiasm surrounding the project, its …

Cardiogenesis is interdependent with blood flow within the embryonic system. Recently, a number of studies have begun to elucidate the effects of hemodynamic forces acting upon and within cells as the cardiovascular system begins to develop. Changes in flow are picked up by mechanosensors in endocardial cells exposed to wall shear stress (the tangential force exerted by blood flow) and by myocardial and mesenchymal cells exposed to cyclic strain (deformation). Mechanosensors stimulate a variety of mechanotransduction pathways which elicit functional cellular responses in order to coordinate the structural development of the heart and cardiovascular system. The looping stages of heart …

Viscosities and diffusion rates of organics within secondary organic aerosol (SOA) remain uncertain. Using the bead-mobility technique, we measured viscosities as a function of water activity (aw) of SOA generated by the ozonolysis of limonene followed by browning by exposure to NH3 (referred to as brown limonene SOA or brown LSOA). These measurements together with viscosity measurements reported in the literature show that the viscosity of brown LSOA increases by 3–5 orders of magnitude as the aw decreases from 0.9 to approximately 0.05. In addition, we measured diffusion coefficients of intrinsic fluorescent organic molecules within brown …

Climate Change And Occupational Health: Are There Limits To Our Ability To Adapt?, Marcus Dillender
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This study considers the relationship between temperature and occupational health. The results indicate that both high and low temperatures increase injury rates and that high temperatures have more severe adverse effects in warmer climates, which suggests that avoiding the adverse effects of high temperatures may be easier for workers when hot days are rarer. While research on the effect of temperature on mortality finds substantial capacity for adaption with current technology, the results presented here suggest that outdoor workers face challenges in adapting to high temperatures.
