Counter-Ideology As A Wider Strategy For Defeating The Boko Haram Terrorist Group, Kwesi Ayima
Counter-Ideology As A Wider Strategy For Defeating The Boko Haram Terrorist Group, Kwesi Ayima
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a need to address current military strategies to defeat the resilience of the Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) group. The purpose of this qualitative study was to provide a counter-ideology framework as an alternative strategy to defeat the group. The relational/vengeance and relative deprivation theories provided the theoretical foundation for the study, and the research question addressed the extent to which counter-ideology strategies can be instituted to defeat the BHT group. Data were collected through semi structured interviews from 20 participants who were Muslim clerics, community leaders, and military personnel, and data were analyzed using Nvivo software. The themes …

Zoning, Race, And Marijuana: The Unintended Consequences Of Proposition 64, Alexis Holmes
Zoning, Race, And Marijuana: The Unintended Consequences Of Proposition 64, Alexis Holmes
Lewis & Clark Law Review
This Article revisits the campaign to legalize cannabis in California with Proposition 64. It then dissects the localism within the new California regulations and how it conflicts with the social justice goals central to the spirit of Proposition 64’s passage. With local governments retaining control over marijuana in their jurisdictions, land use takes on new importance with respect to how marijuana will be controlled. The problem is that the land use system, like the criminal law apparatus, has yet to overcome systemic racism that is inherently part of its design. Proposition 64 wrongly relied on local control to regulate marijuana …
Marijuana Legalization, Racial Disparity, And The Hope For Reform, Michael Vitiello
Marijuana Legalization, Racial Disparity, And The Hope For Reform, Michael Vitiello
Lewis & Clark Law Review
The criminalization of marijuana is rooted in a deeply racist history and has devastated minority communities. Studies show that usage of the drug is consistent across racial groups, but arrests of minorities are nevertheless higher than arrests of white offenders. Indeed, those kinds of disparities have persuaded some voters and policy makers to support legalization of marijuana.
California’s initiative, Proposition 64, passed in November 2016 and is now being implemented statewide. Drafters of Proposition 64 were aware of the racial disparity in enforcement of marijuana laws and attempted to offer a remedy. This Article asks whether Proposition 64 can achieve …

Assessing The Relational Nature Of Child Physical Abuse And Neglect Among 12-Year-Old Girls, Corrine Ann Dale
Assessing The Relational Nature Of Child Physical Abuse And Neglect Among 12-Year-Old Girls, Corrine Ann Dale
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Child maltreatment is a historical and current problem in the United States. Children are exposed to physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse in alarming numbers. In 2014, state agencies found an estimated 702,000 victims of child maltreatment. With two thirds of this group representing child neglect victims, research studies and effective interventions are needed for this group in particular. This study examined the relational nature of child neglect versus child physical abuse. The sample population consisted of 68 girls aged 12 years old at the Midwest site of the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect research project. The secondary …

Effects Of Mental Health Programs On School Violence, Lillian R. Gray
Effects Of Mental Health Programs On School Violence, Lillian R. Gray
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Bullying, defined as any unwanted aggressive behavior(s) by another youth or group of youths who are not siblings or current dating partners that involves an observed or perceived power imbalance and is repeated multiple times or is highly likely to be repeated, is becoming an epidemic in our schools, with rates of victimization rising (Donegan, 2012). This thesis examines mental health programs already established within schools, as well as schools where students do not have access to mental health resources and compares the amount of violence that is perpetrated within these schools. Next, this study explores the relationship between bullying …

The Bioarchaeology Of The Tugalo Site (9st1): Diet, Disease, And Health Of The Past, Nompumelelo Beryl Hlophe
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The Tugalo site is a prehistoric and early historic Native American site located in northeast Georgia along the upper Savannah River basin, near the junction of Toccoa Creek and the Tugalo River. According to archaeological materials analyzed from the site it was occupied from ca. A.D. 1100 to 1600 (Anderson et al. 1995). Although archaeological investigations of the site revealed basic characteristics of its chronology and architecture, very little analysis and reporting of the skeletal remains from Tugalo has been completed. By analyzing data collected by Williamson (1998) concerning the age and sex of the burials, the presence or absence …

Fostering Students' Civic Skills: Education For Sustainable Democracy, Atakan Ata
Fostering Students' Civic Skills: Education For Sustainable Democracy, Atakan Ata
Georgia Educational Researcher
This qualitative study explored factors that supported teachers in their efforts to promote students’ critiquing, communicating, and collaborating skills. Despite the various challenges that public schools face today, they are most likely the very institutions to play a critical role in individuals’ civic skills development. Individual in-depth interviews were the primary method used to understand the participants’ perspectives on instruction and the factors that foster students’ civic skills. Factors that supported the participants in their efforts to promote civic skills among their students were found to be teacher collaboration, planning, and teacher motivation. Details and the implications of the findings …

Social Support Theory, Lisa A. Kort-Butler
Social Support Theory, Lisa A. Kort-Butler
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
In the study of crime and delinquency, what has come to be called social support theory has. its origins in Drennon-Gala’s research (1994, 1995) and Cullen’s (1994) presidential address to the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. In the address, entitled “Social support as an organizing concept for criminology,” Cullen argued that the notion of social support is threaded through many theories of crime and delinquency. Cullen distinguished between macro-level and interpersonal-level effects of social support, emphasizing how supportive societies and supportive relationships, respectively, can lessen crime rates and individual crime. He also implicated social support in the processes of social …
Fourth Amendment Gloss, Aziz Z. Huq
Fourth Amendment Gloss, Aziz Z. Huq
Northwestern University Law Review
Conventional wisdom suggests that a constitutional right should be defined so as to effectively constrain government actors. A right defined in terms of what state actors routinely do would seem to impose in practice an ineffectual brake on much intrusive state action—and so seems pointless. Nevertheless, in defining Fourth Amendment rights, the Supreme Court frequently draws on the practice of contemporaneous government actors to define the constitutional floor for police action. The actions of the regulated thus define the content of regulation. This Article isolates and analyzes this seemingly paradoxical judicial practice, which it labels “Fourth Amendment gloss,” by analogy …
The Long Wait For An Improbable Death: A Look At Delays In Executions In Kansas And Possible Reforms To Capital Punishment, Amy M. Memmer, Melanie K. Worsley, Brenda I. Rowe
The Long Wait For An Improbable Death: A Look At Delays In Executions In Kansas And Possible Reforms To Capital Punishment, Amy M. Memmer, Melanie K. Worsley, Brenda I. Rowe
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications (Archived)
This article uses Kansas as a case study to show how in Kansas, as in many other states in the United States, the execution of a death sentence is so improbable, and the delays that precede it so extraordinary, that any arguable deterrent or retributive effect capital punishment might once have had has been severely diminished. This article considers possible reforms to the capital punishment system aimed at reducing the delay between sentencing and execution, and the risks that would accompany those reforms. This article also considers whether capital punishment should still be considered a viable option for states in …

Does Insider Trading Pay? An Analysis Of Trading And Tipping Activities In Insider Trading Litigation, Aneta Spaic, Claire Nolasco, Lily Chi-Fang Tsai, Michael S. Vaughn
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications (Archived)
Purpose
This paper analyzes trading and tipping activities in insider trading litigation decided by federal courts from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2014.
Design/methodology/approach
Legal documents from the US Securities and Exchange Commission, LexisNexis and Westlaw databases were coded to determine profile, patterns of trading and settlement outcomes.
Findings
Results of statistical analysis indicate that a defendant in both civil and criminal cases is more likely to trade on the information when he/she receives a direct, financial benefit from breaching his/her duty of confidentiality. The defendant tipper is also more likely to pass on the information to a close …
Unconstitutionally Illegitimate Discrimination, Brandon L. Garrett
Unconstitutionally Illegitimate Discrimination, Brandon L. Garrett
Faculty Scholarship
When government officials express intent to disparage or discriminate against a group, the constitutional consequences can be severe, but they are rarely imposed. In this Article, I argue that discriminatory motive is and should be enough to declare government acts unconstitutional. Second, I argue that the main reason why is the harm to government legitimacy. While some argue that the concern with intentional discrimination is its harm, such as its stigmatizing effect, I argue that the focus should not be on harm, but on how it delegitimizes government. I make the descriptive claim that Constitutional doctrine, in its broad outlines, …
The Geography Of Crime: Placing Geographers In The Space Of Criminologists, Anthony Wv Piscitelli
The Geography Of Crime: Placing Geographers In The Space Of Criminologists, Anthony Wv Piscitelli
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The Geography of Crime consists of five articles. The first article, Exploring opportunities for geographers to explain the spatial distribution of crime, serves as a key conceptual link between each of the other four articles. This paper provides a broad introduction to the dissertation showing what gaps in the crime literature exist, especially those ripe for analysis by geographers. Three primary directions emerged as a focus of this dissertation: overarching theoretical contributions, specialized geographic quantitative techniques, and qualitative approaches centred on the concept of place.
The second article, Connecting social disorganization theory to broken windows and routine activities proposes …
“Waha Ehsa Tha, Idhar Ehsa Hai” (It Was Like That Back Home, But It Is Like This Here): Family Violence Experiences Of Indian And Pakistani Immigrant Women In The Greater Toronto Area, Dhwani Joshi
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
There is a paucity of qualitative scholarship on Indian and Pakistani immigrant women’s experiences of family violence. Further, existing scholarship on this topic seldom explores the unique experiences of distinct South Asian groups such as Indian and Pakistani immigrant women. This thesis addressed this gap in the literature by qualitatively examining family violence among immigrant Indian and Pakistani women in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). A case study methodology was used to explore two research questions: 1) What are the cultural specificities of family violence as experienced by Indian and Pakistani immigrant women in the GTA? and 2) How are …

Over 80% of Canadians use the Internet and approximately 20 million Canadians are active on social media networks. It is not surprising that criminal activity is taking place in these global digital communities and this is raising challenges for criminal law and the criminal justice system. The Supreme Court of Canada recently recognized in R. v. K.R.J. that “[t]he rate of technological change over the past decade has fundamentally altered the social context” in which certain crimes are occurring and social media networks have given “unprecedented access to potential victims and avenues” for offending.
This annotated Criminal Code aims to …
Prevention And Education: A Case Study Of An Anti-Human Trafficking Nongovernmental Organization In Mumbai, India, Danielle Kraaijvanger
Prevention And Education: A Case Study Of An Anti-Human Trafficking Nongovernmental Organization In Mumbai, India, Danielle Kraaijvanger
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of community-based NGOs in developing and delivering prevention interventions and nonformal education programs that work to end human trafficking of at-risk women and children. Specifically, the study explored the intersection between human trafficking and education, and the critical role NGOs play in human trafficking prevention. Essential to understanding this phenomenon was giving voice to the experiences of children who are the recipients of such prevention and education interventions.
An international community-based, anti-human trafficking NGO—Prerana—served as the case study setting. Direct observations and participant interviews …
