It’S All About The Ruff: Utilizing Therapy Dogs To Address Trauma In Domestic Violence Settings, John R. Chapin, Grace A. Coleman, Michael Brayack
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Within the context of victims and violence, this study serves multiple purposes: (1) to explore the impact of pet ownership on children and adolescents within the context of bullying and school violence; (2) to document the impact of therapy animals on domestic violence victims; (3) to document the impact of working canines in courts on domestic violence victims. Findings from three surveys (1,648 children and adolescents in school; 12 child counseling clients; 41 adult domestic violence counseling clients; and 69 domestic violence victims in court) contribute to a growing literature documenting the psychological benefits of interacting with pets and animals …

A Historical-Discourse Policy Analysis Of Arkansas' Educational Policies: A Post-Marxist, Gramscian Perspective, Matti Izora Ibrahim
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
ABSTRACT A HISTORICAL-DISCOURSE POLICY ANALYSIS OF ARKANSAS’ EDUCATIONAL POLICIES: A POST-MARXIST, GRAMSCIAN PERSPECTIVE Matti Izora Ibrahim Few studies have explored the macro-level factors that influence education. This research examines how political forces shaping K-12 education in Arkansas connect to broader global political trends. Grounded in a post-Marxist, Gramscian framework, the research employs a Discourse-Historical Approach (Wodak, 2001) to examine the rhetorical construction of the language in Arkansas Act 327 (2023), commonly known as the LEARNS Act, and Executive Order EO 23-05, the executive order which preceded it. Accordingly, this research examines whether these policies reflect broader global political patterns by …

How Gender, Verbal Assertiveness, And Relationship Status Correlate To The Ascription Of Responsibility In Sexual, Catherine Carvalho
How Gender, Verbal Assertiveness, And Relationship Status Correlate To The Ascription Of Responsibility In Sexual, Catherine Carvalho
Honors Theses
Acquiesced sex is “consenting to and engaging in undesired sexual activity” (Benoit & Ronis, 2022, p. 577). Research has found that perceptions of acquiesced sex are related to demographic variables, such as gender, and conditions, such as the relationship status of actors in a vignette. The present study considers whether variables such as gender and verbal assertiveness of the research participant affects ascription of responsibility for acquiesced heterosexual sex across two conditions (stranger and dating couple). Data were collected through an online survey administered to undergraduate and graduate University of New Haven students. Results indicate that participants' gender, general assertiveness, …

Imposing Restrictions On The First Step Act’S Retroactive Application To Vacated Sentences, Isabelle M. Carbajales, Lauren O’Neil Hamilton
Imposing Restrictions On The First Step Act’S Retroactive Application To Vacated Sentences, Isabelle M. Carbajales, Lauren O’Neil Hamilton
University of Miami Law Review
The First Step Act has been called “the most significant criminal justice reform bill in a generation.” Until recently, the Eleventh Circuit had not weighed in on whether Section 403 of the First Step Act’s sentencing reforms applies to defendants whose initial sentences were vacated and who face resentencing after the Act’s enactment. On July 2, 2024, the Supreme Court agreed to squarely consider this issue, despite the Department of Justice siding with defendants yet calling the issue “shallow.” On July 8, 2024, the Eleventh Circuit held these defendants are not entitled to the benefits of the First Step Act …

What’S In A Name? How The Eleventh Circuit Ignored The Fourth Amendment To Hold That A Warrant For One Person Authorizes The Detention Of Others, Jared Mcclain, Dylan Moore
University of Miami Law Review
Odds are, your name isn’t all that unique. Most people share the same first and last name with hundreds, if not thousands, of other Americans. The frequency with which people share a name raises an important question of civil rights: What happens when officers arrest and detain an innocent person based on an arrest warrant that was issued for someone else with the same name?
In the Eleventh Circuit, the answer is almost always “nothing.” So long as a mistaken detention lasts three days or fewer, officers are free from accountability for apprehending the innocent—even if those officers have good …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Teachers' Perceptions Of School Security Measures, Rozetta Michelle Isaac
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study explored the lived experiences of six middle school teachers who provided their perceptions of school safety measures at their work locations. This phenomenological qualitative study aimed to examine whether the participants feel safe while at work. The theoretical framework that guided this study was PET (Punctuated Equilibrium Theory) which focuses on policy change over time. Participants were given a survey questionnaire to answer. The survey questionnaire contained open-ended survey questions. The survey was utilized in lieu of in-person interviews (due to COVID -19 restrictions). Participants were asked open-ended questions about their experiences and perceptions regarding school safety measures. …

Do I Feel Safe At School? A Study Of Student And Teacher Perceptions Of School Safety Measures, Dayton-Turner K. Billington
Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning
This study examined student and teacher perceptions of current school safety measures. It explored feelings of safety among high school students and their classroom teacher, focusing on their perspectives regarding school safety measures and school resource officers (SROs). Students took a survey asking their thoughts regarding current school safety measures using Likert scale questions as well as drawing a picture and writing a describing paragraph regarding their perceptions of safety. From the survey results, 11 students were selected to be a part of two separate focus group interviews. The qualitative data was analyzed using the constant comparative method, while the …

Minority Stressors As Predictor Variables For Animal Abuse In Lgbtq Same-Sex Relationships With Interpersonal Violence, S Paige Brenner
Minority Stressors As Predictor Variables For Animal Abuse In Lgbtq Same-Sex Relationships With Interpersonal Violence, S Paige Brenner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
LGBTQ individuals face a distinct set of societal issues that can lead to intimate partner violence (IPV) and animal abuse together. Grounded in minority stress theory, the purpose of the study was to reduce animal abuse in LGBTQ male and female same-sex relationships by examining the co-occurrence of internalized homophobia, degree of outness, and IPV. The hypotheses for the study include whether internalized homophobia and degree of outness predict animal abuse in LGBTQ same-sex relationships experiencing IPV. This study was conducted with a population of individuals (N = 149) with inclusion criteria of being 18 years of age or older, …
Robots And (Indian) Reservations: A Jurisdictional Nightmare Waiting To Happen, Adam Crepelle
Robots And (Indian) Reservations: A Jurisdictional Nightmare Waiting To Happen, Adam Crepelle
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
Advances in artificial intelligence are expanding the possibilities of robots. Indeed, robots are now engaging in numerous activities previously thought to require human cognition, such as driving cars and diagnosing diseases. Scholars have published numerous articles examining the intersection of law and robots across myriad fields. However, legal scholarship has yet to explore the relationship between robots and federal Indian law. This is a significant oversight because there are 574 federally recognized tribes and over fifty-six million acres of Indian country. Thus, legal issues involving tribes and robots are inevitable. This is the first law review article dedicated to exploring …
Achieving Health Equity For Minorities, Marginalized And Vulnerable Populations: The Ethical Challenge For Improving Addiction Health Services And Policies In The Health Care System, Jasia A. Baig
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the past few decades, health disparities and substance misuse have transformed into unprecedented healthcare crises facing contemporary society. Although enormous contributions through policies and interventions have been made to promote health equity, substantial health inequalities and disparities persist, particularly in addiction health services and policies at multiple healthcare system levels for the marginalized, minoritized, and vulnerable populations.
The thesis of this dissertation asserts that a biopsychosocial ‘systems’ thinking towards treating addictive disorders along with systematic interventions and coordinated improvements specifically focused on minorities, marginalized and vulnerable populations at research, clinical, public health and global levels will significantly reduce health …

Enhancing Diversion Success Through Financial Capability And Asset Building: A Framework And Proposed Intervention, Lissa Johnson, Margaret S. Sherraden, Carrie Pettus, Jude Miller, Jin Huang
Center for Social Development Research
Mass incarceration policies in the United States have generated the highest incarceration rate in the world, yet many incarcerated individuals have committed nonviolent offenses or been confined because they could not pay fines or fees. Diversion offers an opportunity for justice-involved individuals to avoid conviction and collateral consequences while maximizing public safety, reducing case processing, decreasing overpopulation in prisons, and lowering costs. However, diversion programs do not adequately address financial instability and insecurity that often contribute to criminal behavior. This paper reviews evidence on adult diversion programs and proposes an intervention approach responding to socioeconomic factors contributing to criminal behavior.

Procedural Rights Of The Military Accused: Advantages Over A Civilian Defendant, Homer E. Moyer Jr.
Procedural Rights Of The Military Accused: Advantages Over A Civilian Defendant, Homer E. Moyer Jr.
Maine Law Review
The Supreme Court recently decided in O'Callahan v. Parker that the military lacks jurisdiction to try servicemen for crimes that are not "service-connected." Justice Douglas, in rendering the majority opinion, was highly critical of military justice and criminal procedures in the court-martial system, which he characterized as "a system of specialized military courts, proceeding by practices different from those obtaining in the regular courts and in general less favorable to defendants . . . . .” The opinion further added that "courts-martial as an institution are singularly inept in dealing with the nice subtleties of constitutional law . . . …

Bernier V. State - The Right To Counsel In Entrustment Revocation Proceedings, Peter J. Detroy
Bernier V. State - The Right To Counsel In Entrustment Revocation Proceedings, Peter J. Detroy
Maine Law Review
Theodore Bernier was adjudicated a juvenile offender in September, 1966, and was subsequently committed to the Boys Training Center (BTC) for the term of his minority. In February, 1968, he was released on entrustment to his parents. Almost a year and a half later, Bernier was questioned by local police regarding his possible involvement in the theft of greenstamps from a local store. Although he was released without the police taking further action, they notified an aftercare and placement worker assigned to the BTC of the questioning. As a result, the BTC revoked the entrustment, and the police took him …
Extending The Smith V. Hooey Duty To The Holding Jurisdiction, Ronald D. Russell
Extending The Smith V. Hooey Duty To The Holding Jurisdiction, Ronald D. Russell
Maine Law Review
The right to a speedy trial has been an integral part of the Anglo-American legal system since its foundation. The first statement of this guarantee seems to be in the codification of basic rights included in the Magna Charta. It was incorporated into the earliest laws of colonial America and later expressed in the sixth amendment to the Constitution. In Klopfer v. North Carolina, the United States Supreme Court stated, "The history of the right to a speedy trial and its reception in this country clearly establish that it is one of the most basic rights preserved by our Constitution." …

African American Men’S Perception Of Fear Of A Deadly Encounter With Police During Traffic Stops In Detroit, Delshawn King
African American Men’S Perception Of Fear Of A Deadly Encounter With Police During Traffic Stops In Detroit, Delshawn King
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative, phenomenological study is an examination of the fear of deadly encounters during traffic stops as experienced by seven African American men in Detroit. This fear is rooted in the historical context of slavery, where laws permitted the use of force to control African Americans. Using the critical race theory framework, the impact of traffic stops on African American men was explored, including how these encounters contribute to fear, psychological distress, and potential escalation of violence in interactions with law enforcement. The study shows that the fear of police encounters significantly impacts the psychological well-being, trust, and security of …

Understanding The Treatment Experiences Of African American Women, Kimberly La'sharne Hillery-Bottorf
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American women experience trauma at disproportionately higher rates than any other group, yet limited studies focus specifically on African American women with self-reported co-occurring substance use disorder and PTSD and their experiences in seeking and remaining in outpatient treatment. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how this group defines trauma, its impact on their treatment experiences, and the sociocultural factors that influenced their decisions to seek help and remain in treatment. The research questions posed asked about the experiences of African American women over 31 years of age with co-occurring substance use and PTSD, how they …
