(Un)Civil Denaturalization, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Irina D. Manta Jan 2019

(Un)Civil Denaturalization, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Irina D. Manta

Faculty Publications

Over the last fifty years, naturalized citizens in the United States were able to feel a sense of finality and security in their rights. Denaturalization, wielded frequently as a political tool in the McCarthy era, had become exceedingly rare. Indeed, denaturalization was best known as an adjunct to criminal proceedings brought against former Nazis and other war criminals who had entered the country under false pretenses.

Denaturalization is no longer so rare. Naturalized citizens’ sense of security has been fundamentally shaken by policy developments in the last five years. The number of denaturalization cases is growing, and if current trends …

Evaluating Project Safe Neighborhoods In Connecticut: A Youth Opportunity Initiative, Sara A. Jeffries, David Myers, Jonathan A. Kringen, Ron Schack

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Despite containing numerous wealthy geographic areas, the state of Connecticut continues to struggle with social and economic distress, along with gun-related crime. Problem analysis in urban areas revealed a critical need for services aimed at deterring violent and gun-related crime in two target populations: serious juvenile offenders, aged 14–17 years, and at-risk youth, aged 11–13 years. Using a quasi-experimental design, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) on youth in two cities in Connecticut. Implementation resulted in 133 young people receiving a variety of services in New Haven and Bridgeport. Evaluation research assessed intervention efforts …

School Security: A Study Of Existing Measures And Plausible Solutions To Better Secure Students, Jonathon D. Julius

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was to find out the current status of school safety in regard to how school buildings are secured and how much the staff is trained on how to handle security related issues. The research was based on the differences between rural, suburban, and urban schools in the state of Illinois. My interest in this topic is a result of a decade of my life being devoted to public safety as a law enforcement officer. As a current educator, I still have an interest in the intricacies of safety as it relates to school settings. …

Evidence-Based, Constitutionally-Sound Approaches To Reducing Gun Fatalities In Violent Relationships, Sarah Martin Jan 2019

Evidence-Based, Constitutionally-Sound Approaches To Reducing Gun Fatalities In Violent Relationships, Sarah Martin

Belmont Law Review

Our country is plagued by a uniquely American epidemic whereby women are shot to death by partners who say they love them. While domestic violence is a complex matter and preventing domestic abuse and domestic violence-related fatalities seems like a daunting task, the first steps are relatively simple: (1) close persistent gaps in existing firearms laws that allow dangerous abusers to obtain and continue to possess firearms, and (2) enforce existing laws regarding firearms. Ensuring that domestic abusers do not have access to deadly weapons is an evidence-based strategy to protect vulnerable victims of an otherwise seemingly unending cycle of …

The Hermeneutics Of Policing: An Analysis Of Law And Order Technocracy, Jason Blakely Jan 2019

The Hermeneutics Of Policing: An Analysis Of Law And Order Technocracy, Jason Blakely

All Faculty Open Access Publications

Contemporary American policing practices are marked by increasingly top-down, racialized, militarized, and pseudo-scientific features. Social scientists have played a central role in creating this political situation: social-scientific advocates of “law and order,” far from providing a value-neutral description of social reality, appear instead to have contributed to the creation of a peculiarly modern form of power.

College Students’ Views On Drug Policy In The United States: The Impact Of Reading Michelle Alexander’S The New Jim Crow, Richard D. Clark, Gloria S. Vaquera, Kenneth S. Chaplin

2019 Faculty Bibliography

Using a quasi-experimental research design to test the “Marshall Hypothesis,” we investigated the effects of reading Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration and the Age of Colorblindness on college students’ views of drug policy in the United States. One hundred and twenty-eight undergraduate stu- dents at a predominantly white Midwest university took part in this study. Test subjects read the text and took both a pre- and posttest questionnaire, while a control group of students, who did not read the book, was also surveyed concerning their views on drug policies. Additionally, reflective essays written by the test population …

Just Punishment?: The Epistemic And Affective Investments In Carceral Feminism, Tess Joseph Jan 2019

Just Punishment?: The Epistemic And Affective Investments In Carceral Feminism, Tess Joseph

Honors Papers

This thesis draws upon recent works in feminist theory, epistemological theory, affect theory, and abolitionist theory to critically engage with contemporary U.S. forms of “carceral feminism,” Elizabeth Bernstein’s (2010) concept that describes the recasting of feminist politics in carceral terms. I expand upon Bernstein to contend that we must direct attention to our epistemic and affective conditions to understand our investments in carceral feminism.

I begin by mapping the origins of carceral feminism, first tracing its history through a discussion of the initial iterations of colonialism and enslavement. Turning to a more recent timeline of the mainstream feminist anti-violence movement—a …

Conflict Management Training In Video-Based Teams, Alexis Ward Jan 2019

Conflict Management Training In Video-Based Teams, Alexis Ward

Master's Theses

In the wake of an emerging economy that demands organizational agility, globalization and an increasing number of independent contractors, corporations have exponentially incorporated virtual teams in their organizations. However, despite their financial and geographical convenience, research has indicated that virtual teams have consistently experienced more conflict and lowered performance and satisfaction levels than that of their traditional counterparts. The present study sought to examine whether conflict management training could help video based virtual teams demonstrate more positive conflict handling techniques and less negative techniques, which would result in higher group process and group outcome satisfaction. This study did not find …
