Restorative Injustice: A Study Of Failed Implementation Of Restorative Practices At An Urban High School, Paul Gerard Cama
Restorative Injustice: A Study Of Failed Implementation Of Restorative Practices At An Urban High School, Paul Gerard Cama
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The restorative justice process utilizes various intervention strategies created by indigenous tribes throughout the world, as an alternative to procedural justice (Zehr, 2002). In modern education, restorative justice was incorporated into the public-school system, where it has evolved into a preemptive measure to combat punitive discipline policies that is often seen as both racially insensitive and detrimental to the learning of students. The purpose of this study was to examine the implementation process of a school based restorative justice program at an urban high school and focused on how these interventions were implemented, what resources were allocated, and how it …

Felon Disenfranchisement, Nora V. Demleitner
Felon Disenfranchisement, Nora V. Demleitner
Scholarly Articles
In its broadest forms, felon disenfranchisement excludes even individuals who have long been rehabilitated. Yet they are still treated only as partial citizens. Automatic, long-term restrictions on the franchise are unnecessarily exclusionary. More importantly, they hinder reentry and rehabilitation. Citizens returning from imprisonment, who can vote, have lower rates of recidivism than those who are barred from voting. Re-enfranchisement signals a return to citizenship. It advances and confirms a returning citizen’s full participatory rights. Ultimately, that means we recognize these individuals as having lived up to the expectation of rehabilitation rather than leaving them feeling defeated.

Judge Damon Keith: The Judicial Antidote To Judge Julius Hoffman Challenging Claims Of Unilateral Executive Authority, Ellen Yaroshevsky
Judge Damon Keith: The Judicial Antidote To Judge Julius Hoffman Challenging Claims Of Unilateral Executive Authority, Ellen Yaroshevsky
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
From some of the highly-publicized trials of the 1960s—namely the trials of the Chicago Eight, Panther Twenty-One, and Weathermen—we can draw indispensable lessons about the role of the judges in upholding and promoting a fair justice system. The contrast to Judge Julius Hoffman’s notorious injudicious conduct in the Chicago Eight case is the courageous, thoughtful Judge Damon Keith, in the less publicized White Panther case in Detroit in the early 1970s. Judge Keith’s overriding sense of fairness exemplified the best of judicial independence in considering President Nixon’s claims of unilateral executive authority in United States v. Ayers and United States …

Mindful Awareness Training: A Pilot Study Integrating Mindfulness Practices Into A Rural Jail-Based Substance Abuse Program, John Paulson, Veronica Huggins, Douglas A. Gentile
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
Mindfulness practices are now utilized in a variety of behavioral healthcare settings, including the criminal justice system. This article summarizes the findings of a pilot project incorporating mindfulness practices into a jail-based substance abuse program in a rural county jail. Participants that engaged in a psychoeducational mindfulness group that utilized practices adapted from the Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) curriculum had improved scores on measures of mindfulness, self-compassion, and quality of life. A mediated path model suggested that the length of time participants were involved in the group and their estimated amount of mindfulness practice outside the group was related to …

Sexual Assault & Alcohol Consumption In First- And Non-First-Generation College Students, Claire Luce, Laura E. T. Swan, Danielle M. Dick, Karen Chartier
Sexual Assault & Alcohol Consumption In First- And Non-First-Generation College Students, Claire Luce, Laura E. T. Swan, Danielle M. Dick, Karen Chartier
Social Work Publications
Studies show the connection between experiences of sexual assault and increased alcohol consumption, but there is limited research about how sexual assault affects alcohol use in sub-populations, such as first-generation college students, who experience significant stress but often have limited resources devoted to meeting their needs. We hypothesize that: (1) college students who report experiencing recent sexual assault will report consuming more alcohol than students who do not report sexual assault; and (2) college-generation status will have a moderating effect on this relationship. Data were from a longitudinal study on substance use and behavioral health by students at a large, …

Implementing And Sustaining Trauma-Informed Care: An Exploration Of Staff Attitudes, Beliefs, And Experiences, Aaron Muttillo
Implementing And Sustaining Trauma-Informed Care: An Exploration Of Staff Attitudes, Beliefs, And Experiences, Aaron Muttillo
ETD Archive
There is optimism that the effects of childhood adversity can be mitigated through trauma-informed care (TIC) practices in school settings. This study investigated a nonprofit child-serving organization’s experience with implementing and sustaining TIC. At both the organizational and individual level, factors exist that complicate the application ofTIC principles. This case study utilized a mixed methods approach to better understand staff’s conceptualization of TIC, their attitudes concerning TIC, and their experiences using TIC practices. After nearly a decade since TIC was first implemented, the study found that staff continue to maintain favorable attitudes toward TIC while their articulation ofTIC practices varied. …

A Collaborative Governance Approach To Partnerships Addressing Public Problems With Private Data, Iryna Susha, J. Ramon Gil-Garcia
A Collaborative Governance Approach To Partnerships Addressing Public Problems With Private Data, Iryna Susha, J. Ramon Gil-Garcia
Center for Technology in Government
The recent explosion of data, which is generated, collected, and exchanged, opens up new opportunities and poses new challenges.Actors in different sectors have recently begun to explore how they can work together and leverage these data to help address ‘wicked’ problems.A novel form of cross-sector partnership emerges, labeled “data collaborative,” which is normally focused on accessing private sector data and using it to address complex public problems. While there is emerging knowledge about how data can be shared in such partnerships, less is known about the collaboration dynamics of these partnerships. In this paper, we examine this problem from the perspective of …

An Assessment Of The Perceptions Of School Professionals Regarding Prenatal Substance Exposure, Aliyah Vicia Mickey
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Children who have been prenatally exposed to drugs are at higher risk of experiencing academic and behavioral difficulties as they become students. Current research is limited on the specific long-term social-emotional, behavioral, and cognitive effects for school-aged children. As these children advance into the schools, they need knowledgeable school professionals and evidence-based interventions that will support their academic and behavioral well-being. The purpose of the current investigation served to gather information regarding school professionals’ experiences, knowledge, and self-efficacy related to prenatal substance exposure of students. The results from the survey indicated school professionals are reporting having general knowledge of facets …
