An Overview Of The Drug Epidemic In The United States With A Focus On Opioids, Cocaine, And Marijuana, Gregg Lincoln
An Overview Of The Drug Epidemic In The United States With A Focus On Opioids, Cocaine, And Marijuana, Gregg Lincoln
Integrated Studies
The prescription drug epidemic and illegal drug crisis has been at a steady incline for the last few decades. The United States have recently seen a rapid increase in overdose deaths, E.R. visits, and reports of misuse of prescription opioids and drug abuse (Meyer, Patel, Rattana, Quock, & Mody, 2014, p. 380). Part of the problem stems from doctors that write prescriptions for any ache or pain without thought for the potential addiction and destruction that it can cause if not used responsibly (Malinowski, 2018, p. 1032). As of 2016, at least 174 people die every day in the U.S. …

Medication-Assisted Treatment: Barrier Or Facilitator, Justin Colley, Justin Colley
Integrated Studies
Abstract
Using medications in the treatment of substance abuse disorders has become as an important part of available treatment options offered by medical practitioners. In this paper data will be presented to show the benefits and barriers associated with using several types of medication-assisted treatment to treat opioid use disorder. There are three drugs approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid dependence: Buprenorphine, Methadone, and Naltrexone. There has been limited adoption of pharmacotherapies in the treatment of substance use disorders. In treatment of addiction, medications are used to reduce the intensity associated with withdrawal symptoms, reduction of cravings …
Secondary Victimization Of Young Adult Female Sexual Assault Victims, Kristin M. Hunter
Secondary Victimization Of Young Adult Female Sexual Assault Victims, Kristin M. Hunter
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The response of community members and public institutions to the crimes of rape and sexual assault have been, historically, disappointing. Victims have felt forced into silence, ashamed to speak out about their experiences. More recently, with the rise of social media use and the #me-too movement, attention and interest has been garnered for this unique class of crimes and victims. It has been discovered that victims of sexual assault who report their assault to community members, police investigators, and health care workers are at risk of secondary victimization. This is a series of attitudes, behaviors, and practices that retraumatizes, shames, …

A Decade Of Desistance: An Exploratory Study In Desistance Theory, Brendan Marsh
A Decade Of Desistance: An Exploratory Study In Desistance Theory, Brendan Marsh
Dissertations
The purpose of this research paper is to explore the lived experience of five ex-offenders who have not offended for a minimum period of ten years. How, and why, these individuals have maintained their crime free status shall be explored in detail in an attempt to understand the causal process that permits successful long term desistance from crime. Furthermore the desisting ex-offenders in this study are also ex-drug addicts. Exactly how criminal offending and drug addiction interacted in the past lives of the people is documented, as is the impossibility of abstaining from one of these behaviours only. This necessitates …

Judging During Crises: Can Judges Protect The Facts?, Lissa Griffin
Judging During Crises: Can Judges Protect The Facts?, Lissa Griffin
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
With the advent of instantaneous information and the trend toward shrinking adherence to the truth, the conversation surrounding the ability of judges to conduct outside research into the matters before them is gaining urgency. In a “post-truth” world, the role that the judiciary plays in our democracy must shift from trier of fact to guardian of factual integrity. And to do this, the professional ethics rules assigned to the judiciary may need re-evaluation. This Essay argues that the judiciary’s ambivalence to its role as fact finder must be overcome, and where appropriate, judges may be empowered to seek out supplemental …
The ‘Evidentiary Bind’ In Postwar Land Restitution: The Case Of Sri Lanka, Jon D. Unruh
The ‘Evidentiary Bind’ In Postwar Land Restitution: The Case Of Sri Lanka, Jon D. Unruh
International Journal of Peace Studies
The enormity of the world’s dislocated population generated by contemporary conflicts has brought significant attention to a complicated process of returning housing, land and property (HLP) to their rightful occupants once conditions permit. As the complexity of large-scale HLP restitution becomes increasingly apparent, significant obstacles emerge that require examination. This article describes how the ‘evidentiary bind’ is such an obstacle. This bind emerges when large-scale HLP restitution processes require titles and deeds to be in the possession of the population who are the least likely to have them—the forcibly displaced. The technical, legal and political inability to acknowledge and accept …

Implementing Educational Courses On Social Media Within Prisons To Decrease Unemployment Rates Among Ex-Prisoners And Reduce Recidivism In The United States, Shannon Hernandez
Implementing Educational Courses On Social Media Within Prisons To Decrease Unemployment Rates Among Ex-Prisoners And Reduce Recidivism In The United States, Shannon Hernandez
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This paper focuses on whether or not it would be beneficial to implement educational courses on social media within prisons in order to prepare prisoners for release, improve post-release unemployment rates, and improve recidivism rates in the United States. Since the early 1990s, technology has grown to a point where it has become a part of everyone’s daily life, which includes social media platforms (Greenstein, 2012). While society has adapted to these advancements, prisoners who have been removed from society for many years are unable to achieve the same levels of social media comprehension, which can cause disparity between their …
Creating The Best: A Two-Prong Policy Approach To Improve The Quality Of Future Certified Ohio Peace Officers, Amy English
Creating The Best: A Two-Prong Policy Approach To Improve The Quality Of Future Certified Ohio Peace Officers, Amy English
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This qualitative client applied study explained and explored a two-fold approach that could be used to implement policy changes that will aid small Ohio police departments in commissioning intellectually developed and psychologically suited individuals for employment in law enforcement. Several issues needed to be addressed in order to accomplish these policy changes. Criminological theories were correlated to deviant behaviors of criminally charged Ohio police officers. Past legislated police reform acts were addressed. Past studies of police officer higher education were analyzed. Finally, the implementation factors for psychological evaluations as a police academy pre-enrollment requirement were identified. This study, based on …
Exploring The Effect Of Gender Roles On Female Drug Users In Appalachia, Lauren Fowler
Exploring The Effect Of Gender Roles On Female Drug Users In Appalachia, Lauren Fowler
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Drug abuse is an ever-growing problem in the United States and in other parts of the world. The Appalachian region is one of the areas hit hardest by this epidemic. Since 2000, the number of overdose deaths in Appalachia has steadily risen while state and city governments analyze the potential causes for such a widespread issue. Many economic and medical explanations have been suggested, but it is also imperative to examine the cultural belief systems that might play a role in the persistent drug use. This study looks at the influence traditional Appalachian gender roles have on female drug users. …

Completing A Census Of Individuals Who Lawfully “Owe" Dna In Cuyahoga County, Rachel Lovell, Joanna Klingenstein, Margaret Mcguire, Misty Luminais
Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education Reports and Briefs
This brief explains how the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office and the research team collaborated to identify individuals who owe DNA, swab eligible offenders who owe, and followed up after their DNA is entered into CODIS. This reporting addresses the issues that arise when lawfully owed DNA is not collected from offenders, explains the process by which we conducted a census of individuals who lawfully owe their DNA, articulates the outcomes of conducting the census (e.g., statistics on the number of individuals who owe their DNA in Cuyahoga County), and recommends approaches that other jurisdictions (within and beyond Ohio) could take …
Seeking Insurance Parity During The Opioid Crisis, Valarie K. Blake
Seeking Insurance Parity During The Opioid Crisis, Valarie K. Blake
Scholarly Works
Too many privately insured face substantial barriers and delays to getting timely and affordable substance use disorder (SUD) care when they need it, sometimes with terrible and irreversible consequences. Historically, private insurers have been reluctant to cover such services and have been glad to leave this responsibility to public systems like Medicaid. Laws like the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA) and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) were meant to make private insurance more generous, but these laws are underenforced and too weak to fully address the challenges of the opioid epidemic. When patients and the …

Analyzing Somali Piracy Prosecutions, Molly Parent
Analyzing Somali Piracy Prosecutions, Molly Parent
SURE (Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience)
•From 2001-2010 the number of piracy incidents spiked. Somali piracy differs from other forms of piracy because it has a distinct modus operandi. Whereas most piracy is theft, Somali attacks focus primarily on capturing vessels and holding them for ransom. •The vessel attacks occur primarily in the high seas, outside the territorial jurisdiction of any one nation. Therefore, Somali piracy cases have been heard in various courts around the world. Many cases have been prosecuted in Kenya, Seychelles, the Netherlands, as well as many other countries around the world. •This analysis examines the nature of these prosecutions, and whether there …

Understanding The Autism Spectrum Disorder Population: An Opportunity To Improve Patient Care, Jean A. Timmons
Understanding The Autism Spectrum Disorder Population: An Opportunity To Improve Patient Care, Jean A. Timmons
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
There is a documented need for caring education regarding patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) for nursing students and nursing staff. The autism spectrum population is increasing, one in 59 children in the United States as reported by the CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network (as cited in Baio et al., 2018). Nurses are expected to provide appropriate care, showing respect and understanding at all times to both the client and family. Through lack of knowledge and misunderstanding the ASD population has not been given this care. Based on Watson’s Theory of Caring, an educational ASD caring program …

Judging Judges Fifty Years After—Was Judge Julius Hoffman’S Conduct So Different?, Bennett L. Gershman
Judging Judges Fifty Years After—Was Judge Julius Hoffman’S Conduct So Different?, Bennett L. Gershman
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
In Chicago, Illinois—and in courtrooms across the United States—judicial misconduct has affected trial outcomes as long as there have been trials. While Judge Julius Hoffman’s conduct in the “Chicago Eight” trial is an egregious example of judicial behavior toward criminal defendants, this piece’s examination of at least ten different categories of misconduct in dozens of cases makes the argument that misbehavior by judges is less of an exception to the rule of impartiality than the thinking public might know. In considering these brazen examples, practitioners and academics alike can evaluate how to best confront the extent to which conduct like …
