Raceless Racism: Blackface Minstrelsy In American Puppetry, Amber West
Raceless Racism: Blackface Minstrelsy In American Puppetry, Amber West
Living Objects: African American Puppetry Essays
Blackface minstrelsy has long been recognized as one of the major elements of 19th and early 20th-century popular performance in the U.S., but its central role in U.S. puppetry has not been explored. West debunks the idea that puppets are “raceless”, examining the origins of blackface minstrelsy in American puppetry, including traditional Punch and Judy performances, William John Bullock’s 19th-century puppet minstrel shows, the creation of “realistic” Black puppets by white puppeteers in the early 20th century, and contemporary examples of exaggerated Black puppet characters, for example in a music video directed by Black artist Boots Riley. West points out …

Rollins After Dark: The Hamilton Holt School's Nontraditional Journeys, Randy Noles
Books about Rollins College and Winter Park
Rollins After Dark is a fascinating history of the eclectic program (and larger-than-life characters) that provided the underpinning of what would become today's Hamilton Holt School - the Rollins College evening program. Although 2019 is the Holt School's 60th anniversary, so-called "adult education" has been offered by the College for more than 80 years. In Rollins After Dark, Randy Noles presents an engaging and entertaining account of the development of the Hamilton Holt School at Rollins College. From a series of popular public spectacles focusing on diverse topics, to a serious academic program for degree-seeking, nontraditional students, the evolution …

Examining Effects Of Parental Sexual Abuse On Female Juvenile Delinquency Using A Social Developmental Perspective, Michelle Nagle
Examining Effects Of Parental Sexual Abuse On Female Juvenile Delinquency Using A Social Developmental Perspective, Michelle Nagle
Theses and Dissertations
Delinquency has traditionally been viewed as a male phenomenon, often defined in androcentric terms, and neglecting females in studies regarding delinquent behavior. However, females are the fastest growing subpopulation of the correction population, which amplifies the importance of understanding the nature and etiology of their offending. Recent research has suggested that predictors of male juvenile delinquency do not adequately explain delinquency in females, because the androcentric research ignores the damaging impact of sexual childhood abuse and other prominent family factors on female juvenile delinquents. This study aimed to examine the impact of childhood parental sexual abuse on female juvenile delinquency …
Demographic, Legal, And Clinical Predictors Of Long-Term Trial Competency Restoration, Jonathan F. Shook
Demographic, Legal, And Clinical Predictors Of Long-Term Trial Competency Restoration, Jonathan F. Shook
Theses and Dissertations
Trial competency is the foremost context in which forensic evaluators interact with criminal courts in the United States, and court-ordered restoration to competency (RTC) substantially contributes to hospitalization via the criminal justice system. Predictors of restoration to competency (RTC) have been extensively studied to date, yet few studies have been conducted with RTC patients in a long-term setting. The present study aimed to examine predictors of successful restoration for defendants who underwent RTC from a long-term inpatient facility in Texas from 2012 to 2017. Patients (N = 261) were compared across retrospective demographic, clinical, and criminogenic factors via binary logistic …

Perceptions Of Female Defendants As A Function Of Pregnancy Status, Rachel A. Silverthorn
Perceptions Of Female Defendants As A Function Of Pregnancy Status, Rachel A. Silverthorn
2019 Symposium
Given the impact pregnancy has in other areas of life it makes sense that when a woman is brought into the criminal justice system pregnancy will play a role in how others perceive her. While research exists on the implications of pregnancy on incarceration, there is a gap regarding the trial phase and the effects of pregnancy on the adjudication process.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether pregnancy status impacts jury perception of female defendants. It was hypothesized that a pregnant defendant would evoke sympathy in a trial situation and consequently a pregnant woman would be judged …
African American Issues In The Workplace, Jenna Gonyea, Andrea Escarega, Katherine Garcia
African American Issues In The Workplace, Jenna Gonyea, Andrea Escarega, Katherine Garcia
School of Human Sciences Research Showcase
The issue of discrimination against African Americans within the labor market has presented itself throughout the United States (Cherlin, 2010). Such discrimination, we have found, is largely due to the barriers to equal opportunity that the average African American faces today (“Why Equal Opportunity is Important”, n.d.). Thus, we have identified and provided solutions for such barriers (“Laying the Foundation for National Prosperity”, n.d.). In doing so, we intend for the solutions to be implemented in an effort to reduce discrimination against African American workers throughout the United States of America.

Hospitality Fighting Against Sex Trafficking, Ashley Camarillo
School of Human Sciences Research Showcase
Sex trafficking is defined as “a commercial sex act that is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age or the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery” (USC, Title 22, Chapter 78, 7102, Sec. 9A and B). Whether we realize or not, sex trafficking is looming specifically in hotel and lodging facilities. The ease of traffickers to use …

Ending Family Homelessness In Ada County, Idaho 2019, Lantz Mcginnis-Brown, Mcallister Hall, Ana Costa, Vanessa Fry, Benjamin Larsen
Idaho Policy Institute Reports
- What interventions are most suitable for preventing family homelessness?
- What is the gap between current capacities of housing and homelessness services and the service capacity needed to end family homelessness in Ada County?
- What are the programmatic costs of ending family homelessness in Ada County?
To answer these questions, Boise State University’s Idaho Policy Institute (IPI) conducted a literature review of homelessness prevention services as well as an analysis of Ada County’s Coordinated Entry System (CES). Research included tracking households with children through the CES, assessing their referral into programs and determining costs associated with placement into housing.

Teaching Justice-Connectivity, Michael Pinard
Teaching Justice-Connectivity, Michael Pinard
Faculty Scholarship
This Essay conveys the importance of building in law students the foundation to recognize the various systems, institutions, and conditions that often crash into the lives of their clients, as well as the residents of the communities that are just outside law schools’ doors. It does so through proposing a teaching model that I call Justice-Connectivity. This model aims for students to understand and be humbled by the ways in which different institutions, systems, and strands of law converge upon, oppress, isolate, and shun individuals, families, and communities. The ultimate teaching lesson is that individuals, families, and communities are often …

Factors That Influence The Implementation Of Restorative Practices In An Urban District: The Role Of Forgiveness And Endorsement, Wanda L. Lash
Factors That Influence The Implementation Of Restorative Practices In An Urban District: The Role Of Forgiveness And Endorsement, Wanda L. Lash
ETD Archive
In spite of extant research on the impact of zero-tolerance policies on racial disparity and negative academic outcomes, exclusionary discipline still abounds, which urges the need for alternatives to this policy. Current research suggests approaches like restorative justice and restorative practices as a promising alternative to zero-tolerance policies where, through its use, students can find acceptance for who they are and learn how to handle conflict, accept responsibility, repair relationships, exercise forgiveness, and belong to a community. The specific problem becomes identifying the factors that make implementation of restorative justice programs in the educational setting impactful. The purpose of this …
