Out Of Sight And Out Of My Mind: How Rural Tennessee Treats The Mentally Ill, Evan Wright
Out Of Sight And Out Of My Mind: How Rural Tennessee Treats The Mentally Ill, Evan Wright
Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive
The following article will give you an inside look at how rural Tennessee approaches the mentally ill flowing through the criminal justice system. Being admittedly more editorial than academic, this article will, however, look at some nationwide and statewide statistics to frame the problem. Next, this article will paint a picture of a perfect storm, which has decimated families, communities, and entire counties. This article will also describe the incarceration sales pitch given to rural counties from the prospective of an uninformed county commissioner at twenty-four years of age. Lastly, this article will conclude with some parting thoughts and suggestions …

When Data Do Not Matter: Exploring Public Perceptions Of Terrorism, Erin M. Kearns, Allison E. Betus, Anthony F. Lemieux
When Data Do Not Matter: Exploring Public Perceptions Of Terrorism, Erin M. Kearns, Allison E. Betus, Anthony F. Lemieux
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Public perceptions of terrorism are out of line with reality. How can perceptions be changed? Using a 4 × 2 experimental design with a national sample of U.S. adults, we examine how source of information and details provided impact views of terrorism. Sources, details, and individual-level factors—Islamophobia, trust in media, and trust in science—impact perceived accuracy of terrorism data. Many people updated their views on terrorism after reading factual information, yet only trust in science was related with this change. In short, people can be persuaded by factual information on terrorism, but it is less clear why they change beliefs.
‘If He Hits Me, Is That Love? I Don’T Think So’: An Ethnographic Investigation Of The Multi-Level Influences Shaping Indigenous Women’S Decision-Making Around Intimate Partner Violence In The Rural Peruvian Andes, Isabella Li Chan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines how the intersections of gender, ethnicity, place, and class shape indigenous women’s risks for and experiences of intimate partner violence and related decision-making in Carhuaz province, an underserved, resource-poor setting in the Peruvian Andes. This dissertation applied a mixed-methods, community-based approach to 11 months of ethnographic fieldwork in Peru, which included 82 face-to-face surveys using the World Health Organization’s Multi-Country Study Instrument, 38 semi-structured interviews with survivors, community members, and IPV-related service providers, and 6 participatory action research workshops (n=64).
Through this dissertation, the voices of indigenous women struggling with intimate partner violence illuminate the lived realities …

Symbolically Annihilating Female Police Officer Capabilities: Cultivating Gendered Police Use Of Force Expectations, Howard Henderson
Symbolically Annihilating Female Police Officer Capabilities: Cultivating Gendered Police Use Of Force Expectations, Howard Henderson
Center for Justice Research Reports
This first step cultivation analysis examines the quantity, temporal dynamics, and stance of muni-cipal police officer use of force depictions based on the gender of the officer. The 112 theatri-cally released films that comprise the core cop film genre were systematically identified. Subsequently, a population of 468 police use of force scenes was identified to serve as the units of analysis for this study. Findings revealed male officer use of force scenes appeared across all 40 years of films. Female officer use of force scenes, however, were highly restricted to specific films, years, and often dwarfed by male scenes within …

Reviving Escobedo, Janet Moore
Faculty Articles and Other Publications
This Symposium Essay reflects on the fifty years that have passed since the Chicago Eight trial by highlighting a new development in criminal procedure that has drawn little scholarly attention: Judges are reviving the right of stationhouse access to defense counsel along lines previously envisaged in Escobedo v. Illinois. The Essay also offers fresh historical and theoretical perspective on the need for stationhouse counsel. First, the Essay draws on a series of events occurring during and after the Chicago Eight trial to illustrate the interrelationship of violence and silence in criminal legal systems, the distinctive coerciveness of custodial interrogation for …

Bosnia-Herzegovina, Dejan Guzina
Political Science Faculty Publications
Bosnia-Herzegovina is an ideal case study for understanding the complexities of post-Cold War conflict resolution. The chapter provides an overview and an evaluation of the lessons that can be drawn from the Bosnian peace process. More specifically, it addresses the following questions: how can the Dayton peace process be evaluated from the perspective of the past twenty-some years? Can Bosnia-Herzegovina be genuinely upheld as the "gold standard” of peacebuilding? And, does Bosnia-Herzegovina lend itself to easy comparisons?
Occupational Therapy In Community Corrections And Reentry: Program Implementation For Adult Males With Addiction, Cassandra E. Sankey
Occupational Therapy In Community Corrections And Reentry: Program Implementation For Adult Males With Addiction, Cassandra E. Sankey
OT Student Capstones
The evolution of incarceration, or confinement, began in the 18th century with the Quakers, known as the Pennsylvania system, an isolation and penitence ideology (Penner, 1978). Later, the Auburn system was implemented in the 19th century, which embraced an approach of mental isolation (Penner, 1978). Today, citizens entrust the criminal justice system with the power to protect communities from individuals who commit crimes (Muñoz, Moreton, & Sitterly, 2016). Therefore, the United States criminal justice system diversified the supervision of lawbreakers based upon the severity of their crimes, such as jail, prison, probation, and parole. This has led to decades of …

Project-Based Learning For Span 316e: Criminal Justice Spanish, Carmen Jany
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Project-based Learning for Span 316E
For this course, I developed project-based learning starting with an open-ended question: Are Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge important for First Responders, Law Enforcement, and Prison Personnel to interact successfully with the Latino Population in Southern California? The discussion then led to the identification of important areas of knowledge (linguistic and cultural) for practitioners in Criminal Justice who engage with the Latino Population. Discussions relied on students’ everyday experiences and personal experiences. Moreover, examples from TV and Cinema were used. Students were then asked to identify a topic of interest and were, based on …

Classroom Teachers' Views Of Student Discipline And Justice: An Expert Judgment Study Using Q Technique, Brendon Charles Mitchell
Classroom Teachers' Views Of Student Discipline And Justice: An Expert Judgment Study Using Q Technique, Brendon Charles Mitchell
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
The perceptions that individual teachers have on issues of student discipline and justice are critical factors in the relationships that exist within the classroom. However, policy decisions on student discipline are often left to administrators and school boards without the consideration of teachers’ insights on issues of behavior management. As a result, a disconnection exists between policy and practice, which affects the learning and culture of classrooms for both teachers and students. This study gives a voice to teachers as the frontline experts on student discipline and justice. Q Methodology, a research technique designed for the systematic study of subjectivity, …
Drug Rehabilitation: Is It Effective In Decreasing The Drug Epidemic On Long Island, New York, Alexandra Sade De Costa
Drug Rehabilitation: Is It Effective In Decreasing The Drug Epidemic On Long Island, New York, Alexandra Sade De Costa
Selected Full-Text Master Theses Collection 2018-
This research will explain what rehabilitation is and the depths of it as well as analyze the question of whether or not rehabilitation is effective in decreasing the drug epidemic on Long Island. Some indicators of effectiveness are when drug-related deaths decrease, when fewer offenders are in jail for drug charges/recidivism rates decrease, when drugs sales have been lowered, and when more addicts remain sober (relapse rates decrease) and return to productive functioning lives. Treatment is effective when it is available, attends to multiple needs of an individual (not just their drug abuse), and offers each individual the proper treatment. …

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
This thesis provides extensive knowledge of the infamous Scott Peterson murder case, which made national headlines in 2002 and 2003. The thesis focuses mainly on Scott Peterson, who was convicted in 2004 of murdering his pregnant wife Laci. A synopsis of the case is provided at the beginning of this work, and also begins by discussing the early lives of Laci and Scott, and their marriage before her disappearance on Christmas Eve 2002. This thesis details the progression of the case extensively, and discusses how Scott Peterson became incriminated in Laci’s disappearance, especially after the revelation of an extramarital affair …

The Self-(Un)Identification Of Disability In Higher Education, Katherine C. Aquino, Joshua D. Bittinger
The Self-(Un)Identification Of Disability In Higher Education, Katherine C. Aquino, Joshua D. Bittinger
Administration and Instructional Leadership Faculty Publications
Use of the self-identification process and accommodation services can, in theory, positively contribute to student success; however, students with disabilities may be negatively impacted if they perceive others viewing them as less significant members of the college community. This study identifies the number of students with self-identified disabilities within higher education and the change in self-identification cases over the course of postsecondary enrollment. Utilizing data from the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study, findings indicate that, 59% of students who self-identified during the first year of postsecondary education, unidentified by the first follow-up and, of those who identified as having a …
