Experiences Of Homeless Vietnam Veterans In Deciding To Access Or Not Access Health Care, Susan K. Lee

Dissertations

Homeless Vietnam Veterans (HVV) report their health status as poor, indicating a multitude of health concerns, including physical and psychological problems, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and alcohol or drug dependencies. Prompt attention to health care may improve the prognosis; however, HVV tend to delay seeking medical attention. The purpose of this study was to explore the process utilized by HVV to make the decision to access or to not access health care services. According to inclusion criteria of the study, all participants served in the US military during the Vietnam War.

Examination Of Student-Athletes' Developmental Transition From Youth Sport To College Sport, Coleman Childers May 2019

Examination Of Student-Athletes' Developmental Transition From Youth Sport To College Sport, Coleman Childers

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of research in developmental sport psychology has targeted the youth and adolescent age groups (aged five to 18) and has tended to avoid athletes in organized and highly competitive environment such as major college athletics. The transition from high school to college brings many challenges. Academically and socially, students encounter increased course rigor, decreased in-class time, and adjustment to new social groups. Additionally, student-athletes encounter scrutiny from the public, extensive time commitments, changing social dynamics, and physical and mental demands as they combine athletic and academic pursuits. This on-going study explores student-athletes’ perspectives of the developmental transition from …

The Role And Impact Of Social Media In Protesting Oppression In Venezuela, Miriam Arias May 2019

The Role And Impact Of Social Media In Protesting Oppression In Venezuela, Miriam Arias

Open Access Theses

Venezuelans are living in the middle of a sociopolitical crisis that likely began in 1999 when Hugo Chavez began his first term as president of the country; however, Venezuela has experienced a significant downturn over the past few years, under leader Nicolas Maduro. Censorship and oppression have magnified, as have economic struggles, both of which have led to a massive exodus, in which more than 300 million people have left the country. The opposition, journalists and human rights activists have been contesting the Maduro regime and one of their tools to do so has been turning to social media platforms. …

The Economic Effects Of Daca And State Policy On Undocumented Students And Society, Vanesa Del Socorro Lougheed May 2019

The Economic Effects Of Daca And State Policy On Undocumented Students And Society, Vanesa Del Socorro Lougheed

Open Access Dissertations

In 2012, President Obama signed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) into effect, a policy that provided limited protections to approximately 800,000 immigrants brought to live in the United States by their parents at a tender age, but that did not address equitable access to higher education. States have since decided whether DACA recipients could attend public colleges and universities at a reduced, instate tuition cost. Such a practice was controversial as many argued that the cost was not worth the investment. In 2017, President Trump initiated a repeal of DACA, which was put on hold by court …

Economic Development And Peace: To Be Pursued In Tandem, Allison Fisher May 2019

Economic Development And Peace: To Be Pursued In Tandem, Allison Fisher

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Peace and economic development are often regarded as separate fields with little overlap. The association with the field of economics makes the latter seem more measurable, more tangible, and therefore more academic. However, a shift is taking place as peace practitioners and researchers discover ways to compare the level of peace within and between countries. Current research in peace studies shows a salient link between the level of economic development and the level of peace within societies. Researchers that work in these two fields must pursue them simultaneously and jointly. The purpose of this paper is to highlight evidence of …

God, I Hope This Part Of My Life Is Over: A Focused Ethnography Of A Correctional Youth Facility’S Therapeutic Climate, Eric Meyer

Theses & Dissertations

Although all prisons have the same goal of isolating offenders from society, the precise strategies used vary from one jurisdiction to the next. Some prisons use means of punishment to gain inmate compliance. Other prisons concentrate their limited resources on rehabilitation. Contained within the following pages are details of a focused ethnography that was completed in a state correctional youth facility that housed males between the ages of 15 and 21 years, all of whom were convicted of violent crimes. This study had the objective of exploring the climate of therapy in this correctional youth facility where rehabilitative programs were …

Opioid Withdrawal Post Incarceration, Samantha Spampinato May 2019

Opioid Withdrawal Post Incarceration, Samantha Spampinato

CURCE Annual Undergraduate Conference

This literature review attempts to provide a more complete understanding of the increasing opioid concern and its detrimental effects from withdrawal in incarcerated individuals. Opioid-related fatal overdoses will significantly decrease with the implementation of opioid treatment in jails and prisons nationwide. The incarcerated populations that are typically affected by Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) include about 8.5% of Hispanics and Whites, and about 7.4% of Blacks. One solution involves Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with the use of opioid agonists, such as methadone and buprenorphine-naloxone. These medications offer a slow release of dopamine and can reduce the patient’s opioid withdrawal effects. However, fewer …

The Anti-Panopticon: Rethinking The Architecture Of Surveillance, Darral Tate May 2019

The Anti-Panopticon: Rethinking The Architecture Of Surveillance, Darral Tate

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The origins of American prison design can be traced back to Jeremy Bentham’s theory of the Panopticon developed in the late 18th century. Bentham saw prison reform as a model for how society should function. He believed surveillance was the best way to deter inmates from committing further crimes. Bentham argued for an architecture of surveillance by making every cell visible from one center point with no interaction. Every prison in the U.S since, has adopted this model designed to produce a system of containment and punishment, while removing inmate interaction. With today’s technology, we are no longer shackled to …

A Theoretical Framework For The Protection Of Environmental Refugees In International Law, Mathias Sahinkuye May 2019

A Theoretical Framework For The Protection Of Environmental Refugees In International Law, Mathias Sahinkuye

The Transnational Human Rights Review

This article analyzes the reality and the criteria for the legal protection of environmental refugees. Using an interdisciplinary approach, it addresses questions about the existence, nature, universality, justification, and legal status of environmental refugees. Despite the lively debates within the community of experts and scientists specializing in migration and/or environmental issues, there is no consensus today on a definition of the term “environmental refugees” since 1985 when it officially appeared. Several descriptions such as ecological refugees, environmental refugees, climate refugees, eco-refugees, climate évacué, environmental migrants, displaced persons due to a natural disaster, environmentally displaced persons, etc. have been used without …

Juveniles And The Criminal Justice System, Tayler Ruggero May 2019

Juveniles And The Criminal Justice System, Tayler Ruggero

Theses

Although juvenile crime rates have been decreasing rapidly in the last three decades, 2,805 children are still arrested each day in the United States (The State of America’s Children®, 2017). A child should get to grow up feeling safe and secure, with room to grow and develop with the support of their families, schools, and communities. Of those being arrested, they are mostly children of color and those that come from lower income communities. After these youths are incarcerated, they are at risk of physical and psychological abuse, sexual assault, and suicide. They also lack proper educational instruction while in …

Shootings And Their Effect On Stock Price And Volume In The Firearm Manufacturing Industry, Conor O'Donnell May 2019

Shootings And Their Effect On Stock Price And Volume In The Firearm Manufacturing Industry, Conor O'Donnell

Honors Scholar Theses

This article investigates how mass shootings are influencing the price and trading volume of firearm manufacturers differently than the previously documented “fear-based” gun sales price spikes. (Wallace, 2015). It is expected that, following a mass shooting, firearms sales increase due to a fear of legislation banning products and a limited timeframe to obtain them. For instance, The Financial Times of London reported 52% increase of gun sales in the year following the Sandy Hook shooting; however, in the long term, if there is regulation that limits the autonomy of manufacturers then investors would be inclined to divest in firearms manufacturers. …

Postsecondary Attainment: Identifying Areas To Improve Retention For North Carolina Community Colleges, Noelle Brown, John Heinen, Matthew Rega, Lizzy Sterling, Jacob Drew

SMU Data Science Review

This paper details ways that North Carolina Community Colleges can improve retention by investigating curriculum completion and success in students’ first year of college. A complete repository of data from community colleges in North Carolina was built for this analysis featuring 1950 variables related to the colleges and their surrounding communities from five main publicly available data sources. Leading factors were identified to help explain why one-third of students in North Carolina community colleges do not return for their second year of college. Our research revealed that racial demographics along with success from educationally at risk, English as a Second …

Examining Self-Esteem Deprivation Hypothesis: Unraveling Root Causes Of Juvenile Delinquency, Yasukiyo Sugimoto May 2019

Examining Self-Esteem Deprivation Hypothesis: Unraveling Root Causes Of Juvenile Delinquency, Yasukiyo Sugimoto

Open Access Theses

The author develops and implements a self-esteem deprivation hypothesis theory. By using this theory, he argues that the corroded self-concept of minority youth influenced by racial/ethnic discrimination may lead them to delinquent behaviors. The author analyzes African-American and Hispanic male youth with mixed methods. By estimating a single equation model and two simultaneous equation models with data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (N=1,355), the author finds that experiencing discrimination predicts marijuana use, but self-esteem does not mediate discrimination and marijuana use. To help explain these results, narratives of five young men …

“Navigating The Impact Of Trauma In The Classroom: An Analysis Of The Trauma-Informed Care In Three Alternative Public Schools”, Hanna Mcwilliams

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Trauma-informed care is a growing strengths-based model in the world of social and human services that focuses on understanding past trauma to create sustainability and build a strong relationship between the client and service provider. Though it is used in various types of agencies, this thesis focuses on the implementation of the trauma-informed care model within three alternative public schools in three cities. The trauma-informed care model is used specifically in public school systems’ alternative schools to influence success for children who have experienced behavioral issues within traditional school settings in light of the consideration that these issues may have …

Do You Remember? Mock Jurors’ Perceptions Of Elder Maltreatment When The Elder Has Alzheimer’S Disease, Samantha Kameese May 2019

Do You Remember? Mock Jurors’ Perceptions Of Elder Maltreatment When The Elder Has Alzheimer’S Disease, Samantha Kameese

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Elder maltreatment is a significant problem in the United States affecting about 10% of older Americans. According to the Stereotype Content Model, elders are seen as warm but lacking competence. This also influences the stereotype that all elders have some sort of cognitive deficit causing the assumptions that an elder may lack certain cognitive abilities and may not be credible enough to provide an accurate abuse claim. The purpose of this study was to examine jurors’ perceptions of elder maltreatment when the elder has a cognitive impairment, specifically Alzheimer’s disease. The approach that was used in this study was an …

The Intersection Of Cyberstalking, Gender, And Capable Guardianship, Justin Randall Gibson May 2019

The Intersection Of Cyberstalking, Gender, And Capable Guardianship, Justin Randall Gibson

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the potential relationships between gender and cyberstalking victimization and attitudes toward capable guardianship and reporting behaviors through the lens of Routine Activities Theory. The data utilized is Wave 24 of the American Trends Panel (ATP), a nationally representative longitudinal panel survey conducted in 2017. Two samples were constructed from the initial sample, the first regarding the association between gender and other social characteristics and cyberstalking victimization and the second relating to the relationship between attitudes toward capable guardians and victimization reporting. Results indicated that gender is not significant with regard to victimization likelihood, but that age, race, …
