Evaluating Website Resources Shared Online Amongst Women With Intimate Partner Violence Experiences: Analysis Of An Online Health Community, Vivian Hui, Lidan Tian, Malavika Eby, Bohan Zhang, Rose E. Constantino
SKMC Student Presentations and Publications
INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) affects around one in four women globally, posing substantial health risks. IPV survivors often consult online health communities for anonymous assistance rather than formal services. Though online health community members frequently share websites to answer questions, no studies have investigated the characteristics and relevance of websites shared in IPV online health communities. This study aims to identify the categories of websites shared in IPV online health communities and evaluate associations between post characteristics and website relevance to survivors' help-seeking needs.
METHODS: Data were extracted from posts and comments on the r/domesticviolence, a subreddit (topic-specific community) …
Stories Take A Life Of Their Own: Exploring The Metoo Movement In Egypt, Menatallah Salama
Stories Take A Life Of Their Own: Exploring The Metoo Movement In Egypt, Menatallah Salama
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the unfolding of Egypt’s MeToo movement through the stories that emerged in the wake of the 2020 Ahmed Bassam Zaki case. Rather than framing this moment as a rupture or a crisis, it seeks to situate it within a longer genealogy of feminist resistance, digital activism, and everyday acts of speaking out and silencing. At the heart of this work is the question: what does it mean for a story to take a life of its own? Stories here are not fixed entities but rather living actants—capable of forming solidarities, generating intensities, and unsettling hegemonic narratives. Drawing …

The Problem Of Insight: An Interpretive Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Awareness Following Acquired Brain Injury, David Bennett, Alyson Norman, Mark Holloway
The Problem Of Insight: An Interpretive Phenomenological Approach To Understanding Awareness Following Acquired Brain Injury, David Bennett, Alyson Norman, Mark Holloway
School of Psychology
Context: Acquired brain injury (ABI) can result in executive impairments that can detrimentally impact an individual’s level of insight into the changes in functioning caused by their ABI. This, along with the difficulty professionals have in identifying executive impairments and relating these to functional changes, can lead to wrongful assumptions of functional abilities among those affected. Objective: This study aimed to explore the experience of individuals with ABI who demonstrate an impairment of insight with a view to documenting specific examples of impaired insight. Method: Four participants took part in a semi-structured interview analysed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Feedback …
The Missed Education Of Mtss: A Phenomenological Study Of Cross-Cultural Counseling With African American Students, Whitney L. Towns
The Missed Education Of Mtss: A Phenomenological Study Of Cross-Cultural Counseling With African American Students, Whitney L. Towns
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how secondary school counselors experience and implement cross-cultural counseling practices with African American students during the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process. African American students disproportionately face systemic barriers that influence their academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes, and counselors are often underprepared to provide culturally responsive and trauma-informed care within the constraints of MTSS. Guided by Ecological Systems Theory, Intersectionality Theory, and the Trauma-Informed Practice Framework, this transcendental phenomenological study examined how counselors understood and carried out their roles across MTSS tiers while navigating issues of trust, culture, trauma, and equity. …

The Implementation Of The Collaborative And Proactive Solutions Model To Influence A Decrease In Students’ Maladaptive Behaviors In K-12 School Settings In The United States: A Phenomenological Qualitative Study, Amy Rachel Wilhite-Stauffer
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of implementing the CPS model to reduce students’ maladaptive behaviors for teachers and providers in K-12 school settings in the United States. Bandura’s social learning theory (SLT) was the theoretical framework on which this study has been based. The central research question was: What are teachers' and providers' experiences implementing the CPS model, and what is the perceived influence on decreasing students’ maladaptive behaviors? A transcendental phenomenological study was conducted, comprising a sample size of 10 teachers and providers from the Northeast Region of the United States who have utilized …
Proportionality And Theft, Christopher T. Wonnell
Proportionality And Theft, Christopher T. Wonnell
San Diego Law Review
Criminal law can serve a variety of utilitarian purposes including deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation. Nevertheless, there is broad agreement among criminal justice scholars that the pursuit of these purposes should be constrained by a requirement that punishment not be disproportionately severe relative to the offense charged. The proportionality constraint is likely to be especially important when considering the less heinous predatory crimes such as nonviolent thefts. Recent years have seen experiments by progressive prosecutors who deemphasize theft offenses as well as statutory schemes that treat many thefts as misdemeanors. With some empirical support, critics charge that these experiments have increased …

Human Trafficking: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Indiana Law Enforcement Human Trafficking Training Effectiveness, Keeley Chelise Keasler Adams
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Human trafficking is a rapidly growing, pervasive issue that threatens the fundamental human rights of every man, woman, and child across the globe. Human trafficking is one of the most lucrative illicit organized crime businesses in the world, and as the fueled demand for cheap labor, services, and commercial sex continues to reach stifling rates, law enforcement organizations are desperately seeking to identify ways to effectively combat this critical issue. Today’s advanced technology and transport systems have enabled human traffickers to expand operations to every country, including the United States. Although every state in the United States is affected, reliable …
Analyzing The Effects Of Supervisors’ Conduct On The Persistent Stress Experienced By Nevada Law Enforcement Officers, Kendra D. Still
Analyzing The Effects Of Supervisors’ Conduct On The Persistent Stress Experienced By Nevada Law Enforcement Officers, Kendra D. Still
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study aimed to identify the specific actions of supervisors that contribute to chronic stress among law enforcement officers in Nevada. Chronic stress is a common issue in law enforcement and can have detrimental effects on officers’ mental and physical well-being. Despite the acknowledgement of supervisors' actions as a significant stressor for officers, there is a lack of research specifically addressing the actions that officers perceive as most stress-inducing, particularly in Nevada. This research gap hinders efforts to address and alleviate these stressors, allowing them to persist and impact officers' well-being. To address this gap, a Likert-scale survey was …

Artificial Intelligence In The Prosecution Of International Crimes, Marta Bo
Artificial Intelligence In The Prosecution Of International Crimes, Marta Bo
International Law Studies
International criminal prosecutions face growing evidentiary challenges due to the vast and heterogeneous digital material generated during conflicts, including user-generated videos, social media, and intercepted communications. This article examines the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting investigations and trials before the International Criminal Court (ICC). Rather than replacing judicial decision-making, AI can assist with specific tasks, particularly in establishing contextual elements and linkage evidence central to international crimes. The article explores three main areas: AI-driven biometric tools for facial and speech recognition; AI techniques for detecting patterns of violence and mapping command structures; and applications during trial proceedings, …

Comprehensive Framework For Artificial Intelligence Model Testing: Integrated Validation Methodologies, Global Regulatory Compliance, And Enterprise Implementation Strategies For 25 Years, Ramkumar Bharathan
Defensive Publications Series
The proliferation of artificial intelligence systems across critical infrastructure necessitates a paradigm shift from traditional software quality assurance toward probabilistic validation methodologies. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for AI model testing that synthesizes regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions—including the EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689), NIST AI Risk Management Framework 2.0, Federal Reserve SR 11-7, Colorado AI Act, NYC Local Law 144, and sector-specific regulations—into an integrated validation architecture applicable across financial services, healthcare, insurance, manufacturing, and retail sectors.
The framework encompasses twelve distinct testing dimensions: functional correctness, performance benchmarking, bias and fairness assessment, robustness and adversarial resilience, explainability validation, …

The Moderating Role Of Self-Esteem In The Relationship Between Perceived Gender Bias And Job Satisfaction Among Women In The Technology Industry, Roberta L. Minicola
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women employed in the technology industry continue to experience gender-based bias that may adversely affect job satisfaction. Although the deleterious impact of gender bias on women’s job satisfaction has been well documented, the potential of self-esteem to mitigate this impact has not yet been examined. Informed by social dominance theory, the purpose of this quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study was to examine the moderating effect of self-esteem on the relationship between perceived gender bias (i.e., insufficient support, devaluation, hostility) and job satisfaction among women working in the U.S. technology sector. Data were collected from 138 female technology professionals recruited through Amazon …

Teachers And Administrators' Perceptions Of School Resource Officers, Shameka J. Duncan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
School Resource Officers (SROs) play a significant role in middle and high schools in Metro Atlanta; however little research has included the perceptions of school administrators and teachers about their roles. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of teachers and administrators regarding the roles of SROs and their perspectives on the practices that could enhance collaboration among these stakeholders in ensuring school safety. Informed by Gregory’s theory of perception, the study investigated how educators and administrators described their interactions with SROs. Data was gathered via semi-structured interviews with three teachers and three administrators and …

“I Plead Ignorance”: Autonomous Weapons And Criminal Liability For Not Knowing The Knowable, Jonathan Kwik
“I Plead Ignorance”: Autonomous Weapons And Criminal Liability For Not Knowing The Knowable, Jonathan Kwik
International Law Studies
This article argues that the unpredictability and unintuitive behavior of modern artificial intelligence provide more opportunities for users of autonomous weapon systems (AWS) to remain ignorant of risks posed by their systems to protected entities on the battlefield, and that this ignorance can be maintained even in iterative situations featuring a prior civilian casualty event. It demonstrates this theorem through illustrative targeting scenarios, before formalizing the argument through a model showing the evolution of an AWS-user’s mens rea as they receive notice of a prior incident, and choose to pursue—or not pursue—an inquiry. This analysis reveals a perverse incentive structure, …

Survivors Of Sexual Trauma: Abortion Experiences Of Black Women In The Southern United States, Katie Grace Geter
Survivors Of Sexual Trauma: Abortion Experiences Of Black Women In The Southern United States, Katie Grace Geter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women who experience both sexual trauma and abortion within their lifetime are highly likely to struggle with serious mental health symptoms; however, social work students and practitioners lack education and knowledge on how to serve these women. Recent events, including the uprising of gender and race related movements, COVID-19, heightened political division, and increased governmental control on abortion rights also impact social-work practice. Acknowledging intersectionality, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of abortion for Black women in the Southern United States who have a history of sexual trauma. The experiences of 6 Black women with …
Understanding Reporting Decisions: Qualitative Exploration Of Hate Crime Underreporting Among Minority Transgender Individuals, Shanise Anita Benitez
Understanding Reporting Decisions: Qualitative Exploration Of Hate Crime Underreporting Among Minority Transgender Individuals, Shanise Anita Benitez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Minority transgender individuals experience disproportionately high rates of hate‑motivated violence, yet these incidents remain substantially underreported. This qualitative study examined the social, structural, and identity‑based factors that influence reporting decisions among minority transgender adults in the United States. Guided by Bandura’s social learning theory and Crenshaw’s intersectionality theory, the study examined how participants’ lived experiences, community-based observations, and intersecting marginalized identities influence their perceptions of safety, trust, and institutional legitimacy. Semi‑structured interviews with minority transgender participants were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns related to reporting behaviors, community‑driven coping strategies, and barriers to formal engagement with law enforcement. Findings …

Linking Illinois High School To College Data And Beyond, Benjamin Boer
Linking Illinois High School To College Data And Beyond, Benjamin Boer
Reports, Analyses, and other Publications
This brief examines the challenges and opportunities in linking high school, postsecondary, and workforce data in Illinois. Despite significant investments in education pathways, career programs, and dual credit initiatives, there is no central source of data showing whether Illinois high school graduates are enrolling in college, persisting through their programs, and securing quality employment. The brief explores why data linking is technically and structurally challenging, reviews existing efforts at state and national levels, and provides specific recommendations for improving data infrastructure. Using the STAMP (Scaling Transformative Advanced Manufacturing Pathways) program as a case study, the authors demonstrate how linked data …
Community Reintegration Programs For Successful Reentry For Individuals Deemed Not Guilty By Reason Of Insanity, Joanna Baker
Community Reintegration Programs For Successful Reentry For Individuals Deemed Not Guilty By Reason Of Insanity, Joanna Baker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Very little research has been conducted on the institution of community reintegration programs for individuals deemed not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI). In the United States, each state can determine the path for community reentry with the NGRI population. California has a strategic and supportive reentry program that requires services such as drug testing, individual therapy, and close monitoring. Other states, including North Carolina, do not have a reentry program in place for the NGRI population. No research exists comparing states with conditional release programs and states without these programs. Consistence in community reintegration programs among all states can …
Trauma Coping Mechanisms Among Police In Small Departments, Peter Michael Ungaro
Trauma Coping Mechanisms Among Police In Small Departments, Peter Michael Ungaro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mental health services are available to police officers, but many do not utilize these resources due to stigma, shame, and fear of job loss. This reluctance often forces officers to handle mental health issues alone, frequently leading to unhealthy coping strategies that negatively impact their well-being and job performance. While advancements in mental health support exist, they primarily serve larger departments, leaving the needs of small departments largely unmet. The foundation of the study was rooted in resilience theory, which holds that the impact of trauma on an individual is determined not by the event itself but by the coping …
