Developing Civically Engaged Citizens In An Introductory Criminal Justice Course, Tamara J. Lynn
eJournal of Public Affairs
Criminal justice programs are often considered a training ground for students’ future careers; however, that training often lacks a focus on civic engagement. This article highlights an experiential learning project in an introductory criminal justice course that was designed to develop the skills of civically engaged professionals. The project, combining research with service-learning, was implemented in an undergraduate criminology course to demonstrate the ways in which research and theory are necessary for implementing social and political change. Student participants achieved the desired learning outcomes and gained a deeper understanding of their role as change agents. The success of this project …

Cracked Windows, Broken Mirrors, And Closed Doors: A Critical Content Analysis Of African American Children's Books, Tiffany World
Cracked Windows, Broken Mirrors, And Closed Doors: A Critical Content Analysis Of African American Children's Books, Tiffany World
Doctor of Education in Elementary and Early Childhood Education Dissertations
ABSTRACT
There is a current shortage of culturally responsive African American children’s books. Culturally responsive literature provides a positive influence on children of all races and researchers have indicated that picturebooks that are diverse and culturally responsive can affirm cultural and social identities (Crowley, Fountain, & Torres, 2012). The purpose of this study was to examine how the life experiences of African American families are currently being depicted in recently published children’s literature. This study employed a qualitative research design to explore the topic of African American families in children’s literature. The study examined how African American families are represented …

The Kids Are Not Alright: Leveraging Existing Health Law To Attack The Opioid Crisis Upstream, Yael Cannon
The Kids Are Not Alright: Leveraging Existing Health Law To Attack The Opioid Crisis Upstream, Yael Cannon
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The opioid crisis is now a nationwide epidemic, ravaging both rural and urban communities. The public health and economic consequences are staggering; recent estimates suggest the epidemic has contracted the U.S. labor market by over one million jobs and cost the nation billions of dollars. To tackle the crisis, scholars and health policy initiatives have focused primarily on downstream solutions designed to help those who are already in the throes of addiction. For example, the major initiative announced by the U.S. Surgeon General promotes the dissemination of naloxone, which helps save lives during opioid overdoses.
This Article argues that the …

Retrying Leopold And Loeb: A Neuropsychological Perspective, David L. Shapiro
Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
They called it the crime of the century; in 1924 in Chicago two brilliant, well-educated, and wealthy young men kidnapped and murdered a 14-year-old boy and killed him "for the thrill of it". Expert testimony was presented by several well-known psychiatrists and psychologists, but even with all their clinical insights, none could reach a conclusion about the causal relation between their disturbed childhoods and a violent senseless crime. In fact, the well-known criminal defense attorney Clarence Darrow made little mention of the extensive psychiatric and psychological workups, and the judge did not deal with it in his sentencing. A review …
Examining The Help Seeking Experiences Of Youth In Extended Care: A Narrative Ethnography Study, Sarah M. Pennington
Examining The Help Seeking Experiences Of Youth In Extended Care: A Narrative Ethnography Study, Sarah M. Pennington
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This narrative ethnographic study examined the help-seeking experiences of foster youth as they transitioned into adulthood in extended care. The purpose of the study was to understand whether foster youth in extended care report a period of continued support which assisted in the development of their adult roles, relationships, and the knowledge and skills to become productive and satisfied adults. Survivalist Self-Reliance (Samuels & Pryce, 2008) asserts foster youth viewed their adult identities as grounded in independence and standing on their own, or are foster youth influenced by the relationships and the network of support embedded in the extended-care network …

Disciplinary segregation (DS) is practiced in a variety of correctional settings and a growing body of research explores its subsequent effects among offenders. The present study contributes to this literature by analyzing the impact of short-term DS on violent infractions and community recidivism among a sample of inmates in Washington State. We assessed the impact of DS on these outcomes from deterrence and stain theory perspectives while controlling for social support variables such as visitations and correctional programming. Mentally ill offenders were excluded, as their abilities to make rational choices may be inconsistent with deterrence theory. Results show DS does …

“I Almost Quit”: Exploring The Prevalence Of The Ferguson Effect In Two Small Sized Law Enforcement Agencies In Rural Southcentral Virginia, Joshua L. Adams
The Qualitative Report
Recent negatively publicized police-citizen interactions in the media, followed by a subsequent de-policing of police in the United States, has been named the Ferguson Effect. The Ferguson Effect has been explored by prominent scholars in the criminal justice community; however, little is known about how police officers in small rural police agencies perceive the Ferguson Effect. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions and lived experiences of police officers regarding the Ferguson Effect in small rural police agencies, as well as police officers’ perceptions of their own organizational justice. Organizational justice theory was utilized as …

Considering Consent: A Philosophy Of One Word's Impact, Kiley Addis
Considering Consent: A Philosophy Of One Word's Impact, Kiley Addis
Philosophy Summer Fellows
When considering the topic of consent in reference to sexual relations, one might view the definition as straightforward. In this project, I demonstrate that no clear, singular definition of consent exists, but rather, focus on compiling differing definitions typically used. The main definitions focused on within the research are that of how the United States legal system defines consent, how higher education institutions define consent within their policies, and how our country defines consent culturally. Using the vast differences in the definitions as the prime example, I demonstrate that no clear, singular definition of consent exists; without a concise definition …

Since 2013 I have worked as a volunteer on consecutive externally funded research projects at a resettlement scheme (RS) that works with men released on temporary licence from the local prison and others on community orders referred through probation. To date I have 80+ interview transcripts from 33 men and two women, mostly due to the co-production of blog posts for the Photographic-electronic Narrative (PeN) project. The focus of this article is a case study about Matthew, who engaged in a series of interviews with me for the PeN Project at the end of 2016, when he was referred to …

Pre-Service Teachers' Implicit Bias: Impacts Of Confrontation, Reflection, And Discussion, Katherine E. Batchelor, Kendra Dewater, Kennedy Thompson
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
Abstract: Although there is much research regarding implicit bias in numerous fields, such as criminal justice, psychology, and health, little research has examined pre-service teachers’ attitudes and beliefs regarding implicit biases they carry, especially when it comes to race. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to fill the gap in qualitative research regarding how pre-service teachers address, confront, and talk about biases. We begin by defining implicit bias. Next, we situate our research within sociocultural theory with an emphasis on critical literacy practices. Then, we share our findings, which centered on the course environment, students’ reactions to their results …

Suicide Squad: Boko Haram's Use Of The Female Suicide Bomber, Vesna Markovic
Suicide Squad: Boko Haram's Use Of The Female Suicide Bomber, Vesna Markovic
Justice, Law, and Public Safety Studies Department Faculty Articles
Boko Haram first began using the tactic of suicide bombings in 2011 and in 2014 started using female suicide bombers. This research focuses on gender differences in the use of suicide bombers. The data were collected using open sources from June 16, 2011 to June 15, 2018. Using this longitudinal data, trends are described over that 7-year period, focusing on the use of females. A majority of the suicide bombings target civilians in Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. More than half of the bombers were women and girls, some as young as 7 years old, whereas there were more than …
