Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study examines the relationship between the self-reported mental well-being of a felon concerning their educational choices, employment opportunities, and recidivism. The study is a correlational quantitative study that used a multiple regression to analyze the data. Data were examined from visitors to the North Carolina Employment Security Commission. The data were collected from the convenience sample of 106 unemployed or underemployed felons seeking employment and/or training. The study found that there was no statistical significance between the self-reported mental well-being of a felon and their employment choices or recidivism. A significant regression equation was found with a statistically significant …
Deferred Prosecution Agreements In Singapore: What Is The Appropriate Standard For Judicial Approval, Eunice Chua, Benedict Wei Qi Chan
Deferred Prosecution Agreements In Singapore: What Is The Appropriate Standard For Judicial Approval, Eunice Chua, Benedict Wei Qi Chan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Originating from the US, deferred prosecution agreements (“DPAs”) have made their way to the UK through the Crime and Courts Act 2013 and Singapore through the Criminal Justice Reform Act 2018. The Singapore model for approval of DPAs draws heavily from the UK and both require proof to a court that DPAs are in the “interests of justice” and that their terms are “fair, reasonable and proportionate” before DPAs can be approved. This paper considers the theoretical basis for the court’s approval of DPAs, critically examines the application of the tests for approval of DPAs in the UK and considers …
A Case Study Of Police Use Of Force On Juveniles In A Southeastern Police Department, Kayce Lowe
A Case Study Of Police Use Of Force On Juveniles In A Southeastern Police Department, Kayce Lowe
Master's Theses
Officer characteristics, situational factors, and organizational factors are common predictors in identifying and explaining police use of force (Friedrich, 1980). While these domains are important, the separation of juveniles in use of force studies is an essential component that is lacking in most use of force literature today. Some studies unintentionally imply that adults and juveniles present the same predictors of force by this lack of separation. Age, specifically the status of juveniles and adults, is not a common predictor of police use of force; however, it is one of the most influential factors in shaping a police officer’s decision-making …
Acting Black: An Analysis Of Blackness And Criminality In Film, Blake Edwards
Acting Black: An Analysis Of Blackness And Criminality In Film, Blake Edwards
Master's Theses
This thesis will attempt to answer how films deal with blackness and crime, specifically when intersecting with the concepts of exploitation, appropriation, whiteness and the criminality of the black body. While not entirely the root of the negative perceptions of African-Americans in the United States, the manner in which African-Americans are portrayed in motion picture media influences how their presence is seen in society. This thesis will examine specific films that include elements dealing with the listed factors and what effects they may or may not have.

More Bang For Their Buck: Enhancing The Sustainability Of Surplus Ammunition Destruction Programs, Joe Farha, Matthias Krotz, Einas Osman Abdalla Mohammed
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Dealing with stockpiles of surplus ammunition remains a key challenge for many African countries. In the last 10 years, at least 38 ammunition sites across Africa reportedly experienced unplanned explosions, causing injury and loss of life as well as significant damage to infrastructure and the environment. Numerous reasons such as overstocking, inadequate storage facilities due to insufficient resources, inadequate capabilities of storage sites, or simply unstable ammunition may be the cause of these unplanned detonations. These factors are often exacerbated by personnel having a limited knowledge and awareness, or insufficient training on relevant subjects such as explosive compatibility groups or …
Interrogating The Construction And Representations Of Criminalized Women In The Academic Social Work Literature: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Sandra Marie Leotti
Interrogating The Construction And Representations Of Criminalized Women In The Academic Social Work Literature: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Sandra Marie Leotti
Dissertations and Theses
In the United States today, there are 2.3 million people behind bars in jails and prisons. Mass incarceration has swept up the United States to such a degree that we are known globally for holding more people in correctional facilities than any other country in the world. Although women have always, and still do, reflect a smaller proportion of the correctional population, over the last 40 years, their rates of criminalization and imprisonment have far outpaced that of men's. Drastic increases in the criminalization of women are intimately connected to the entrenchment of social disadvantage enabled under neoliberal globalization. Neoliberal …

Incarcerated Workers And Inmate All-Hazard Firefighters In Emergency Response And Disasters: A Captive Labor Force, Jordan Carlee Smith
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
As disasters continue to increase both in frequency and in capacity for damage, the impacts of such events on incarcerated populations in the U.S. is becoming more apparent. The dependence of various states on the labor of prisoners to respond to major disasters such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, oil spills, and wildfires has become a focal point of discussions centering on mass incarceration, the rights of prisoners, and the future of criminal justice reform. The institutions and structures which make incarcerated workers vulnerable to disasters within the prison setting, also make them vulnerable as workers. They face life altering repercussions …

A Qualitative Examination Of Prostate Cancer Treatment Decision-Making Among Black Men, Linda Ottley
A Qualitative Examination Of Prostate Cancer Treatment Decision-Making Among Black Men, Linda Ottley
Nursing ETDs
This ethnographic study explored the experience of treatment decision-making among urban Black men who were diagnosed with prostate cancer in San Diego, California. Specifically, this research was conducted to further understand the decision-making process among Black men and the barriers they face when making treatment decisions about prostate cancer. The study is important because prostate cancer disproportionately affects Black men in the United States, and yet they are underrepresented in research studies (Randolph, Coakley, & Shears, 2018). These inequities are poorly understood and need considerable analysis and exploration. Still unclear is the possible effect of historical trauma or negative healthcare …

This study explores pornography use across the lifespan for a sample of registrants convicted of child pornography related offenses. We conducted qualitative life history interviews with nine offenders to examine how offender, victim, and situational factors interact to produce pornography related criminal events. Using a hybrid analytic approach, themes related to persistence in pornography use and the social acceptability of pornography are identified. These themes relate to transitions from legal pornography use to illegal child pornography possession.

Care Ethics: Morality With No Responsibility, Haley Mathis
Care Ethics: Morality With No Responsibility, Haley Mathis
Open Access Dissertations
Most of us assume we have free will and that we make free decisions all of the time. Yet, philosophers and scientists have provided significant worries about making this assumption. What I want to know, in this project, is how these debates (and the uncertainty and contentious nature of these debates) bear on normative moral theories about what makes an action right or wrong. I will argue that we should still be able to understand morality, regardless of whether it turns out we have free will or not. The challenges facing the free will debate just shouldn’t be a challenge …
Exploring Restorative Justice, Suspensions, And Expulsions With African American Males, Dorothy L. Mosby
Exploring Restorative Justice, Suspensions, And Expulsions With African American Males, Dorothy L. Mosby
Dissertations
Zero tolerance programs led to unequal consequences for African American males because the programs targeted behaviors African American students were more likely to receive discipline for, which resulted in an increase of disciplinary situations for the students. With the disproportionate suspensions and expulsions of African American male students in public schools, Illinois Senate Bill 100 addressed the discipline issues to reduce the number of long-term suspensions and expulsions. In the 2016–2017 school year, the state of Illinois implemented Senate Bill 100. The bill reconstructed the procedures on how school administrators suspended and expelled students; Restorative Justice was a technique used …

Should Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (Prep) Services Be Blamed For The Increased Rate Of Sexual Transmitted Infections?, Yeow Chye Ng, Jack J. Mayeux
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a lifesaving HIV prevention medication. Critics have shared their concerns for oral PrEP as it may be promoting unprotected sex among PrEP users, and indirectly may cause a new surge of sexual transmitted infections (STIs). This study suggests that information is inconclusive at this time.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of social capital on the phenomenon of community sustainability in Meacham Park Missouri, a Black neighborhood located in south St. Louis county. It is believed that social capital influences the collective action needed to create structures which lead to economic growth essential to community sustainability (Farrell, 2007, Ginwright, 2015; Putnam, 1993). The core idea of Robert Putnam’s social capital theory is there is value in social networks (Putnam, 2000, 1993).
