International Journal on Responsibility
Through various life events and circumstances, some individuals find themselves at a disconnect with their surroundings—unable to relate to peers, socially awkward, and socially isolated and outcast. As a result, socially constructed basic human needs (BHNs) of meaning, recognition, and justice can seem even more difficult if not impossible to satisfy. The resulting relative deprivation becomes more problematic for these individuals as they navigate pursuit of these BHNs absent the value opportunities provided by social bonds, such as shared experience, collaborative problem solving, emotional outlets, networking, and alternate perspectives. Simultaneously, empathy and bonding toward their communities are damaged or erased. …

Dating Apps: Quick Sex On The Maps, Hannah Hays
Dating Apps: Quick Sex On The Maps, Hannah Hays
Scholars Week
Geosocial (i.e., location-based) dating apps are an increasingly popular way in which people meet for sexual purposes. For example, Tinder has at least 10 million active users a day (Sumter, Vandenbosch, & Ligtenberg, 2016). At present, little is known about the use of geosocial/location-based dating applications for sexual hookups and the relationship between this behavior and personality constructs. One possibility is that individuals who are highly impulsive are more likely to use geosocial dating apps, specifically for sexual “hookups” (i.e., the partners are not in a committed relationship with one another, the experience is short term, and not likely to …

Pacific Northwest Chapter of MLA Annual Meeting
To characterize efforts surrounding HOM/HS communities across the U.S., we identified the top thirty medical schools in both primary care and research using U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 Rankings. We searched and browsed the websites provided by the institutions to collect information pertaining to any presence of an on-campus HOM/HS community. Upon identifying an HOM/HS community, we collected information about the group’s mission; the funding of the group; the membership structure; the typical activities and initiatives; the library’s involvement with the group; and any course offerings related to HOM/HS at the institution.
FINDINGS: Several institutions appeared in both rankings, …

Developing faculty interested in aging may help social work meet the needs of our growing aging population. However, doctoral students need a variety of supports to complete PhDs and become gerontological social work faculty. This study explored one program’s role in supporting the development of social work doctoral students to faculty in gerontology. An e-mail invitation was sent to all former participants (2010–2016 cohorts) of the Association for Gerontology Education in Social Work (AGESW) Pre-Dissertation Fellows Program (PDFP). The 38-question online survey consisted of Likert-type scales, multiple answers, and one open-ended question per section about the program’s impacts on …

International Anti-Money Laundering Regulations Through The Prism Of Financial Inclusion And Competition, Oleksandr Khlopenko
International Anti-Money Laundering Regulations Through The Prism Of Financial Inclusion And Competition, Oleksandr Khlopenko
Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies
The last three decades have been marked by a battle with money laundering, tax evasion, and even though not strictly illegal, but no less harmful, tax avoidance after the boom in those legal and accountancy services back in the 1980s. The methods that national, international, and supranational organization have used range from doctrinal soft power to outright bullying, which were supported by their apologists for the sake of the common good. Yet the policies implemented so far have somehow not addressed the lack of theoretical and practical application of ‘inclusion’ and ‘equality’ into their framework. The same three decades have …

In this brief, authors Daniel Bromberg, Étienne Charbonneau, and Andrew Smith present the findings of a 2017 Granite State Poll asking New Hampshire residents how they feel about the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) sharing their driver’s license photos with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Currently 21 states, though not New Hampshire, share DMV data with the FBI in support of its effort to build a massive database of over 400 million photos to which it applies facial recognition technology. The authors report that about 70 percent of Granite Staters support the state DMV sharing photos with the FBI …

Theoretical And Empirical Foundations Of Divorce Education: Connecting Program Theory And Curricular Content, Alisha M. Hardman, Emily H. Becher, Ellie Mccann, Sharon E. Powell, Jennifer Garbow, Neeraj Rajasekar, Mary S. Marczak
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Many parent and family education programs lack a clearly articulated program theory that is solidly founded in the social science literature and used to guide rigorous evaluation. This article describes the program theory for Parents Forever, a divorce education program developed by the Minnesota Extension to serve divorcing parents. The Parents Forever program theory is theoretically based and empirically-informed. The program theory is based on three significant frameworks, which serve as the theoretical foundation for the program: human ecosystems, life course development, and family resilience. These theories are explored and discussed. Three primary change mechanisms relevant for divorcing families serve …

Research has shown the nursery industry needs to seek alternative water sources and adopt water conservation strategies to reduce water use in order to stay viable. This study used a qualitative approach to explore nursery growers’ perceptions, attitudes, and opinions about water usage to inform the development of Extension programs that encourage adoption of water conservation strategies. Interviews were conducted with 24 nursery growers across the U.S. The findings indicated growers interact with water in various ways, including meeting plant water needs, facilitating chemical distribution, controlling product quality, and facilitating business operations. The participants felt protecting water was the right …

Less Safe In The Ivory Tower: Campus Sexual Assault Policy In The Trump Administration, Leah C. Butler, Heejin Lee, Bonnie S. Fisher
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Since the late 20th century, the federal government has regulated colleges’ and universities’ handling of campus sexual and gender-based violence (CSGBV). Although the arc of history has bent toward establishing greater protections for victims of such violence, new proposed regulation by the U.S. Department of Education under the Trump administration focuses more heavily on ensuring due process rights for students accused of CSGBV. Most recently, in November 2018, U.S. Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos submitted a proposed rule change to the regulation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. This article provides the historical context for this …

Purchasing Products To Make A Difference: A Study Of Corporate Social Responsibility, Gender, And Cosmetic Purchasing Behavior By College Students, Allegra Blomenberg
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The purpose of this study was to investigate gender differences that exist in the way corporate social responsibility (CSR) is perceived by college students and how this affects cosmetic purchasing behavior. Two other objectives included finding what drives millennial cosmetic purchasing behavior as a whole and the ways in which millennials are informed of companies’ corporate social responsibilities. Through analyses of interview data from fourteen college-age millennials, the study showed that non-binary participants more positively perceived CSR and actively bought from responsible brands. The male participant perceived CSR positively but had never been sure to purchase products from a brand …

Effecting Epiphanous Change In Teacher Practice: A Teacher’S Autoethnography, Karen D. Barley Ms, Jane Southcott
The Qualitative Report
This study comprises of a series of autoethnographic vignettes stemming from Karen’s life experiences that provide a snapshot of her quest for equality and fairness in her personal life, as well as her professional life as a primary school and special education educator. Karen later became a teacher of teachers, keen to share what she had learned with her peers. It was when she began educating other teachers that she became even more self-reflective with the most poignant question being, what causes one to change their beliefs, attitude, or way of thinking? The included vignettes encapsulate significant stories, starting from …
