Beyond The West: Barriers To Globalizing Art History, Peggy Levitt, Markella B. Rutherford Oct 2019

Beyond The West: Barriers To Globalizing Art History, Peggy Levitt, Markella B. Rutherford

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

This article provides an empirical measure of progress toward global inclusiveness in introductory art history textbooks. Using both qualitative and quantitative content analysis, we find that although the discourse of art history has shifted toward global definitions of art, the incorporation of Non-Western artists into introductory textbooks has occurred slowly, making up only 23% of modern and contemporary artists featured in recent editions. There is greater editorial agreement about the canonical significance of Western modern and contemporary artists than about Non-Western artists. Drawing on qualitative interviews with textbook authors, editors, publishers, and reviewers, we identify the epistemological, economic, and institutional …

Behind Quality, There Is Equality: An Analysis Of Scientific Capital Accumulation In Social-Democratic Welfare Regimes, Olivier Bégin-Caouette

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

ABSTRACT

Trade-offs between quality and equality are at the forefront of multiple debates in higher education, and one conceptual tool to approach societies’ adjustment in resolving these trade-offs is the welfare regime typology. Relying on the theory of academic capitalism and using research production as a proxy for quality in higher education, this study analyses how social-democratic welfare regimes resolve the trade-off between comparatively high levels of academic research production, access to higher education and equal citizens’ living conditions. Interviews with 56 system actors suggest that equality is perceived to contribute to academic freedom, public investments in research and the …

The purpose of the paper is to identify the best or most appropriate model for the behavioral profile according to the profile determined by the inductive analysis of the variables themselves. For this reason, part …

The Role Of Interviewer/Respondent Gender Dyads In Cellphone Interview Retention And Length, Ridvan Peshkopia, Bleona Asllani, Vanesa Llapashtica, Alma Vuniqia

UBT International Conference

T

his article investigates the role of interviewer/respondent gender dyad in cellphone interview retention and length. Relying on a simple random sample of cellphone public opinion survey data of 1571 respondents collected in Albania in winter 2018-2019, we test a set of hypothesis arguing that, in cellphone public opinion surveys, female interviewers would yield better results both in terms of advancing the interview toward the last question (interview retention), and having it conducted in shorter time (interview length). By complementing social distance theory and social desirability theory with genders differences in personality traits, we hope to contribute with models potentially …

Perceptions Of Injustice Among Intercollegiate Athletes: Effects Of Response Type On Individual Well-Being And Perceived Team Cohesion, Linsey Klein, Kristen Black

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

When an individual perceives the relationship between what they put into an exchange relationship to be unequal to the outcomes they receive, they are said to be in a state of inequity, and they are likely to view the relationship as unfair. This perceived lack of fairness, caused by the state of inequity, is often referred to as injustice and can have negative effects on the individual and team. While the concepts of inequity and injustice are usually studied within an organizational context, they can also be applied to an athletic setting, specifically in regard to players participating on intercollegiate …

It was many years after Industrial Revolution that the threat child labor and working under inhumanitarian conditions poses as physical burden to laborers and the severity of the fact that they had to work for many hours under such ardous conditions were realized. However, as industry developed and the concept of being a laborer evolved into a task that requires emotional assets of laborers other than physical burden as well, the “emotional labor” of workers was started to be investigated as a concept. First brought up by American sociologist Arlie Hochschild in 1979 in her book “The Managed Heart” that …

Adaptation To Climate Change In Coastal Communities: Findings From Seven Sites On Four Continents, Matthew Berman, Gary Kofinas

ISER Reports

Climate change is causing wide-ranging effects on ecosystem services critical to coastal communities and livelihoods, creating an urgent need to adapt. Most studies of climate change adaptation consist of narrative descriptions of individual cases or global synthesis, making it difficult to formulate and test locally rooted but generalizable hypotheses about adaptation processes. In contrast, researchers in this study analyzed key points in climate change adaptation derived from coordinated fieldwork in seven coastal communities around the world, including Arctic, temperate, and tropical areas on four continents. Study communities faced multiple challenges from sea level rise and warmer ocean temperatures, including coastal …

Explaining Gender Differences In Changes In Volunteering After Divorce, Young-Il Kim, Sung Joon Jang Oct 2019

Explaining Gender Differences In Changes In Volunteering After Divorce, Young-Il Kim, Sung Joon Jang

Faculty Publications - Department of Sociology

Although there is evidence that divorce and volunteering are related, little is known about the process by which divorce affects volunteering. Using four-wave panel data spanning 16 years, this study examines the causal mechanisms underlying changes in volunteering following divorce. Results from estimating structural equation models indicated that divorce affects volunteering through different mechanisms for women and men. For women, increased financial strain explained a decline in volunteering after divorce. For men, decreased social integration measured by formal group participation accounted for a decline in volunteering after divorce. Domain-specific analyses further showed that decreased religious attendance following divorce explained a …

Do After-School Robotics Programs Expand The Pipeline Into Stem Majors In College?, Cathy Burack, Alan Melchior, Matthew Hoover

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

One result of the growing concerns over the numbers of young people moving into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-related careers has been the expansion of formal and informal STEM education programming for pre-college youth, from elementary school through high school. While the number of programs has grown rapidly, there is little research on their long-term impacts on participant education and career trajectories. This paper presents interim findings from a multi-year longitudinal study of three national after-school robotics programs that engage students in designing, building, and competing complex robots with the goal of inspiring long-term interest in STEM. Focusing on …

Looking Back At The Evolution Of James Cone’S Theological Anthropology: A Brief Commentary, Sekhmet Maat Oct 2019

Looking Back At The Evolution Of James Cone’S Theological Anthropology: A Brief Commentary, Sekhmet Maat

History, Political Science, Geography, and Africana Studies Faculty Research

Reverend Dr. James Hal Cone has unquestionably been a key architect in defining Black liberation theology. Trained in the Western theological tradition at Garrett Theological Seminary, Cone became an expert on the theology of Twentieth-century Swiss-German theologian Karl Barth. Cone’s study of Barth led to his 1965 doctoral dissertation, “The Doctrine of Man in the Theology of Karl Barth,” where he critically examined Barth’s Epistle to the Romans and Church Dogmatics. His contemporaries and more recent African American theologians and religious scholars have questioned the extent to which Karl Barth’s ideas shaped Cone’s Black theology. The purpose of this brief …

W. E. B. Du Bois’S “Conservation Of Races”: A Metaphilosophical Text, Kimberly Ann Harris Oct 2019

W. E. B. Du Bois’S “Conservation Of Races”: A Metaphilosophical Text, Kimberly Ann Harris

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Nothing was more important for W. E. B. Du Bois than to promote the upward mobility of African Americans. This essay revisits his “Conversation of Races” to demonstrate its general philosophical importance. Ultimately, Du Bois’s three motivations for giving the address reveal his view of the nature of philosophical inquiry: to critique earlier phenotypic conceptions of race, to show the essentiality of history, and to promote a reflexive practice. Commentators have been unduly invested in the hermeneutic readings and as a result have misunderstood its philosophical dimensions. Du Bois did more than introduce the concept of race into the purview …
