Between Resistance And Co-Operation; Contact Zones In The Aru Islands In The Voc Period, Hans Hägerdal Oct 2019

Between Resistance And Co-Operation; Contact Zones In The Aru Islands In The Voc Period, Hans Hägerdal

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The article is focused on early colonial interaction with the Aru Islands, geographically located in southern Maluku, at the easternmost end of the Indian Ocean world. The study examines how relationships were constructed in the course of the seventeenth century, how they were institutionalized and how this engendered forms of hybridity. Moreover, it discusses forms of resistance and avoidance in relation to the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Aru constitutes an interesting case as it is was one of the easternmost places in the world in which Islam and Christianity gained a (limited) foothold in the early-modern period, and it …

Lazaro Francisco: The Making Of A National Artist, Soledad S. Reyes

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

This essay situates the novels of Lazaro Francisco against the concrete specificities of our history as a nation, from the American colonial regime to the postwar period. The study shows how deeply Francisco understood the concept of nationhood even as he constructed experiences of socio-economic bondage and a disastrous war that resonated with his Liwayway readers.

A Quiet Valley At Roztoky: Testimony Of Singularity In The Landscape Imagery Of Zdenka Braunerová, Zdislava Ungrova Oct 2019

A Quiet Valley At Roztoky: Testimony Of Singularity In The Landscape Imagery Of Zdenka Braunerová, Zdislava Ungrova

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although Czech artist Zdenka Braunerova (1858-1934) has been recognized by scholars for her contributions to the Czech cultural scene, thorough visual analyses of her artworks are rare. By investigating a single landscape painting, A Quiet Valley at Roztoky, and placing it into the visual and contextual frame of its creation, this thesis thus approaches Braunerova’s artistic oeuvre in an uncommon way. I argue that if understood within its social, cultural and historical context, the painting transcends the purely optic qualities of a landscape genre and acquires instead the self-referencing character of a self-representation.

By subjecting the chosen painting to a …

Bilibid Weeks: An Account Of Prison Theater In The Philippines, Ricardo G. Abad, Nicolo Ricardo Magno

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

For three years, the training company RolePlayers, Inc., worked with young male inmates at the Special Classes for Children in Conflict with the Law (SC-CCIL), a unit of the New Bilibid Prison, in two theater productions that were shown to the prison community and the external public. The first production, staged in 2016, was a devised piece called Tumbang Preso (Knock down the Prisoner); the second production, mounted in 2018, was the Pyramus–Tisbe scene from William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in Filipino translation. The productions’ immediate impact, however, lies beyond the plays. For the young inmates, prison theater served …

Language Variations In Depok: A Study Of Linguistic Landscape And Dialectology, Sri Munawarah, Frans Asisi Datang

International Review of Humanities Studies

Written languages are present in various media in public landscapes, such as notice boards, banners, or bumper stickers. Studying these simple signs is the starting point in observing how a language variety exists and interacts with other languages. It is interesting to study how the instances of written texts found in public landscapes can be an indicator of what language variety is actually used by the inhabitants of Depok. Based on its history and its geography, a hypothesis states that many speakers of Betawi language and Sundanese reside in Depok. The study is aimed at demonstrating the written language varieties …

Tamalola; Transregional Connectivities, Islam, And Anti-Colonialism On An Indonesian Island, Hans Hägerdal, Emilie Wellfelt

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The present study focuses on a set of events in the Aru Islands, Maluku, in the late eighteenth century which are documented in some detail by Dutch records. A violent rebellion with Muslim and anti-European overtones baffled the Dutch colonialists (VOC) and led to a series of humiliations for the Company on Aru, before eventually being subdued. As one of the main catalysts of the conflict stands the chief Tamalola from the Muslim island Ujir. Interestingly, this person is also a central figure in local traditions from Ujir. Moreover, his story connects with wider cultural and economic networks in eastern …

Enabling The Transfer Of Skills And Knowledge Across Classroom And Work Contexts, Denise Jackson, Jenny Fleming, Anna Rowe

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Increasingly, contemporary work means graduates will operate in multiple workplace settings during their careers, catalysing the need for successful transfer of capabilities across diverse contexts. The transfer of skills and knowledge, however, is a complex area of learning theory which is often assumed and lacks empirical analysis. Facilitating transfer is critical for preparing students for effective transition to the workplace. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) provides an opportunity for tertiary education students to ‘practice’ transfer across classroom and work settings. Building on existing scholarship and using a mixed-methods design, this study aimed to explore the nature of transfer across these contexts …

Consequences Of Self-Interested Behavior: Pedagogical Questions And Dilemmas Relating To Cases Of A Closed Adoption And A Regional Landfill Proposal, J Forbes Farmer

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Abstract

The motive of self-interest is the driving factor behind many situations faced by those who have chosen the human services profession. In this article, the author provides two of his own fact-based human service cases (one involving case work and the psychological needs related to a closed adoption and one about community organization and advocacy related to a proposed regional landfill) that can be studied and debated in social work classes. The cases reflect the double identity of contemporary social work. The questions after each case require the students to reflect on and talk about the ramifications of self-interested …

Investigating The Effect Of Public Trust On Tax Compliance, Mohamad Thahir Haning, Hasniati Hamzah, Mashuri H. Tahili

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

Upright now, we rarely find any research that measures the effect of the slippery slope framework on taxpayers’ trust in paying their tax. This article seeks to investigate the effect of power and trust as exogenous variables based on the slippery slope frameworks theory while the endogenous one is a public trust of taxpayers. We employ a survey to investigate this matter and conduct quantitative analysis afterward. Respondents are employees at the Tax Service Authorities in three areas, they are, South Makassar, Maros, and Palopo, which are selected by using purposive sampling with a total population of 2,500 people. We …

Job Crafting And Individual Management Of Work-Family Balance Across Family Stages, Victor S. Mancini Oct 2019

Job Crafting And Individual Management Of Work-Family Balance Across Family Stages, Victor S. Mancini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Past research often viewed work-family balance as static and has rarely explored how perceptions may differ across stages of life. This study adopted a family life course developmental theoretical framework to test for mean differences in work-family balance across unique family stage groups. Results indicated that mean work-family balance varied across groups, but not according to the specific patterns that were predicted. In addition, this study proposed that job crafting was a cognitive-behavioral strategy that individuals can use to alter their own levels of work-family balance. Correlational, time-lagged, and change-to-change effects provide initial support for the relationship between job crafting …

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Preparing students for an ever-changing health care environment is a daunting task for nurse educators. The challenge remains how to create an online environment that engages students with real-life activities, such as authentic learning, which more closely resembles actual practice and reduces the gap between the educational and practice environments.
