Exploring Perceptions Of Personhood Of A Spouse In The Early Stage Of Dementia, Marina Vracevic Apr 2019

Exploring Perceptions Of Personhood Of A Spouse In The Early Stage Of Dementia, Marina Vracevic

Doctoral Dissertations

It is estimated that by the year 2050, one in three Americans 65 years and older will be living with some form of dementia, a group of symptoms that includes over 50 known types of diseases and conditions that currently affect over 6.7 million people in the United States. Because the psychological and physical decline associated with dementia impairs memory, judgment, communication, and other abilities that make independent daily functioning possible, it is important to care for the afflicted individuals in a way that takes care of their basic needs and preserves their sense of self, or their personhood. Many …

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

According to the American College Health Association (ACHA) (2017), in a survey of 31,463 students, 31.7% stated that stress negatively impacts their academic performance (lower grades, dropped course, etc.). Additionally, 45.1% of the students stated they have more than average stress levels. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to determine if mindfulness meditation was effective in helping college students cope with stress. Based on current evidence, Jon Kabat-Zinn’s online application for mindfulness meditation is supported as an effective way to help college students cope with stress (Regehr et al. 2013; Yusufov et al. 2018; Cavanagh et al. …

For The Culture: The Importance Of A Critical Social Theory Within The Music Education Classroom, Brianna Thomas Apr 2019

For The Culture: The Importance Of A Critical Social Theory Within The Music Education Classroom, Brianna Thomas

Senior Honors Theses

This paper will analyze the history of music education in the United States and discuss how the music classroom can contribute to and dismantle social inequalities including social class, gender, and race. Class effects music education by creating barriers to necessary resources and opportunities as a result of economic positions.[1] Gender is the second focus because music has historically been a male-dominated profession. As a result, many textbooks and curriculum highlight the achievements of men while erasing the contributions of women which has taught women to devalue their own work.[2] The last focus is race. While the arts …

Interprofessional Collaboration To Improve And Sustain Patient Experience Outcomes In An Ambulatory Setting, Natalie Sanchez, Kimberly Hermis

Patient Experience Journal

Patient experience is an important factor across diverse healthcare delivery settings. Despite enhanced attention to and advances in patient experience, many of the published initiatives focus on in-hospital care and opportunities have been identified to continue to strategically address patient experience in the ambulatory setting. This quality improvement initiative presents the development of an interprofessional approach to patient experience in a freestanding ambulatory oncology center. The objective of this initiative was to improve and sustain patient experience, as reflected in the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) scores via Press Ganey. This approach consisted of redesigning a previously …

From “Whores” To “Victims”: The Rise And Status Of Sex Trafficking Courts, Teresa C. Kulig, Leah C. Butler Apr 2019

From “Whores” To “Victims”: The Rise And Status Of Sex Trafficking Courts, Teresa C. Kulig, Leah C. Butler

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Views of people involved in the commercial sex trade have shifted. Once seen as prostitutes or “whores,” they are increasingly perceived as exploited “victims.” The behavior associated with commercial sex has been redefined from voluntary and disreputable to coerced and deserving of rescue. This new framework is part of a broader anti-trafficking movement in society to recognize and save vulnerable individuals who are exploited for sex. In this context, the model of problem-solving or specialty courts has been extended to sex trafficking cases. The goal first is to identify trafficking victims–also known as “victim-defendants”–and then to address their risk factors …

Religious Coping And Christ-Centered Recovery For Women With Substance Use Disorders, Mary Beth Bever Apr 2019

Religious Coping And Christ-Centered Recovery For Women With Substance Use Disorders, Mary Beth Bever

DNP Projects

Women have unique risk factors for the development of substance use disorder (SUD), barriers to SUD treatment, and risk factors for SUD relapse that require holistic care models and provide trauma-informed care approaches that address effective coping strategies. The use of religion and spirituality has been commonplace in many SUD programs to inspire the use of positive religious coping; however, negative religious coping may also be drawn on which poses a potential harm for women with SUD. The aim of this project was to assess for a correlation in positive and negative religious coping scores and program completion rates in …

Stress And Coping In Hospice Care, Elyse L. Collier Apr 2019

Stress And Coping In Hospice Care, Elyse L. Collier

DNP Projects

Accommodating current hospice care needs and anticipated industry expansion requires protection and optimization of human resources serving as frontline care providers. Coping responses employed by individuals serve as important determinants of their overall personal and occupational well-being. There is limited research focusing on the coping responses of hospice professionals, specifically, how they perceive and manage their own work stress and work-related quality of life. The purpose of this study was to examine how coping responses are related to work-related quality of life among individual professionals working together on outpatient interdisciplinary hospice care teams. A cross-sectional survey-based design was utilized to …

Self-Care And Burnout Among Nurses In A Hospital Setting, Hannah Stirnaman Apr 2019

Self-Care And Burnout Among Nurses In A Hospital Setting, Hannah Stirnaman

DNP Projects

Rates of burnout among healthcare professionals are well documented. The burnout of professional nurses is associated with a number of poor outcomes with costly consequences to both the healthcare system and public health. The American Nurses Association (ANA) has pushed for an initiative entitled Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation that encourages nurses to prioritize their health first and lists compelling statistics of nurse stress, mental health concerns, and workplace injuries. Burnout, a combination of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and decreased productivity, is one consequence of workplace stress and the demands placed on nurses; however, there is a lack of research on individualized …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This article considers the inclusion of mental health service users’ experiences and perspectives in professional education classrooms. After brief introductions to the authors’ backgrounds, the article discusses professional expertise and knowledge and the accreditation of professional education courses. It then goes on to explore service users’ understandings of mental and emotional distress and the development of Mad Studies, which, at first sight, may appear incompatible with professional education courses. Discussion then turns to the development and trial of a living experience learning resource, which portrays the first author’s knowledge and understanding of having voices. The article concludes by arguing for …

Social Work, Politics, And Social Policy Education: Applying A Multidimensional Framework Of Power, Amy Krings, Vincent Fusaro, Kerri L. Nicoll, Na Youn Lee Apr 2019

Social Work, Politics, And Social Policy Education: Applying A Multidimensional Framework Of Power, Amy Krings, Vincent Fusaro, Kerri L. Nicoll, Na Youn Lee

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

The call to promote social justice sets the social work profession in a political context. In an effort to enhance social workers’ preparedness to engage in political advocacy, this article calls on educators to integrate a broad theoretical understanding of power into social policy curricula. We suggest the use of a multidimensional conceptualization of power that emphasizes mechanisms of decision making, agenda control, and attitude formation. We then apply these mechanisms to demonstrate how two prominent features of contemporary politics—party polarization and racially biased attitudes—affect the ability of social workers to influence policy. Finally, we suggest content that social work …

Advocating For The Use Of Poetry And Mixed Media Work In Analytic Processes, Jason D. Dehart Apr 2019

Advocating For The Use Of Poetry And Mixed Media Work In Analytic Processes, Jason D. Dehart

The Qualitative Report

As part of my analytical process of looking at data collected from a pilot study on the use of film in the classroom, I discovered that I had the space to engage in a creative analysis process. In this article, I propose that creative methods be employed when analyzing data. An arts-based approach to research (Barone & Eisner, 1997) led to two creative products for my research: Poetry, which has been used with research in the past (Cahnmann, 2003; McCullis, 2013) and mixed media. This article explores relevant literature about integrating poetry and other arts into analysis and serves to …

Evaluating Educational Training Impact On Pre-Service Students’ Attitudes Towards Human-Animal Relationships, Yuleinys A. Castillo, Denise Silcox, Lynn K. Fisher Apr 2019

Evaluating Educational Training Impact On Pre-Service Students’ Attitudes Towards Human-Animal Relationships, Yuleinys A. Castillo, Denise Silcox, Lynn K. Fisher

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

Experts suggest that human-animal relationships can bring benefits to households, work environments, and training facilities. Animals can also have a positive impact on humans’ psychological well-being, interpersonal relationships, and interaction with human services providers. Even though human services providers need to understand clients’ holistic experiences, animals are often excluded from treatment and services. Therefore, human services students, who have exposure to the human animal bond, can be more effective providers and understand the role of animals in society. This study evaluated the impact of information about the human-animal bond on attitudes towards animals among pre-service human services students. In addition, …

Research has shown mental health issues are prevalent in community colleges; however, community colleges lack mental health services. This qualitative case study was designed to add information to the scholarly literature about the significant role community college instructors play in recognizing the mental health state of their students. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain an understanding of how instructors at a community college in Louisiana recognize their students’ mental health needs. Two research questions guided this study: What perceptions do community college instructors in Louisiana have of student mental health needs?

How can a community college …
